When you're done playing with your gun:
Deer are creatures of habit, and patterns for foraging can be somewhat predictable. Repellent products may help by changing the usual path they take through your yard. The feedback on Feather Meal (turkey feathers that are cooked, ground and dried) is that it has been successful for many when used as a barrier and aromatic defense.
Choose plants that deer tend to avoid such as marigolds, larkspur, zinnias, delphinium, impatiens, lupine and yarrow to name a few.

DNAPrint Technology Debated in Nature Genetics Journal
5/3/2005 11:28:38 AM
SARASOTA, Fla., May 3, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- DNAPrint genomics (DNAP) announced today that its technology is reviewed and debated in a series of letters to the editor in "Nature Genetics," one of the world's premier scientific journals.
Dr. Mark Shriver of Penn State University, Dr. Tony Frudakis of DNAPrint genomics and Dr. Bruce Budowle, Senior Scientist for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Quantico, Va., in a letter to the editor published in this week's edition took exception to an opinion piece previously published in the magazine. Ethicists Mildred K. Cho of the Stanford University Center for Biomedical Ethics and Pamela Sankar of the University of Pennsylvania, Medical Ethics, took a position in their commentary that data from human "populations" cannot and should not be used in crime solving. In particular, they criticize the forensic use of data derived from human populations, the outdated method of "racial classification" or "binning," and the notion of inferring elements of physical appearance from ancestry -- claiming that the latter is tantamount to "stereotyping."
Drs. Shriver, Frudakis and Budowle, in their response, published under the heading "Getting the Science and the Ethics Right in Forensic Genetics," pointed out that population is and has always been a central concept in biology, that advanced statistical methods enable the characteristics of populations to be clearly defined, that the current state-of-the-art method in measuring ancestry is admixture estimation, not binning or categorization, and that the inference of phenotype indirectly from a knowledge of ancestry admixture can be made through the use of systematic and rational approaches, such as DNAPrint's objective and empirical database-driven processes.
The two ethicists, in an addendum to the Company's published response, stated, "We do not argue against the conduct of good science. But using DNA analysis for predictive purposes, to create a suspect pool (in contrast to its current use to rule in or rule out identity of an individual suspect), extends the technology into a news sphere with potentially serious ramifications."
Dr. Frudakis, DNAPrint's Chief Scientific Offer, said after publication of their letter that debate on the issue is welcome. "We think it speaks volumes that our technology is so impactful and thought-provoking that people feel compelled to write commentary about it in 'Nature Genetics,'" he said. "It is quite common and healthy to have meaningful debates in such forums regarding new technology such as ours."
DNAPrint's DNAWITNESS(TM) product for the law enforcement forensics market is a presumptive (investigative) genetic test, rather than confirmatory test such as human ID tests. The difference between the two is that while the former is used to help an investigator prioritize leads and make decisions, only the latter can be used to incriminate a suspect in a crime by matching a person with a crime scene sample.
"DNA is considered authoritative, and, therefore, with good reason, many apply a double standard to DNA that is not applied to less objective and scientific sources," said Richard Gabriel, DNAPrint's Chief Executive Officer and President. "For example, can anyone imagine an investigator not asking a human eyewitness what a suspect looked like because the concept of population is complex and continuous? It is precisely because physical appearance and ancestry are complex and continuous that quantitative, objective and confidence-qualified science should be used to infer them."
A central debate surrounding the application of genome-based technologies for forensic science is whether the relationships between individuals and populations can be determined objectively, without imposing imperfect prior assumptions. Many consider this to be an esoteric debate, of interest mainly to academic scholars. Both in house and through collaboration with experts such as Dr. Shriver of Penn State University's Department of Anthropology, DNAPrint has developed and implemented novel mathematical methods for reconstructing these relationships. Drs. Shriver and Frudakis are scheduled to release a textbook early in 2006 with Academic Press Publishers detailing the new science of "Molecular Photofitting."
