Product Research
I am developing a trading system that I plan to launch commercially late in 2015. I want to do some market research. Can I create a board to explain the system and get feedback from interested participants? I don't want to violate any of the TOS, but I did not see anything about doing market research.
Thanks
Hey Clive,
Thanks for the response. That was very enlightening. I was wondering what you were using for the timing? Is that the VWave?
Thanks again,

Hello glennpj,
Thanks for the ACCLAIM program, it looks interesting. I was wondering if you have done any backtest analysis on the ACCLAIM variant vs. standard AIM, or any other AIM variant? If so I would be grateful if you would post your results. I assume you have some kind of comparison, otherwise why go to all the trouble of coding a program, for two OS's no less!
Thank you again, and kudos to you.

Hello,
Here's another wrinkle on the Paytrading method. Use pairs to trade.
Maybe a stock that moves quickly vs an ETF like FCX vs XLB. Purchase a specific dollar amount of the stock and short an equal dollar amount of the ETF.
Advantage: More volatile movement with a relatively neutral position as the two equities offset each other.
Disadvantage: Double commissions, sector may get blasted for an extended period.
Just a thought,

Any Updates on Aim II (The Advantage)?
Hello AIMers,
I have been catching up on some older posts and was intrigued by macprogrammer's AIM II. I downloaded the beta demo and it looked really nice, although I'm not sure I understand the logic of the mechanics.
If someone could give me a brief overview of the logic and any information about the current status of the AIM II that would be swell.
Thanks,
banjanxed
AIMster,
I just read about the Paytrading experiment with 3x ETF's. Very interesting. Here's my twist on dealing with the constraint of never taking a loss on a trade. AIM your losers back to profitability.
Assume you have a couple of stubborn ETF's that refuse to rise back to 2% profit. Scrape a little cash away from your two best ETF's and buy some more shares. Maybe raise the profit target to 4% for the hassle, then rinse and repeat as needed.
Just a thought. Keep the updates coming!

Thanks so much
Hey LC,
Thanks for the IncWave info. It looks pretty interesting, is there any chance of getting a copy of your spreadsheet? banjanxed@yahoo.com Thanks,

Hey LC,
Thanks for the detailed explanation. It's all coming back to me now....

Hello Lost Cowboy
I just downloaded the new Synchrovest spreadsheet and I was wondering about the new features. I am familiar with Synchrovest to a degree, but I was wondering if you could please define and suggest typical ranges for the following spreadsheet headers: Planned Investment Divider, Second Stage Trigger, Gain Factor. I know what a 200 day moving average is, but I'm not sure why it is included. Thanks so much.
banjanxed
Hey Grabber,
Maybe you should look into the Synchrovest method, it relies on the average cost of shares as the basis for determining trade amount. It may be adaptable to a useable AIM variant with more symmetry. You should check out Lost Cowboys Systematic Investing thread http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=966, he has some spreadsheets for download. Just a thought.

Hello Undertakr,
I just downloaded this program to deal with spam, and it is excellent! http://www.mailwasher.net/index.php Give it a go, and it's a freebie! Sweet.

Hey rambis9999 and Myst,
I think I've got it going now, thanks for the help. Maybe this will help with the date thing: http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=634499 Good luck.

The Grabber,
I'm always looking for a new twist on the AIM concept. Thanks for extending your kind offer of a spreadsheet. Please send to banjanxed@yahoo.com

Hello Myst,
I get the same error message as rambis9999. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hey karw,
I like this idea, it seems to have some downside protection from the dreaded deep diver. Have you done any experimentation? Keep the ideas coming!

Hello Whitelake,
Worked like a charm, thanks for your help.

