Hear hear -- Physician calls for compassion in health care — for ailing patients and burnt-out workers
'I don't think people want to know what doctors feel,' says Winnipeg doctor Jillian Horton
"Worldwide it's the same old, in many areas of worth and exploitation. It's the capitalist way."
CBC Radio · Posted: Jan 18, 2024 4:26 PM EST | Last Updated: August 15
In 2023, about 1 in 10 Canadian doctors considered attempting suicide. Dr. Jillian Horton says the health
-care system has to change to make room for the emotional well-being of doctors. She's helping
doctors understand that in order to care better for their patients, they must care better for
themselves. (Shutterstock / Alliance Images)
LISTEN -- Ideas 53:59 Healing and the Healer: Dr. Jillian Horton on compassion in health care
*Originally published on Jan. 18, 2024.
Jillian Horton traces her love of medicine to her sister, Wendy, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour at age six.
Wendy's surgery took away her hearing, sight, and her ability to walk. It was then Jillian Horton saw how dehumanizing the health-care system could be.
"After her surgery, my parents asked the pediatric neurologist about her prognosis. And that doctor put Wendy's scans up on a light box and he shouted at them: 'Can't you people get it through your heads? This girl has no brain left!'"
Dr. Horton is a specialist in internal medicine in Winnipeg. She says the health-care system leaves no space for doctors to show any authentic human emotion, requiring medical staff to steer clear of all feeling — but she wants to change that.

https://www.cbc.ca/radio/thenextchapter/dr-jillian-horton-examines-burnout-facing-healthcare-professionals-in-new-book-1.6728708
In her book, We Are All Perfectly Fine: A Memoir of Love, Medicine and Healing, she writes about what she's witnessed as a doctor and the necessity for compassion for both health-care workers as well as those on the receiving end of health care.
Horton recently won the Edna Staebler Award for Creative Nonfiction .. https://www.wlu.ca/information-for/community-members/literary-initiatives/edna-staebler-awards/edna-staebler-award-for-creative-non-fiction/index.html , based at Wilfrid Laurier University. She spoke in front of an audience at the awards ceremony.
Here is an excerpt from her talk.
I've experienced all the cardinal signs of burnout: depersonalization, emotional exhaustion, and a low feeling of personal accomplishment. And sometimes I had them at work. But for doctors, high performance at work is like blood flow to the brain in trauma. It's the last thing the body hangs on to at all costs. So where did my burnout show up? It showed up with my family, with my small, precious children, and with the people I love the most. I came home from work some days, a burnt-out, empty husk of a person. And after a while, as I wrote about in my book, I hit a point where I knew that something had to change.
I ended up going to a retreat near Rochester, New York — a mindfulness retreat for doctors. It's held at a Zen center in the woods called Chapin Mill. That program is run by other doctors who have made a career out of teaching mindfulness to health-care workers. It's evidence-based. It's been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the results have been replicated in centers around the world.

Not an unfair thought to think Scottie could be less intense this weekend than normal. You would know why he isn't in my Diehard this week. Lesson learned for next year. Hope he can avoid a repeat of last year's final. Oh, and just noticed another 20 points would have me... you know that too. LOLs That's life.
Why, dear boy, It's lies all the way down -- WATCH LIVE: Donald Trump speaks in Arizona | LiveNOW from FOX
Good. Was new to me too.
LOLOL Elizabeth Booker Houston is a comedian worthy of the late George Carlin's memory.
George Carlin ANNIHILATES Donald Trump and Everything He Represents
conix, Are you really pretending i did not say that to you, more than twice.
""Told you a long time ago ..." Oh, yes Daddy. Tell me more on what you said that is not true? Please!
What a bubble you are in, fuagf. Not self aware"
What exactly are you saying there which you claim i just said which was not true.
Justify your slander, no bullshit. Or don't reply to this post.
conix, Mine to you that long time ago was never more than an opinion of an ordinary guy.
And just then to you i simply stated a fact. A fact which carried none at all of the sort
of arrogant, rude presumptuous pomposity which you have brought to this board.
No matter how you ... "You told many people many things that should be ignored.
How pompous of you to say that. Ridiculous." ... love to misrepresent positions.
conix, Told you a long time ago that Democrats would do what is best for America and for the world.
And told you long time ago Democrats would do that unlike the Republicans who caved to the
bullying, the insults, and the lies of the wannabe Putin-like Donald Trump.
No country is perfect and no party is perfect, For you to grab little cherries as you do and to use what
RFK Jr. says about Democrat Party process after he asked the Trump camp to take him on is a joke.
Updated: Excellent. Michele Obama shone with the rest of them.
""But let’s be clear: going high does not mean putting on a smile and saying nice things when confronted by viciousness and cruelty...Going high means standing fierce against hatred while remembering that we are one nation under God...And going high means unlocking the shackles of lies and mistrust with the only thing that can truly set us free: the cold hard truth." And then she said her harshest line of the speech: "So let me be as honest and clear as I possibly can. Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country," which isn't all that harsh, really, although she gave reasons why she believed that, especially highlighting the chaos caused by Trump during the pandemic's early days. "
Michelle highlights DNC 2924
conix, Bullshit. Dems won't give me a spot so i'll beg Trump to take me in.
I do have an iota of sympathy for those who have donated both time and money for him as he
and his vp choice leave their promises to build a 3rd party in the ashes of personal ambition.
Agree. It was. Politicians must make so many more considerations than we less restricted mortals.
Too many of the critics we suffer here seem still not to be mature enough to even consider that.