Dr. Shriver said, "To date, many forensics investigators can testify that when empirical database-driven methods are used to interpret genome-based conclusions, and when interpretation is made in a quantitative and confidence- qualified manner, precise and reliable estimates for certain phenotypes or elements of physical appearance can be made from a knowledge of genome- determined ancestry admixture."
Last year's revenues were 50k. I am hoping we double last quarter to over 200k.
Not a good idea. The person could get fired quick and the company could suffer in return for leaking info.
That's such a puzzle to me. Why would they buy T-Bills as the US deficit increases pushing the dollar lower? Granted they have a lot of dollars and need to do something with them, and supporting the economy that buys their goods is perhaps like buying insurance, or is it more like providing feed for an aging golden goose?
On April 18, 2005, the Board of Directors approved, and recommended that the shareholders approve an amendment to the Articles of Incorporation to effect a combination of its common stock (sometimes referred to as a “reverse split”), on the terms described herein. The number of votes for approval must exceed the number of votes against approval, assuming a quorum is present, to approve the combination. Therefore, abstentions and broker non-votes (which may occur where shares are held in a brokerage or bank account, if a beneficial owner of stock fails to provide the broker or the bank voting instructions as to such shares) will not count as votes against the combination.
Vegas was ruled out by Carrie in the initial proposal, so those 2 votes were only in the realm of wishfull thinking and therefore do not apply.

"We are very pleased that the uncertainty surrounding TPMS legislation has been resolved and the rule is finally in place," says Robert Rudman, President and CEO of SmarTire. "SmarTire has invested considerable technical and financial resources in the development of direct measurement systems and the public deserves this higher standard of performance and reliability. This legislation has also driven interest in other vehicle markets such as trucks, buses, recreational vehicles and motorcycles and we anticipate this legislation will expand to cover these vehicles in the future. SmarTire's advanced direct measurement TPMS products have been chosen by some of the world's most prestigious manufacturers including Aston Martin in the automotive sector, New Flyer and MCI in the bus sector, and Monaco, Country Coach and Western RV in the recreational vehicle sector."
In November 2000, a U.S. federal transportation law was enacted to prevent the re-occurrence of automotive tragedies as experienced with Firestone equipped Ford sport utility vehicles. The Transportation, Recall, Enhancement, Accountability, and Documentation (TREAD) Act empowered NHTSA to improve vehicle safety through various initiatives including one regulation that requires the installation of low pressure warning systems in new vehicles to indicate when tires are significantly under-inflated.

The stock price will likely hold in the present range until the Q4 numbers are made public. These may not look that good on the surface due to the sale or pending sale of 4 previous weak acquisitions and the SEC litigation. However, most current earnings are from sales of Samsung notebooks which now feature the the new TPM security chip (which, by the way, can be enabled by WAVE Systems software - WAVX). I will wait for the 4th Q report and then buy more if it dips. If it does not dip it will be a very strong signal to buy more.
"If" is no longer the operative word. Carrie stated that news of at least one acquisition will "hopefully" happen within 6 months. The operative word is now "when" and within 6 months will become "who's next."
Acquisitions hopefully to be announced within 6 months. Push to move to Nasdaq following acquisitions at 12 month time frame.

Notebooks: SAMSUNG's big strides
Taking note of the growing importance accorded to security in corporate India, SAMSUNG has made biometrics available on some notebooks. The company has also introduced a feature called Trusted Platform Module that uses PKI techniques along with a fingerprint reader for authentication.
Although SAMSUNG entered the Indian notebook market only last year, the company has already made its presence felt. According to IDC, SAMSUNG has sold 7,000 units capturing a marketshare of 4.7 and 3.7 percent in the consumer and commercial space respectively. In terms of value, the company stands fifth with 3.9 percent marketshare. By volume, SAMSUNG is sixth with 4.9 percent marketshare.
A late entrant, the company realised that a huge market was opening on account of the wireless hotspots offered by service providers such as Bharti and Sify. Another big growth driver for corporates opting for a wireless infrastructure was the fact that the cost of setting up a wireless infrastructure was becoming more competitive compared to traditional wired networks, plus it offered superior flexibility.
