JM, your entire post is full of proven lies
Barnes because he got Bush in ahead of other worthy applicants.
BARNES CHANGED HIS STORY ON CBS...EVEN HIS DAUGHTER SAID HE LIED
Hodges and Killian because they agreed to cook the books on George's National Guard misbehavior.
THEY AGREED TO COOK THE BOOKS? ACCORDING TO WHO? CBS? FAKED DOCUMENTS?
The Bush family for exerting pressure on the National Guard.
WHERE'S THE PROOF? WHO EXERTED PRESSURE ON WHOM?
Did FoxNews ever use faked documents to go after Kerry?????
> Why did they overlook he refusal to follow orders and get a physical? That is insubordination!
He didn't. He was no longer on flight duty, he didn't need to take a flight physical:
---------------------------------------------
Despite the questionable authenticity of a document dated May 4, 1972, purportedly showing that Mr. Bush was "ordered to report ... no later than 14 May to conduct annual physical examination (flight)" — an exam that the young lieutenant skipped — White House Communications Director Dan Bartlett said Mr. Bush had talked with his commanding officer about a planned move to a base in Alabama, which did not fly the plane on which he was certified, the F-102.
"I don't accept that premise, that he defied a direct order. He did not take a flight physical because he was no longer going to fly," Mr. Bartlett told The Washington Times.
"It's not as if he was defying, as people try to say, a direct order. He was speaking to the very commanders who were in charge of the unit at the time about his personal situation and what he was doing and explaining why he wasn't going to take the flight exam. ... I think the commanders were obvious in saying, then keeping your flight status up was irrelevant."
Mr. Bush moved to Alabama in the spring of 1972 to work on the Senate campaign of Winton Blount, a family friend. He returned to his unit at Ellington, Texas, that November. Until he received permission to transfer to reserve status so he could attend Harvard Business School in the fall of 1973, he participated in nonflying drills and worked at an inner-city poverty program.
To dispel the charge that the president disobeyed a direct order, Mr. Bartlett said another disputed document — an unsigned memo dated May 19, 1972, that CBS News attributed to Mr. Bush's former commander, the late Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian — says, "We talked about him getting his flight physical situation fixed." He noted that the memo said Mr. Bush "says he will do that in Alabama if he stays in a flight status."
"Even if you take the documents at face value and said that they were authentic, you can tell by one of the memos where it said that he talked to Bush about his flight exam. We obviously interpret that as he was working with his commanders on the very issue as to whether he needed to take it or not. He obviously ended up not taking it because he was not flying," Mr. Bartlett said.
Mr. Bartlett said he had showed the documents — broadcast last week by CBS News and questioned by many analysts — to Mr. Bush "and he did not remember them."
"He remembers not taking the flight exam, obviously, but he said, 'It wasn't a big deal because I was going to Alabama where I wasn't going to be flying,' " Mr. Bartlett said.
Until yesterday, the White House had deflected the question of whether the 25-year-old Lt. Bush had defied a direct order. Asked several times since the story broke last week, spokesman Scott McClellan said repeatedly that Mr. Bush had fulfilled his obligations and was honorably discharged after his term of service.
CBS' idea of a credible source:
WHO IS BEN BARNES?
