I remember back 20 years, Cramer saying on TV that IDCC was headquartered near him and he liked what he was seeing.
Jim has been a prime supporter of IDCC since way back in 1990's. I am very grateful to Jim! I used to edit Wirelessledger.com, which focused on IDCC in late 1990s and early 2000's. IHub was a very important message board then as it seems it is still now. I'm getting very interested in IDCC again lately. Stock Options (calls). are getting very interesting again. My son Lee and I send Greetings to old friends here! Thank you for hanging in here!
This is Bill Dalglish posting again after many years absent. Around the turn of the century, I edited the popular WirelessLedger.com, which focused positively on IDCC for many years. My son Lee and I hosted a public meeting the eve before each IDCC annual shareholder meeting in those years.
Wonderful to see so many old friends still posting here. To name some: Jim Lurgio, badger, teecee, My3Sons, loophole, orientbull, fish, sammdogg, Monterey, Macc, dws, scooby, vegas. You all, plus Ranger and Mickey (in blessed memory) were so helpful! It was always great fun hoisting a few beers with you the night before the annual shareholder meetings!
I've bought IDCC option calls today as I get back into the fold.
I'm 82 years old and in relatively good health, thanks be to God. Retired from parish ministry, but welcoming just-released state inmates into my parsonage for a "Fresh Start" the past dozen years.
Thank you to all posting here over the past two plus decades!
Bill Dalglish, CFP, D Min.
A Mickey Britt Blessing:
"Bring Mickey, O Lord God, into the house and gate of heaven; to enter into that gate and dwell in that house, where there shall be no darkness or dazzling, but one equal light; no noise nor silence, but one equal music; no fears nor hopes but one equal possession; no foes nor friends, but one equal identity; no ends nor beginning, but one equal eternity, in the habitations of thy majesty end of thy glory, world without end. Amen"
Mickey Britt's thoughts and posts have been an enlightenment and inspiration to me over many years on this and IDCC's previous boards.
May he rest in a well-deserved peace.
Father Bill Dalglish
PS: Greetings to my friends on this board. I am well.
Amen, bulldzr. Thoughts and prayers to you, Mickey, for a speedy recovery! You have been a wonderful source of information and insight about IDCC for 20 years!

Hey Toby,
Congrats to all the Oldtimers, both here and sadly passed! I'm sure glad I've hung in there these many years.

Gamco, Very high after hours trading volume. At Nasdaq.com "afterhours" It looks to me like two 140,000 share purchases at the closing price after the close this evening.
That looks like significant accumulation by a buyer and may indicate continued strength tomorrow.
Today was certainly an excellent day for us longs
Bill Dalglish
Thank you, Pisrat.
I am indeed still doing well at age 75. Actively investing, and as pastor, guiding about ten young men from extremely challenging backgrounds (including public housing and state penitentiaries) toward a "fresh start" by finding themselves, getting an education and starting careers. This ministry is being generously supported by profits from shares and options in IDCC that I have salted away in my Roth IRA since the late 1990's. (The counsel on IDCC as an investment from IHUB posters here was invaluable!)
I haven't figured out what the election of a new administration will mean for stock investing. (I wish my crystal ball was much clearer.) I am tentatively moving some assets to banks like BAC and GS while maintaining positions in IDCC, AAPL and OLED.
Good luck to all!

Correction: 5 pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) for IDCC CEO Bill Merritt interview on CNBC Fast Money this afternoon. (I forgot we are now on daylight savings time)
4 pm on central daylight time
Merritt interview just announced again a couple minutes ago on CNBC, where it has been flashing with Bill Merritt's photo and IDCC share price increase over and over today.
Bill Dalglish
CEO Bill Merritt 5 pm EST on CNBC Fast Money program is being announced on CNBC today.
It is great to see old hands' posts about IDCC here on IHub. Greetings to all the old timers!
I have not been invested in IDCC lately, but it looks like it is time to become invested in InterDigital once again. I have been concentrating my energy mostly on AAPL the past 18 months.
At 73, I am enjoying good health and frequent visits with my 3 year old grandson, Chance.
InterDigital looks to be very well positioned for future growth with the new Samsung licensing. I am looking forward to Bill Merritt's comments on CNBC later this afternoon.
Bill Dalglish
Ray: Sure miss your cogent comments and positive perspective. I hope you and Her Honor are doing well!
Bill Dalglish
AMCJAX/DATAROX: Agree! May have been an understanding like "IDCC will not entertain any bids for less than "X" (e.g. $5 billion), so don't send us a low bid." And no bids at that e.g. $5 billion amount were received.
If so, a hostile bid for perhaps $4 billion ($80 per share) would not surprise me. $3 billion hostile bid ($60 per share) surely seems possible.
I am adding to my position at current price.
Bill
Call it intuition. But its very positive!
I've been closely following InterDigital since before its Motorola court case loss back in 1995. I've edited two websites focusing on InterDigital, including WirelessLedger.com.
My intuition (gut instinct) is currently leading me to believe that very positive news about an acquisition of InterDigital will be coming in the next few weeks.
Factors that seem to be affecting my intuitive sense are recent remarks by analysts (eg last week's top recommendation on "Fab Four" on CNBC), media articles mentioning or spotlighting IDCC, analyst upgrades, major purchases of IDCC shares by big investors (eg Paulson), developments at major players (like Intel, Google, Apple, Microsoft) that seem to indicate high potential interest in beefing up smart phone capabilities with patents or engineers like InterDigital is offering.
I am probably also influenced by the negative postings here on IHub in that they offer almost nothing to back up their constantly repeated negativity. They are a counter-indicator actually affirming a positive InterDigital outcome for me.
My positive sense about InterDigital has been steadily strengthening over the past two weeks. My intuitions about InterDigital have not always been accurate, but over 16 years they have usually been reliable. I'm personally putting substantial retirement assets "where my intuition is leading me."
"Happy holidays" to all the great folks here on IHub!