After much deliberation, the company decided to focus on Intel's Centrino platform. Says Ramanjeet Singh, Country Product Manager, Note PCs, SAMSUNG India, "We were the first company to launch notebooks based on Intel's Centrino platform in India." According to IDC India, 70 percent of notebook market shipments in India are of Centrino-based notebooks. Of the dozen notebook models that are available, 11 are Centrino-based, and only one is powered by a Celeron processor.
Says Sameer Kochhar, CEO, Skoch Consultancy, "Portability and enhanced battery life are the key reasons why Centrino notebooks are going to play an increasingly significant role in the Indian notebook market." SAMSUNG's decision has truly paid off, with the company signing up clients such as ICICI, Punjab National Bank, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Hyundai Motors, Reliance, iGATE and Excel Services. The order from PwC was for 500 notebooks. Another big deal involved supplying Hyundai with notebooks at 131 dealer locations.
The company placed special emphasis on features such as making the notebooks lighter without compromising on battery life (up to five hours using a single battery), providing a memory stick slot for easy data transfer from digicams and other digital gadgets, and including no less than four USB ports. All this was backed by a three-year warranty.
Taking note of the growing importance accorded to security in corporate India, SAMSUNG has made biometrics available on some notebooks. The company has also introduced a feature called Trusted Platform Module that uses PKI techniques along with a fingerprint reader for authentication.
Beyond Centrino
While its Centrino models let SAMSUNG cater to the emerging demand for wireless computing, it realised the need for tapping the notebook market in the Rs 55,000-65,000 price band. Says Singh, "We consulted IDC and found that the maximum growth in the notebook market was happening in this price range." Acting on this insight, in December 2004 SAMSUNG launched two Celeron-based notebooks, the P-28 and V-25, priced at Rs 53,990 and Rs 64,990 respectively. However, the V-25 was pulled out of the market as it did not have wireless capability. Today the company has only one Celeron model, the P-28 Echo, which supports wireless computing. According to Singh, the model is clocking huge volumes.
The current SAMSUNG range of notebooks starts from Rs 53,990 and goes up to Rs 1,79,900. The P-Series is targeted at the corporate segment while the Q-Series is aimed at travellers requiring a lightweight notebook. The M-Series, with its wide screen, enhanced resolution and portable multimedia features, is targeted at doctors, architects and gamers. The X-Series is for lifestyle users. Of these product categories, Singh says that the X-Series and P-Series are SAMSUNG's hottest notebook families.
Expanding its footprint
The South Korean giant is also strengthening its distribution with plans of increasing its channel partners from 225 to 400 by the end of 2005. It also intends to expand its presence from 24 cities to 36. Of its 225 existing partners, 125 are pure resellers (silver partners), 75 have retail outlets and come under the gold category (they target corporate customers), while the remaining 25 are platinum partners who stock exclusively SAMSUNG's products. The company re-trains all its partners every quarter. Additionally, SAMSUNG encourages them to set up retail outlets as it believes that notebooks have great retail value. Simultaneously, it is also running promotional schemes for its channel partners.
117% growth
With its predominant focus on the Centrino, Singh believes that SAMSUNG's share of the notebook segment will improve in 2005. IDC estimates that 3,00,000 notebooks will be sold in the country by the end of this calendar year. Of this, the firm estimates that 70 percent, or 210,000 units, will be Centrino models. Singh is hoping that SAMSUNG's early bet on the Centrino will help it drive the market. Says he, "We aim to sell 40,000 notebooks which will enable us to capture 20 percent [of the Centrino-based segment]." Its target audience will be corporates and government. With IDC stating that the notebook market grew by 117 percent in 2004 over 2003, the potential is obviously considerable. IDC also predicts that the market will grow to 5,70,000 units by 2008. With improving wireless infrastructure, Wi-Fi on a notebook is becoming commonplace.
Against this backdrop, SAMSUNG's focus on wireless may well help the company gain even more traction.