Fantastic. Sometimes when doing my deep breathing exercises, virtually 90% of the time i'm not on my ass, i think of you and all the others like you whose lung function must be much worse than my COPD strangled mass. LOL Ok, since you said that i assume it could have been done. Thanks, because it is good to know, otherwise would have been still wondering. Serves me right for sleeping. All nighters again on the horizon!! LOL Kidding, am getting too old for so much of that again, anyway it's the first time i've been crushed by a withdrawal so would be like sitting on a mountain in case there was another tsunami coming.

Seriously, thanks again for offering the opportunity i missed.
"Too bad you didn't stuff Cantlay in there--would have saved ya about 20"
Yes, it would be like having Trump as president again and not being able to get rid of him.
As you know it's been long recognized Netanyahu is the wolf in Israel.
"Israel does not help itself having Netanyahu as their leader. His policies aggravated the entire region. I don't like Hamas either, but they are showing the world how bad Israel is, the daily slaughter of 1000s of women and children, who cries for them. Not our resident appeaser, Israel losing the war of the 21st century."

As one apartheid was dismantled in South Africa, another was erected in Palestine.
In the absence of peace and in the shadow of colonisation, the country has slid further towards fascism, enshrining Jewish supremacy into its laws and extending it to all of historic Palestine, from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. In no time, the fanatical and far-right parties gained momentum and took over the reins of power under the opportunistic leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, undermining Israel’s own institutions, and all chances of peace based on coexistence between two peoples.
They rejected all compromise and have begun devouring the entirety of historic Palestine, expanding the illegal Jewish settlement on stolen Palestinian lands throughout the occupied West Bank in an attempt to squeeze the Palestinians out. They also tightened their siege of the Gaza Strip, the world’s largest open-air prison, and dropped all pretence of ever allowing it to unite with its Palestinian hinterland in a sovereign Palestinian state.
Then came the October 7 attack – a rude wake-up call reminding Israel that its colonial enterprise is neither tenable nor sustainable, that it could not lock in two million people and throw away the key, that it must address the root causes of the conflict with the Palestinians, namely their dispossession, occupation and siege.
But the Netanyahu regime, true to its nature, turned the tragedy into a rallying cry and doubled down on its racist dehumanisation of the Palestinians, paving the way for a genocidal war. It declared war on “evil”, by which it meant, not only Hamas, but also the people of Gaza. One Israeli leader after another, starting with the president himself, implicated all the Palestinians in the gruesome attack, claiming there are no innocents in Gaza.
Since then, Israel turned vengeful, tribal and adamant on destruction and expansion with total disregard for basic human decency and international law. Israel’s colonial war became a war on hospitals, schools, mosques and residential buildings, financed, armed and protected by the United States and other Western lackeys and killing thousands of Palestinian civilians – children, doctors, teachers, journalists, men and women, old and young, as if they were enemy combatants.
But this foreign tribe has no chance of surviving among all the indigenous people of the region, who have coalesced more than ever before against the bloody intruder. Israel can no longer use its fanciful theological claims to justify its violent racist practices. God does not sanction the slaughter of innocent children. And nor should Israel’s American and Western patrons.

