(WSUAN, Fall/95, p.5)
c1000 AD In Yemen in the Hadramawt region a dam burst about this time near the village of Senna and the people of the valley fled. In 1997 researchers using DNA studies found that the Lemba, a Bantu speaking people of southern Africa carry markers distinctive of the cohanim, Jewish priests believed to be descended from Aaron. Lemba oral tradition held that they came to Africa from Senna. Dr. Tudor Parfitt authored "Journey to the Vanished City," a description of his work on the Lemba.
(SFEC, 5/9/99, p.A24)
1802 James Callender, an English-born journalist, published a report in the Richmond, Va., Recorder about Thomas Jefferson and his relationship with the slave Sally Hemmings [Hemings]. Annette Gordon-Reed later published: "Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings, an American Controversy." DNA tests of descendants was planned in 1998 to test for family relationships. The tests indicated that Jefferson fathered at least one child with Hemmings, her youngest son Eston Hemmings in 1808. Dr. Eugene Foster, author of the DNA report, later said the DNA tests showed that any one of 8 Jefferson males could have fathered Eston.
(WSJ, 9/23/97, p.A1)(SFC, 4/29/98, p.A6)(SFEC, 11/1/98, p.A1,7)(WSJ, 11/2/98, p.B11)(WSJ, 2/26/99, p.W15)(SFC, 1/27/00, p.A3)
1808 May 21, Eston Hemmings was born to slave Sally Hemmings, who was owned by Thomas Jefferson. Genetic tests in 1998 showed that DNA from Jefferson's descendants was consistent with DNA from descendants of Hemmings. Some argued that Randolph Jefferson, brother of Thomas, was Eston's father.

1882 Apr 3, Outlaw Jesse James (34) was shot in the back and killed at his home in St. Joseph, Mo., by Robert Ford, a cousin and member of his own gang for a $5,000 reward. Jesse and Frank James, the bank robbing James brothers, were born as Woodson and Alexander. In 1995 the body of Jesse James was exhumed for DNA testing. The test proved that it was James, who was killed in 1882. In 2000 Desmond Barry authored the novel "The Chivalry of Crime" based on the story of Jesse James. In 2000 the body of a man, J. Frank Dalton (d.1951), who claimed to be Jesse James was exhumed for DNA analysis.

Upanishads, speculative and mystical scriptures of Hinduism, regarded as the wellspring of Hindu religious and speculative thought. The Upanishads, which form the last section of the literature of the Veda, were composed beginning c.900 B.C. Of the 112 extant Upanishads, about 13 date from the Vedic period and the remainder are later, sectarian works. The principal early Upanishads develop answers to questions posed in the Rig-Veda and the Brahmanas regarding the real significance of the Vedic sacrifice and the source and controlling power of the world and the individual. They are best known for their doctrine of brahman, the ultimate and universal reality of pure being and consciousness, and the identity of brahman with the inner essence, or atman, of the human being. This equation is expressed in the famous utterances “That art thou” and “All this is brahman.” The Upanishads are not a systematic exposition of concepts but a heterogeneous compilation of material from different sources. In addition to brahman-atman teachings, they contain information about allegorical interpretation of the sacrifice, death and rebirth processes, and yogic practice and experience. They are the basis for the later philosophical schools of Vedanta

