Why InterDigital, Inc. Stock Plunged Today
The wireless R&D specialist dropped despite strong quarterly results. Here's what investors need to know.
Steve Symington
(TMFSymington)
Feb 23, 2017 at 7:04PM
What happened
Shares of InterDigital Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC) fell 13.2% on Thursday after the wireless technology company announced solid fourth-quarter 2016 results, but followed with disappointing guidance.
So what
Quarterly revenue grew 144.3% year over year, to $273.9 million, primarily driven by a license agreement signed during the quarter with Apple. As a result of that agreement, the past patent royalties line item totaled $180.3 million for the quarter. Meanwhile, recurring revenue for the quarter was $93.6 million, which was flat from the same year-ago period and comprised of both current patent royalties and current technology solutions revenue. On the bottom line, net income grew 313.6% year over year, to $136.5 million, or $3.85 per diluted share.
Analysts' consensus estimates called for slightly lower adjusted earnings of $3.84 per share, and revenue of just $262.6 million.
Now what
For the current quarter, InterDigital anticipates revenue between $91 million and $96 million, comprised entirely of recurring revenue from per-unit licenses signed in the fourth quarter and new agreements signed over the past year. By comparison, Wall Street was modeling higher first-quarter 2017 revenue of $113.7 million.
InterDigital also noted that guidance doesn't include the potential impact of any new patent license, technology solutions, patent sale agreements, or dispute resolutions that might be signed in the coming quarter. But with InterDigital stock still up nearly 25% since the beginning of November, and given the company's light revenue outlook, it's no surprise to see investors taking some of their profits off the table today

IBD STOCK ANALYSIS
Breakout Watch: Why Are Top Funds Buying This 5G, IoT Tech Stock?
MATTHEW GALGANI2/09/2017
FacebookLinkedInPrintTwitterShare Reprints
While there are no guarantees in the market, one of the keys to successful investing is to focus on stocks that the top mutual fund managers are buying. Mobile and wireless technology leader InterDigital (IDCC) fits that bill.
The Delaware-based company made IBD's latest list of new buys by top-performing funds, with 18 funds investing approximately $12 million from November to January.
InterDigital also sports an A Accumulation/Distribution Rating, 1.9 Up/Down Volume Ratio and two quarters of rising fund ownership.
Triple-Digit Growth
Fund managers are attracted to explosive growth, and InterDigital delivered a 340% rise in earnings and a 107% spike in sales in Q3. Consensus estimates for Q4 call for a 317% EPS gain in Q4 and a 157% rise for all of last year.
Are you getting the most out of IBD? Our Getting Started Guide can help!
The company already sports a three-year annual EPS growth rate of 58%, and is set to report fourth quarter and full year 2016 results before the open on Feb. 23.
While InterDigital's track record is strong and expectations for the next report are high, what happens if the numbers disappoint? That's why it's risky to buy any stock just before it announces results.
5G And IoT
InterDigital says it's "creating the living network" through technology that enables faster and more efficient wireless networks and new mobile broadband capabilities.
Already a leader in Internet of Things (IoT) technologies that expand industrial automation and health care innovations, such as remote patient monitoring, the company is aggressively gearing up for the coming 5G revolution and next-generation networks.
InterDigital says its EdgeHaul millimeter wave mesh backhaul technology is an immediate solution for wireless gigabit connectivity and a platform for future 5G wireless transport.
In December, the company bought sensor processing pioneer Hillcrest Labs, whose technology is found in smart TVs, gaming systems, smartphones, virtual reality systems and other devices.
Mobilizing A Breakout?
InterDigital broke out of a base last August, rising as much as 63% before peaking in December.
Since then, the stock has been working on a second-stage cup with a 98.10 buy point. It may form a handle, which would offer an earlier entry.
InterDigital has shown good support along its 50-day and shorter-term 10-day moving averages, while its Relative Strength line has been floating near new high ground.
On Thursday, the stock slipped slightly, then bounced back to a 1% gain in below-average, but rising trade, once again finding support at its 10-day line.
See if InterDigital can meet or beat the high expectations for its next report and break out in heavy volume.

