Man Threatens to Shoot iPhone at Genius Bar
A man who brought his malfunctioning iPhone to the Kenwood Towne Center (Ohio) retail store on Thursday displayed a holstered handgun to an employee to underscore his frustration, and was arrested by Cincinnati police for aggravated menacing. Donald Goodrich, 38, did have a concealed weapons permit that allowed him to legally carry the 9mm semi-auto pistol. However, police say when his displayed the gun, the Apple employee had a belief that, “the offender will cause serious physical harm,” a misdemeanor under Ohio law. According to police, Goodrich came into the store and was explaining his iPhone problem to an employee. He told the employee, “I’m so mad, I could pop a 9mm at it,” referring to the iPhone. Goodrich then followed up by saying, “I’ll do it right now! Look!” At that point, police say, Goodrich moved his shirt to reveal his handgun. The employee then took Goodrich over to a Genius to keep him occupied while a manager called police. Police arrested Goodrich without incident, and also charged him with failing to immediately tell arriving police that he was armed, a requirement of his concealed weapon permit.

Apple without Steve Jobs (Welcome to Macintosh)

Two people who are familiar with Mr. Jobs’s current medical treatment said he was not suffering from a recurrence of cancer, but a condition that was preventing his body from absorbing food. Doctors have also advised him to cut down on stress, which may be making the problem worse, these people said.

AAPL Apple CEO Jobs announces medical leave of absence until the end of June -Update-
Apple CEO Steve Jobs today sent the following email to all Apple employees:
Team, I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought. In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June. I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple's day to day operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan

Apple Will Own 40 Percent Of The Smartphone Market By 2013
Tuesday, January 13, 2009; 6:59 PM
Little-known research firm Generator Research, which also counts Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) as one of its customers, is predicting that in the next four years, Apple will surpass Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and as the largest smartphone company, and that it will own 40 percent of the global market. If you don't believe it, here's how they justify it: the report said Apple has "the resources, competencies and motivation to invest in the mobile sector just at the time when the economic climate is forcing many established players in the mobile industry to cut back on product development." Even more, it said Nokia's marketshare could fall from 40 percent today to 20 percent in that same period. Of course, Apple won't get there with one measly iPhone 3G. Generator predicts that in order to sell 77 million iPhone in 2013, Apple will have a range of different models to address different market segments. Plus, the App Store will be a critical component, similar to iTunes for the music player, which made the music industry rewrite the rules. In 2013, the App store will be "developed to the point where third party developers have access to network assets that will allow them to write programs that can send messages and establish voice calls between different iPhones." Release.
Even if these predictions are completely off the wall, it should make everyone think hard about what the wireless industry will be like should Apple dominates it. Wireless carriers and others should in particular question Apple's motives, and perhaps as a contingency plan, think about partnering more with Nokia as it rolls out its Internet services, so there's not just one dominate company going forward.
Jan. 1984: How critics reviewed the Mac
Anticipating the 25th anniversary of the Macintosh — unveiled by Apple (AAPL) in a Super Bowl ad on Jan. 24, 1984 — AAPLinvestors has assembled some choice quotes from the first wave of critical reviews.
Below, a sample from their collection, to which we’ve added a few of our own (from Owen W. Linzmayer’s Apple Confidential 2.0).
Our favorite: John Dvorak’s blistering critique of that newfangled pointing device called a “mouse.”
Byte, Gregg Williams, February 1984
The Macintosh brings us one step closer to the ideal of computer as appliance.
Creative Computing, John Anderson, July 1984
In its current form, the Macintosh is the distilled embodiment of a promise: the software can be intuitively easy to use, while remaining just as powerful as anything else around. It is now time to lay out the “bads”:
• The Macintosh does not have enough RAM.
• Single microfloppy is slow and inadequate.
• There are no internal expansion slots or external expansion buses.
• MacWrite has some severe limitations.
• The system is monochrome only.
• MS-DOS compatibility is ruled out.
• The Macintosh will not multitask.
• You can’t use a Mac away from a desk.
• MacPaint has an easel size limitation.
• Forget about external video.
• Macintosh software development is an involved process.
Bill Gates
Anybody who could write a good application on a 128K Mac deserves a medal.
InfoWorld, Thomas Neudecker, 26 March 1984
We think Apple has at least one thing right — the Macintosh is the one machine with the potential to challenge IBM’s hold on the market
The Seybold Report, Jonathan and Andrew Seybold
Apple also got some important things wrong. Our biggest worry is that Mac may be under-configured… But the dumbest thing Apple did with the whole development effort was to allow two different operating systems for Mac and Lisa.
San Francisco Examiner, John C. Dvorak, 19 Feb. 1984
The nature of the personal computer is simply not fully understood by companies like Apple (or anyone else for that matter). Apple makes the arrogant assumption of thinking that it knows what you want and need. It, unfortunately, leaves the “why” out of the equation — as in “why would I want this?” The Macintosh uses an experimental pointing device called a ‘mouse’. There is no evidence that people want to use these things. I dont want one of these new fangled devices.
David Bunnell, Macworld, from The Macintosh Reader
Borland founder Philippe Kahn was half right in January 1985 when he called the early Macintosh a “piece of s___.” It was underpowered, had very little software, no hard drive, no compelling applications like desktop publishing, and was marketed by a company that seemed to be near death. I can’t help but be amused by all the pumped-up bravado I hear and read about the people who created the Macintosh. To hold up the Macintosh experience as an example of how to create a great product, launch an industry, or spark a revolution is a cruel joke.
Looks like AAPL will drift with the market till earnings.
I expect that despite handily beating consensus the guidance will stink and it'll get whacked.

Apple's next-gen Mac mini to get dual display support
Friday, January 2, 2009
By Kasper Jade
Published: 08:50 AM EST
Bringing its least expensive system up to par with features in the rest of its lineup, Apple is due to revamp the Mac mini with multiple video outputs, AppleInsider has learned.
Those familiar with the company's plans say the small form factor desktop will have both the Mini DisplayPort connector first introduced on unibody MacBooks but also a Mini DVI connector.
The reason for the addition is unclear, though it would potentially give the budget Mac dual display support that it has lacked since it was introduced as a PowerPC G4 model in 2005. All other current Macs either already include a built-in display and only need one video output or else use full-size video cards, such as the discontinued Power Mac G5 or today's Mac Pro.
Such an update is helped in part by details that Apple itself has unintentionally confirmed through software leaks, which show the Mac mini using the GeForce 9400M chipset in a significantly new model that would, as a result, have the faster video performance and support for DisplayPort that are both missing in the current model's Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics.
It also indirectly supports notions of a more flexible design that in past leaks has suggested might include the option of replacing the optical drive with a second hard drive.
People aware of the update, however, contradict claims of a partly black plastic enclosure and say that none of the material seems visible on the design, suggesting it won't quite fit the black-and-silver color scheme of the iMac or other current Apple computers.
The new model is widely expected to bow at Macworld and may be accompanied by a new iMac at the same time.
