FRANKFURT, Aug 21 (Reuters) - German chip maker Infineon <IFXGn.DE> said on Monday it had won a contract from the U.S. government to supply security chips for an electronic passport system.
Infineon said the United States was planning to start issuing the passports to citizens by the end of the year, with about 15 million electronic passports in the first year.
"Infineon will supply chips for several million passports, but not for all 15 million," an Infineon spokeswoman told Reuters.
The company declined to give any further details about the size and value of the contract.
Infineon is the first and currently the only supplier for these kind of security chips contracted by the U.S. government, the company said.
Countries such as Germany, Hong Kong, Norway and Sweden are also using Infineon's security chip for their electronic passport systems.
Infineon said that out of almost 300 million Americans an estimated 67 million held a U.S. passport. In Germany there were about 24 million passports.
Worldwide there are currently about 900 million passports, with an estimated 125 million being issued or exchanged every year, the company said.
The security chip, which stores the passport-holder's name, date of birth, issue date and picture, can be read electronically by a scanner.
At 0906 GMT Infineon shares were down 0.8 percent at 8.74 euros. Germany's top-30 index <.GDAXI> was down 0.55 percent.

Broadcom Corporation Partners with RSA Security to Extend Ubiquitous RSA
SecurID(R) Authentication
Broadcom Joins RSA SecurID Ready for Authenticators Program; RSA SecurID
Technology to be Embedded within New Broadcom(R) BCM5890 Secure Processor
RSA Security
(Nasdaq: RSAS) today announced that Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a
global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, has
joined the RSA SecurID Ready for Authenticators program -- an extension of the
trusted RSA Secured(R) Partner Program. As part of this, Broadcom plans to
license RSA SecurID technology for integration within the new Broadcom(R)
BCM5890 secure processor.
Launched today, Broadcom's BCM5890 is a secure silicon processor with
integrated radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. By embedding RSA
SecurID technology within the BCM5890 secure processor, Broadcom will enable
its customers to leverage native support for one-time passcodes (OTPs).
"Broadcom's customers are continually under pressure to deliver solutions
to the enterprise that solve real IT problems," said Joseph Wallace, Senior
Director for Broadcom's Security Line of Business. "By embedding RSA SecurID
technology into the BCM5890, Broadcom would enable unique and substantially
more effective solutions to businesses trying to protect identities and
information."
Launched in February 2006, the RSA SecurID Ready for Authenticators
program supports RSA Security's effort to foster ubiquitous stronger
authentication. The program enables partners, such as Broadcom, to transform
their own solutions into platforms for stronger authentication by embedding
the RSA SecurID algorithm. By doing so, RSA Security and its partners can
offer enterprises greatly expanded options for delivering stronger
authentication to employees, customers and partners. In addition, these
partnerships can present cost-savings opportunities as enterprises can
leverage a single device (e.g., hardware built around the BCM5890 secure
processor) to support additional capabilities.
"As businesses manage increasingly sophisticated security threats, there
is a growing recognition of the need to strongly protect identities and
information. However, these new threats have completely reshaped the IT
security landscape -- customers understand that one-size-fits-all is not
sufficient, and demand flexible, cost-effective technology options," said John
Worrall, senior vice president of marketing at RSA Security. "In our
partnership with Broadcom, we will work to address this market reality by
offering an integrated solution, which will help enterprises balance
convenience, security and costs when deploying stronger authentication."

ABUJA, June 23 - Nigeria's removal on Friday from a blacklist of countries that do not cooperate in the fight against money laundering should help the country attract greater foreign investment, President Olusegun Obasanjo said.
The Paris-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF) had blacklisted Nigeria, ranked among the world's most corrupt countries, in 2001 because its anti-money laundering laws and enforcement regime were weak.
"With today's delisting by the FATF, Nigeria is now free of encumbrances that have the capacity to stifle the inflow of investment and economic growth," said a statement from Obasanjo's office, adding that the president was "elated".
