Francois also said that Haswell would spark an upgrade trend, similar to what Conroe did.
Keep in mind as I stated, I took into account the cost to consumers that Intel was presenting with each tock.
For that reason, I compared the i7 920 to the i7 2600K.
The emphasis on low power design and dedicating silicon to increasing IGP performance in Haswell.
Agree that as an engineering exercise, Haswell is impressive, I just feel sad that the segment of the market I am in, is no longer a priority, and thus not being primarily addressed.
If the future holds significant IPC/single core increases in the next 3 to 4 years then I will be happy enough, otherwise I may end up holding onto my current desktop for what would have previously seemed an unimaginably long time.
However, as someone who is looking to buy their first laptop, on that front, Haswell excites me greatly and I like what I have been hearing about Silvermont(for a possible tablet purchase), so 2 out of 3 ain't bad. ;p
I don't see your point about the i7 920 to i7 2600K comparison, all the Tocks get the process advantage.
The Q6600 was on 65nm
The i7 920 on 45nm
The i7 2600K on 32nm
The i7 4770K on 22nm
As for desktop users looking for "big" performance, for the last 4+ years, we were able to get it for sub $400 and now you are suggesting we have to spend a lot more and get lower single core performance, with better multicore performance.
Not very inspiring.
I don't think that Tock for Tock, Haswell is even close to improving over Sandy Bridge as previous Tocks have done.
In trying to do a comparison here between different tocks, I have tried to compare similar priced processors as best I could, allowing for the limitations of the Anandtech Benchmark Archive Tool.
But here I have compared a Conroe Q6600 to a Nehalem i7 920

A Nehalem i7 920 to a Sandy Bridge i7 2600K

Previous Tocks have seen either a significant IPC boost and/or Frequency boost, but Haswell on the desktop brings a modest IPC boost, with little frequency boost, especially on the overclocking front.
I'm not going to dispute that Intel's focus for Haswell clearly wasn't on the desktop, but neither am I going to deny that desktop users have no reason to feel underwhelmed by Haswell.
Why do you believe Skylake will be a beast?
After Haswell's modest performance gains on the desktop, I have dramatically lowered my expectations of Intel on desktop products.
I really wish they would put a full sized HDMI port on these beasts.
The Win 8 mess makes it an easy decision for me to put off getting a 2nd computer for my place, as it was a discretionary purchase anyway and now I am happy to wait and see what Win 9 brings in probably 2015.
It is crazy that Microsoft didn't have this sort of functionality built into Win 8.
From your link, just in case people missed it, is a Youtube clip demonstrating ModernMix
LOL Neolib and FPG will be besides themselves, there is their much loved BRICK PHONE.
Why can't Intel have two Baytrail SoC's? One where the GPU has 4EU's & one with say 8EU's?
Intel isn't getting outsiders to fab their CPU's, instead they are fabbing products for other companies.
Thus Intel has more than stayed true to the Jerry Sanders maxim and your "Intel eating crow" line, makes no sense whatsoever.
Samsung to use Atom in a version of their Galaxy S4?
This would be a momentous event, and if this happens without Merrifield being out, then surely the sky must be the limit when Merrifield does ship.
Neolib can point you in the direction of a few fashion designers, who will do bigger pockets for you. :p
I'm in the market for an Ultrabook, so I am very keen on seeing reports on the mobile Haswells.
Weren't you expecting a far greater increase in peak core performance?
I know I was.
If Samsung put Baytrail in a 2500 x 1600 tablet for $399, with a HDMI slot, I would definitely buy this device.
Haven't Intel had difficulties translating their 3DMark Graphics performances, into real life games?
It seems that if an Intel GPU score is equal to an AMD or Nvidia GPU score in 3DMark, that when they run all the GPU's on games, Intel ends up going from equal, to way behind, as much as 50 to 60% behind.
Borusa is only here to have fun with you guys. Fun for him anyways. :p
Heh, Nvidia will hold out longer than AMD will hold out.
Who do you see as the leading candidates to acquire Nvidia?
A wife demanding that you get a Mac? That sounds like grounds for divorce to me.
Like most of the AMD fanboys on the forums, he doesn't own AMD stock, just has an AMD based CPU in his system.
Hah Hah Hah, that is great.
Damn, was hoping for Steve Balmer.
The Surface Pro comes with 16 EU's does it not, seeing as the specs refer to HD4000 graphics?
The rumoured number of EU's for Bay Trail is 4, so unless those EU's are dramatically enhanced or the number increased, then will Bay Trail be leading various Apple offerings in GPU related tasks?
Yes, those very same people who think Uni students would be quite happy to type out a PhD thesis on a smartphone screen and virtual keyboard.(That guy also believes that parts is parts. LOL)
Such heretical talk, haven't you read what the "informed folk" at SI say? ;)
Ephud frequently does good deeds on various forums. :)
Hell, he came to the rescue of a moribund AMD forum on another site, by selflessly agreeing to become the Moderator there, when no one else could be bothered, thus keeping that forum alive. ;p
Aeassa has been a fantastic addition to this board.
I love reading his posts and the interactions that develop between him and the good regulars(such as yourself) of IHUB.
I hope I haven't scared away "Thommo". ;p
So you have a quote of anyone claiming that Intel would be supplying Atom SoC's for Apple or Samsung by now?
Of course you don't, so why did you bother to write the below nonsense?
That's certainly the claim. (And last year's claim... And...)
Did Swiss Army Knives lead to a dramatic fall in the sales of scissors, screwdrivers, regular knives, etc?
OTOH there is no doubt that mobile devices are being used to do many things that, prior to the smartphone revolution, were only done on PCs. (Or TVs... Or DVD players... Or game consoles... Or digital cameras... Or dedicated e-readers... Or...)
Apple and Samsung don't currently buy merchant CPU's because Intel was late to the market and they don't yet have overwhelming technical dominance.
Soon enough they will, and that will change everything.
You also need to get over the crazy idea that smartphones are replacing laptops and desktops.
Sure, but in fpg, you are dealing with someone who believes that Parts is Parts, so it is anyone's guess what he thinks matters to Mobile.
So you don't believe that having the best performance, energy efficiency and price/performance will matter to Mobile?
Budget smartphones aren't replacing laptops or desktops, how would Intel's revenues be adversely affected by matching the $5 - $25 chips?
Thanks for all the info you have supplied already. :)
He may well just be short and long these stocks in his mind.
Neolib, welcome to iHub.
It's SonnyListon here. ;p
