Yes, thank you, it did, but that XP machine was getting very long in the tooth with so many other problems, I decided to retire it for now. In its place, I hooked up a Win10 laptop I have (and never use) to a docking station, and still getting everything set up the way I like it. Many programs I use daily I had not updated in ages, and now I'm using the new versions which are different and sometimes I can't immediately figure out how to do what I want to. But slowly but surely the fog is clearing, LOL.
Newly
Yes, Bruce introduced me to building as well and I thoroughly enjoyed it and his thread. I'd love to build again, but quite frankly, it is easier using a laptop with a docking station and anyway without Bruce's help I wouldn't know how to start.
I remember when I finished putting my terminator together and was ready to push the "On" button for the first time, I hesitated, afraid it was going to just blow up or catch fire or something. Finally mustered up the nerve, pushed the button, and my Terminator, Linus, was up and running. Served me very well over the years due to Bruce's excellent design, and just yesterday I retired it and boxed it up for now. I am moving soon, so I will reconnect it after I get settled in because there are programs on it I use regularly that cannot be run in Win10 and I'm not willing to dump them and lose years and years of data.
Bruce was a great resource for all of us who love computers. I remember him fondly. . .
Newly
I miss him, too. I think of him often. Today I finally retired my old Terminator I built to his specs so many years ago now, and I thought again about him and all that happened.
They say you are never really gone as long as one person remembers you, and I believe Bruce had a lot of virtual friends here on iHub who will be remembering him for a long time to come.
R.I.P., Bruce, you did not die, you merely sleep. . .
Newly
I've been thinking a lot about Bruce lately, remembering how he helped me build my Terminator. I can't help but think how special it was for him to have met and married Karen so shortly before his time of trial which meant he did not have to go through it all alone. I'm sure it was very hard on Karen but I hope she also realizes how much having her with him must have meant to Bruce during his final months. We should all have someone who loves us by our side during our final moments to help ease our passing into the next life. I'm happy to think Bruce had that -- it is a blessing we all deserve. . .
Newly
Tnx, Kitt. Yes, I did set a restore point prior to all this and also backed up my registry (which I do on a regular basis). I am familiar with working directly in DOS (used to be important to know back when I got my first computer in the early '80's) and also ran many of the system tools in Windows. All seems ok now, but we shall see.
Newly
My Avast hasn't been able to update the virus database since 6/15. I have now deleted all antivirus programs and many MANY old files, and installed Panda. Not sure I'll stay with it, but OK for now. Tnx.
Newly
Thanks, Kitt. I'll take a look at those.
Newly
Thanks, BD. Having tried just about everything else, that is the very conclusion I have come to. The most likely suspects to begin with were a virus that got past all my security, or all my security itself is causing the problem. Certainly feels like a conflict of some sort (I've had them in the past with more than one Java on the system so I'm careful about that now).
Decided today is the day to delete all my antivirus programs (although only Avast is supposed to be doing active monitoring) and see what happens. Will also be deleting every other program I don't use that is cluttering up my system. Time to clean house!
Newly
Tnx, I've heard some good things about Panda. Maybe I'll try that. I'm thinking it is Avast that is causing my problems. . .
Newly
Glad to hear that, Larry. I think that is the route I'm going to have to go, too, and see what eventuates. . .
Newly
Yes, I also wondered if something was barring installation, and tried downloading and installing with antivirus and firewall off and didn't help. It sure feels like a conflict of some sort but damned if I can figure it out. I think I will start pruning and see what happens. Don't know what else to try. . .
Thanks for your help.
Newly
OK. Sorry but I ran out of posts yezzer.
Well, it took about 1.5 hours to finish whatever it was doing, and nothing is changed as far as I can tell. Still can't install any new programs or update my antivirus software. So frustrating. . .
I do't know, I tried earlier to get some and the page wouldn't load because it said WP no longer supported. May be some are there some not. . .
I'm out of posts for today, so will continue tomorrow. . .
Can't do a Windows update afterwards, this is XP, no longer supported so no updates available.
JFYI, when I hit Retry the choices came up from the disc; they were 1) Install XP, 2) learn setup processes, 3) Install Windows components, 4) Perform additional tasks (this tempted me, LOL), 5) Check system components. I closed it, shutdown, and started over. This time when I inserted the WinXP disc I didn't hit Retry or anything else, and the list of choices did't come up. The box saying it was verifying that all files were intact continued loading. Looks to me like it is checking my HD files against what's on the WinXP disc, but not sure. It's sure taking a very long time. Only about 1/3 done now. . .
BTW, I have SP3 on a CD, too. I did that after my last crash when I realized if they no longer support XP I may not be able to download SP3 again at some future date.
Too late, I went back and tried again and inserted the disc but didn't hit the Retry this time, and it started doing something, not sure what. Seems to be very, VERY slowly checking files against those on the disc, not sure. Taking FOREVER. Will let you know when it's done. . .