The FATF groups 33 countries and sets policies designed to help governments tackle the financing of terrorism and dirty money passing through the global financial system.
FATF officials were not immediately available for comment on the removal of Nigeria from the blacklist. The only country now left on it is Myanmar.
Nigeria's exit is the latest tangible result from a programme of free-market reforms that a team of high-profile technocrats have been conducting since 2003 to turn around the collapsed economy of Africa's top oil producer.
Two other recent successes were a debt relief deal in which Nigeria paid back $12 billion to Paris Club creditors in return for a write-off of a further $18 billion, and an unexpectedly favourable BB- credit rating from two leading agencies.
"President Obasanjo said that Nigeria's delisting would, together with the ending of its indebtedness to the Paris Club, the BB- rating of its long-term credit status and other positive economic indices, help to attract greater foreign investment," said the statement from the presidency.
However, Obasanjo's decision on Wednesday to reassign Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the architect of the economic reforms, to foreign affairs has raised fears about the future financial management of Africa's most populous country.
Analysts, perplexed by the unexpected move, say the reforms still have a long way to go before their effects can be felt by Nigeria's 140 million people, most of whom live on less than $1 a day. Okonjo-Iweala has been replaced by her less-known deputy and economists are anxious to see if the reforms will continue.
Nigeria had been campaigning hard to exit the FATF blacklist. In 2003, Obasanjo created an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and in 2004 the National Assembly enacted an anti-money laundering act.
The EFCC has secured numerous convictions against e-mail scammers who engage in so-called advance fee fraud -- a Nigerian specialty -- including a group of fraudsters who stole $242 million from a Brazilian bank.
The EFCC's record on tackling endemic corruption among elected officials, however, is controversial in Nigeria. Critics say it has been politically manipulated as a weapon against opponents of Obasanjo, but the EFCC denies this.

Dell Introduces Sleek Ultraportable Featuring Expanded Security, Connectivity, Durability; Latitude D420 Available with Starting Weight of Three Pounds, Can Offer More Than Seven Hours of Battery Life
ROUND ROCK, Texas--(Business Wire)--June 20, 2006--
Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) today announced the Latitude(TM)
D420, a sleek ultraportable with a starting weight of three pounds(1),
and the potential to deliver more than seven hours of battery life.(2)
With this newest addition, Dell completes a major update of its
Latitude notebook portfolio, incorporating increased security,

businesses worldwide.(3)
The Latitude D420 is significant because its lightweight design
and enhanced features, including embedded broadband and biometric
security, reflect extensive input gathered from customers, according
to Alex Gruzen, senior vice president, Dell Product Group.
"The Latitude D420 combines the sleek travel-friendly form factor
of the Latitude X1 with the compatibility benefits and durability of
the Latitude D410, and initial customer response has been extremely
enthusiastic," Gruzen added.
The Latitude D420 is the lightest Latitude D-family notebook while
being fully compatible with legacy D-family docking options, power
supplies and peripherals. Alternatively, customers can add an optional
MediaBase with choice of optical drive that attaches to the bottom of
the system. Like the Latitude D420, the redesigned MediaBase is
thinner and lighter than the previous generation, and constructed of
durable magnesium alloy.
The Latitude D420 features a 12.1-inch wide-aspect display,
full-sized keyboard and dual pointing capability. Customers can
configure systems with choice of Wi-Fi 802.11g or 802.11a/g, as well

AuthenTec's Newest Biometric Fingerprint Sensor Selected by Lenovo; EntrePad 1610 is world's smallest fingerprint sensor for PCs
MELBOURNE, Fla.--(Business Wire)--June 12, 2006--
AuthenTec today announced that Lenovo has introduced its
first notebook computer featuring the company's new EntrePad 1610 -
the world's smallest fingerprint sensor for PCs. The introduction
marks the third Lenovo notebook that includes an AuthenTec sensor.
Lenovo integrated the EntrePad 1610 into the Lenovo V100, a new
ultraportable widescreen notebook PC. AuthenTec's sensor, combined
with password management software, is part of the Lenovo 3000
notebook's security system -- from initial authentication to web and
application access.
