I have a friend who works for Warner Chappell and his job is to compile and audit the royalty streams for a large number of music artists and composers, and the process is very, very strict and records intensive.

For films this is even more intensive, because not only do the content owners get royalties, but they are liable to the performers and others for flow-through royalties even if they are not collected, so the content owners are ridiculously strict about how viewings are recorded and audited. The content owners owe a legal duty to the flow-down royalty recipients to make sure every nickel is collected. And the content owners are on the hook to pay them if they are not properly collected and accounted for.

No big mystery here. Shorting against the box happens all the time in the crooked penny stocks. Using forged 144 letters to delegend restricted shares is not so common, because it is stupid - which is why Mosky did it - he's STUPID.