Newly
OK, it asked me for the disc which I put in and hit "retry", then a screen came up asking whether I wanted to install WinXP, components, etc. What do I choose? I don't want to reinstall the WinXP OS. . .
Newly
OK, I have that disc. Will run that now. . .
Yup, that's what I saw last time and a few small things fixed, so figured it wasn't giving me the answers I need. Will try the SFC now. What am I looking for there?
Newly
Do I need to do that for all 3 of my drives or just the one holding windows OS?
Newly
Not seeing anything there, either. What am I looking for??? All 3 drives say 0 kb in bad sectors. Nothing else of note.
Newly
How do I access that?
I ran it with the /F, but it scrolled so quickly I couldn't see anything noted as wrong. Ran it on all drives.
Newly
Already tried that -- no change.
Any other ideas?
Newly
Well, this is one of Bruce's designed Terminators that I built back in 2005 I think it was, so I have the original WP Pro on a CD and I also put SP3 on a CD a while ago, but I want to avoid wiping the drive and doing a clean install if I can since I've noticed more and more programs cannot be downloaded now as they are no longer available for WinXP and I don't want to lose the ones I have.
Newly
I'm having a problem with my old XP Pro machine that is driving me nuts.
My Avast antivirus will not update and whenever I try to download and install a program I get a "encountered a problem and needs to close" notice. I haven't installed any new software or hardware lately.
I've run 3 antivirus scans in Safe Mode, nothing. I checked all my drivers are up-to-date, no problems. I've looked in Device Manager, everything working. Plenty of free space on my disks. I've checked Services, everything as it should be. Ran PC Pitstop, nothing unusual. Checked Event Log, nothing weird. Can't find any possible program conflicts. Did a system restore to before the problem started, no change. Tweaked the registry, nothing. Can't remember what else I've done, but can't get a handle on this. Don't know where else to look. Any suggestions?
TIA
Newly
Nevermind. Just began using Chrome browser and apparently it has a buildin NoScript which prevented some functioning until I disabled it. Problem solved!
Newly
Is there something wrong with the search button? Not talking about Advanced Search, just plain vanilla search. Today I can't get it to work at all. Yezzer it was fine. . .
FWIW for anyone else having a problem auto-hiding the taskbar in Win10
Despite being set to "auto-hide" in properties, the taskbar would refuse to budge off the page once my trading platform was active, and only rebooting would correct it, but the same problem would occur as soon as my trading platform was up. Very annoying as it blocked the bottom of the page in all apps running at the same time as my trading platform.
My research indicated this was a well-known problem in Win10 and appears to be caused by Notifications made by certain apps, so I tried everything I could think of plus some, ending by disabling Notifications entirely for everything. No love!
Then I found a simple solution -- press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager, choose "Processes" and scroll down to Windows Processes, then highlight Windows Explorer then click "restart". Didn't take the first time so I closed my trading app, tried again, reopened the app, and now all is well. Hope this helps anyone else having a similar problem and I sure hope it continues to work, but if not, at least I know what to do now, LOL.

Re BREXIT, looks like the powers-that-be are getting nervous. My broker just posted the following announcement to all users -- anyone else getting this type of notification from their broker?
In anticipation of possible market disruptions, extreme volatility and/or unusually large moves in market prices, "broker" will be increasing your margin requirements effective the morning of June 23rd through the close of business June 24th. The following futures related contracts will be impacted:
200% increase to all EUREX products
200% increase to all CME Currency products
300% increase to all VIX futures products
While no one can anticipate the effects to markets in advance of the eventual outcome of this referendum, we believe that a heightened risk awareness is prudent for both our Firm and your trading.
You should review your account and take appropriate measures that you believe necessary to address the possibility of an extreme or unusual market disruption. Please be aware that "broker" will exercise its right to liquidate any customer positions at any time, should your account fall below existing or revised margin requirements.
Thoughts?

I presume you do not have another HD you can try in that enclosure???
BTW, I have the same enclosure (Per Bruce's rec). I'm sure you've already tried this, but did you disconnect from power and USB port, press the eject button and remove the HD, then reinsert to ensure it is properly seated in the enclosure? Just a thought. . .
Newly
A likely excuse. . .
Newly
Uh-oh, TOS violation ("You're a Meanie"). My apologies. . .but anyway, it was the truth.
Newly
Oh, OK, I concede! Hrummmmmpf. 14 years on this site and you deny me the only Grub (i.e. Gurb) I've ever achieved or thought I'd achieved (sniff, sniff). You're a Meanie. . .
Newly
Yes, it was properly called a Grub, but Churak has never learned to spell it correctly -- apparently I'm not the only one here whose brain is mush.
Newly
It was implied because one simply cannot have a bad hair day on body hair alone!
Newly
Yes, grub, that's it. Why doesn't it qualify, I've forgotten the criteria. . . My brain is obviously turning to mush!
Newly
Hey, doesn't that post qualify for the __________ what was it we used to call those numbered posts?
Newly
sorta. . .It ain't over 'til it's over. . .
