The third type, known as the genome-wide test, has proven more useful to the Freedmen. DNAPrint's AncestryByDNA looks across all 23 pairs of chromosomes for mutations that seem to indicate one ancestry or another. The company uses proprietary statistical software to estimate what percentage of a person's genetic material originated where - 85 percent European and 15 percent East Asian, say, or 60 percent African, 20 percent Native American, and 20 percent European. "Chief John Ross was between one-eighth and one-sixteenth Cherokee [12.5 and 6.25 percent]," Leslie Ross says, "and my DNA test said I'm 3 or 4 percent."
But even the best tests have large margins of error. "If you show a positive result of 4 or 5 or 6 percentage points, there's a possibility that it isn't indicating Native American ancestry," Frudakis says. People with these levels of Indian blood may simply have genetic roots in places like Greece or Turkey, whose natives can convey Indian-ness in their DNA. Pakistanis, meanwhile, typically show 30 percent Native American heritage, for reasons that are not yet totally clear to scientists.
The more tests that DNA companies conduct, the more data they'll have for comparison, which should lead to more accurate results. As the DNA databases grow, it may be possible to identify ancestry by region - say, a Southwestern Navajo or a New England Pequot. Kittles' database can already name the African tribes an African-American customer descends from. Still, linking Freedmen to particular tribes remains tricky because of all the intermarrying that has occurred over the years.
Even if the testing companies could narrow a person's origins to a specific tribe, would it matter? The science might be improving, but the Indian tribes show no inclination to accept it - or even consider it. "Our citizenship laws require you to have a Cherokee ancestor who was on the Dawes Roll. Can a DNA sample prove that?" says Cherokee spokesperson Mike Miller. "If I did a DNA test, it might show that I have some German DNA. That doesn't mean I could go back to Germany and say, I have German ancestry and I would like to be a German citizen."
It's a crude analogy. Germany's citizenship laws don't require applicants to prove that a relative was listed on a flawed census of people with purported Teutonic blood. And if Miller so desired, he could become a naturalized German citizen someday. The Freedmen have no such chance.
Other tribes are just as closed-minded. When I ask Jerry Haney, the Seminole chief who expelled the tribe's black members in 2000, whether he might reconsider his stance based on DNA tests, he huffs. "They can claim all the Indian they want," he says, "but they cannot become a member of the Seminole Nation by blood. They're down there [on the roll] as Freedmen. They're separate."

DNAPrint CEO Richard Gabriel's Interview With Wall Street Reporter Magazine Available Via Web Cast
Wednesday June 22, 8:42 am ET
SARASOTA, Fla., June 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- DNAPrint genomics, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: DNAP - News) today announced that President and Chief Executive Officer Richard Gabriel is the subject of an interview and web cast with the Wall Street Reporter magazine.
During the interview, which can be accessed free at http://www.wallstreetreporter.com , Mr. Gabriel discussed the future of pharmacogenomics and DNAPrint's recent licensing agreement with the Harvard Medical School's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDC) to clinically develop and commercially implement a new, super-potent form of erythropoietin (EPO), an anemia treatment drug.
"We believe that the recent FDA pronouncements about pharmacogenomics and the importance of understanding genetic ancestry of patients in combination with drug treatments is the wave of the future," Mr. Gabriel stated. "In fact, we see all drugs, or let's say a good majority of those drugs 10, 15, 20 years from now, and this is just my personal opinion, will have what we would call a diagnostic test tied directly to the administration of the drug so everyone knows that it is being personalized medically."
About DNAPrint genomics, Inc.
DNAPrint genomics, Inc. ( http://www.dnaprint.com ) is a developer of genomics-based products and services focused on drug development, pharmacogenomic diagnostic tests, forensics technology and consumer genetic tests. The Company's first theranostic product (drug/test combination) is PT- 401, a "Super EPO" (erythropoietin) dimer protein drug for treatment of anemia in renal dialysis patients (end stage renal disease). Currently in pre- clinical development, PT-401 will be targeted to patients with a genetic profile indicating their propensity to have the best clinical response.

Thanks Phil :)))))) I saw the news last night also ;) And trust me I have been long since day 1 I have been to two SHM and I had the pleasure of meeting alot of great folks on this board and at the SHM . I love Toni to death but I have a bad feeling about any 10-1 or 20-1 RS then add 1 BILLION more shares . :((((
I will see this thing till the end .I knew this stock was a big risk as any penny stock is .
Toni has forgot about us . I hope he enjoys his new MULTI MILLION dollar house on the beach .
As we say in the search and rescue biz " Till the bitter end "

Hold on to your Butts ???? Please no more good news !!! our SP cant take it ! I don't know why but any thing to do with forensics wont move our SP. Until we get a drug or ovanome ... oh well we shall wait and see . I feel some thing BIG better happen before the share holders meeting or you can stick a fork in us .