A Deep-Pocketed Kerry Partisan Who Can't Keep His Stories Straight
______________________________________________
Barnes Under Oath
Under Oath, Barnes Testified He Had No Contact With Bush Family Concerning National Guard. "Ben Barnes, then the speaker of the Texas House, said in 1999 that Sidney Adger, a Houston businessman and longtime friend of the Bush family whose son also won a slot in the 147th, had asked him to help get Mr. Bush into the Guard. Mr. Barnes, who acknowledged a role only after he was questioned under oath, also said that he had spoken to the head of the Texas Air National Guard on Mr. Bush's behalf, but had no contact with anyone in the Bush family. And there is no direct evidence that Mr. Bush's family pulled strings to get him into the 147th. Mr. Bush is firmly on record denying it, as is the commander of the unit, and there is no paper trail showing any influence by the Bush family." (David Barstow, "In Haze Of Guard Records, A Bit Of Clarity," The New York Times, 2/15/04)
Barnes Said Reports He Helped Bush At His Father's Urging Were "False." "Former Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes denied a magazine report Thursday that he helped George W. Bush get a place in the Texas Air National Guard at the urging of Bush's father. Bush, the Republican presidential front-runner, has repeatedly denied that he received preferential treatment in being accepted into the Guard during the Vietnam War. … 'I never spoke to Congressman Bush about his son,' Barnes said Thursday. 'The story is false.'" (Renae Merle, "Barnes Denies Report That He Helped Bush Into The National Guard," The Associated Press, 7/15/99)
In Fall Of 1999, Barnes Said Bush Family Never Asked To Get President Bush Into National Guard. "Mr. Bush has consistently said he never requested special treatment, though Ben Barnes, who was speaker of the Texas House in 1968, said in 1999 that he had been asked by a Houston businessman -- not by the Bush family -- to recommend Mr. Bush for a pilot's slot, and that he had done so." (David M. Halbfinger, "Three Decades Later, Vietnam Remains A Hot Issue," The New York Times, 8/29/04)
But Now, Barnes' Story "Subject To Change"
Today, Barnes Claims He Is "Ashamed" He Got President Bush Into Texas Air National Guard. "Former Texas House Speaker Ben Barnes said he is 'more ashamed at myself than I've ever been' because he helped President Bush and the sons of other wealthy families get into the Texas National Guard so they could avoid serving in Vietnam. 'I got a young man named George W. Bush into the National Guard ... and I'm not necessarily proud of that, but I did it,' Barnes, a Democrat, said in a video clip recorded May 27 before a group of John Kerry supporters in Austin. Barnes, who was House speaker when Bush entered the Guard, later became lieutenant governor." (Bobby Ross Jr., "Former Lawmaker Says He Got Bush Into The Texas Guard," The Associated Press, 8/28/04)
Yet, According To February 2004 New York Times Article, Barnes' Story "Was Subject To Change And There Were No Documents To Support His Claims." "Local reporters could coax one former Democratic state official into admitting, off the record, that he had interceded on Mr. Bush's behalf at the request of either a prominent Dallas businessman or George H. W. Bush, who was then a member of Congress. But the official's story -- the source was later revealed to be former Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes -- was subject to change and there were no documents to support his claims." (Mimi Swartz, "In Search Of The President's Missing Years," The New York Times, 2/27/04)

Barnes Considers John Kerry Close Personal Friend. "Barnes, a government consultant with offices in Austin, Chicago and Washington, said: 'I'm just an enthusiastic participant' who considers as personal friends Corzine, Daschle and Kerry, whom he got to know during summer vacations in Nantucket." Barnes Is Considered "A Definite In" In Kerry Administration. "[Barnes has] known Kerry since the 1980s. 'I don't know who's going to be in and who's going to be out' of a possible Kerry administration, Barnes said. 'But John Kerry has been sympathetic to Texas in the past. ... I would expect him to listen to our problems if he's in the White House.' Barnes is a definite in, though he says he'll keep working as a lobbyist based in Austin." (Jay Root, "Texas Democrats Are Waiting In The Wings," Fort Worth Star Telegram, 7/31/04)
Barnes Owns Home Near Kerry's In Nantucket. "Now a lobbyist and consultant, Barnes has a house near Kerry's in Nantucket, Mass., and committed to Kerry's White House bid nearly three years ago on the grounds of the Nantucket Golf Club." (Jay Root, "Texas Democrats Are Waiting In The Wings," Fort Worth Star Telegram, 7/31/04)
Barnes Is Kerry "Super-Bundler" Fundraiser. "Eleven [Kerry super-bundlers] are from Texas, including Dallas plaintiff's lawyer Fred Baron and lobbyist Ben Barnes, a Lyndon Johnson protégé who served as lieutenant governor and is one of the national Democrat Party's most prodigious fund-raisers. 'If someone had told me last quarter that John Kerry would have raised as much money as he's been able to, I'd have said it couldn't happen. But I'm seeing it happen,' said Mr. Barnes, whose lobby clients have included American Airlines and the chemical giant Huntsman Corp." (Wayne Slater, "Vested Interests In Kerry Lawyers, Lobbyists Top Donors List," Dallas Morning News, 7/26/04)
