Pictured is the first Tarpon ever caught by Chris Holmes of Chalmette, Louisiana. The fish was caught in May 2003 while on vacation in the Florida Keys (Cudjoe Key). Chris caught the Tarpon drifting a small live blue crab on a Penn 850 SS reel and a Penn Slammer spinning rod. The fish was estimated at 100# and was released in good condition following the photo. What a great vacation. Said Chris, "thanks Penn for the top quality equipment that helped me land this great fish."

Captain John Rocchetta and mate Lou Haines of “Tsunami Charters” skippered the vessel “Wicked” and her crew Mike Pazienza, Dave Kiley and Brian Nadeau in the Great Gun Anglers Shark Tournament.
After releasing five blue sharks, seeing a 15-foot Great White Shark and a Finback Whale the day seemed magical. About 12:10 pm we decided to try a new rod with a new Penn International 50TW. The mackerel bait was set at about 15-feet off the starboard side when after 1 minute the clicker lit up. I (Captain John) set the hook and watched the angle of the line become shallow until a cobalt blue beast broke the horizon with a breath taking aerial display. The crew, never seeing a Mako, filled the silent air with screams of excitement. The rod was fastened to Mike’s gin belt for the epic battle. Three strong runs at 20-pounds of drag and a third jump reminded me of exactly what I was dealing with. An hour and a half after the hookup Lou manned the gaff while I slowly leadered the shark toward the boat. A perfect gill shot caused the great fish to explode in furry. Dave and I went for the tail while Lou and Brian held onto the flying gaff rope. Several minutes later, screams of joy turned to thankful prayer as I took a heading north towards the beaches of Long Island.
The Mako measured 9-feet and tipped the scale at 518-pounds. As many people have already told me, this is a fish of a lifetime!