Launched in January 2006, the EntrePad 1610 is based on
AuthenTec's patented TruePrint and TrueMatch technologies, which
provide the highest quality fingerprint imaging and matching --
enabling the company's extremely small sensors to provide higher
accuracy and reliability than much larger competitive sensors.
The EntrePad 1610 also is the first sensor architected to leverage
the breadth of existing industry security platforms - including the
Trusted Computing Group's (TCG) version 1.2 Trusted Platform Module
(TPM) specifications and Microsoft Vista Secure Startup -- and future
platforms such as Intel's LaGrande technology. Leveraging these
platforms provides the most trusted security and helps ensure that the
sensor meets future industry standards.
The EntrePad 1610 replaces the need to remember passwords --
allowing authorized users to easily and quickly access their favorite
computer applications or internet web sites by simply sliding their
finger across the sensor surface. At the same time, the sensor
restricts access to the computer and its files to only those enrolled
- reducing the risk of theft or fraud.
With AuthenTec's EntrePad, the Lenovo notebook computer also helps
protect the user's vital biometric information by storing encrypted
fingerprint pattern data directly on the computer itself, rather than
actual fingerprint images that are sent over the internet or stored on
a central database.
"We are excited that Lenovo, one of the leading notebook computer
manufacturers, is helping to pioneer the use of small, trusted
fingerprint sensors to provide advanced security for their newest PCs.
The EntrePad 1610's small size and extreme security are perfect
additions to notebook, tablet and desktop PCs," said Tom Aebli,
director of PC segment marketing for AuthenTec.
AuthenTec is the recognized volume supplier leader of fingerprint
sensors - shipping nearly two thirds of all sensors sold in the PC,
wireless and access control markets during the past five years. The
company's sensors are used in more than 150 different notebook and
tablet computers, portable hard drives, mice, keyboards, memory keys,
cell phones and other devices.
About AuthenTec
With more than nine million sensors in use worldwide, AuthenTec is
the world leader in fingerprint sensor security, innovation and sales
to the PC, wireless, and access control markets. AuthenTec's
award-winning FingerLoc(R) and EntrePad(R) sensors take full advantage
of The Power of Touch(TM) by utilizing the company's patented
TruePrint(R) technology to deliver the most convenient, reliable and
cost-effective means available for enabling touch-powered features
that extend beyond user authentication. The company's network of
partners, solution providers and customers include: Analog Devices,

Sheldon,
First I could not find a link to this document. But more
specificly, the news release has this quote -
"We believe that FIPS-200 illustrates a critical recognition among
federal security officials that agencies must have robust,
multilayered security solutions that can identify and authenticate all
of its network endpoints -- both users and devices -- in order to
truly protect data, critical infrastructure and intellectual property
from outside attack", and wanted to get the idea on the specifics
on how these authentications should be implemented.
Thank you.

Standard FIPS-200, anyone familiar with this?
Officials at Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:PTEC),
the industry's foremost developer of firmware and endpoint identity
and availability software for PCs and other digital devices, today
praised the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST's)
release of the long-awaited Federal Information Processing Standard
200 (FIPS-200) and its recognition of device authentication as an
important part of an overall network security solution.
The new standard, which requires federal agencies to comply fully
by March 2007, is the second standard developed as part of the Federal
Information Security Management Act (FISMA). It mandates minimum
requirements for 17 security-related focus areas aimed at protecting
the confidentiality, integrity and availability of federal information
systems. In one of these focus areas, "Identification and
Authentication," NIST has incorporated authentication of devices as an
effective security control and one of the "prerequisite(s) to allowing
access to organizational information systems."
Phoenix Technologies Ltd. has been a long-time and vocal advocate
for utilizing device authentication within federal network security
systems. With a growing number of wide-spread users relying on an
array of computing, wireless, Internet-enabled and mobile devices to
access its network, government has become especially vulnerable to
blended attacks that cleverly exploit vulnerabilities in network
endpoints to the detriment of overall information security.