Opening Night Of Democratic Convention In Boston, "Kerry Adviser And Veteran Political Fund-Raiser"Barnes Hosted Party For Convention-Goers. "On the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, more than 250 well-dressed people strayed from the convention, enjoying bubbly drinks and appetizers such as tablespoon-sized shrimp salads at a party hosted by former Texas Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes. Barnes, a Kerry adviser and veteran political fund-raiser, said he scheduled his event to remind potential donors about the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, which seeks to help Democrats recapture a majority in the U.S. Senate, where the GOP has a two-vote majority." (W. Gardner Selby, "Texas' Last 'Old Lion' Still On Prowl For Funds," San Antonio Express-Texas, 7/30/04)
In October 2003, Barnes Hosted Fundraiser For John Kerry. "Democratic presidential contender John Kerry, counting on the Texas-Massachusetts connection that played better in the 1960s than it did in the 1980s, made three fund-raising stops in Texas on Wednesday as he campaigned toward primary season. Kerry, a senator from Massachusetts, spoke to about 60 supporters at the Four Seasons Hotel here between stops in Dallas and Houston….In introducing Kerry here, former Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes likened him to Kennedy. 'He possesses the talent, the courage, the experience and the depth that will make him, as Jack Kennedy was in 1961, a president that has the determination to lead this country,' Barnes said." (Ken Herman, "Kerry Plays Up Texas' Link To His Home State," Austin American-Statesman, 10/2/03)
Barnes Is A Partisan Democrat
Daschle Called Barnes "The Fifty-First Democratic Senator." "Yet here he is in the rarefied atmosphere of big power and big-time politics -- one of the chief financial and strategic architects of the Democratic resurgence to parity (and subsequently control) in the Senate. Majority leader Tom Daschle has called him 'the fifty-first Democratic senator.'" (Paul Burka, "So What If He Never Got To Be Governor Or President?" Texas Monthly, 9/01)
Barnes Attended Clinton Coffee Intended To Raise $500,000. "Newly released White House documents show that President Clinton's political operatives expected to raise $500,000 from a White House coffee for wealthy Texans in the summer, calling into question Clinton's assertion that 'no price tag was placed' on White House events. In a July 14 memo to White House officials, campaign Chairman Peter Knight suggested adding the Texas coffee klatch to Clinton's schedule as part of an effort to raise $7.8 million in the state. Knight predicted that the event would generate $500,000 in political contributions. About 20 Texans, including former Gov. Dolph Briscoe, Land Commissioner Garry Mauro and former Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes, attended the Aug. 23 get-together with the president." (Ron Hutcheson, "Clinton's Fund-Raising Assertion Questioned," Fort Worth Star-Telegram, 2/27/97)
In 1996, Barnes Endorsed Clinton/Gore '96. (Lisa R. Davis, "CEOs And Business Leaders Endorse President Clinton," Press Release, 10/8/96)

Barnes' Ethical Mishaps
Sharpstown Bank Scandal In 1971 Ended Barnes' Political Career. "The Sharpstown Scandal: This scandal involved quick-profit stock sales for lawmakers and state officials in 1971-72. Houston financier Frank Sharp arranged the stock loans from his Sharpstown State Bank, purportedly to grease the passage of two banking bills. Two dozen former and sitting officials were accused, and others suffered by association. House Speaker Gus Mutscher and another legislator were convicted of conspiring to accept a bribe. Gov. Preston Smith lost the governorship after his profit was disclosed. Half the Texas House was voted out of office or didn't seek re-election. And Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes, a rising political star, was caught in the housecleaning when he tried to win the governor's seat. LBJ had even predicted that Barnes would make it to the White House." (Carolyn Barta, "Texas Has Left A Lasting Mark In The World Of Politics," The Dallas Morning News, 3/4/99)
In 1998, Barnes Was Accused Of Funneling $500,000 To Former Sales Manager Of Corporation Running Texas Lottery. "The former national sales manager for Gtech Holdings Corp., which operates the Texas lottery, was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison Thursday for stealing from the company. …His sentencing two years after his conviction was delayed by a controversy over information released by prosecutors linking him and former Texas Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes to a similar kickback scheme. In a sentencing memo in the Smith case, New Jersey prosecutors alleged that Mr. Barnes, then Gtech's chief Texas lobbyist, funneled $500,000 to Mr. Smith. The memo containing the allegations was posted on the Internet. Mr. Barnes denied that he had done anything wrong, and Judge Politan ordered prosecutors to apologize. In August, they acknowledged that they had disclosed secret information. Mr. Barnes said at the time that the money he gave Mr. Smith was for work not connected to the lottery. Mr. Barnes has never been charged with wrongdoing in connection with the allegation. Gtech bought out Mr. Barnes' contract for $23 million after Texas lottery commissioners questioned Gtech business practices." (George Kuempel, "Ex-Official For Gtech Sentenced," The Dallas Morning News, 10/9/98)