Hey Myst,
I've got one for you. X_DEV seems to be chopping off about a months worth of data on the oldest side. I uninstalled, and reinstalled both X_DEV and SP-1 and the data is still missing. Got any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.
banjanxed
Hello Myst,
I know you are hard at work on X_DEV 3.0 and hope to have a fall release. Do you have a feature set that you can post? Are there any changes to the basic X_DEV algorithm? Is there going to be any automation of the configuration process (where most people seem to have difficulty)? Very curious,
banjanxed
Hello Mark,
I'm curious as to the future integration of some of the newer AIM variants into AI. The MattMod and Don's MACRO look very promising. Or are you working on a little something all your own? Getting antsy,
banjanxed
Hello Don,
Outstanding comparison and contrast on various AIM flavors. I always enjoy reading your posts, keep up the good work!

Hello Jack,
Yes, I still use X_DEV, but in a modified way based on my situation. As with all AIM systems, stock selection is key. I began trading a stock using X_DEV that has dropped more than 50% in price since my entry. The price drop was due to a merger approval, and the price has now become stable at a much lower trading range. X_DEV tends to buy early and heavily on price declines, and sells early and heavily on advances. I followed the program's advice, unaware of the merger situation. I was 100% invested and there was still a sizable decline before I realized the situation (the entire market was diving, so I didn't suspect specific adverse news). Once I realized the situation, I added 30% more funds to my account so I could buy cheaper. As far as X_DEV was concerned, I was 100% invested, so it didn't give me any buy quantity amounts, but it did recommend buy prices. I did a large buy at a lower price, but again X_DEV thinks I am already 100% invested, so it can't factor in my buy. I reconfigured the program for the new trading range, but I now use X_DEV as a check for the current trading range, and I have put in two GTC orders to reflect the new trend. My simple return to this point is -35%.
I think X_DEV is a fantastic program, I will continue to use it as a tool in day to day investment decisions. X_DEV is very flexible, you can set it up to trade in a manner that suits your philosophy. But the ultimate decision to trade is yours alone, so proceed with that in mind.

Hello Dinsdale,
I have used both the Stock Market Wizard 2002 and the X_DEV programs, here is a brief synopsis.
The Stock Market Wizard program (Market Wizard 2002) has just gone through a major upgrade in terms of usability. It is a basic AIM based portfolio management program that is fairly simple to use once you adapt to the interface. MW2002 suffers from the lack of advanced settings for veteran AIM users, although some parameters, such as starting cash to stock ratio, can be manually changed. Its strengths are its ease of use and portfolio management, its weaknesses are its quirky interface (easily learned) and its lack of advanced user settings. Good for the newcomer to AIM or the person who likes to set it and forget it.
X_DEV is different bird altogether. X_DEV has common roots with AIM, but is more revved up than BTB AIM. Version 2.x does not have any portfolio management tools, so you have to track your trades separately. X_DEV uses a sophisticated algorithm to let the user look at historical data of a stock, configure the program based on the historical data (and the user's desire to trade), and makes daily recommendations based on the settings that the user defines. The program also requires the user to periodically readjust settings based on changing trends. The initial settings are easy, but you must use your judgement on each specific trade and when to readjust your settings. A technical analysis background is helpful. X_DEV tends to be more fully invested more often then BTB AIM, and as a result has better returns. X_DEVs strengths are its ability to outperform BTB AIM and its ease of setup. Its weaknesses are its lack of portfolio management features (coming in version 3.0) and its need for constant attention and periodic readjustment (user judgement). This program is for the intermediate to advanced AIM user who likes the daily action.
These two programs are both ends of the spectrum as far as AIM programs are concerned. One that falls in the middle is Automatic Investor. A solid, robust, configurable AIM program.
I hope this helps. I guess it depends on what kind of investor you are as to which program you use.

Hey rrochon,
You might try upgrading your Java jre to 1.4.1 at http://java.sun.com It seems a bit quicker to me. IB has two ways to access their trading software. Through your browser (go to the website an login there) or a stand alone java based program. The java upgrade will help with the latter. If you upgrade the java plugin in your browser, that may be a solution as well. Good luck,
banjanxed
Hey LC,
Was that the one? Thanks for your response on my dry IRA AIM account. Looks like I'm gonna ride it out, at least for now...