"We believe that FIPS-200 illustrates a critical recognition among
federal security officials that agencies must have robust,
multilayered security solutions that can identify and authenticate all
of its network endpoints -- both users and devices -- in order to
truly protect data, critical infrastructure and intellectual property
from outside attack," said Al Sisto, President and CEO of Phoenix
Technologies Ltd. "In an age when passwords are stolen and digital
certificates spoofed, it's no longer enough to simply authenticate the
user; the device must also be identified and authenticated."
The FIPS-200 announcement is just the latest in a flurry of
developments focusing attention on the need for device authentication
as part of an effective network security strategy. Recent
Congressional recommendations from the House Armed Services Committee
and the House Committee on Homeland Security have helped to encourage
agencies to investigate and utilize device authentication
technologies. In January, the Department of Defense took a major first
step, putting out a Request for Information (RFI) for assistance in
developing, implementing and deploying a PKI encryption system that
can securely authenticate at least 25 million of its Internet-enabled
devices, including notebook computers, telephones and cable and
satellite modems.
Phoenix recently released TrustConnector(TM) 2, a device
authentication solution that works with existing PKI and certificate
deployments to prevent attackers from accessing protected systems --
even if they have obtained/stolen valid user identification tools such
as passwords, identifications and digital signatures. The product can
act as a stand-alone solution or as a platform for PKI encryption
systems and still meet the FIPS-200 standard.
Keren Cummins, Vice President, Public Sector for Phoenix
Technologies Ltd., noted that the company is in a truly distinctive
position to help agencies as they incorporate device authentication
into their network security systems and achieve FIPS-200 compliance.
"Known for our accessibility at the pre-operating system (OS) BIOS
level of most PCs, Phoenix offers government agencies an added level
of security that they can't get at the OS level. We have been
anticipating FIPS-200 and other advances toward device authentication
regulation for some time and have set up an entire D.C. operation in
order to support federal agencies with successful implementation, both
directly and by working through our vendor partners," Cummins said.

By Lucas van Grinsven, European Technology Correspondent
AMSTERDAM, March 20 (Reuters) - French nationalists and free market advocates, whose sniping over cross-border takeovers has grabbed headlines, may now have something they can agree on: protecting freedom of choice on song and video downloads from the Internet.
This could be bad news for Apple Computer Inc. and Microsoft Corp., which have for the most part locked consumers into their own downloading systems with proprietary anti-piracy software.
The French parliament is set to vote early this week on a new law that would allow consumers to legally circumvent existing software that protects copyrighted material.
Analysts say that the French are on to something that the rest of the world has yet to figure out: It needs to set rules for this new market now or risk one or two U.S. companies taking control of online access to music, video and TV.
"Whoever controls access to digital information also controls access to consumers," said Willms Buhse, product and marketing officer at Germany-based CoreMedia, a company that builds digital rights management systems used for copy protection.
"For network operators, DRM (Digital Rights Management) has the potential to become the universal billing system for the Internet," Buhse said.
The law wants different copy protection software programmes to be able to communicate with each other, so that downloads from the Web can be transferred to any device, not just iPods or Walkmans, as long as the number of copies stays within limits set by media publishers.
LOCKING IN USERS
Apple's iTunes store currently dominates online media sales, while Microsoft has successfully sold its Windows Media format to telecoms carriers that are hoping to sell copy-protected music, TV and videos to subscribers.
The possibility of one or two proprietary U.S. standards dominating the market is not just a concern in France, whose leaders have recently been touting "economic patriotism".
It also unnerves any company that has content to sell or distribute, since songs or videos purchased from one store will often not play on systems from another store, locking in users.
For that reason, Swisscom Broadcast <SCMN.VX> has decided for now not to start a mobile TV service, said Klaus Pilz, the head of its mobile TV broadcast project.
"Protection systems must be interoperable," Pilz said. "Shall we invest in such a technology mess? No."