Nice Article by ZACKS this morning...
Bull of the Day: InterDigital Inc. (IDCC)
Brian Hamilton September 20, 2016
Wireless communications are changing the way we live and how the world communicates on a daily basis. These communication devices are not typically created in one factory, rather many components are made by individual companies and then put together for the final product. With this in mind, we have singled out one such company as the Zacks Bull of the Day, InterDigital Inc. (IDCC). This company has significantly reduced costs, and has just signed a huge royalty deal with Huawei Technologies.
This Zacks Rank # 1 (Strong Buy) develops and markets advanced digital wireless telecommunications systems using proprietary technologies for voice and data communications and has developed an extensive patent portfolio related to those technologies.
Recent Earnings
In early August, the company announced Q2 16 earnings where they beat the Zacks Consensus Earnings estimate for the sixth consecutive quarter, and they met the Zacks Consensus Revenue estimate (IDCC has met or beat the revenue estimate for four consecutive quarters). Specifically, on a year over year basis, net income rose +22.7%, operating expenses declined by -12%, cash flow from operating activities jumped to $191.4 million (ahead of the previous year’s mark of $25.3 million), and free cash flow improved from $17 million to $182.5 million. Lastly, at the end of the second quarter the company held $813.9 million in cash and short-term investments.
Management’s Take
According to President and CEO William J. Merritt, “The company delivered another very solid quarter. While recurring revenue declined from first quarter, that decline was driven by expected seasonality in phone sales and has no impact on our confidence in our ability to drive the annual royalty platform for our core terminal unit licensing business to between $500 and $600 million. We also continued our strong work around expenses this quarter, taking some significant steps to lower our tax burden and drive higher profitability. Lastly, our engineers and scientists continued to drive substantial new innovation at the company, including making numerous contributions into the developing 5G standard. InterDigital was among the leaders in driving 3G and 4G innovation and we are working to drive a similar position for the company in 5G, where the opportunity to innovate is substantial and the technology needs are right in our wheelhouse.”
Price and Estimate Consensus Graph
As you can see in the graph below, both the stock price and future earnings estimates have been rising and are expected to continue to rise into 2017.
Price and Consensus
Increasing Estimates
Due to the company’s cost cutting, recurring royalties, and larger R&D relationships, the earnings estimates for Q3 16, Q4 16, FY 16 and FY 17 have all seen significant upgrades over the past 30 days. Q3 16 rocketed up from $0.40 to $3.06, Q4 16 improved from $0.71 to $0.87, FY 16 leaped up from $3.01 to $5.80, and FY 17 rose from $3.32 to $3.52.
Bottom Line
In the early part of September InterDigital received a $200 million advanced payment by Huawei Technologies Co. (a Chinese multinational networking and telecommunications equipment and services company) as part of the two company’s royalty agreement. Further, the two companies are also working towards a joint R&D relationship.
It is expected that this initial royalty agreement with Huawei will create future opportunities with other manufacturers, and other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Currently, there are three additional companies that are looking to discuss royalty agreements in the second half of 2016 (with the expectation of finalizing the new deals in early 2017).
Lastly, management has a stock repurchase program that repurchased 0.3 million shares in Q2 16, and has repurchased a total of 6.7 million shares since its inception. The company authorized a total of $400 million to repurchase shares and still has $86.3 million remaining in the program.

Interdigital update from The Motley Fool
Dan Caplinger (TMFGalagan) Dec 28, 2015 at 6:02PM
InterDigital rose 4% as the mobile-technology company announced a new licensing agreement with handset-maker Kyocera. The deal covers certain cellular terminal unit products and should put Kyocera in a better position to compete with its mobile peers, and InterDigital executive Lawrence Shay said that the agreement "highlights the strength of InterDigital's research and intellectual Property portfolio." InterDigital also gave an update to its fourth-quarter guidance, predicting sales of between $107 million and $111 million, of which about 85% will come from renewing revenue sources. Although the guidance reflects the Kyocera deal and other licensing agreements signed before the day, InterDigital held out the possibility of future agreements that could boost results further.

InterDigital (IDCC +4.1%) has struck a royalty-bearing licensing deal with Japanese phone OEM Kyocera. Terms are undisclosed. The 3G/4G patent owner now expects Q4 revenue of $107M-$111M, above prior guidance of $89M-$91M and an $88.4M consensus. $92M-$94M of the revenue is expected to be recurring, and $15M-$17M stemming from past sales. The revision is said to reflect both a new patent license deal (presumably the Kyocera deal) and "the collection of outstanding payments from a prior technology solutions customer.