Investment Partnership With John Connally Went Bust In 1988 After Connally And Barnes Racked Up $200 Million In Debt. "He joined with his protégé Ben Barnes, the former lieutenant governor of Texas, to embark on the business of building offices and condominiums and shopping malls, borrowing millions of dollars on the strength of his famous name, arguably the most famous in the state. At the time, Connally's real estate and energy investments appeared to be solid. Oil was selling for $33 a barrel and seemed destined to go higher. Texas was on a roll and John Connally was riding the crest of an economic surge that was making millionaires overnight. But Connally's timing was off. The decline of Texas and the rest of the energy belt began in 1982, just about the time he and Barnes began their spending and borrowing spree in earnest, taking the big chances. Files for Bankruptcy. Five years later, after a fruitless struggle for economic survival, Connally admitted that betting big had been a mistake. On July 31 of last year, he filed for bankruptcy. At the time, he and Barnes owed creditors more than $200 million." (J. Michael Kennedy, "Symbol Of Troubled Texas," Los Angeles Times, 1/22/88)
Imagine FoxNews running a smear story on Kerry using faked documents from an unidentified source. Imagine Roger Ailes and Brit Hume stonewalling other media outlets for 6 days...unwilling to let independent experts examine the documents.
The Kerry campaign along with their friends in the "mainstream" media (Rather, Jennings, Brokaw, Matthews, Olbermann, Blitzer, etc.) would be screaming from the highest mountain. It would be the lead story, front page in every paper in America.
Just watch and see how CBS gets away with this one.
Go ahead, change the subject. The OLD MEDIA is full of liberals and they can't figure out why they're getting their butts kicked in the ratings.
Oh, I see. And those who watch ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, and PBS are somehow getting the straight scoop? Face it man, these jokers have be feeding the public a left-slanted version of the news for years. Once the public had an alternative, they gave the "mainstream" media the middle finger and bolted.
The Standard doesn't pretend to be an unbiased news journal. Do you want to talk about The New Republic, Mother Jones, etc. etc.????
Face it, the "mainstream", old media has a left wing bias.
Matthews and Olbermann are shills for Kerry.

Have you ever seen Alan Colmes and Greta Van Susteren, those right-wing wackos on FoxNews?
Let's see, you have Fox on the one hand...and CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, PBS, and MSNBC on the other. That's fair in the mind of a liberal.
Do you ever wonder why FoxNews is killing these guys in the ratings???
Isn't is funny how a guy who couldn't even type wrote his memos on an IBM Selectric?
I disagree. Watch how CBS handles this. They'll bury this story so deep...you'll never see it again after the next 24 hours blows by. Do you really think CBS will fall on their sword, admit sloppiness in the least, if not complicity? Do you really think CBS will launch an extensive, high profile investigation on the origins of the forgeries?
Hell no.
I still waiting to see the big diagram in the NYT illustrating the Kerry connection to the 527s that are blasting Bush...including Ben Barnes and Texans for Truth.
This forgery story was inevitable. The "mainsteam" media; CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, NPR, WashPost, NYT, LA Times, Time, Newsweek, etc. have been pro-Kerry and anti-Bush from the start. Kerry and his supporters aren't under any scrutiny - they've had a free pass while the media continually looks for opportunities to attack Bush. They got sloppy this time.
"The more basic question is how could a rabble of bloggers, in one day, provide hard core proof of forgery when major news organizations took those documents at face value? Most fundamental of all, why did the New York Times, the Boston Globe and CBS allow themselves to be used for such a transparent attempt to slander President Bush? Out in the blogosphere there are a swarm of people rooting for the answers."
http://techcentralstation.com/091004G.html
JMKel, apparently nobody has the orignal documents. The documents posted by CBS looked like they were run through a copy machine 100 times...probably to help disguise the flaws. The biggest blunder the forger made was using Times New Roman. Times New Roman is NOT in the typewriter font database used by forensic document experts.