Todd Chanko, an analyst specialising in digital rights management technology at market research group Jupiter in New York, said his surveys of service providers showed that interoperability of copy-protection systems would be key to convince telecoms firms and others to invest in systems that distribute content such as songs and video.
Consumers, for their part, are prepared to pay twice as much for a song that can freely move between different devices, a recent study of the European Union-project Indicare showed.
But this interoperability is not necessarily in the interest of companies such as Apple and Microsoft.
CHEAPER PLAYERS
Apple may sell fewer of its money-spinning iPod music players, for example, if iTunes tracks can play on less expensive players.
Apple provided no comment on this possibility despite repeated requests for it from Apple representatives in the United States, Britain and France.
Microsoft, eager to expand its tiny footprint in the 816 million unit-per-year mobile phone market, is promoting its Windows Media software to get telecoms operators to use Windows.
Microsoft's Marcus Matthias, product manager of Windows Digital Media at Microsoft, said his company was following the French debate with interest but was not preparing to adjust its policy to make Windows Media a "common denominator" for digital media, whether on a TV, mobile phone or computer.
Customers agree that, given the lack of an industry-wide standard, Windows Media could well be on its way to becoming the de facto format.
"In a converged world where everything travels between PCs and phones, there isn't any DRM other than Windows Media that's likely to cut it," said Dominic Strowbridge, marketing director at BT Movio, British telecoms operator BT Group Plc's <BT.L> mobile TV service.
One group of companies, however, is trying to forestall a balkanised copyright protection system, or one that is dominated by Microsoft.
Telecoms operators and consumer electronics companies joined forces several years ago to develop an open standard called Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) DRM.
Until a year ago, the protection standard appeared destined to be the preferred anti-piracy system for media companies, telecoms operators, mobile phone vendors and consumer electronics companies.
However, negotiations over licencing fees have been deadlocked for nearly a year and a half, with the six companies controlling the patents on the technology for OMA DRM 2.0 resisting calls for lower fees.
This has hampered the uptake of OMA DRM by hardware vendors and service providers.
"It has had an impact. It (adoption of OMA DRM 2.0) would have gone faster if licencing terms had been agreed," Buhse said.

Finaly, validation of Wave direct involvment in TNC!
This small 4 moths contract in combination with Army specs. for the PCs/Laptops to
contain TPM as a minimum, is very suggestive of things to come. At least via DOD.

February 08 (EDGAR Online) -
Item 8.01. Other Events.
Wave Systems Corp. has been awarded a $319,000 contract by a United States
Department of Defense agency. Under the contract, Wave will provide consulting
services in connection with a study to evaluate the implementation of trusted
computing solutions for the government. The term of the project is expected to
be four months.
One more question to the board.
Whose TPM is in Gateway computers?
What escapes my understanding is mechanics behind the news releases for wave.
When we get an obscure "we are a part of the winning team that might get a contract",
it is released in all the major news distributions. But when we get a bundling news
from Dell and Gateway, it is just through filing of 8-K, and no major news distribution.
Seems strange to me, but there has to be a rational behind it.
Broadcom Introduces an Advanced Dual-Channel AVC/VC-1/MPEG-2 Video Decoder
Chip for High-Performance Digital Media Centers
Based on Its Field Proven Decoder Technology, Broadcom Delivers Unprecedented
Integration, Performance and Security to Cable, Satellite and IP-Network
Equipment Manufacturers
LAS VEGAS, 2006 International CES, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in wired and wireless
broadband communications semiconductors, today announced a new dual-channel
AVC/VC-1/MPEG-2 video decoder system-on-a-chip (SoC) that enables cable,
satellite and IP-network equipment manufacturers to cost-effectively develop
high-performance media centers. The new Broadcom(R) chip integrates all of
the required media center technology to securely access, store and share
multiple types of digital media content, including high-definition TV (HDTV)
programs, video-on-demand, Internet content, digital video, music and photos,
and voice over IP services.