No Hair Today!
My star reporter Starla (aka *la) is off on assignment.
So in lieu of "Hair Today" let me present to you the following short essay:
The Eve Dilemna: Apple, Oranges or Chocolate!
Have you ever wondered how the world might have turned out if Eve had rejected Satan's 1st temptation.
c4000BCE Apples (Malus Sieversii) similar to modern day varieties began to appear around Almaty, Kazakhstan. These ultimately produced the Red Delicious and Golden Delicious in America. The Red Delicious was hybridized into the Fuji and the Empire. The Golden Delicious was hybridized into the Gala, the Jonagold, the Mutsu, Pink Lady and Elstar.
(WSJ, 7/3/03, p.A1)
Do you suppose that had Eve said no, Satan would have just said ok, see you later. Or might he have come back and made a 2nd offer, say: How about this lovely orange?
1744 May 11, In Britain Elizabeth Robinson of Middlesex and 2 other women were tried and convicted at the Old Bailey on charges of stealing 104 imported China oranges from a grocer’s warehouse with the intent to sell them. She was sentenced to transport for a term of 7 years. She was pregnant and gave birth on ship.
(SFEC, 10/27/96, p.T9)
Now had Eve reached this point would her courage continue? Would she take the orange and change the course of history, or would she again just say no and change the course of this essay? Do you suppose that Eve at this point had any inkling of how the whole future of humankind might develop based on her simple decision for lunch? Of course Eve was no Nostrodama and she could not foresee how poor Hypatia would be treated a few millennia later:
415 Archbishop Cyril of Alexandria sent a mob of religious police to stop Hypatia, an eccentric pagan ascetic and scholar. The mob kidnapped her, dragged her to a church, stripped and tortured her with broken shards of pottery. Her body parts were then butchered, put on public display and burnt to a crisp. In 2004 Jonathan Kirsch authored "God Against the Gods: The History of the War Between Monotheism and Polytheism."
(SSFC, 3/21/04, p.M1)
Let us suppose for the sake of this essay that Eve was gaining strength of character from "just saying no." Satan, being the devil he was, would certainly have upped the ante. Though not as omniscient as god, he would certainly have known about chocolate.
1893 At the Chicago Exposition Milton Hershey was impressed with an exhibition featuring chocolate-making machinery from Germany and commented to his cousin, Frank Snavely, "Caramels are only a fad. Chocolate is a permanent thing." With that, Hershey decided to go into the chocolate business, purchasing the German-made machinery and installing it at his Lancaster Caramel Company in Pennsylvania. With the help of expert chocolate makers, Hershey was soon producing chocolate-covered caramels, called "novelties." In 1900, Hershey sold the Lancaster Caramel Company for $1 million, but retained the chocolate-making machinery. Soon thereafter, he launched the Hershey Chocolate Company and built a town around it, Hershey, Pennsylvania.
(HNQ, 10/31/00)
Poor Eve. No to apples, no to oranges and now confronted with chocolate. What in god's name should she do. If there was only a good woman's magazine to consult. But forsooth that was ages away.
1693 Jun 27, The 1st woman's magazine "The Ladies' Mercury" was published in London.
(SC, 6/27/02)
Of course she might have resorted to consulting the stars, a technique later made popular by the wife of a famous US president.
1988 May 3, The White House acknowledged that first lady Nancy Reagan had used astrological advice to help schedule her husband's activities. The unflattering revelations surfaced in a yet-to-be published memoir by former chief of staff Donald Regan.
(AP, 5/3/98)
Perhaps she might consider at this point to consult with that pain in the rib husband of hers, that ne'er do well Adam. They were after all in this together. Thought I suspect that by this time their initial afterglow had waned a bit and that she was more of a mind in tune with that famous plate-maker, Francesco Urbini.
c1531-1537 Ceramicist Francesco Urbini was later believed to have created a plate that shows a male head made up entirely of phalluses. In 2003 a British museum paid $317,000 for it. The head is framed by a garland carrying the inscription: "Ogni homo me guarda come fosse una testa de cazi" (Every man looks at me as if I were a dickhead).
(Reuters, 9/18/03)
Refuse chocolate? Hey, the devil made me do it!
Eve! We shout. Stand firm. Wait for the whole 9 yards. Hell, call for the 50-yard line. Use your cell phone. Call god. Better yet read:
2003 Leonard Shlain authored "Sex, Time & Power: How women's Sexuality Shaped Human Evolution."
(SSFC, 8/17/03, p.M1)
Alas poor Eve, one bite of a lousy apple and she was banished.
"Cruel and Unusual" I do believe. Definitely a case for the Supreme Court here.
1992 Feb 25, The Supreme Court ruled prison guards who use unnecessary force against inmates may be violating the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment even if they inflict no serious injuries.

The story goes that Peter Sprague, while the head of National Semiconductor (a job he held for some 30 years, and took them from the pink sheets to a multi-billion dollar global company), came up with the idea for a digital meter. He reasoned that digital bits were like electricity in the beginning; ie. they could get it to your house, but didn't know how to charge for it. He thought the idea so revolutionary, that he patented the idea outside of NSM, and formed a company around it. The premise was that somehow OEM's would include the meter chip in every computer, and Wave would get a small piece of every transaction that washed across it.

LaGrande technology will provide capabilities such as protection of secure memory even from DMA (direct memory access) engines. LaGrande is a security engine that is built into Intel Prescott CPUs and chipsets, expected in the second half of the year. It aims to protect a system's data in ways software-based solutions currently can't offer. The technology will isolate data by setting up "virtual vaults" in hardware that are less vulnerable to viruses or hackers, while also separating applications so contaminations can't be spread from one software program to another.

2005 Longhorn represents Microsoft's best assessment of how computing will evolve and may be ready about this time, though some say 2006-7. Longhorn w/ NGSCB could be a siginificant driver for the adoption of trusted computing.Longhorn has three major components: Avalon, which is the user interface; WinFS, the new file system that is based on metadata; and Indigo, the communications system that will include middleware to pass messages back and forth among different Web services, their objects and components. So a developer will no longer need to understand exactly how everything works.

