Earliest human case of bird flu disclosed
By MARILYNN MARCHIONE, AP Medical Writer Wed Jun 21, 7:21 PM ET
Beijing scientists said in a medical journal Wednesday that a man in mainland China died of bird flu in November 2003 — two years before the communist country reported any human infections to the World Health Organization.
At the last minute, however, the scientists asked without explanation to withdraw the journal report. But it was already in print.
The man's death was initially thought to have been caused by SARS, the scientists wrote. That raises the possibility that other cases attributed to SARS may have actually been the deadly H5N1 flu.
"It's hard to believe that this is the only person in all of China who developed H5N1" that year, said Dr. John Treanor, a flu expert at the University of Rochester.
WHO was surprised by the report, which came not from the Chinese government but from eight scientists in a research letter in the New England Journal of Medicine.
"We will formally request the Ministry of Health to clarify this," and why it has taken more than two years to come to light, said Roy Wadia, a WHO spokesman in China.
At least one scientist e-mailed the journal Wednesday morning, asking that the report be withdrawn. With the article already in print, journal editors were waiting to see whether the authors would now retract the paper.
"We can't speculate" what the problem was, said journal spokeswoman Karen Pedersen.
The Beijing case does not necessarily mean the world faces any greater danger of a pandemic; bird flu does not spread easily from person to person, and nearly all human cases have involved close contact with infected poultry.
But the report raises questions about the ability and willingness of scientists in China to study the disease. During the SARS outbreak, some public health experts questioned whether the Chinese were being candid about the extent of the crisis.
Dr. Lindsey Baden, a New England Journal editor, said he does not know what caused the delay in reporting the Beijing bird flu case but suspects it took time for scientists to realize they had a novel H5N1 strain and to do the genetic sequencing needed to analyze it.
"It's to be praised that they are doing this kind of work and sharing it," Baden said.
Efforts to reach the Chinese scientists for comment were unsuccessful. They are from the Beijing Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology, the 309th Hospital of the People's Liberation Army, the Beijing Genomics Institute and were led by Dr. Wu-Chun Cao at State Key Laboratory of Pathogens and Biosecurity.
Yoshihiro Kawaoka, a virologist from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Tokyo, said the Chinese may now be taking a look at other SARS cases to see whether they were bird flu.
It was not until 2005 that China reported its first human cases of bird flu. Eight infections and five deaths were recorded that year. So far this year, China has reported at least 10 infections and seven deaths.
The SARS outbreak began in China in November 2002 but was not recognized until the following spring. More than 1,450 cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome were confirmed, the vast majority in Asia. However, some were diagnosed not by lab tests but based on symptoms, which are very similar to those of bird flu.
The New England Journal report raises the possibility that the two dangerous viruses emerged simultaneously.
The patient, a 24-year-old man with pneumonia and respiratory distress, died four days after he was hospitalized in 2003, they reported. The main outbreak of SARS, occurred earlier that year and sporadic cases were still happening. Doctors initially diagnosed that as his cause of death. But tests failed to find the SARS virus.
Further tests of the man's lung tissue yielded fragments of a flu virus, the Chinese scientists reported. Genetic sequencing revealed it to be a mixed virus, with genes similar to two distinct types of bird flu seen in northern and southern China.
"It suggests to me that H5N1 infections were occurring in China probably not recognized or not detected maybe in the background of the SARS epidemic," Treanor said. "I don't know how you could interpret it any other way."
Bird flu crossed the species barrier to infect humans on at least three occasions in recent years: in Hong Kong in 1997 (18 cases with six deaths), in Hong Kong in 2003 (two cases with one death) and in a series of cases that began in December 2003 and was recognized in January 2004, WHO reports. In the last series, 225 cases and 128 deaths have been reported from 10 countries.
The two 2003 Hong Kong cases were strongly suspected to have resulted from a family's travel to mainland China, but this was never proved and there were no known poultry outbreaks of the disease at the time being reported in China.
The newly disclosed case in Beijing means "there may be more jumps from birds to people than we realized," said Baden of the medical journal.
I expect good news at the conference call after the market close. Any thoughts as to where this stock is headed? Could it reach or surpass the 52 week high of $0.131?
To me the idea of an R/S to get on the Amex, followed by a 2/1 gift seems like a cheap trick to reduce the number of shares.
You are correct. The company has no business giving non-public information to this newsletter. I assumed this information was public.
I would not expect an adverse effect on price if the R/S were to bring PLNI to the Amex. As a shareholder, would you be opposed to a R/S if it would bring Plasticon to the Amex?
I would not expect you or any other investor to base your analysis of Plasticon on the information I provided. Good luck with your investments.
The name of the publication is The "Grip". It costs $2,500.00 per year(I think they are running a special now for $1,500.00).They usually recommend holding a stock for 2-3 years before taking profits. They do not receive any shares for their recommendations. The news letter is always followed by this disclaimer.