What i like the best ........We've been collecting samples all along, but we
just now are in the process of enrolling an additional 100 patients into
a trial at the Moffitt Center, and over the next six to nine months
we'll be finalizing the data. Our goal is to be able to go to the FDA
and show them how important genetic ancestry is. When we originally
looked at the data on a prospective basis of patient populations, we
couldn't make sense of it. That's part of the problem with gene data, no
matter what technology you are using. If you don't understand the
ancestry, or the genetic inheritance that goes along with that data,
it's very difficult puzzle to solve because hundreds and hundreds of
genes need to be analyzed. We're not claiming that we have the end-all-
and-be-all answer, but we certainly have what we think is a reasonable
tool for analyzing that very complex data
Almost 2 million shares and headed up :) Any one care to guess if well brake 50 million shares :P
good luck longs

WOW, just got in, just saw the news. Well aint THAT a kick...Observations:
1) After discussions on February 18, 2005 - last Friday. Means they could have released that any time this week but chose to release Friday after market close. Reason? Give people a chance to digest it, and do it at a time when they couldn't just indiscriminately dump their shares.
2) Latest PR is first evidence that Wall Street Group is on the job. About DNAPrint is changed to specifically bring Ovanome and Statinome to greater prominence.
3) DNAPrint now beyond the completion of the TBF Separation Agreement.
4) Since the deal was originally announced, a lot of water under the bridge. Deal with Orchid to distribute DNAWitness. The Vioxx, Bextra, etc. drug fiasco, and the FDA subsequently STILL hasn't released final guidance on the submission of pharmacogenomic data, including quidance on collection of race based data. Retinome test may be integrated with Australian forensics lab. DNAPrint taking the test in kit form directly to police agencies. DNAPrint/Senecio developing Ancestry Workstation - targets - Institutional, Govenment, and Academic researchers.
5) RCAP hasn't been on the Ask all week, maybe longer. It shows in the volume, with the exception of the 37 million share day. LJ done?
Speculation: Something coming out this weekend or before market opens Monday. If not, the share price will likely take a thumping, and if that's the case, they could have filed this 8-K ANY day this past week. It wouldn't have made a difference. Why wait?
Of course this is JMHO, and I'm as curious as anyone else to see what the Hello is going on.
Never boring around here, is it? LOL
Later,
W2P
(Voluntary Disclosure: Position- Long; LT Rating- Hold)
OK 3 geese are dead :P
I will give JMO so here goes . As we all know we have 2 places to go from here ! # 1 away... # 2 ... We hire a bunch more employees ,clean up the books ,get rid of a bunch of pirates ,Lajolla ,TBF , Go into a quiet period , Start having 30 + Million share days , Bring Ovanome and Statinome back in the news ,Connect the dots !!!

I just looked 2 min ago were still on there board ....for how long ??? God only knows .
Hummer
I feel were still VERY much in the mix with Bio... why would we still be on there supervisory board ? The time isnt right for the deal to go threw at this point . Our SP is to low and would kill us at this point . JMO any one else care to take a guess ? Im all ears .PS I wont be able to read any more post tonight .I plan on trying out some Blue goose :P and should slowly slip into a coma for the next 2 days !!! Hopfully Monday will bring us new news from our Co.