Evidence exonerates 328, but many still falsely imprisoned
ANN ARBOR, Mich.—Exonerations of defendants convicted of serious crimes more than tripled over the past 15 years as DNA and other new evidence overturned the convictions, a University of Michigan study shows.
The study, "Exonerations in the United States, 1989 through 2003," includes what is believed to be the most comprehensive listing of exonerations in the United States to date and was conducted by U-M law professor Samuel Gross and four students. The study reports that since 1989—when the first DNA exoneration occurred—328 defendants have been exonerated in the U.S. after being convicted of serious crimes such as rape and murder.
The exonerated were 316 men and 12 women; 145 of them were cleared by DNA identification technology, and 183 by other sorts of evidence. Exonerations increased sharply from about 12 a year through the early 1990s to an average of 43 annually after 2000, the U-M study found. The study did not include at least 135 additional innocent defendants who were framed by rogue police officers and cleared within the last five years in two mass exonerations in California and Texas.
"The most important findings of our study concern the cases that we don't see—miscarriages of justice that are not detected," said Gross, an expert on criminal procedure and capital punishment. "The exonerations we see are just the tip of an iceberg. It is clear that there are many more false convictions that are never discovered."
The research indicates that the justice system must continue to improve its investigative methods to reduce the number of convictions of innocent people. The study focuses on three common causes of false convictions: misidentifications, false confessions and perjury. According to Gross, the police should implement different tactics to reduce the danger of false convictions based on different types of faulty information. For instance, convictions based on false confessions could be greatly reduced by videotaping police interrogations so that judges and juries can see for themselves the circumstances that led the defendant to confess.
Another key finding in the research involved racial disparities in the juvenile justice system. Ninety percent of exonerated juvenile defendants are African-American or Hispanic.
The U-M students participating in the research were Kristen Jacoby and Daniel Matheson, Law School; Nicholas Montgomery, Department of Economics and Ford School of Public Policy; and Sujata Patel, School of Public Health.

WSJ 4/22/03
HONG KONG -- As it installs local-phone systems, China is using Internet technology from the start that will substantially lower the cost of communications.
That is in contrast to the U.S. and many developed countries, where phone companies with billions of dollars invested in old-style telecommunications infrastructure are rapidly deploying Internet technology in an effort to cut costs.
Because China's phone companies are building their networks from scratch in many places, the majority of long-distance phone calls in China take place on networks that use voice over Internet protocol, or VOIP, technology, which treat phone calls like data traffic, cutting the cost of putting through a call. Many new local-phone systems in China also are being built with VOIP infrastructure.
"It's not a matter of catch-up" in China, says Gordon Astles, president of Asian-Pacific operations for Cisco Systems Inc., San Jose, Calif., which provides VOIP equipment. "It's a matter of leapfrog."
When regulators introduced competition into the Chinese market five years ago, new players found that the least expensive way to build a network was to rely on Internet-based equipment rather than traditional switches. They wouldn't have to build exchange buildings every few miles to house switches for each phone line, as do traditional carriers. And they would be able to intersperse voice traffic with other data. The Chinese government encouraged them by deciding not to set rates for calls on Internet-based networks.
At the same time, the broader growth of China's economy has triggered huge demand for telephone services. Of the nearly 300 million people with phone service in China today, slightly more than half of them got it in the past four years.
All these forces have combined to drive prices for phone service down sharply in China. Domestic long-distance calls often cost less than a nickel a minute, and a call to North America costs about 25 cents a minute, down from $1 a minute a few years ago.
For example, China Telecom Corp., the former monopoly that still is the country's largest carrier, said its 2003 domestic long-distance use increased 15% and its VOIP system handled a majority of its long-distance calls -- 29 billion of 54 billion overall minutes -- for the first time. Still, its long-distance revenue fell 1.2% last year because VOIP calls cost so much less.
In the U.S., VOIP initially was viewed warily by some carriers that already had billions of dollars invested in their networks. During the past five years, U.S. companies have been racing to upgrade their networks as they seek to lower costs. While almost no calls in the U.S. ran over VOIP networks three years ago, industry experts estimate 10% to 12% do now.
Verizon Communications Inc., New York, estimates that about 12% of the 1.5 billion calls it handles on a typical business day are carried on VOIP networks -- or 180 million calls a day. In January, Verizon announced it would accelerate the conversion of its network to VOIP with Nortel Networks Corp., Brampton, Ontario.
While calls in both China and the U.S. are carried as data, few calls in either country begin that way. That is starting to change in the U.S., as Internet calling using broadband Internet connections is rolled out by the big telecommunications and cable companies, as well as upstarts such as Vonage Holdings Corp., Edison, N.J. AT&T Corp., Bedminster, N.J., began its service last month and expects to be in 100 markets by year end. Qwest Communications International Inc., of Denver, already offers Internet calling for consumers and Verizon is expected to follow this spring.
U.S. businesses are just starting to embrace Internet calling, with 18% of the biggest companies planning to try or roll out the technology, according to Forrester Research. Goldman Sachs estimates that cable-television companies that offer Internet phone calling can steal nearly 20% of residential phone lines from the regional Bells during the next decade.
To the caller, Internet phone calls sound pretty much the same as regular phone calls. What is different in an Internet call is that a person's voice is broken up as if it were a piece of data, like an e-mail message. The data then are sent on the most efficient routes and reassembled on the other end. Regular phone calls travel in a straight path on dedicated lines and are far more expensive to put through.
Such consumer uses of Internet calling isn't yet taking place in China. But one similarity between the Chinese and U.S. markets is the rise of inexpensive phone services such as discount-calling cards, which are among the most popular uses of Internet calling.
In China, discount-calling cards that access VOIP networks are sold in grocery stores and at newsstands. Consumers also can sign up for VOIP services from their homes or by using five-digit prefix numbers in the manner that some discount long-distance services work in the U.S.
"The technology has become mainstream," says Andrew Coward, Asian-Pacific vice president of technical operations for Juniper Networks Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif. "There's profit being generated from it. It's no longer an experiment."
For equipment providers such as Juniper and Cisco, the VOIP network expansion in China cushioned some of the blow when carriers around the world slashed capital spending after the industry bubble burst in 2000.
Cisco helped build China Unicom Ltd.'s VOIP network, which Mr. Astles says is the world's largest by reach, stretching to 350 cities. Nortel recently announced a deal to help China Railcom Co. build a VOIP-based local phone service in Chongqing, China's third-largest city.
The VOIP systems are driving sharp gains in long-distance use for carriers. But because of price competition, they are producing a mixed effect on financial results. China Unicom, which was formed in 1994 as China Telecom's first challenger, began to rely on VOIP for a majority of its long-distance traffic in 2002. Last year, overall long-distance use rose 50% but revenue climbed just 2.8%, as the company's VOIP network handled 57% of long-distance traffic.
China Mobile (Hong Kong) Ltd., which was split off from China Telecom, relied on its VOIP network to handle about 40% of its long-distance traffic last year, up from 23% in 2002, a spokesman says.
I just read the paper version. Try googling under the title:

Both. Janus is the Roman god of beginnings and god of gates and doors who has two faces, one looking inward and one lookng outward:
Janus is the Roman god known as the custodian of the universe. He is the god of beginnings and the guardian of gates and doors. He is lord over the first hour of every day, the first day of the month and January, the first month of the year. Two heads back to back represent Janus, each looking in opposite directions. His double-faced head appears on many Roman coins. Originally, one face was bearded and one was not, most likely representing the sun and the moon. In his right hand he holds a key. He was worshipped at the beginning of planting time, harvest, marriages, births and other important beginnings in a person’s life.
The Romans believed you could ensure good endings if you began an endeavor with prayers to Janus. His principle temple in the Forum had doors facing east and west to mark the beginning and end of the day. Between the doors stood his statue gazing in opposite directions. In every home, the morning prayer was addressed to him and in many domestic undertakings, his help was sought.
Janus also represents the transition between primitive life and civilization, between rural and urban existence. He also maintains the balance between peace and war and youth and old age. Janus was considered to be a great king during the Golden Age and brought the people peace and great wealth. He introduced money, cultivation of the fields and the law. He was considered the protector of Rome.
When Romulus and his associates kidnapped the Sabine Virgins, the Sabines sought revenge. The daughter of one of the guards on Capitolian Hill, one of the Seven Hills of Rome, betrayed her country and guided the enemy into the city. The Sabines attempted to climb the hill but Janus made a hot spring erupt from the ground and the would-be attackers fled. After this, the gates of his temple were always left open in times of war so the god could intervene as necessary. In times of peace, the gates were closed.

2004 Q1, The new Pentium 4 processors code-named Prescott to be released. Intel will build LaGrande technology into chips beginning with the upcoming Prescott CPU and support chipset.

SAN DIEGO, Mar 18, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Nanogen, Inc. (NGEN) announced today that it was issued U.S. Patent No. 6,706,473, "Systems and Devices for Photoelectrophoretic Transport and Hybridization of Oligonucleotides," by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The '473 patent relates to new devices for nanofabrication that enable the photoelectric transport and positioning of self-assembling DNA nanostructures (and microstructures) on a semiconductor substrate material. These devices use directed light beams to create precise electric fields on the substrate material. Charged nanostructures (such as DNA derivatized nanoparticles) are transported to the electric field site where they become attached and can then lead to the further self-organization of higher-order nanoscale or microscale structures and devices. With the addition of the '473 patent, Nanogen now has 58 issued patents in the United States.

Yes. That's my time frame. I think 2008 will be a good year.
Tomorrow, or the next day, or maybe the day after that.
Maybe next week, surely by the end of the month, but could be next month. Some say in 2 months, others say 3, yet others say next year and a few say never.
We'll see tomorrow.
Nice work.