THE PROWLER reports that CBS got the dubious documents from the Kerry campaign:
More than six weeks ago, an opposition research staffer for the Democratic National Committee received documents purportedly written by President George W. Bush's Texas Air National Guard squadron commander, the late Col. Jerry Killian. . . .
A CBS producer, who initially tipped off The Prowler about the 60 Minutes story, says that despite seeking professional assurances that the documents were legitimate, there was uncertainty even among the group of producers and researchers working on the story.
"The problem was we had one set of documents from Bush's file that had Killian calling Bush 'an exceptionally fine young officer and pilot.' And someone who Killian said 'performed in an outstanding manner.' Then you have these new documents and the tone and content are so different."
The CBS producer said that some alarms bells went off last week when the signatures and initials of Killian on the documents in hand did not match up with other documents available on the public record, but producers chose to move ahead with the story. "This was too hot not to push. If there were doubts, those people didn't show it," says the producer, who works on a rival CBS News program.
The Selectric didn't have Times Roman.
Read the stories below. Isn't it amazing how much changes in two years?

Russia Says Could Strike 'Terrorist' Bases Anywhere
Wed Sep 8, 2004 05:17 AM ET
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia is prepared to launch pre-emptive strikes on bases used for training militants anywhere in the world, a senior general was quoted as saying on Wednesday.
"As for launching pre-emptive strikes on terrorist bases, we will carry out all measures to liquidate terrorist bases in any region of the world," General Yuri Baluevsky said, according to Russian news agencies. "However, this does not mean that we will launch nuclear strikes."

Putin Warns Bush Against Unilateral Action on Iraq
Russian President also needles U.S. leader about the apparent survival of bin Laden
by Mark MacKinnon
RUSSIA -- Russian President Vladimir Putin warned George W. Bush yesterday against unilateral action in Iraq, and suggested the U.S. President needs to keep a close eye on his allies, as well as his perceived foes, in the war on terrorism.
Published on Saturday, November 23, 2002 by the Toronto Globe & Mail
> CBS officials insisted that the network had done due diligence in checking out the authenticity of the documents with independent experts over six weeks. The senior CBS official said the network had talked to four typewriting and handwriting experts "who put our concerns to rest" and confirmed the authenticity of Killian's signature.
I ask CBS, who are these "experts"? Names please? Qualifications please? How do they explain the Times Roman font being used on a typewriter???
Questions for Dan and the gang at CBS:
1. Who was the document expert you consulted with? What are his/her qualifications?
2. Where did you get the documents? You say "documents we are told were taken from Col. Killian's personal file." Who told you this? Don't you think the American public has the right to know???
----------------------------------
From cbsnews.com
Independent document examiner Sandra Ramsey Lines said the memos looked like they had been produced on a computer using Microsoft Word software. Lines, a document expert and fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, pointed to a superscript — a smaller, raised "th" in "111th Fighter Interceptor Squadron" — as evidence indicating forgery.
Microsoft Word automatically inserts superscripts in the same style as the two on the memos obtained by CBS, she said.
"I'm virtually certain these were computer generated," Lines said after reviewing copies of the documents at her office in Paradise Valley, Ariz. She produced a nearly identical document using her computer's Microsoft Word software.
In the Wednesday broadcast, 60 Minutes said the memos were "documents we are told were taken from Col. Killian's personal file. The program says it consulted a handwriting analyst and document expert who believes the material is authentic.
Because the Dems, in their arrogance, hatred and stupidity assumed nobody (mainly their shills in the "mainstream" media) would question the athenticity of these documents.
All eyes are on CBS right now. How will they try to squirm out of this one? The swallowed deep... hook, line and sinker. Their blind bias allowed this to happen. There's absolutely no scrutiny by the "mainstream" media when claims are made by Bush haters.
Why the CBS docs are forgeries:
Dr. Bouffard ran this number (4) and could not find a match in his entire database of over 4,000 typewriter fonts that have been maintained and collected into his computer database since 1988. Otherwise, the font is very indicative of Times New Roman, the font that is only available on computer word processing programs.