WASHINGTON - The government is setting up a special monitoring board to keep checking on medicines once they're on the market, responding to complaints that officials reacted too slowly to reports linking prescription painkillers to heart attack and stroke.
AP Photo
Yahoo! Health
Have questions about your health?
Find answers here.
Plans for the board were announced Tuesday on the eve of a congressional hearing on the safety of painkillers such as Vioxx and Celebrex, drugs that blossomed into a $5 billion-a-year business before risks from potential side effects came to light.
Meanwhile, a medical journal questioned whether continued use of such products was justified.
Vioxx was pulled from the market in September after a study showed an increase in heart attacks and strokes among people using it. Other studies have also raised questions of heart problems with the similar drugs Celebrex and Bextra.
"Because there are well-established options for treatment of all the approved indications for these drugs, it is reasonable to ask whether the use of the drugs can now be justified," Dr. Jeffrey M. Drazen, editor of the New England Journal of Medicine (news - web sites), wrote in an editorial published online.
That is the question facing the Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites)'s arthritis and drug safety and risk management advisory committees at their meeting beginning Wednesday.
The new drug safety board was announced by Health and Human Services (news - web sites) Secretary Mike Leavitt, who said it has become clear that people want more oversight and openness from the FDA (news - web sites).
"They want to know what we know, what we do with information and why we do it," Leavitt said, promising to create "a new culture of openness and enhanced independence."
The board will recommend what information and updates to put on the government's Drug Watch, resolve disputes over drug safety issues, and oversee the development of a drug safety policy. It will include FDA employees and medical experts from other government agencies and will consult with outside medical experts as well as consumer and patient groups.
Lester M. Crawford, the acting FDA commissioner who was nominated Monday by President Bush (news - web sites) to assume the post permanently, said the agency now "understands that the public expects better and more prompt information."
Drazen's editorial was accompanied by three studies of these drugs, known as Cox-2 inhibitors, being released early by the journal.
The reports add detail to indications of heart problems associated with the drugs.
The prescription drugs have become widely popular pain killers for people with chronic conditions such as arthritis because they avoid the stomach and intestinal problems that have been associated with many other pain killers.
"Unfortunately," Drazen said in his editorial, "as the evidence began to suggest unexpected toxicity of this group of agents, the same zeal that had driven the clinical investigators to show their gastrointestinal safety was not evidenced by studies designed to show their cardiovascular safety."
The unexpected findings raise questions about the integrity of the American drug-safety system, according to a second editorial in the journal by researchers Bruce M. Psaty of the University of Washington and Curt D. Furberg of Wake Forest University.
"Physicians are dismayed, pharmaceutical companies are embarrassed and financially threatened, and patients are injured," they wrote.
Dr. Mark Fendrick, an internal medicine specialist at the University of Michigan, said a decision on the drugs "should be considered one of competing risk and benefits."
"Until we know for sure about the cardiological safety of the Cox-2 inhibitors, I believe they should be limited to those individuals who have a risk of stomach injury and those who are at low risk for cardiac problems," Fendrick said.
People who have a heart risk or who take aspirin to protect the heart should consider a traditional pain killer, he said.
Many people who take the Cox-2 drugs to avoid stomach problems also take aspirin to protect the heart, he noted, and that cancels the gastrointestinal protection of the Cox-2 drugs.

WASHINGTON - Those annoying gray hairs that increasingly leer back from the bathroom mirror may have some value after all. Cancer researchers have developed a new explanation for graying hair that they hope will also shed light on the most dangerous type of skin cancer.
"Preventing the graying of hair is not our goal," said senior researcher Dr. David E. Fisher of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
"What we really want is to come up with treatments for melanoma," Fisher said in a telephone interview. Melanoma is the malignant form of melanocytes, the cells that help color hair and skin, and it is particularly resistant to chemotherapy and radiation.
Fisher's team found that hair goes gray when melanocytes become depleted.
The scalp contains a reservoir of adult stem cells that provide a continuous supply of these color-making cells, they found. But as the body ages these cells become depleted and sometimes begin to develop in the wrong part of the hair follicle.
The research, published online Thursday by the journal Science, originally focused on mice. But the team also studied human scalp tissue at various ages and found a similar pattern of cell depletion.
It was known that the pigment was not well transferred into gray hair, but the actual mechanism had not been understood, Emi K. Nishimura, a co-author of the paper, said in a telephone interview.
She said a gene called Bcl 2 is essential to maintain melanocytes. The researchers found that when they raised mice lacking this gene the animals went gray quickly and dramatically shortly after birth.
Fisher suggested that people who get gray prematurely may have a mutation of this gene.
The question they now want to answer is why the melanocyte cells begin dying off as the body ages.
These cells are generally good at surviving, being able to live through ultraviolet radiation — at the beach, for example — that would kill many other cells. That can be good when people go to the beach because the melanocytes produce pigment that protects the skin.
Unfortunately, they retain that ability to survive when they become cancerous, Fisher said.
So, he said, the researchers wondered if they could find a back door to killing the cells by studying how they die naturally, and that's what led to their research on graying.
By understanding how genes like Bcl 2 protect the cells, what pathways they act on, Fisher said, the scientists can look for ways to block that action with a drug.
"We have a number of ideas ... the work is moving," Fisher said. "I cannot say that we have drugs in our hands, but we have targets."
The American Cancer Society (news - web sites) expects about 55,100 people to be diagnosed this year with melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, with an estimated 7,910 deaths.
Melanoma can be cured when it is detected and treated early, but if the lesion penetrates deeply into the skin it is often fatal. Sun exposure is a major risk factor in the disease, which has been increasing in the past few decades.
The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health (news - web sites), the Charles A. King Trust of Fleet National Bank and The Medical Foundation.
