Apex Engineering International, L.L.C.: Not a Single Work Day Lost in 4 Years
- Jeff Landreth
http://www.osha.gov/dcsp/success_stories/sharp/ss_aei.html
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Apex Engineering International, L.L.C. (AEI) of Wichita, Kansas has manufactured aircraft components for commercial, regional and military markets of the aerospace industry for more than 50 years. Plant I produces detail aviation parts, while the assembly is accomplished at Plant II.
Several years ago, AEI acquired the assets of a failing company leading to many significant changes. It was learned that there had been three major accidents over the past three years that resulted in the loss of fingers and hands with the use of the newly acquired machinery. In the words of new President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Landreth, "Something was very wrong and had to change immediately." He also said, "I believed a world class company should care as much about its employees as it does about its profits."
Events soon began that would lead to a cultural transformation for AEI. A Director of Safety was hired. A Safety Board was formed with representatives from every employee group of the company and given the task of establishing safety policy. And then, AEI began to take a hard look at their safety record.
Apex Engineering International, L.L.C.
Many interesting and revealing facts and trends were discovered during the safety evaluation that proved to be extremely beneficial for AEI. It was learned that 42 percent of all accidents involved new employees within their first year of employment. Wednesdays were the worst day of the week for injuries. The worst month of the year for injuries was July. A major injury such as the loss of an eye, hand or finger was occurring every 18 months. Most injuries involved material handling. Workers compensation costs were soaring. It was also revealed that the company lacked both a training plan and a daily equipment safety check list/procedure. This detailed review provided AEI with information they used to identify and focus on safety problem areas.
With the help of the free, confidential Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) on-site consultation services provided by the Kansas Department of Labor, AEI began to tackle their safety problems. Larry Landreth, Director of Safety, wrote "Under the leadership of the OSHA consultation program, we began to see immediate results and a new perception was established for our company."
Many changes were instituted. A safety orientation program was developed and a safety handbook was created. A buddy program was implemented to pair every new employee with a seasoned employee for 20 days; the seasoned employee ensures the new employee learns and performs all job tasks safely.
After making many safety improvements, the Safety Board voted to compete for the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) Award. In February 2008, AEI received the highest safety designation bestowed on small businesses by OSHA for exceptional commitment and dedication to effective safety and occupational health management systems. During the SHARP Award presentation, Judy Freeman, Area Director, OSHA-Wichita Area Office said, "Getting to be a SHARP site is no small undertaking. SHARP criteria are stringent. Apex Engineering International, L.L.C. has undergone a rigorous review process by the State of Kansas consultants."
There have been many other rewards for AEI. In 2006, when the Total Recordable Case (TRC) industry average rate was 6.3, AEI’s rate was 4.7. As of January 2009, there has not been a single work day lost during the past 4 years despite a significant increase in the number of employees. Jeff Landreth reported, "Our workman’s compensation insurance rates have dropped dramatically saving the company money, the employees can come to work in the morning knowing that they will make it home to their families at night without getting hurt. Productivity is higher because we have no lost work days due to injuries. Most of all though, I sleep better at night knowing that I didn’t contribute to the injury of one of our most valuable assets—our employees."
In any manufacturing business, there are many dangerous machines and a lot of opportunities for injuries. The employees of AEI have noticed the difference the commitment to safety has made for their company. One employee referred to the safe working environment at AEI as "the backbone of success." Another said, "It is nice to go to work at a place that has my best interest at heart." A third employee said, "I find myself teaching my family safety practices that I have learned at work."