"Agora Financial, LLC expressly forbids its writers from having a financial interest in any security recommended to its readers. And all Agora employees and agents must wait 24 hours after an Internet publication prior to following an initial recommendation, and 72 hours after publication is mailed."

Some more DD on Plasticon.
The following is from a newsletter I get that recommended PLNI. The information is from an interview with Mr. Turek and company consultant William Howe about a week ago.
Expect rapid top and bottom growth in 2006, it will be a "breakout year for the firm".
A final draft of financials for 2003 and 2004 should be filed in the next 2 -3 weeks followed by audited financials for 2005.
On the share buyback. Investors can turn in half their shares with the guarantee to receive twice that amount after a twelve month period(Rule 144 applies). They are looking to decrease the O/S by 25 -30%
The company might consider a reverse split, but only if the AMEX required it. The company is in advanced discussions with the AMEX,
Plasticon is currently profitable and has no operating debt. The Pro Mold acquisition brings manufacturing in-house, and the company estimates the acquisition will pay for itself in the first six months.
Worldwide PC market expected to double by 2010.

EZ2 - Please consider adding SNVBF and ASPC to your China watch list.
SNVBF, a Chinese Biotech Co. is working on SARS and Hepatitis A vaccines. I bought in at just under $2.00 at the begining of the year. It reached a high of just over $6.00 and is currently selling at $3.30. The news letter that I get that recommended it believes it will be in the "teens" next year. They recently announced an application for the AMEX.
ASPC plans on setting up digital theaters in China. They have a contract with the CFG (China Film Group). Funding is expected within the next six weeks. I sold all my HRCT to make a big bet on this one. When they get their funding, this could easily go up 10X - 20x. To be on the safe side, wait for news or a big spike in volume/share price before jumping in.
Hello HRCT'ers,
I would like to be considered to be part of the list. I would not be so presumptuous, however, to add myself to the list. Please take the following into consideration.
1. Please read post #32659
2. While I have lost a great deal of money investing in Hartcourt I have never blamed Hartcourt or Dr. Phan only my poor timing.
3. While I read this board almost every day I do not post very much.
4. I no longer hold shares of HRCT. After loosing so much money,
when the share price started dropping this year, I could not afford to make the same mistake that I made back in 2001-2002. I held shares from the spring of 99' to the spring of 2004'.
If someone decides to add me to the list I say thank you. If not thats OK. Good luck to all the longs and in particular, a long and happy life to Dr. Phan!
OT: Hello TFN - You have PM
Year end predication of $1.55.
The OTC board has very little to do with the pps movement. It has to do with top and BOTTOM line growth. Exceed expectations and the price goes up. Exceed quarter over quarter and the pps can go through the roof.
If you don't make your numbers on the NASDAC you can get pounded just as bad. Just look at what happened to NTES recently. On the NASDAC your dealing with professional traders that can eat your lunch.
Also, using NTES as an example. The day the pps fell it was in a run up for the entire day until the bottom fell out in after hour trading. Their numbers seemed to be a surprise to all. Not until HRCT can keep the numbers a secret and not have what appears to be a select few having an inside track, do we deserve to be on a major exchange.
Thanks FREE_NEBULA for the education.
What is the p/e for HRCT vs. the big China plays (NTES SINA SOHU) and how important is that number vs. the PSR?
When are the Oct. Q&A answers expected?
JMAP - Please don't answer they come out when they come out.
Worse - Typical HRCT! The price runs up before the numbers and then a few insiders sell in anticipation of a falling stock price.
JAMAP - I was just asking for a guess.
Almost every day I see posts on how this stock will perform. Several months ago this board held a contest as to where they thought the share price will end up at the end of the year. I was just trying to find out where some of the longs think we will wind up.
The truth of course. I have been just as concerned as you have been and have many of the same issues.
At this rate, where are we by the end of the year?
So where do we close tomorrow?
Re: ETLK restricted shares.
As I mentioned in my message #89205 I spoke with Schwab on Fri. and they said that the ETLK shares were delivered to them as a jumbo certificate. I requested that my shares be broken out. They started that process on Fri. and said it would take 3-5 weeks to complete. They also said that our restricted shares were NOT THE SAME AS THOSE BEING TRADED ON THE OTC AS ETLK! They suggested that I contact ETLK directly. If anyone has any more information on this please let us know.
ETLK restricted shares.
On Fri. afternoon I called my broker, Charles Schwab, and asked what I needed to do if I wanted to sell my shares of ETLK. In addition to filling out form 144 they said that the shares were sent to Schwab as a block and would have to go back to the transfer agent to be broken up,(apparently no one had asked for their individual shares before my call) a process that would take 3 - 5 weeks after which they would provide instructions for filing form 144. Schwab's restricted shares department also said that these shares were not the same as those being traded as ETLK on the OTC and suggested I call ETLK. Does anyone know if this is true and if so what does it mean?
