Hi gang, Brent here. I’m going to throw out some speculation and tidbits I have heard about Woman Key. These are not my theories, but rather those of Truman and others in the industry. I know some will think this is all bunk; others will find it interesting but not give it much weight; and others may see it as I do, as a new perspective that is worthy of consideration as the evidence in support of the view grows. I will be the first to admit that I really know very little. I am just relaying information that has been shared with me.
You see, Kirby was searching for the Atocha, and believed he was on the scatter trail when he got the Kirby site permit. When Fisher found the Atocha, Kirby thought his site must be one of the other 1622 wrecks. Fisher also searched for years for the Atocha, lost his son, and you all know the story.
There is no doubt that Fisher found and brought up Atocha treasure, but was it really the Atocha? Some, who I greatly respect, have done extensive research which leads to a different conclusion. This theory may soon be confirmed by DPBM and others. It is suggested by some who have studied the subject that the wreck Fisher found was not the Atocha, but rather a salvage vessel that was in the process of recovering the Atocha treasure. A storm came upon that vessel and sent it to Davy Jones where Fisher found it. The serial numbers on the bars matched, so it was assumed to be the Atocha. But is there definitive proof that the wreck with the Atocha treasure was indeed the Atocha ship?
I know it has been suggested here before that the Kirby site might be the stern castle of the Atocha, and that Wilf put an end to that speculation by saying the sites were too far apart. But that assumes that the Fisher recovery site was the Atocha and not a salvage vessel. Could it be that the Atocha hit the reef, broke apart, and sunk near Woman Key? The portions of the wreck above the water were perhaps fired, and the salvage crews did their work. It is very possible that the anchors found at Woman Key are from the Atocha. The keel pins and other bits of evidence from the site could also be from that ship (obviously not the coin). The evidence suggests that more than one vessel of that era met its fate near Woman Key.
If this theory is correct, it would explain a lot. Perhaps the Torredo crust is from remnants of the hull of the Atocha, as Kirby suspected. The treasure from it was recovered by skin divers centuries ago, but there is another huge treasure dump that the skin divers missed, or hadn’t gotten to by the time the second storm hit. This is the location where the technology people (brought to Deep Blue by Truman’s insistence, but dismissed by some as frauds) pinpointed tons of non-ferrous metal. I have good reason to firmly believe this new technology is extremely accurate. What other ship would the treasure be from, if not the Atocha? Fisher did not get all of Atocha’s treasure.
The loot at Woman Key is located under reef or in the turtle grass (two spots I think), and thus off limits for now. But Wilf is now getting sub-bottom profiles of the areas pinpointed by the technology folks, which will strengthen DPBM’s position when requesting permission to dig into these locations. If other evidence can suggest that DPBM is on top of the remnants of the Atocha, there will be enough public and political pressure to force the Marine Sanctuary to permit excavation and recovery.
A portion of the Atocha may have slipped off into deeper water just outside the permitted area. Is this what Wilf is investigating with the new divers? Or is there another wreck near Woman Key, which carried the Ming Dynasty china that is rumored to be there? I am suggesting that if such china is found near Woman Key, it may be from the Atocha, and further evidence that the Fisher recovery was from a salvage vessel and not the Atocha. I have heard the Fisher Group is very interested in what is going on with Deep Blue and Woman Key, I suspect because they know the site contains evidence from the 1622 wrecks. Do they know or suspect that they never found the Atocha, only its treasure? They could be a helping hand in getting to the bottom of this, or a hindrance and legal battle in the making if there is a significant find.
Does any one know if the Atocha’s bell was found, at the Fisher site? I think I remember reading that the Fisher’s never recovered it. What if DPBM found it just outside of the permitted area in deeper water with the china? Can you imagine the publicity and interest in DPBM if Wilf brought up the Atocha bell from Woman Key, proving the Fisher’s never found the Atocha, rather just a portion of the treasure, proving that Kirby was right, not Fisher?
I anticipate inconclusive results from the sub-bottom profile that Wilf is undertaking, but if there is a big blob of foreign dense material where the technology folks pinpointed the treasure, and if the evidence is strong enough for Wilf to get permission to dig, I am certain that we will all be richly rewarded. I am convinced, as are others associated with the technology people, that there is treasure at Woman Key inside the permitted area. By the way, the technology and folks associated with it must remain anonymous.
It is fun to speculate, especially when it fits well with the body of evidence and refutes the accepted theory. I would be interested in hearing an opposing view from someone who knows more about the historical record of the Atocha (not just Fisher’s story). Anyone interested in hearing more, or interested in how the technology is being used at other sites for profit, can contact me at BHambleton@eraualumni.org .
No problem..I would think the pictures would be on there as soon as they get a chance.. Since I have just gotten into this, im not sure but I thought I read a blog on their website that these two sites are considered one..also that we are awaiting another site to be named. Is that true??
I guess we will see, if they find something and bring it up with any value, I would bet the PPS will go up...
Just have to wait and see!!
Looking for another PR this week about some of the artifacts, and then next week, they will be bringing them up...
One good find would bring interest!!