Omar and Tlaib Are Condemned in the US for Saying What Prominent Israelis Are Saying
"Supporting Palestinian rights is antisemitic because Israel wants it to be"
October 12, 2023
The White House is ripping Squad members for proposing de-escalation and diplomacy to stop the killing of Israelis and Palestinians.
[...]
Though she did not specifically mention the names of Democratic US Representatives Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Cori Bush of Missouri, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, and several other House members, there was no confusion .. https://www.axios.com/2023/10/11/squad-democrats-israel-hamas-tensions .. about the targets of Jean-Pierre’s remarks.
So what sort of “repugnant” things have these House Democrats been saying in the days since Hamas gunmen massacred Israeli civilians at a music festival and kibbutzim, and since Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that “we are at war” and promised that Israel’s military would strike targets in Gaza with a force “like never before”? What “disgraceful” statements have been made since Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant ordered a “complete siege” of Gaza—blocking access to electricity, food, water, and fuel for an enclave that Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders on Wednesday described .. https://www.sanders.senate.gov/press-releases/news-sanders-statement-on-continuing-violence-in-israel-and-gaza/#:~:text=For%20many%2C%20it%20is%20no,continuing%20the%20cycle%20of%20violence. .. as “an open-air prison, with millions of people struggling to secure basic necessities”?
On the day before Jean-Pierre spoke, Omar said .. https://twitter.com/IlhanMN/status/1711468661532135904 .. , “Just as we honor the humanity of the hundreds of innocent Israeli civilians and 9 Americans who were killed this weekend, we must honor the humanity of the innocent Palestinian civilians who have been killed and whose lives are upended.”
[...]
Consider Daniel Levy, a former Israeli peace negotiator and top adviser to former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, who told the BBC .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybkQqYX0828 , “If anyone told me that what the militants did on the weekend was a legitimate response to years and years of occupation. I would say: ‘No, you’re wrong-headed. You’ve lost sight of humanity and reality.’ And if anyone tells me that what Israel is doing in Gaza today is a legitimate response to what happened on the weekend, it’s exactly the same.”
[Insert: Israel voters message to American voters, and to Netanyahu -- Israel Is Somewhere It’s Never Been Before
[...]What has altered Netanyahu’s behavior can only remain a source of speculation. Is it his ongoing trial for bribery, fraud, and breach of trust? Or is it, as former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak argued in a recent FP Live interview .. https://foreignpolicy.com/podcasts/foreign-policy-live/ehud-barak-israels-former-prime-minister/ , the consequences of a quest for absolute power that corrupts absolutely? Or perhaps it’s the influence of Netanyahu’s closed circle of advisors and his family—especially his son Yair—who trade in conspiracy theories and paranoia?
P - Whatever the cause, Netanyahu has produced perhaps the gravest internal crisis in Israel’s history. As Pfeffer writes .. https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/2023-03-26/ty-article/.premium/netanyahu-is-now-pyromaniac-in-chief-of-a-government-of-arsonists/00000187-1f6d-d7c4-ab8f-ff6f8f9e0000 : “This is Netanyahu like he’s never been before. Gone is the risk-averse and pragmatic prime minister who even his rivals admitted didn’t ‘play games with national security.’ Benjamin Netanyahu at 73 is now the pyromaniac-in-chief of a government of arsonists prepared to set the country alight just so they can bulldoze the hated judiciary and establish their own hegemony.” Whether he can change course remains to be seen.
No. 3. The Occupation Remains a Tinderbox.
The Israeli occupation of the West Bank, long seen as among the most consequential threats to Israel’s long-term security and well-being, has been absent from demonstration discourse. Leftists and other critics have called out the cynicism of demonstrations that demand democracy inside Israel but ignore the Israeli government’s fundamentally anti-democratic policies and actions toward Palestinians and systematic discrimination against Arab citizens of Israel.