He looked through old papers he's written, and noted that he's come up against the inconsistency of the "4" several previous times with forgeries that attempt to duplicate old proportional spaced documents with a computer word processing program.
* Regarding the small "th" after the date, Dr. Bouffard told me that it was possible to order specialty keys that would duplicate the automatic miniaturization completed by word processors after a numerical date, but it was certainly not standard, and wouldn't make a lot of sense in a military setting. "That by itself, while suspicious, is not impossible, but in conjunction with the (font irregularity of the) number four, it is really significant," he said.
* Dr. Bouffard said that signature analysis isn't that relevant because the signature could have easily been copied and pasted onto one of the photocopied forgeries from another document.
* He said that he didn't know who CBS contacted to verify the document's authenticity, but that there is really only one other man that may be more qualified to determine authentic typefaces than himself. I think that the burden of proof may be on CBS to reveal this information.
I asked him to put a percentage on the chances that this was a fake, and he said that was "hard to put a number on it." I then suggested "90%?" Again he said it's "hard to put an exact number, but I'd say it's at least that high, sure. I pretty much agree that that font is Times New Roman."
Fluffy, did you read the whole thing?
Everyone readily admits typewriters with proportional fonts we're available at the time, just uncommon. The crux of his analysis was based on the font characteristics, the closed 4 for example. Someone also notes the margins and indents match the default MS Word settings exactly.
Bush Gains Solid Lead, Poll Shows
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A9060-2004Sep9.html
Ergo, the IBM Selectric is old news. Read the article I posted. This guy is one of the top two experts in authenticating typefaces / typewriter capabilities. In order to generate the document CBS acquired, the military would have had to jump through some serious hoops.
Mr. Bouffard (and other forensic document examiners) examined the veracity of various documents for over 30 years. Beginning in 1988, Mr. Bouffard hired a programmer to write a computer database program that catalogues the nearly 4,000 typefaces that appear in the Haas Atlas. This computer program is now a forensic standard that is sold as a companion to the Haas Atlas by American Society of Questioned Document Examiners (ASQDE). Though semi-retired, Dr. Bouffard is one of the top two experts in forensic document examination (regarding typefaces) in the country.
Brainlessone, read this:
There's going to be some serious crow-eating over at CBS. I hope Rove has fun with this.

Admiral speaks out, disputes Kerry's account of 1st wound
August 27, 2004
BY ROBERT NOVAK SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST
NEW YORK -- Retired Rear Adm. William L. Schachte Jr. said Thursday in his first on-the-record interview about the swift boat veterans dispute that "I was absolutely in the skimmer" in the early morning on Dec. 2, 1968, when Lt. (j.g.) John Kerry was involved in an incident that led to his first Purple Heart.
"Kerry nicked himself with a M-79 [grenade launcher]," Schachte said in a telephone interview from his home in Charleston, S.C. He said, "Kerry requested a Purple Heart."
Schachte, a lieutenant, said he was in command of the small boat called a Boston whaler or skimmer, with Kerry aboard in his first combat mission in the Vietnam War. The third crew member was an enlisted man, whose name Schachte did not remember.
Two enlisted men who appeared at the podium with Kerry at the Democratic National Convention in Boston have asserted that they were alone in the small boat with Kerry, with no other officer present. Schachte said it "was not possible" for Kerry to have gone out alone so soon after joining the swift boat command in late November 1968.
Kerry supporters said no critics of the Democratic presidential nominee ever were aboard a boat with him in combat. Washington lawyer Lanny Davis has contended that Schachte was not aboard the Boston whaler and says the statement that Schachte was aboard in Unfit for Command undermines that critical book's credibility.
Schachte until now has refused to speak out publicly on this question and agreed to give only two interviews. One was a television interview with Lisa Meyers of NBC News, for broadcast Thursday night. The second was a print interview with me, for publication today.
Schachte described the use of the skimmer operating very close to shore as a technique that he personally designed to flush out enemy forces so that the larger swift boats could move in. Around 3 a.m. on Dec. 2, Schachte said, the skimmer -- code-named "Batman" -- fired a hand-held flare. He said that after Kerry's M-16 rifle jammed, the new officer picked up the M-79 and, "I heard a 'thunk.' There was no fire from the enemy," he said.