Mineseeker Appoints New Global Strategic Team
July 12th, 2010
July 12, 2010
Mineseeker Operations has appointed two new key members within its strategic management team.
Chief Executive Edward Cross and Commercial Director Mark Dorey will be at the forefront of Mineseeker Operations’ global business development.
“We are planning definitive demonstrations of the unique Mineseeker landmine detection technology, which will save thousands of lives and return war-torn land to much-needed agricultural use,” said Mineseeker Operations Executive Chairman Mike Kendrick.
“Mineseeker will meet humanitarian needs across the world and to this end we are delighted to have made such significant appointments – it is these people who will ensure we offer our customers the very best landmine detection programmes available.”
“I am delighted that Edward has joined us as Chief Executive Officer, as he brings a superb combination of commercial and operational expertise,” said Mike Kendrick.
“Not only has he secured numerous multi-million pound contracts for previous companies, but he has also deployed and managed complex operations in remote, extreme and post-conflict environments in Europe, India, the Middle and Far East and many African countries.”
Edward Cross, who lives in Pershore, Worcestershire, trained as a British Army officer at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He was commissioned into the Staffordshire Regiment and was posted on operational tour, during which he led counter-insurgency operations in hostile environments.
On leaving the army, Edward pursued a successful sales and business development career in the IT industry, before joining a leading commercial mine clearance and oil services company as head of business development.
He then took a new mine clearance company to market and within six months the company had secured its first contract, with seismic survey company Western Geco, followed by a multi-million pound contract with the United Nations. During the time Edward was in charge, the company doubled revenue year on year for four successive years.
Mark Dorey, from Market Drayton, Shropshire, graduated from the London School of Economics with a BSc in Economics and Finance and subsequently trained as a Chartered Accountant with Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers).
He worked as Group Financial Controller for a listed marketing services group, before moving to PepsiCo as an international accountant working in both Spain and Turkey.
Mark joined the Virgin Group where he worked with Mike Kendrick for almost 10 years, holding a number of directorships within Virgin’s aerial advertising and marketing services division and acting as Chief Operating Officer of The Lightship Group, managing the largest fleet of commercial airships ever operated.
During his time at Virgin, Mark negotiated a number of multi-million dollar, international contracts with blue chip clients such as Goodyear, Sanyo and Blockbuster Entertainment as well as setting up businesses in Singapore and Brazil. He was also a founding director of Mineseeker and involved in negotiating the original agreements with DERA (now QinetiQ).
“Mark has extensive international business experience and an ability to deliver commercial solutions in complex environments,” commented Mike Kendrick. “I am delighted to be working with him again.”
Mineseeker Operations plans to use a unique ground-penetrating radar system that can detect landmines from an aerial platform – a small plane or helicopter – combined with a GPS and video mosaic system that will accurately map minefields and produce detailed photographic images of affected areas.

Mineseeker Announces ‘Total Picture’ Technology
July 12th, 2010
July 12, 2010
Mineseeker Operations has announced detailed information about the ground-breaking technology it is to implement shortly in a concerted effort to rid war-torn areas globally of landmines.
The existing Mineseeker GPSAR compact portable sensor can record data from more than 500 acres per hour, utilising a carrier-phase differential GPS (global position system) for precise geo-positioning. The radar, developed by a USA supplier and extensively tested, has been enhanced by the addition of new Multi Spectral Imaging (MSI) technology developed by a UK company. This highly sophisticated visual thermal, infra-red and geo-referenced imaging system will be fused with the radar imagery to provide a complete picture of ground surveyed from the air.
The Multi Spectral Imaging (MSI) Process
Mineseeker will utilise helicopters and light aircraft to operate the systems in the field.
Edward Cross, CEO of Mineseeker Operations said “The GPSAR will show surface and sub-surface indications, with a ground breaking geo-referenced visual mosaic layer giving a detailed view of the area and the thermal image and infra-red layers will provide crucial additional information, allowing end users to have access to the maximum amount of essential information.’’
“The combination of such advanced and accurate systems will, for the first time, provide a total picture of landmine sites and enable highly effective mapping which will, in turn, support rapid mine clearance efforts.’’
“Mineseeker’s approach heralds a new era in landmine clearance, one in which areas riddled with mines and other unexploded ordnance will be subject to complete scrutiny and subsequently cleared for release to agricultural purposes.’’
“For the people living in countries affected by the landmine scourge, this is life-changing.”
Mineseeker Operations is planning to demonstrate the combined GPSAR and Multi Spectral Imaging system in Croatia.

latest miniaturized system can be carried on light aircraft (fixed wing or helicopters) and has been certified on several aircraft including the Robinson helicopter.
The new technology has been trialled successfully using an airborne radar solution with the potential to map minefields from the air, safely, efficiently, at much faster speed, and significantly lower cost. The Mineseeker Foundation has agreed to license the concept, together with the Mineseeker ‘brand name’, to Mineseeker Operations.??Using Ground Penetrating Synthetic Aperture Radar (GPSAR) mounted in suitable aircraft with software specifically developed to interpret the radar outputs, land can be scanned from the air and mapped precisely.??Field trials with radar mounted under an airship in Kosovo and Pershore have proven that the solution is feasible. Airships are, however, both expensive to buy, equip and run and vulnerable in semi-hostile areas. The latest miniaturized system can be carried on light aircraft (fixed wing or helicopters) and has been certified on several aircraft including the Robinson helicopter.

