Did I just hear Broadwell production later THIS quarter?
Yes, a late Q2 pull-in of Broadwell is a distinct possibility.
Perhaps you could provide some pointer for what you say about TSMC?
I searched for (but could not find) the slide that PO showed that depicted the march toward 10nm for all the top semi manufacturers. As I recall the bottom line was that at 10nm only Intel and Samsung remain profitable enough to cover the capex required to get to that node. Perhaps someone else has also seen and/or has a link to that slide.
..... BK is not known to be a great public speaker
I for one find great oration skills highly overrated when it comes evaluating a good leader. I've sat in many a presentation being dazzled by public speaking and powerpoints when the real leadership occurs behind the scenes where the decisions about where to move the chess piece is actually made. Everyone loves to fond over Steve Jobs and his electrifying presentations and demos but he was an anomaly and not what I look for in a CEO (or a president for that matter but that's off topic).
$16 price target. You gotta love Covello's persistence with this call. Well...no we don't!
I think I will be pushed off the party wagon soon.
If your shares get assigned at 25-26 then you will be in a great position to sell puts after the first downgrade comes in (which it will). Shorting the puts will have you knocking on the door of the party and the downgrade will let you back in!
What exactly does someone need full-blown Windows on a tablet for?
One feature that I have enjoyed with the Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet with full blown Windows has been the ease of joining my Windows HomeGroup network with one-click. Now my libraries of pictures, videos and music are accessible on my tablet for emailing, viewing etc. without transferring or uploading to the cloud. In addition all of the storage on my home network is available to the tablets for automatic backup etc.
There are probably other ways to accomplish this but for a life long Windows user this was a no-brainer and didn't require anything extra to achieve.
I think you mean 'selling puts' in that situation since selling (shorting) calls is a bearish activity. I would be happy to be holding a boat full of short calls in the event of a market meltdown since they would likely expire worthless.
Correct but for a stock that never moves much out of its trading range, income is all you can get.
I have also been selling large blocks of shares this week then shorting some puts (but not for all the shares) with the strategy that if the share price falls to 24-25 in Jan then I'll take some of the shares back at the lower price, if the puts are not assigned then I'll keep the premium and use the stock proceeds to buy the SDY and the XLK. So kind of a controlled way to diversify out of INTC.
Was that from the keynote or elsewhere?
By some strange coincidence, since my kids are grown and out of the house I don't seem to get many viruses anymore, go figure.
I also have McAfee installed on all my client PCs and I have no complaints whatsoever.
Ok I'll bite...what is a Steam Box?
they're not but I think the Professor thinks so.
I think he's talking about the firing of Dadi and his perception that the design teams in Haifa are on the outs.
I've also noticed my venue pro 8 a bit sluggish on web response compared to my iPhone 4S. My wife has no such complaints on her T100 Transformer but I haven't tried hers yet.
Let's not forget I was the first to state 'somebody knows something' :).
We will wait and see if this rumor becomes fact but the recent behavior of the stock leading up to this rumor had the 'feel' of accumulation based on inside information. This from someone who has followed this stock closely since 1983 when I first received these crazy things called ISO stock options.
So that begs the question: does Intel's 64 bit extensions (that are already in place) to their ISA offer the same (or better) features over what the ARM extensions are providing?
Does it matter that it's not important for performance? Or is the perception that 64 bit is more 'advanced' make it important to have it.
While that's true that there has been a strong general uptrend, but INTC has not participated in a lot of these uptrends until now.
The recent (last two weeks or so) climb in INTC stock price has the feel of 'somebody knows something'. By that I mean that wall street insiders think that some kind of catalyst announcement is forth coming in early 2014 that will have a positive affect on the stock price. Perhaps some foundry deal or a major design win for tablets or MS dropping Surface RT in favor of Surface BYT etc.
There just isn't any real reason for the recent run up in the price. In my opinion current fundamentals should put the stock in the 22-24 range. There's just nothing happening (that we know of) that would justify a 24-26 price range.
I suppose if the stock gets hammered back down to 24 over the two weeks or so then I'll conclude that there was no insider knowledge in play here and it's just typical INTC price action at work.
Dell venue 8 pro; you didn't mention a price at Costco. If they are $299 there then I wouldn't expect them to move like hot cakes. I'll check my costco tomorrow morning. The nice thing about being retired is you never go shopping on weekends :)
I guess I'm the only person that thinks a general purpose server CPU is valuable because it IS general purpose.
Trades this morning:
I bought back some short Jan 24 puts and sold some Jan 25 calls and some Jan 26 calls. I also sold some shares (1/20) at 24.70.