Hello operator - Never said that Hartcourt had no net profit.
I believe net profit is not that important right now. I think the subs will be bought for market share and the company that buys them will apply their own set of programs to increase profitability.
Hello Boston_Dude - So I will take 1X or $5.00 pps.
Forget about credibility issues, the acquiring company would get instant access to the fastest growing market in the world with projected annual sales growth of 18 - 22%.
I don't believe 2X is that unrealistic. I was part of a business that was sold for about 1.5X sales. The business was mature and are gross margins were about 2%. Our manufacturing unit was shut down two years later. Seems we were bought for market share alone.
Jonas, I agree. Not only is gross revenues the most important metric it is the only important measurment.
For the past several months Hartcourt has stated in several news releases and in the Q&A from this board their desire to improve corporate governance. We have also heard on several occasions that that 2004 was going to be the big year. The only scenario that fits the bill is a buyout.
Hartcourt is a holding company. They have neither the experience or resources to apply all the methodolgy necessary to increase profit margins.
Lets assume that by this time next year we have achieved all the purchases and at that time we have 200MM O/S and projested combined sales of $1.0B. Lets also assume that that the buyer is willing to pay 2 X sales. That brings pps to $10.00. Not bad for a company whoes pps a year earlier was $0.05.
Hello myownman2,
As to touting ASPC. I plead guilty.
As to possibly materially benefiting from a larger shareholder base. I plead guilty.
As to members of this board possibly materially benefiting by investing in ASPC. I plead guilty!
Tennis - after clicking on the first link back space the "(SEC" out and enter again. This will get you to the correct SEC filing info .
I believe we are in for a 3X - 5X increase over the next 3 to six weeks. Remember when it jumped to $0.17 just on a business plan? I am expecting some real news from the way the stock is behaving. As you know things jump quickly. Maybe as early as Monday. If you liked DMNX.OB(shame on you a porn stock)you will love ASPC.OB. Also check out CWLC.OB which has started a run up.

Sorry for the triple post I pushed the button too many times
OT: Hello Tennis - A few weeks ago I posted about another China play, ASPC that you were once interested in. Did you get a chance to check it out? Since than the share price has about doubled and still no news. Rumor has it that news is imminent. Based on past experience, any news will push this stock into the mid-teens. My guess, really good news could push it to $0.25 - 0.50.
Have a great time at the shareholder's meeting. Maybe next year I can make it and meet many of the longs.

Hello fellow HRCT investors,
I am just one of many I have seen this year coming out of the wood work. I first started investing in HRCT back in 1999 and remember a few days in Nov. making $100K per day. My belief in HRCT and Dr. Phan (I met him at the Fl. meeting a few years ago)was so great that I never sold a share. In fact, after being forced into early retirement in 2001, I used a significant portion of my severance package to purchase additional shares. I only regret not waiting another year for those purchases because many were in the the $1.00 - 2.00 range. My break even point is about $0.90 and I am the proud owner of nearly 100K shares. In many respects I am glad I did not sell because I only would have invested in the likes of EMC, JDSU etc... with no hope for full recovery. AS it is I went completely bust in about a half a dozen DOT bombs.
By last summer I was so fed up with my investments that, in order to maintain my health I just turned off the computer. Too bad I did not purchase more HRCT at the bottom. I believe now the HRCT will cover every loss that I have had in these past past several years as well as provide a nice profit and that
time is less than one year away.
The main purpose of this post however is to get the opinion of the members of this board, that I respect greatly for their professionalism, knowledge of China and investing skills, about another China play investment that I recently made. This also may represent a ground floor investment for fellow board members.
About two years ago I first learned of this stock, TEIM from this board from TENNISSTUD. The stock symbol changed last year to ASPC.OB(Alpha Spacecom). I believe TENNIS also made an investment and started an I-Hub board. The stated purpose of this company is to put a Ka band satellite over China to provide broadband and pay-per-view T.V. The project has been on hold for the past years. To conserve funds they went so far as to shut down their website and like HRCT move their operations to China. They have held costs to about 100K per Quarter. All this is about to change. Please read the SEC 10SQB dated 6/18/03. Please read my post on Raging Bull(ASPC) under Alpha430 dated 7/30/03. I am particularly interested in what TENNIS has to say. If it is not appropriate to discuss another stock on this board, please post on Ragging BULL, ASPC.
One last comment. I would love to have the opportunity to meet you and Dr. Phan at the board meeting but I am the primary care giver to my wife and cannot travel. Perhaps next year my financial situation will change so that I will be able to travel and PARTY with you all.