KAT Exploration, Inc. Distributes 1 to 4 OTCBB Shares of BVIG.OB and Provides Update on Handcamp Drill Project for NI 43-101 Pre
MOUNT PEARL, NL -- (Marketwire)
06/08/10
KAT Exploration, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: KATX) www.katexploration.com
KAT Exploration, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: KATX) will distribute to its shareholders restricted shares of Bella Viaggio, Inc. (OTCBB: BVIG) which trades on the Over the Counter Bulletin Board (OTCBB). BVIG.OB was purchased for $305,000 in cash paid in full. KAT Exploration shareholders will receive 1 restricted share of (OTCBB: BVIG) for every 4 shares of (PINKSHEETS: KATX) owned up through the record date to be decided by its board of directors to be executed as early as possible. KAT Exploration shareholders will be unaffected while having restricted shares of BVIG.OB distributed as additional equity.
KAT Exploration has retained a Securities Law Firm that has facilitated and completed the administrative process to submit to FINRA for a name, ticker, and CUSIP number change for (OTCBB: BVIG).
KAT Exploration has retained an Auditing Firm that has completed the required audit of the Handcamp property that was placed into (OTCBB: BVIG). KAT Exploration will manage and oversee the operations of the (OTCBB: BVIG) Handcamp drilling program. KAT Exploration believes that because of the expected valuation that will come from its Handcamp and other high grade gold properties recently discovered that it would be better suited to position the properties within a higher market standard existing within a fully reporting OTCBB entity.
The new name for Bella Viaggio, Inc. will be "KAT Gold Holdings Corporation" that will be the parent company for all future OTCBB share distributions. The goal is to later merge (PINKSHEETS: KATX) into an OTCBB entity under KAT Gold Holdings Corporation as a wholly owned subsidiary on a 1 for 1 ratio basis. KAT Exploration will maintain all its high grade copper properties and is aggressively preparing to take its copper exploration and drilling programs to the next major stages of development to be announced soon. Ken Stead, KAT Exploration, Inc. President and CEO, said, "This OTCBB share distribution is the first of more OTCBB share distributions that we are planning to distribute to our shareholders. We look forward to transitioning our shareholders out of the pink sheets market and on to the more transparent OTCBB market for now."
KAT Exploration has received approval of its drill permit from the Newfoundland Department of Mines and Energy to move forward towards the drill project on its Handcamp gold property. As previously announced, the drill contract has been awarded to Cabo Drilling for a minimum of 15 holes and a minimum of 1200 meters. There are approximately 20 km's of Induced Polarization (IP) that is nearly completed over various sections of the grid to assist in locating drill targets.
KAT Exploration recently announced that it had discoveries up to 5840 PPB of gold in soil samples and 31.4 g/t Au in the outcrop at the Handcamp gold property from the results of 1457 soil samples received from Actlabs in Ontario, Canada for Gold and base metal analysis.
Geologist, Mr. R. James Weick, has been engaged to oversee the drilling project and complete a NI 43-101 for the Handcamp property. Mr. Weick's qualifications can be viewed by clicking the link below.

We realize that many are anxiously waiting the actual drilling to begin. However, it is very important that initiating such a program that advanced ground work and data be in place. Our field crew has been in place for the past few weeks gathering all the necessary information and geophysics data to move the project to the actual drilling stage. We expect the actual drilling to shortly commence as the company will release an update to inform its shareholders. We appreciate your patience and encourage you to monitor our website for further updates.