Hello Bulldzr,
Your price prediction came very true right up to eve of morning bell by IDCC management. Almost everyday idcc went on average of 0.60 cents.
Well, what would like to see( your prediction)tomorrow morning after earning and opening bell by IDCC management ?
Any guess ?
Q3 .34 cents beats by .15 cents, Rev 77.6 million beats by 7.41 million.
good luck !!
dndodd,
I appreciate your response that Bill has said repeatedly 100 % of the phones use IDCC patents.
What he is saying, that company allows big boys to use without paying and that is way business works at idcc.
Do you think you can buy I-phone for free without signing contract ? No way.
However, where is the contract ? where is money ? and how much idcc will get, you and me don't know. Even IDCC management do not have clue.
Well ,Wall street HATE unknowns.
That is why IDCC stock price gets hit every time you see unknowns.
I hope I clear to you.
Mickybritt,
The point remains ,stock dropped 17% in spite increase in dividend to 20 cents a share.
The company is unable to renew contract with Apple before contract expires.
The fact remains that Apple is going ahead and sold over 10 million units in 3 days.
The fact remains you , me and all outsider's share holder do not know if Apple is using IDCC patents in I-phone 6.
We do know that IDCC do not have renewal contract yet mean while Apple is making Billions and we share holders yet do not know what is fate for us. Is it going to be like Motorola or Nokia or others as we know.
IDCC got contract after so many years fight in court with samsung after spending millions of dollars and time. Our lawyers dont bring good results and legal expense continue.
Great product alone don't bring revenue and profit, but has to have good management.
Inside selling don't matter here. All these factors play roll and you see yo yo in idcc stock price movements.
Is Apple getting free ride ?
Apple sold new I-phones over 10 million in just one weekend. Apple contract with IDCC expired in July 2014.
What is happening with renewal with Apple ? We, idcc share holders took beating or not participating in Apple sales/ profit due to fixed fee management had with them for last 7 years.
Now Apple is riding for free or using IDCC patents and no agreements unless Apple decided not use them. What a management style.
I am glad chairman is retiring.
Since Apple contract expired in July , we are almost in October yet no new information.
No surprise, stock has lost almost $ 8.00 from $ 48 plus few months ago.
IDCC management should at least keep informed share holders what is happening with Apple renewal ?
Any comments ?
Waiting game again !!
Either Apple is riding free and /or long drawn litigation ?
IDCC board/executives do not have good managment skills it appears for now in case of Apple.
Why they were not able to renew contact with Apple at the time of expiration ? Don't they have an obligation to disclose to share holders what is going on with Apple ?
Any comments ?
What is the status with Apple?
I understand that finally bad flat fee contract after 7 years of suffering by idcc share holders is coming to end sometime this year. However, I do know exact date that patents contract expires with Apple.
Anyone has any idea when contract is up for renewal with Apple?
I hope management has realized big mistake in signing a flat fee contract regardless of wireless devices sold.
I have feeling that share holders are awaiting some news on apple contract. No wonder stock is having heavy resistance at $ 48.
Any comments will be appreciated.
Idcc earning will be out before Thursday market opens.Any opinion ?
What is street expectation ?
What is built in price ?

InterDigital Announces Arbitration Result, Issues Revenue Guidance for Third Quarter 2013
WILMINGTON, Del., Aug. 22, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq:IDCC), a wireless research and development company, today announced that it expects its total third quarter 2013 revenue to be between $55 million and $56 million. The revenue guidance for third quarter 2013 includes $43 million to $44 million of current revenue, as well as approximately $12 million of past sales revenue, primarily relating to past sales by Pegatron of certain products between July 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013, the royalties for which were covered by an arbitration award announced at the end of April.
The company further announced that it had received an award in an arbitration involving royalties due under one of its technology solutions agreements. The panel determined that InterDigital was entitled to the royalties sought by the company under the arbitration at the rates specified in the technology license agreement. The licensee under the agreement had paid the disputed amounts under protest and, as of June 30, 2013, the total deferred revenue balance was approximately $52.6 million as reported in the company's quarterly report on Form 10-Q for the period ended June 30, 2013. The company is reviewing the award and working through the related revenue recognition with its independent auditors.
The revenue guidance includes recognition of revenue for royalty reports received to date, but does not include the potential impact of any new patent license, technology solutions or patent sale agreements that may be signed, or any amounts related to the most recent arbitration decision discussed above or to any other arbitration or dispute resolutions that may occur, during the balance of third quarter 2013.

Is this fair reporting for IDCC by Reuters on 06/28/13 ?
On Friday 06/28 after preliminary decesion by ITC judge , Reuters reported in news story which states "InterDigital, which buys and licenses patents, had accused the companies of violating seven patents used to make 3G wireless devices. The patents cover conservation of power and ensuring the right data goes to the right recipient, among other technology."
My belief is that all these patents are invented by Interdigital, however, story tells that Interdigital buys and licenses patents. Is this true for these cases ? I thought all patents in this case are invented by Interdigital. None of the six patents are bought by Interdigital. Is this correct ?
Can anyone experts can sharfe light ?

Nokia Said to Reach Deal to Buy Control of Wireless Equipment Joint Venture
By MICHAEL J. DE LA MERCED
Nokia has reached a deal to buy out Siemens’s half of a telecommunications equipment joint venture for about 1.7 billion euros, or $2.2 billion, a person briefed on the matter said on Sunday.
The agreement comes as little surprise. Siemens has indicated that it wanted to divest its stake in the venture to focus on its industrial and energy operations. And an agreement binding Nokia and Siemens together expired in April, freeing both sides to explore potential deals for their holdings.
Siemens reportedly has held discussions with private equity firms about offloading its stake in the venture, Nokia Siemens Networks.
Nokia continues to struggle with challenges to its core cellphone business. Once the reigning handset maker, it has fought to hold onto market share in the face of competition from Apple’s iPhone and a tide of phones from Samsung and others that run on Google’s Android operating system.
Nokia Siemens, on the other hand, has slowly improved its business. A campaign to cut expenses and focus on next-generation wireless data technology has paid off, as the venture reported a pro forma operating profit of 822 million euros last year, up 145 percent from the previous year. It ended the year with about 1.3 billion euros in net cash.
Nokia Siemens now claims about 20 percent of the market for the latest generation of wireless data networks, commonly known as Long Term Evolution, or LTE.
Nokia is expected to finance the deal with a bridge loan, this person added. It had about 10 billion euros’ worth of cash on its balance sheet as of March 31.