"In recent years, media centers have evolved to support multiple
simultaneous functions that require advanced audio/video compression, 2D and
3D graphics, powerful processing power, increased memory bandwidth, home
networking and robust security technologies," said Rich Nelson, Vice President
of Marketing for Broadcom's Cable and Satellite Products. "Our extensive
experience in designing chips for the cable, satellite and television
industries has enabled us to develop a next-generation decoder chip that meets
all of the high-performance requirements of media centers."
Based on field-proven AVC decoder technology (currently shipping to
leading manufacturers of set-top boxes), the new BCM7400 HD AVC/MPEG-2 decoder
chip announced by Broadcom today integrates all of the back-end requirements
of a high-performance digital media center into a single-chip solution. The
features integrated into the BCM7400 enable a new generation of media centers
that can receive broadband digital media content via satellite, cable,
telephony or Internet network connections. Once the media center receives
content, it can store, manage and maintain the digital rights, communicate the
content or distribute the content to other media appliances in the home.
The BCM7400's next-generation features include:
* The latest generations of video compression technologies such as
advanced video coding (AVC) (the ITU and ISO joint standard), VC-1 (the
Society for Motion Picture and Television Engineers or SMPTE standard)
and MPEG-2. These video compression technologies enable systems to
support high-definition (HD) and standard definition television
programming.
* Dual audio and video HD channels that enable a single system to
simultaneously deliver HD programs to multiple televisions in the home,
and allow a user to watch an HDTV program while recording another, to
record two HDTV programs at the same time or to display different
programs on the television using picture-in-picture technology.
* Concurrent multi-threaded MIPS CPU with IEEE754 FPU and 128KB
second- level cache provides 875DMIPS capability enabling systems to
support advanced applications with a fast response time, JAVA-based
applications and 3D games.
* Integrated PVR capability that enables the simultaneous recording of
multiple channels, and then enables the user to store and play back the
content throughout the home.
* Advanced 2D and 3D graphics engine that provides unparalleled visual
content and enhances the user interface by providing improved program
guides and navigation capabilities, as well as a user friendly consumer
operating environment that is similar to personal computers.
* Integrated content security processor that provides end-to-end security
and digital rights management of media content. Cable TV downloadable
conditional access system (DCAS) is supported to enable DCAS-based
leased and retail "digital cable ready" set-top boxes. SVP security is
included for content protection in the digitally connected home between
the gateway and its attached clients.
* Integrated peripheral interfaces, such as 10/100 Fast Ethernet and USB 2.0, to connect within the home to other digital appliances or to
connect to an IP network via a DSL modem. Other networking connections,
such as a Wi-Fi(R) network, can be established through a PCI port that
is secured by digital transmission copy protection (DTCP).
Cable TV, Digital Broadcast Satellite and IP Media Center Solutions
The BCM7400 HD AVC/MPEG-2 decoder chip, when combined with other Broadcom
set-top box chips, offers highly integrated media center solutions for several
different applications.
* Cable TV Media Center:
The BCM3255 and BCM7400, when combined with multiple BCM3420 tuners,
provide manufacturers with a complete HD AVC, digital video recording
(DVR) cable-TV media center design that can support IP channel speeds of
up to 120 Mbps, plus two channels of HD AVC video decompression,
advanced downloadable DCAS security, up to 1600 DMIPs processing power,
and a complete home networking management package. Broadcom has
packaged this complete solution into the BCM97456 reference design to
support customers with their next-generation set-top box designs.
* Digital Broadcast Satellite and IP Media Center:
The BCM7400, when combined with the BCM4500 (DVB-S demodulator), BCM3440
(CMOS tuner) and BCM3517 (ATSC demodulator) products, provides
manufacturers with a complete HD AVC, digital video recording (DVR)
satellite reference platform. This same reference platform supports IP
set-top box applications.
Pricing and Availability
The BCM7400 is available today in sample quantities. The chip is packaged
in a 1521-pin QFP and is priced at $49.50 each in 10,000 piece quantities.