“The Spirit of Diana.”
(Founder & CEO of Mineseeker Mike Kendrick is seeking permission from Princes William and Harry to name the first helicopter after their late mother.)
Mineseeker will be using its new, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system next month in minefields outside Sibenik. Mounted for the first time in a helicopter, Mineseeker expects the radar, which will be supplied under license from the U.S. military, to be able to “see” buried landmines. If successful, Mineseeker will be a genuinely radical, 21st century development in the anti-landmine campaign that Diana championed with such passion.
Mineseeker hopes that with additional, innovative software it might eventually be able to identify mines from outer space via the helicopter’s GPR—think of your Sat Nav and imagine buried landmines rather than street maps on your screen. In April, Mineseeker presented its proposal to the most informed and critical audience on earth at the annual humanitarian de-mining conference organized by the Croatian Mine Action Center in Sibenik. While some in the international de-mining establishment remained skeptical and lacked immediate enthusiasm, Mineseeker promised to report to next year’s conference the results of trials to be held in Croatia, Cyprus, and Mozambique. Mineseeker’s founder & CEO, Mike Kendrick, stressed the importance of establishing the GPR’s efficacy in rocky and wooded terrain, deserts and jungles, as mines are laid indiscriminately around the world.
The United Nations currently estimates that it will take 100 years to de-mine the world of 100 million landmines. Existing methodology can involve plough-like, armor-plated machines, handheld metal detectors and sniffer dogs. However, de-miners crawling on their bellies to identify, excavate, and destroy mines remain the default modus operandi. De-mining is gradually embracing high technology, and thus Mineseeker’s potential contribution is a de-mining game-changer.
The first—and often biggest—challenge facing de-miners is always to determine precisely where landmines have been laid. Area reduction is a crucial operational concept—potentially liberating vast tracts of land for use after the mined area has been identified.
In some places, such as Mozambique where floods have randomly re-distributed mines which were first laid randomly during its civil war in the 1970s and 1980s, the task of identification can become difficult or impossible. Graca Machel, the widow of Mozambique’s President Samora Machel and wife of Nelson Mandela, has been a patron of Mineseeker for a decade. In other cases, such as the Serb invasion of Kosovo, its army kept detailed maps that recorded where their mines had been laid, although U.N. de-miners could not rely solely on the records of Milosevic’s defeated army.
Mineseeker first tested its GPR, under license from the British Ministry of Defence, in Kosovo under U.N. auspices in 2000. At that time the radar was carried in a Virgin airship. Then Mineseeker was probably best known for its celebrity patrons—in addition to the Mandelas, Queen Noor of Jordan and Brad Pitt joined Sir Richard Branson who funded the airship trials.
Despite the technical success of the GPR in Kosovo, the Mineseeker Foundation subsequently struggled for funding, but this month Mineseeker Operations (the for-profits wing of the charitable Mineseeker Foundation) gained its first corporate sponsor, the U.S. aerospace company Quasar Aerospace. Its CEO, Dean Bradley, a U.S. veteran of Korea, signed a $10 million deal with Mineseeker that will fund the GPR helicopter trials. Bradley also donated $1.3 million personally to the Mineseeker Foundation to help landmine victims.
A significant element of Diana’s real legacy is the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty, signed in December 1997, three months after she died. Governments throughout the world acknowledged Diana’s posthumous role in Ottawa. This landmine ban came into force in 1999, and more than 150 states have now ratified or acceded to the Ottawa Treaty. However, significant countries, such as the United States, India, China and Russia, have not.
The iconic images of Diana comforting limbless child mine victims in Angola in 1997 resonated with the public and the world’s politicians. This single visit during which the appropriately protected princess walked through a minefield while visiting Kuito—reported then to have been the world’s most heavily mined town—instantly made her the international poster child of the anti-landmine campaign.
Perhaps Diana wouldn’t have been surprised that champagne “socialists” such as millionaire Mansfield and the billionaire charlatan, Fayed, seek to traduce her legacy by fantasizing about her death at the hands of “landmine dealers.” For me, the spirit of Diana will live in the Mineseeker trials in Croatia this summer.

AEROSPACE BOSS PLEDGES $1.4M TO HELP LANDMINE VICTIMS
17 March 2010 - The CEO of US-based Quasar Aerospace Industries Inc, Dean Bradley, has pledged a $1.4m financial package to the UK-based Mineseeker Foundation in a bid to provide ongoing practical support to the victims of landmine blasts worldwide – and will be the foundation’s first corporate patron.
The Mineseeker Foundation was founded by Mike Kendrick in 2001, when the former CEO of Virgin Airship and Balloon Company devised a means of detecting landmines using sophisticated radar detection carried by airships.
Nine years on, the foundation continues to seek ways of aiding landmine victims whilst working simultaneously on landmine detection and eradication thanks to its sister company Mineseeker Operations UK Ltd. It plans to use a unique ground penetrating radar system that can detect landmines from an aerial platform – now a small plane or helicopter, rather than an airship – and accurately map minefields, detailing affected areas.
“The scale of the landmine problem is vast – people are maimed and killed on a daily basis, thousands upon thousands of acres of land that could be used for agriculture are blighted,†says Mike Kendrick, founder of the foundation and executive chairman of Mineseeker Operations UK Ltd.
“Current efforts to find and destroy landmines are laborious and time-consuming whilst precious time is wasted, technology utilised by Mineseeker Operations will vastly reduce both time spent and cost involved.
“Whilst all this is going on, people are suffering each and every day and this is where the Mineseeker Foundation comes in – and thanks to the very generous donation from Dean Bradley of Quasar Aerospace we will be able to set up clinics to provide prosthetic limbs to landmine victims in war-torn areas.â€
Dean Bradley has first-hand experience of conflict on the ground, having served with the US Army in Korea.
“There is a massive and urgent need to tackle the landmine problem – this is a huge humanitarian issue which has to be dealt with now,†said Dean Bradley. “I am terribly optimistic about what the Mineseeker Foundation can achieve on behalf of landmine victims, and also firmly believe that Mineseeker Operations will succeed on a global level."
Note. The Mineseeker Foundation is a not for profit organisation. It has licensed the know-how and technology to Mineseeker Operations, a for profit concern, established to attract investment to fund the deployment of the Mineseeker systems. Quasar has taken an option to fund Mineseeker Operations in a multi-million dollar programme.
