Yeah, it's amazing how Apple's stock price can't keep up with their earnings growth.
Don't worry, Blackrock will not be taking over Intel.
Apple will.
Sounds like a pretty smart strategy to me. What's HP/intel's response supposed to be?
Shrug, they can say or spin whatever they want, it doesn't matter anymore. This is a deathblow for Itanium, from here on out the writing is on the wall. Any and all protestations to the contrary notwithstanding. Good riddance IMHO, for years Itanium has been nothing but a distraction and a waste of resources better deployed elsewhere.
I'm sure you'll get immense enjoyment out of this:

Amusing rant from Charlie:

Sigh, I've got a better strategy. Choose one:
MRVL 12.85B
NVDA 14.01B
BRCM 23.48B
TXN 41.54B ouch
QCOM 93.86B double ouch
Man does selling off Xscale look stupid now.
Heh. Wouldn't it be funny if Steve were saving all that cash to make a bid on Intel? Almost seems possible the way things are going.

Yeah, I couldn't agree more. I mentioned the Atrix before here, it was star of CES complete with an original iPhone "this looks like something from the future" vibe to it.
Intel has a huge ace with its process lead. They have to take advantage of it and compete head to head with ARM on Perf/Watt. X86 everywhere is not working. X86 as a barrier to entry in the CPU field is breaking down fast. Intel needs to accept that and move forward instead of fighting past battles.
Truth. Upgrade made no sense to me. Well, this is an obvious signal to dump remaining AMD. Way too much risk that Dirk's taking the fall for BD being a flop. This plus I like the deal with Nvidia from both ends. Overall positive for INTC. Holding my shares, might even add a bit.
Consumers now make up 66% of Intel's business.

For many if not most of them, ARM can provide all the power they need for the things they run; web browsing, content consumption, social media, and do it in a smaller and less power hungry format. iPad is already demonstrating this in a big way. Meanwhile, Intel tablets are hardly visible and smartphones are nowhere in sight.
If that weren't enough MS has already demonstrated Office, Real Office not mobile Office, on ARM. Sure Busineses and Gamers will need more horsepower, but even there X86 is rapidly turning into unneeded baggage.
I didn't say Nvidia was a world beater, but ARM + Android and soon ARM + Windows is giving the rest of the world the opportunity to challenge Intel head on without the hurdle of x86 compatibility holding them back. Intel is moving WAY TOO SLOW.
Wanna see the future? It's right here:

Here is another wake up call:

It's funny watching Nvidia skyrocket on T2 news and announcements. Intel had every opportunity to buy them back when AMD bought ATI. Instead they chose to go it alone with X86 everywhere, sold off XScale, developed Larrabee and Atom.
Now Larrabee is dead, Atom stagnant with Tablets and Phones nowhere to be seen, ARM going from strength to strength, and Intel is spending the money they could have bought Nvidia with to buy MFE?
Very disappointed with Intel's execution and vision. I'd consider dumping this stock if it weren't so cheap atm. It's the worst performer in my portfolio.
Nvidia Licences ARM Architecture

To overcome this perception, Intel needs to partner with a consumer products company that is more inventive than Apple, and together come up with products that are superior to Apple's. Is it possible ?
Yes. There is only one possible answer to this question, and it is obvious. Google. An intelligent SoC maker would get together with Google and work hand-in-hand with them and device makers, developing the software tools necessary to make Android into a killer tablet/content consumption/gaming platform that can rival the iPad. At the same time, Google would return the favor by reigning in the fragmentation that is hampering their platform and declare that SoC maker's product as the reference platform for its next generation of Android, insuring that that SoC company powers the next generation of mobile devices.
Good job, Nvidia.