Patrick Runyon and William Zaladonis are the two enlisted men who said they were aboard the skimmer and did not know Schachte. However, two other former officers interviewed Thursday confirmed that Schachte was the originator of the technique and always was aboard the Boston whaler for these missions.
Grant Hibbard, who as a lieutenant commander was Schachte's superior officer, confirmed that Schachte always went on these skimmer missions and said, "I don't think he [Kerry] was alone" on his first assignment. Hibbard said he had told Kerry to "forget it" when he asked for a Purple Heart.
Ted Peck, another swift boat commander, said, "I remember Bill [Schachte] telling me it didn't happen" -- that is, Kerry getting an enemy-inflicted wound. He said it would be "impossible" for Kerry to have been in the skimmer without Schachte.
"I was astonished by Kerry's version" [in his book Tour of Duty] of what happened Dec. 2, Schachte said Thursday. When asked to support the Kerry critics in the swift boat controversy, Schachte said, "I didn't want to get involved." But he said he gradually began to change his mind when he saw his own involvement and credibility challenged, starting with Davis on CNN's "Crossfire" on Aug. 12.
The next time he saw Kerry after the first Purple Heart incident, Schachte said, was "about 20 years" later on the U.S. Senate subway in the basement of the Russell Senate Office Building. "I called, 'Hey, John.' He replied, 'Batman.' I was absolutely amazed by his memory." He said they "talked about having lunch" but never did it.
Schachte said he never has been contacted by or talked to anybody in the Bush-Cheney campaign or any Republican organization. He said he has been a political independent who votes for candidates of both parties.
Developing Tradeable Systems
When you have an hour or so to kill, check out this excellent online seminar by Keith Fitschen (developer of the Aberration trading system). I found his approach to system development extremely enlightening. The big takeaway: You need far, far more data then you would expect to develop a robust system...something that won't break.
This guy is a math whiz. Check it out.

RAMPAGE OF MEDIA BIAS AND DISTORTION
"It's interesting because that same Washington Post reporter that prepared that, we contacted him on Monday and Tuesday of this week when we had 50 swift boat people here and invited him to talk to the seven or eight people who were involved in the March 13 incident who knew that there was no fire. He declined that invitation."
COLMES: This is Alan. As we said before, and I've said to you before, thank you for serving. I think that everybody who serves, in my view is an American hero.
But look, here we have a situation where Larry Thurlow, story in the Washington Post today, who swore in an affidavit that he was not under fire, that Kerry was not under fire. And now documents revealed today say exactly the opposite.
How do you respond?
O'NEILL: Yes, I'd like to respond to that, Alan. Larry Thurlow was probably the most decorated officer in our entire unit. The Bronze Star he received was by no means the highest medal he received.
What the Washington Post article claimed is that a citation that Larry Thurlow received that day made reference to fire in the citation.
It's a citation that Larry Thurlow had never prepared. It's a citation that was prepared, based on a report that John Kerry prepared that day on March 13, an after-action report.
It's interesting because that same Washington Post reporter that prepared that, we contacted him on Monday and Tuesday of this week when we had 50 swift boat people here and invited him to talk to the seven or eight people who were involved in the March 13 incident who knew that there was no fire. He declined that invitation.
The other important thing in this article is he admits for the first time that the "no man left behind" story told by Kerry at the Democratic convention is false.
He admits that that of the five boats, Kerry's story being all five boats ran away and then Kerry came back. He admits what really happened is one boat was blown up, three boats stayed with it. Kerry took off, and Kerry simply came back to where the other boats were.
>Given his recorded behavior, it is quite possible that he knew about the impending attacks of 9/11 and let them happen to bolster his political position.
Do you really believe this crap?
Show me one story, one article that does a good job of getting to the bottom of any of these charges:
Did Kerry spend Christmas in Cambodia? Yes or No?
Did Kerry witness war attrocities? When? Where? By whom?
Was Kerry under enemy fire at Bay Hap? Yes or No?
All of these can be investigated - there are documents, eyewitnesses, etc., but the media isn't interested in getting to the bottom of any of it. Why didn't the WP reporter meet with 8 eyewitnesses to the Bay Hap incident? Why???????
You won't get facts from JM.
This is a verifiable, confirmed lie. Libs like JM will continue to use.
"never got Bin Laden (an old family friend)"
You might not like GW, but at least he shows up for work.
