Interesting insight.
Snow
wbmw,
I think you hit the nail on the head. Watson is phishing for information. He hopes he will piss off the 'right' ego and get proprietary information.
Snow
From the article:
nine copper and one aluminum metal levels
That means AMD's upto 10 metal layers for 65nm. Is that more than their 90nm?
Snow
I'm just wondering when AMD will start addressing the power consumption of their new graphics cards they inherited from ATI. Now there's a power monger. My crossfire set up required a HE 550 watt PSU.... ouch!
Snow
Rink,
Two things I noticed about that slide:
1. The Quad performance was an estimate
2. It appeared to be a slide generated by AMD
Draw your own conclusions
Snow
Kate,
I think you're right. While getting my haircut yesterday, the stylist received her new Dell system via UPS. The box had a big AMD label on the side. She bought it because it was cheap.
Snow
Windsock,
The HE 550W is great, I have one myself. Nice modular cables and plenty of power.
Snow
Nice. I can remember when it was $.02
Snow
RGood,
I believe the Quad Core announcement is part of the reason but they're are also larger macro economic factors that pushed the whole market up.

Snow
What, you mean they're not going to wait for a "True Quad Core" from AMD? ;)
Snow
Sold 518 shares at $20.76. Originally bought at $16.86 at the end of Aug, return = 23% in only three months. Next target sales price is $23, hopefully by end of December.
Snow
wbmw,
The only potential flaw I see in your point of view is that you assume that it will take Intel as much effort to gain momentum with NGMA as it took AMD with K7 and K8. I think this is a shaky assumption because AMD had to prove themselves, Intel has to rebuild credibility but they're not starting from ground zero. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Intel did gain ~ 3% MSS back from AMD in Q3 and that was with limited NGMA volumes.
Also, yes, Dell is a big factor but Dell is still an Intel customer and Intel has opportunities with Apple and the channel and that doesn't include all the gaming PC companies that offer the best performance (Alienware, Voodoo, Falcon NW, etc).
Snow
You are correct.
Snow
BTW, I bought the game F.E.A.R. this weekend. I can run it on my new C2D system with all eye candy dialed to maximum at
1280 by 1024 resolution and its smooth as silk. The rendering
effects are jaw-droppingly impressive. :-O
I did the same with Oblivion on my new C2D system and it is amazing. Of course, having two graphics cards help too. :)
Snow
But you're forgetting AMD's 4X4 or is it a 2X2? Don't you love the irony? :) Now if the market really wanted a True 4X4 they would get a two socket quad core Intel based system.
Snow
Maybe he knows something.......
If he knows something "material" then the SEC places restrictions on him so there's no insider trading. He's probably just opptimistic about his company like I am about Intel. Too bad I don't have the money he does ;)
Snow
Grr,
But you're forgetting that we're comparing a quad core processor with a dual core processor. Even the charts you posted show Kentsfield consuming nominally more than FX 62. Now throw in price/performance metrics and the FX62 looks bad.
By the way, would you buy an FX 62 today? Why or why not?
Snow
Grr,
What are the first two graphs measuring?
Snow
Can you imagine the yields on a cpu that has an integrated memory controller and a gpu? That's going to be a tough technology for AMD to pull off.
Snow
The unit existed before AMD and ATI announced the merger. The design teams are already at work.

Intel Gains Market Share
http://www.marketwatch.com/News/Story/Story.aspx?guid=%7BE891A38B%2DF1EF%2D4C6E%2D8DD2%2DAB3CEB74758...
We know they would :)
Snow
Smooth,
Good point, I hadn't thought about that. On that note, it's possible that Dell selling AMD will simply canabalize sales at other OEM's too. I know it wishful thinking but it's possible.
Snow
Andy,
You and AMD better get used to your wet dreams, they're as close as your going to get to the real thing for the next 18 months.
Snow
Agreed. Intel's increase in server revenues in Q3 should give the droids something to think about before painting such a rosey picture because server sales are the key to AMD's margins.