This is what they are going to fight back against Apple with? $799 for an Atom powered netbook without a keyboard? Between the $499 iPad and $999 for the new MacBook Air this thing is going exactly nowhere. It's a joke.
Sigh.
Lenovo says PC demand slowed at end of quarter
http://www.reuters.com/article/idCNLDE69I2GS20101019?rpc=44
Quarter to quarter revs were below the typical seasonal gain from Q2 to Q3, guidance was below the typical seasonal guidance from Q3 to Q4. Simple as that.
Nvidia is responding to alot of rumors of an upcoming Motorola "superphone" that is supposed to be sporting Tegra 2 and Android 3.0, that and a Tegra sporting tablet hitting the market (at long last) next week. Tablets and phones are all the market cares about these days. Below seasonal results and guidance from Intel is certainly not going to change that. I have a lot of hope for Intel's eventually breaking into these markets, plus a nice kicker from SB shortly, but until then it may well be dullsville for the stock price.
Double post.
I don't expect the iPad to eat half of the laptop market, but it should be noted that until now there were and still are large parts of the globe that the iPad is not even available yet (in fact it launches in China today). Then there are the ARM/Android tablets to come. In other words, the full impact has yet to be felt. Scary.

The CEO of Best Buy just said the iPad is cannibalizing 50% of the company’s laptop sales, the Wall Street Journal reports.
OMG it's even worse than I ever imagined, and here's more.
http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/09/17/notebook-sales-growth-goes-negative-can-we-blame-the-ipad-yet/?source=yahoo_quote
Do you actually understand MFE’s business? Or are you basing comments like the above on cursory knowledge of one product?
I understand that Intel paid a 60% premium to buy a business unrelated to their core business. I understand that Intel has a history of complete failure in prior similar transactions. I understand through long and painful experience that MFE's core product is pure garbage with superior free alternatives. I understand that that is 7+ Billion dollars that won't be returned to shareholders in the form of a dividend or share buyback. Most of all I understand that my shares in Intel have taken a precipitous drop since the announcement.
Spell-checkers do not help with usage errors such as using rational instead of rationale
This buyout was lacking both in rationality and rationale. While writing, I was thinking about the seeming lack of rational people (as opposed to buzzword spouting idiots like Renee James) in Intel's upper management, thus the error. I hope that somehow, someday you can forgive me and my terrible transgression. Perhaps the losses I have taken in my Intel holdings as a result of this bullshit buyout will assuage and mitigate my folly in your minds to some minor extent.
Asustek Feels Pressure From iPad
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703321004575426980121254928.html
TAIPEI—Computer maker Asustek Computer Inc. swung to a second-quarter profit but offered a cautious outlook for the third quarter, as executives warned Apple Inc.'s iPad was hurting demand for its Eee netbook.
Competition from the iPad in addition to uncertainties in Europe, the U.S. and China prompted what Asustek said were conservative forecasts for shipments in the current quarter ending September.
It aims to ship 2.7 million notebook PCs in the current quarter, up 13% from the second quarter, but said shipments of its Eee netbook, a small, low-cost computer, will fall about 7% to 1.4 million units in the third quarter.
Looks like the Netfad is dying.
Give some credit where it's due. Mas is right, this is the result of Intel maxmizing profits instead of trying to kill AMD. Love the blow out results, love that I added to my position under 20 this quarter, love that I was wrong on Atom sales this quarter. All my holdings are popping hard AH (including AMD). Nothing bad to say right now, thank you Intel.
P.S. Do something with that cash. Buy back some shares or buy Nvidia preferably.
How's Enron doing?
Excellent analogy there. Clearly Apple=Enron. Glad you've got that all figured out.
That's the one thing that could tip the scales towards x86... A comprehensive push into smartphones by MS, with a worthy OS and including subsidies.
It's already far too late for that. x86 will not give any serious advantage. Intel will have to compete straight up against ARM in Perf/W.
In other news.
http://www.thestreet.com/_yahoo/story/10785387/1/apple-iphone-4-pre-orders-spell-upside.html?cm_ven=YAHOO&cm_cat=FREE&cm_ite=NA
A spokesman for AT&T(T) confirmed to TheStreet that iPhone 4 pre-order sales were 10-times higher than the first day of pre-ordering for the iPhone 3GS
In addition to unprecedented pre-order sales, yesterday there were more than 13 million visits to AT&T's website where customers can check to see if they are eligible to upgrade to a new phone," he wrote, in an email. "That number is about 3-times higher than the previous record for eligibility upgrade checks in one day
Apple is very much giving off the world domination vibe MS did in the late 80s. I think it's still cheap and has a long way yet to ride.