Could Intel with IDCC patents offer "umbrella coverage" to manufacturers using Intel chips, as Qualcomm apparently does very successfully?
Thanks for this info, Data Rox.
With Intel recently announcing formation of a new division to manufacture smartphone chip sets for mobile phones and tablets, is the acquisition of InterDigital a step that would allow Intel to become a competitor with Qualcomm in phone/tablet chips?
Is Intel likely bidding to acquire InterDigital to accomplish the establishment of its new effort to move beyond computer chips (where it has 80% of the market) into phone and tablet chip sets? Would acquisition of IDCC give Intel instant credibility in this extremely important new market?

JPMorgan on Apple: Reiterates "overweight" Target $525
Apple can certainly afford to protect/strengthen its iPhone growth by acquiring InterDigital, IMO
Bill
BARRONS By Tiernan Ray
JP Morgan’s Mark Moskowitz this morning reiterates an Overweight rating on shares of Apple (AAPL) and a $525 price target after lifting his estimates on iPhone sales while also cutting his iPad estimates for this quarter.
There are “no signs of a plateau effect in end demand” for the iPhone, writes Moskowitz, with the company shipping perhaps 28 million units this quarter, up from his prior 25.3 million-unit forecast. He also raised his full-year iPhone estimate by 4.2 million units to 105.5 million, and raised his 2013 number by 1.5 million to 121.7 million.
The iPad may sell 13 million units this quarter, less than the original 13.3 million Moskowitz expected. He thinks there’s “no structural change to the iPad demand environment,” but he observes that “there has been limited uplift in build activity.” And, “To a lesser extent, the Amazon (AMZN) Kindle Fire’s better-than-expected momentum with more price sensitive consumers is a factor, too.”
Moskowitz now models Apple making $38.69 billion in revenue and $9.87 a share in profit this quarter, up from $37.26 billion and $9.45 previously.

Gungrey, Boom&Gloom et.al: So bottom line is this...
InterDigital patents are worth more than Nortel's (which fetched $4.5B) and could be worth much more, IF MPartners methodology makes sense.
So... IDCC likely will be acquired for a minimum of $5 billion ($100 a share) and possibly much higher pps of $118-$160).
That is entirely believable to me and, admittedly, a conservative stance.
(My gut tells me IDCC will be acquired for $5 to $6 billion in total, by a consortium interested in various parts or patent families. I believe things are now looking very good for such an acquisition in the next few weeks.)

Would IDCC licensing agreement with Apple be nullified if your consortium buys InterDigital's patents (and the rest of the company)?
enyah and wireless wazoo, your idea seems very plausible if Apple would now have to get a new license and deal with the Android partners to get it. That would seem to change the whole dynamic.
Bill
Exactly. $2 billion bid does not need consortium
Consortium makes more sense in $4 billion and up range, IMO.
Good insight, Triangle!
From Barrons this morning (Thanks Sailfree)
Low bid IS good strategy in initial round(s)
Unless the strategy is to blow everybody else away, it makes sense to slowly bid up so as not to overpay.
If you are eventually willing to bid, say $5 billion, why not follow the price up and not pay more than necessary.
Bill
RE:
Olddog: Good point re Market didn't see the the actual DealReporter info, just what was reported about it.
I have updated my post to reflect your insight.
My point remains: Not unusual at all that a couple of bids were low ball in an intial round of bidding process.
Bill
If DealReporter is accurate, what do we know...
I would not be surprised if (what has been reported to us about) the DealReporter was accurate in what was reported said. BUT what did this report tell us?
I believe the report (as reported to us so far) simply says this:
1. A couple of the bidders submitted bids of $1 to $2 billion...
2. (but left out detail such as: INITIAL bids in an ongoing process.)
The very sparse detail in the DealReporter's very incomplete report is entirely believable to me.
But what the report doesn't tell us is this:
1. The amounts of any OTHER bids IDCC has received in this initial round, or
2. the amount of the highest bid received in this initial round, or
3. how much the highest bid WILL BE in the second round, yet to come, or
4. how much the highest bid will be in the FINAL ROUND, whenever that occurs, or
5. Whether the BOD will recommend acceptance of an offer and what that offer will look like.
BOTTOM LINE: I expected that a couple of bids would be very low ball, simply to allow the bidder to remain in the bidding process in order to get the lay of the land, ie find out how the bidding is going, with no intention of a winning bid on first round.
I am surprised that the market was shocked by this DealReporter rumor. I fully expect the share price will continue its recovery in subsequent days when it is realized how normal a couple low ball bids are at this initial stage of the process.

BlueTower: Excellent analysis in first post! Thanks! (eom)
Doesn't MPartners have IDCC relationship beyond analyst coverage?
I seem to recall that InterDigital has used MPartners for some kind of financial service in the past year or so. If so, there may be a multi-pronged relationship with InterDigital. Maybe there is a wall between the financial services and analyst departments of MPartners, however.
Is my memory faulty on a wider relationship with IDCC than just analyst coverage? Or is this perhaps a reason why MPartners seem to be particularly perceptive (and highly interested) about InterDigital?
The Investor Village post is an interesting one. Thanks, Flyboy!