Hello RoboAIMer,
Preliminary results look promising, but I haven't had a chance to give it a full scale backtest. I need to modify my spreadsheet first, and you know how fun that can be. I'll let you know,
banjanxed
Hello Myst
Here's an idea I had for an X_DEV tweak, but I haven't had a chance to test it yet, so it may be bunk. Here's the concept: a mechanical "ratcheting" of the buy/sell multiple value based on consecutive buys or sells.
I've noticed that X_DEV tends to have consecutive buys and sells triggered once optimized, what if we took advantage of its nature and accelerated the multiple value so we buy more as the price declines and sell more as the price rises?
For example, let's assume the the buy and sell multiples are default at 1 when we start our X_DEV journey. We get our initial buy signal so we sink 66% of our total cash into this particular stock. Once a buy has been triggered, the buy multiple goes to 2. A price drop happens and we are advised to buy again, but this time more shares at a cheaper price. The buy multiple goes to 3 and waits for another buy signal. And so forth. Once the buy signal switches to sell, the multiple reverts to 1 and the process starts on the sell side all over again.
This idea appeals to my mechanical nature and adjusts itself without subjective tweaking. As I said I haven't tested this at all, so it may be a waste of time, but it makes sense to me logically. Let me know what you think. By the way, I think the program is great. Take care,
banjanxed
Hello All,
I've been Aiming an IRA which has been decimated by the bubble bursting. I have no cash left, and I stopped my contributions to this particular IRA. Does anyone have any strategies for dealing with a wrung out Aim account? Should I just stay put and *hope* for a recovery?
It seems that switching stocks might be an idea, but it could make matters worse as well. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks,
banjanxed
Hey Aptus
Just want to let you know that AI 2.0 rocks. It has a much more solid feel to it. You certainly have made this a program that I can recommend without hesitation. Thanks for your effort and timely support.

Hey Rein,
I am a Mac guy as well as a PC user. I have a 8500 with a G3 card in it, hence no OSX. I plan on getting another Mac when (if ever) the G5 processor hits. I will probably alternate systems, Mac, PC, Mac until the internet is the OS. Fight the good fight,

Hey Myst
Hit me too. Also: I love deadlines, they make the coolest sound as they fly by....
banjanxed
Hey Jibes,
I saw your post, and web site. Very interesting. Do you have a spreadsheet available to experiment with, or is this a totally manual (pen & paper) exercise? Cool concept, though. Good luck and keep on aiming!
banjanxed
Hey NCA,
Does your program have any portfolio management features? You know, adding cash, subtracting cash, stock splits that kind of stuff? Is the number in sample the number of lookback days for a particular stock? And I'm not sure what the generations amount represents, but the program looks awesome. Keep up the good work.
banjanxed
Hello Myst,
That program looks sweet! Can't wait to give it a spin.
banjanxed
Hello Myst,
Yes, very helpful. I was able to reproduce your results exactly. Thanks.

Hello Myst,
I have a couple of questions regarding the current X_DEV spreadsheet. I'm trying to figure out how to utilize it for actual trading. I understand that I need to copy the formulas down to a new row, but I am unclear on how to determine the limit order amounts to place with my broker. It seems I need to enter values in columns S,T and U (close, high, and low) to get a signals. Should the close price be the midpoint between the high and low? When I change the close, it changes the buy/sell values. Could you tell me what buy and sell amounts you get for your next order on qlgc, that way I can check against what I got (buy 47 shares @ $38, sell 57 shares @ $56). Round numbers are fine.
Also, I assume GTC orders are not a good idea to use with this system because the moving averages change every day based on the high/low close data. Do you use day limit orders? Thanks for your help.
banjanxed
Hey Myst,
Your solution seems like a thoughtful, balanced approach. Kudos.

Hey NorCalAimer,

Hey Myst,
I have no problem at all with buying your program. I'm looking forward to the chance to give it a try. Also I'm thankful for your willingness to share the concept and accept suggestions on improvement. It seems everyone will benefit from the open process by your turning out a better product that they can purchase and utilize. Keep it up.