Israeli human rights lawyer Michael Sfard, an expert on the rules of war, observed Wednesday .. https://twitter.com/sfardm/status/1712088199277806035 .. that “Hamas committed abominable war crimes for which there can be no forgiveness. But the laws of war weren’t meant only for situations in which our blood is cool, or when there is no justified anger or understandable desire for revenge.” The lawyer explained .. https://www.haaretz.com/opinion/2023-10-11/ty-article-opinion/.premium/israelis-must-maintain-their-humanity-even-when-their-blood-boils/0000018b-1e18-d465-abbb-1ebe62c80000 :

“The automatic Israeli conclusion, as on previous occasions when its normalcy was shattered a bit, is that if death and destruction haven’t achieved their goal until now, more aerial killings of Palestinians and more destruction and vengeance are the answer. That’s the conclusion of both the government and the army, but also of many Israelis,” wrote Hass. “And it’s also apparently the conclusion reached by Western governments, which raced to voice support for Israel while ignoring Israel’s structural violence and cruelty, and the context of the Palestinian people’s ongoing dispossession from their land.”
A child of Jewish Holocaust survivors who has been honored with the International Press Institute’s “World Press Freedom Hero” award and a Reporters Without Borders Prize for Press Freedom, Hass observed after the Hamas attacks:
--
In a few days Israelis went through what Palestinians have experienced as a matter of routine for decades, and are still experiencing—military incursions, death, cruelty, slain children, bodies piled up in the road, siege, fear, anxiety over loved ones, captivity, being targets of vengeance, indiscriminate lethal fire at both those involved in the fighting (soldiers) and the uninvolved (civilians), a position of inferiority, destruction of buildings, ruined holidays or celebrations, weakness and helplessness in the face of all-powerful armed men, and searing humiliation.
Therefore, this must be said once again—we told you so. Ongoing oppression and injustice explode at unexpected times and places. Bloodshed knows no borders.
--
Hass is one of the most prominent journalists in the Middle East. She writes for Haaretz,
[...]
Widely read and referenced, Haaretz is very much a part of the debate in Israel.
Often bluntly so. Hours after the October 7 attack, the newspaper’s editorial declared .. https://www.haaretz.com/opinion/editorial/2023-10-08/ty-article-opinion/netanyahu-bears-responsibility/0000018b-0b9d-d8fc-adff-6bfd1c880000 , “The disaster that befell Israel on the holiday of Simchat Torah is the clear responsibility of one person: Benjamin Netanyahu. The prime minister, who has prided himself on his vast political experience and irreplaceable wisdom in security matters, completely failed to identify the dangers he was consciously leading Israel into when establishing a government of annexation and dispossession, when appointing [extreme right-wingers] to key positions, while embracing a foreign policy that openly ignored the existence and rights of Palestinians.”
Plenty of Israeli readers disagreed with the editorial, just as plenty of Americans disagree with calls for de-escalation from Omar and Tlaib, the only two Muslim women currently serving in Congress.
But to dismiss the views of Omar, Tlaib, and other dissenting voices in Congress by saying, “There are not two sides here…” is to reject the reality that there are many sides to the debate in Israel, in Palestine, and in the United States. Labeling arguments that recognize the humanity of everyone involved, and that propose strategies for breaking cycles of violence, as sickening and “repugnant” diminishes reasoned debate at a point when it is more necessary than ever.

D.L. Hughley has extended his support of Vice President Kamala Harris as she continues her presidential campaign, appearing at the final night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention. He not only took jabs at former president Donald Trump, but apologized to Harris for statements he made in the past.

“So I did what I should’ve done in the first place. I learned that she had done for us exactly what she promised to. I believe your apology should be as loud as your accusation. And I’m here apologizing to the whole damn world. I was wrong and Im so very glad I was wrong because Kamala, you give me hope for the future.”

He continued, “I guarantee you this, Kamala’s been Black a lot longer than Trump’s been a Republican. And, if he keeps sliding in the polls the way he is, the only way he can keep Kamala out of the White House is if he buys it and refuses to rent it to her.”