I also closed out my small (1/12) short position last week that I was using as a hedge after Stacy's investor day bomb.
I wonder who'll cost more and who'll do the job quicker.
The answer isn't really obvious. Staying with your analogy, if somebody pulled up with a truck full of intelligent strong men that were already trained on the work (full validation) and guaranteed to have workman's compensation insurance (backed by a large, respected manufacturing company) versus your need to go out and recruit some skinny guys with ladders and buckets you may find it cheaper and faster to just use the guys in the truck.
Plus you could further argue that if you change your mind and need to move some furniture later, then you already have the crew for that too!
Broadwell-ULX into a phone-like device.
I've been wondering what BK will be able to present at CES in January. A reference design for a phablet with an ultra low-power Broadwell processor would be something very significant. Especially if you could dock it and have it run in some 'turbo' mode to act like a PC would make it even more compelling.
I'm now personally understanding the phablet use case much better since using my Dell Venue Pro 8. I now carry and keep charged TWO devices around the house instead of just the iPhone. I would like to have the tablet experience for web consumption but also have a phone for messaging and calls etc. and if I could dock it for content creation then 'boom'...I'd pay a ultrabook price for that.
but that's the price you pay for not delivering at his level.
You forgot Bill Sui and Louis Burns
Well he still went to EMC, I didn't say why. And I was there at the time and did not want to see him leave. So it was a loss as far as I was concerned.
Guess Pat Gelsingers odds just went up some.
He was a well respected leader when he was at Intel and it was quite a loss to the company when he went to VMWare. I would love to see him at the helm of Microsoft.
I wonder if this means Microsoft will start designing their own processors :)
Following the GOOG article last, I sat down with my wife and family and we have decided that we too are going to start designing our own processors. Our fab capabilities are limited so we will be using one of the foundries for manufacturing.
To me this kind of article is irresponsible of Bloomberg in that it asserts nothing that isn't obvious. It could have just as easily been written to say that Google is also 'considering' locking in on the long term use of Avoton as their CPU of choice since of course they are always 'considering' all of the above. The article was written to be provocative in nature and to adversely affect the stock price to someone's advantage.
I'm interested in the board's opinion on this comment from the article:
Google is Intel’s fifth largest customer, accounting for about 4.3 percent of its revenue, according to Bloomberg supply chain analysis.
Are they referring to revenue from DCG? Is this accurate? Is DCG's success that closely tied to one company?
No this time it's for real. I just saw in a movie last week that they hired Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson to get this kicked off.
Kidding aside, the pressure is mounting to get out of this stock at around this level. These stories and others like them will continue thru 2014 and with very little 'good' to counter act them the stock will remain range bound for the foreseeable future. There will be plenty of time to buy back in toward the end of 2014 even if buying back in means a $27 entry point.
Intel plummeting after hours after this came out:

Okay so let's talk about new asset allocations amongst some of the technology titans:
Let's say you have some portion of your overall portfolio dedicated to technology and the rest in other non-tech stuff. Then which tech portfolio will perform best over the next 4 years:
100% INTC
100% XLK
25% INTC, 25% AAPL, 25% QCOM, 25% GOOG
100% MAKE YOUR OWN HERE
venue pro 8
I've been playing around with it since yesterday. I don't see what all the fuss is about with Win8, seems fine to me. Takes a little getting used to just like the iPhone did but I'm getting around pretty good after entering in all my userids and passwords for everything.
Reuters.com main page loaded instantly with all the images present. Several random links loaded in 1-2 seconds with no apparent lag.
There have been times when I thought it was hung yesterday but I have noticed my calloused finger tips (guitar player) don't seem to transfer heat that well so I wasn't getting a good 'click' on links. There may be a setting for that somewhere like 'Guitar Player Touch=ON'
MS planning to sell the Dell Venue Pro 8 for $199. Interestingly that MS have realized this is a hot selling product and they are okay with cannibalizing there Surface 2s to allow Win8 to gain a presence in tablets. BTW it appears I got snookered at the $299 price point for this same unit two weeks ago!

Not sure what you are talking about.
I think he's talking about the fact that AMD server parts ARE generally lacking!
Although they're probably lacking due to Intel bribing the OEMs to buy more Intel parts (just wanted to save you a post).
my final note on short covering etc.
One thing to really watch out for in the future is if GS ever changes their call on Intel. If they ever decide that guidance is finally conservative enough (i.e. the bar is finally low enough for Intel to beat in 4 consecutive quarters), then the game will really have changed on how to play this stock. While most analysts calls are somewhat interesting and make for a good read, a change in sentiment by GS will be a game changer. It ain't gonna happen here but watch out for it.