Snow
wbmw,
I'm using the Intel Desktop Control center that came with the Intel 975XBX mobo. The control center allows you to increase the FSB in 1% increments. I can increase my E6700 FSB by 10% comfortably which puts me at 2.935. I could probably go further but I'm too new to overclocking and don't want to take anymore risks.
Snow
Chipguy,
No need to wait. I would still get an E6700 and overclock it. They're very easy to overclock and remain stable. FYI - I love my E6700.
Snow
I'm back, but only for a minute or two. I'm really enjoying my sabbatical and thought I would let everyone know I'm loving the new computer I built. Here's the final specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6700
MOBO: Intel 975XBX
GPU: 1 CrossFire 1900XT & 1 Standard 1900XT
HD: 2 Western Digital 160GB (RAID 1)
RAM: 2GB of 667 DDR2
Case: Raidmax X1
Fans: 3 Antecs with red LEDs
DVD/R/RW: Liteon
PS: Neo 550W HE
This really rocks! And yes, I'm writing this post from my new system. I was very fortunate that the system posted the very first time I powered it up. Of course I had some struggles with loading the drivers and getting Crossfire to work, but everything is great now. Been playing WOW about 8 hours a day for the past four days and no issues. Anyway, can't wait until the Oct 17 earnings announcements. I hope there's a run up in the next week.
Later!
Snow
If I were an AMD Fanatic, I would get the 5000+ and save myself lots of $$ off the 5200 and FX62. BUT, I'm not, I got a E6700 :)
Snow
Alan,
Add to that, some of the 10.5K are in low cost geos not in the US.
Snow
You are correct.
Snow
wbmw,
FYI - I ordered my E6700 last week and it already shipped. I should have it by Friday.
Snow
fastpath,
The media have totally screwed up the reporting on this one. The majority of cuts will be made this year with some smaller cuts in 2007. This has been in the works for almost a quarter now.
Snow
avatar,
If INTC continues to execute well then AMD employees may have something to worry about next year, but I won't be gloating about it. Unlike you and DARBES, I don't take pleasure in people loosing their jobs. By the way, what would you do if your boss told you 'your going to loose your job and have a month to find a new one?' Think about it, internalize it, and show some respect.
Snow
plyngso,
Dell is in a state of panic, expect them to continue to be reactionary and make 'strange' decisions. It has nothing to do with AMD.
Snow
Maybe that's why Cell is so late to the market, IBM has dedicated their entire manufacturing capacity to build one super computer. Joke
Snow
sgold,
It won't take a year. The headcount reductions have been in the works for over three months and most of the impacted employees have been identified and notified. The majority of impacted employees will be gone before the end of the year. The press is acting like this was an over-night decision, it wasn't.
Snow
Many Intel employees were shaking there head about that one too. I can't believe 20K employees were hired in one year, it totally eliminated all the h/c managment efforts pre-2005.
Snow
Andy,
What do you base your "analysis" and opinion on? Intel decided on a 9:1 reporting structure through industry benchmarking, which included AMD. If you ask your fellow droids that work for AMD I'm sure you will find they have similar reporting ratios there.
Snow
All,
I'm new to this board so I don't know if anyone has posted a link to a reference site for DIY systems. I've bought all the components and I'm going to start assemblying the system next week. Do any of you have a favorite web site you recommend? For example, are there web sites out there that address common issues/roadblocks I need to be aware of before I start? By the way, here's my system config:
CPU: Intel Core 2 E6700
MOBO: Intel 975XBX
GPUs: Radeon X1900 Cross Fire Edition, Radeon X1900 XT
PSU: Neo 550W
RAM: 2GB DDR2 667
HDD: 2 WD Caviar SE 160GB 8MG Cache (Raid 1 config)
ODD: Lite-on 16X DVD/R/RW
Case: Raidmax X1
Thanks,
Snow
Joey,
It's actually a little more complicated than that. Intel, and all other companies, must balance the needs of their customers, shareholders, and employees. It's an integrated triangle that needs continuous focus. Manage one poorly and the others begin to feel the affect.