In remarks that leaned heavily on his background as a reverend, Al Sharpton delivered an impassioned speech on the fourth night of the DNC.
“On one side of this race is Donald Trump, a fellow New Yorker I’ve known for 40 years. Only once — once — in that time did he take a position on racial issues,” Sharpton said.
“He spent a small fortune on full-page ads calling for the execution of five innocent young teenagers,” Sharpton said in reference to the Central Park Five.
These were five Black and Brown New York teenagers who were wrongly convicted of rape. Trump took out ads in the newspaper calling to reinstate the death penalty.
“It was there that I saw Trump loved to fan racial flames,” Sharpton said.
“On the other side is a woman that I’ve walked with in Selma, Alabama to commemorate the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. Kamala Harris spoke to me that day about unity and passing bills.”
Sharpton later introduced the Central Park Five to deliver joint remarks.
VIDEO - Members of the Central Park 5 voice their support for Harris
Exonerated members of the “Central Park Five" called on the DNC audience to "vote with us" for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
In 2002, the five men — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, Korey Wise and Yusef Salaam (now a member of New York City Council .. https://www.npr.org/2023/11/07/1211319472/exonerated-central-park-five-member-is-set-to-win-seat-on-new-york-city-council ) — saw their convictions vacated for a 1989 crime in which a white jogger was badly beaten and raped in Central Park. The crime dominated headlines in the city, already dealing with racial tensions.
At the time, former President Donald Trump, then a rising real-estate mogul in New York, took out full-page ads in newspapers demanding the state bring back the death penalty.
The five were just teens when the attack took place, but police rounded them up and interrogated them for the crime. They were convicted and served years in prison before the case got another look. Another man, a serial rapist and killer, eventually confessed to the crime.
"45 wanted us unalive," Salaam said, referring to Trump, the nation's 45th president. "Today we are exonerated because the actual perpetrator confessed and DNA proved it. [Trump] still says he still stands by the original guilty verdict. He dismisses scientific evidence rather than admit he was wrong."
Salaam spoke alongside activists Wise, Santana and Richardson. McCray was not in attendance for the address.
Trump has not apologized for taking out the full-page ad (which didn't name the five men explicitly) and in 2019 said, “You have people on both sides of that. They admitted their guilt.”
The New York Times reported Trump said .. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/18/nyregion/central-park-five-trump.html , “If you look at some of the prosecutors, they think that the city never should have settled that case — so we’ll leave it at that.”

Agree. I felt that was a generalization they figured was a legitimate one as they are
talking of the culture (generally of all men and all women.) If that makes any sense.
"A key finding is that men and women of all cultures agree on which men and women are attractive and who are not.
I'd say yes and no. Some of the most attractive men I've known weren't "handsome", or even what an aesthetician would call "good looking"."
Got a feeling you won't see any of the candidates taking strong positions like that on the war. it's politics and the Jewish lobby is strong one. Would be good to be wrong on that. Many of the bodies i'd guess have gone unidentified into mass graves. It hurt just typing that that last. .
Yep, read "Even though studies suggest that a continued use of closed captioning will not only make your brain accustomed to them but will also improve your literacy rate," that. It impressed and is good you are finding it useful. I just get away now with volume up, for most movies. It seems on some they purposely do something to the audio, my feeling is could be to make male voices, particularly, huskier. That's likely all wrong. Seems almost like a tiny echo, or something. Sometimes i just leave the movie.
I hit a wrong button the other day and got an audio describing all background noises which the article said closed caption does in print. Tolerated it for a time before finally finding the button to turn it off again, so maybe i have closed caption on my tv too. Will have a look.

Good grab, zab. It's lousy of him that brooklyn13 didn't go for more detail as obviously you did. It's telling that in the rationalizing of his defense of the war he has bombed us with irrelevant whataboutisms, which he justifies by saying he is providing context which really wasn't, yet here when he could have made the effort to grab some real context he didn't bother to. And noted your article also makes clear many other Jewish people jumped on the bookstore unjustly, just as brooklyn13 did.

Closed Captioning VS Subtitles: Differences & When to Use Them
by Ishan Beri
[...]
The difference between closed captioning and subtitles is that while subtitles are intended for those who cannot understand the dialogue, closed captions are intended for times when the entire audio component can’t be heard by the viewer.
Unlike subtitles, however, captions translate all the words and sound into text such as background sounds, speaker distinction and any other information that the audio would have communicated. Subtitles, on the other hand, assume that the audience can hear the audio, but cannot understand the dialogue. Therefore, they don’t need to include any background noises or point out which character is speaking, because this will be evident in the audio itself.
The other difference between subtitles and closed captions is that subtitles are usually developed before the release of the video in question. They are transcribed in time with the audio and saved accordingly. Captions, however, can be broadcasted live on television and are often being typed out and encoded as a show is being aired. In some cases, captions might even be placed in a different position on the screen, to prevent any obstruction. Subtitles, having been produced beforehand, cannot be moved in this way.
Closed captions, while useful, can also be divisive. Some viewers reportedly find them distracting and obstructive to their entertainment. Even though studies suggest that a continued use of closed captioning will not only make your brain accustomed to them but will also improve your literacy rate, there are those who just can’t get used to them.
Despite what some opinions might suggest, research indicates that Gen Z is more inclined to use closed captioning than any generation before them. For individuals with disabilities including Autism and ADHD, closed captions can improve both their focus and their retention of information. People with no disability also found them beneficial to their learning, with a majority opting to use them regularly.

Abstract
Human physical characteristics and their perception by the brain are under pressure by natural selection to optimize reproductive success. Men and women have different strategies to appear attractive and have different interests in identifying beauty in people. Nevertheless, men and women from all cultures agree on who is and who is not attractive, and throughout the world attractive people show greater acquisition of resources and greater reproductive success than others. The brain employs at least three modules, composed of interconnected brain regions, to judge facial attractiveness: one for identification, one for interpretation and one for valuing. Key elements that go into the judgment are age and health, as well as symmetry, averageness, face and body proportions, facial color and texture. These elements are all Costly Signals of reproductive fitness because they are difficult to fake. However, people deceive others using tricks such as coloring hair, cosmetics and clothing styles, while at the same time they also focus on detecting fakes. People may also deceive themselves, especially about their own attractiveness, and use self-signally actions to demonstrate to themselves their own true value. The neuroscience of beauty is best understood by considering the evolutionary pressures to maximize reproductive fitness.
Keywords: facial beauty, attractiveness, evolutionary biology, costly signals, cosmetics, deception, self-signaling
1. Introduction
Human nature includes a desire to be attractive, and historically much of the fine arts are depictions of human beauty. Much time, money and emotional energy are spent in improving our appearance to reach a goal of beauty. People feel better about themselves when they think they are attractive to others. We devote portions of our brains to evaluating characteristics of attractiveness that are remarkably similar among cultures. Our bodies are shaped not only for function but also to match the image of attractiveness to others.
The simple answer that “beauty is for attracting mates” is no longer sufficient to explain the wealth of data on human preferences for beauty. Attractiveness is part of our status ranking among our same-sex peers, and we actively deceive others and ourselves about our personal appearance.
This review is crafted to place the study of personal appearance and beauty in the context of evolutionary biology. This theoretical framework best explains the quirkiness, universality and unexpected behaviors of people striving to be attractive and seeking out beautiful people.
2. The Evolutionary Biology of Beauty
The principle of evolutionary biology is that when there is genetic variation within a population of a characteristic that improves the individual’s chance of survival and reproduction (sending its genes into several succeeding generations), that characteristic with the best improvement will be naturally selected over other forms and becomes more common within the population. Eventually that characteristic phenotype will become nearly universal, and the genetic variant producing the favored phenotype will become “fixed” in the population.
Some phenotypes improve an individual’s acquisition of food, such as running stamina or manual dexterity. However, those phenotypes that directly improve the chances of reproduction, such as attracting mates and obtaining help in raising children, are under even stronger selection pressure, since they directly influence the frequency with which those genes are passed to the next generation.
2.1. Reproductive Strategy
Men and women have different strategies for reproductive success that were honed during tens of thousands of prehistoric years. Women seek men for partners who will contribute material resources as well as good genes to their children, while men seek one or more female partners with good genes, some of whom they may provide with resources. The strategy of each sex includes advertising to potential mates, and competing members of the same sex, to demonstrate that he or she is valuable (reviewed in [1]). The display of these traits is called “attractiveness” or “beauty”.
2.2. Universality of Attractiveness Judgements
[...]
5.1. Costly Signals
The brain has evolved its focus on these features of attractiveness and beauty because not only are they reliable measures of health and reproductive fitness, but they are (or have been for most of our evolutionary history) difficult to fake. Such features that genuinely signal reproductive fitness are known as Costly Signals [72]. Costly Signals that are specific to one sex or the other are subject to strong sexual selection. One sex prefers a feature signaling reproductive fitness and chooses partners who have that feature. The next generation produces one sex that favor the Costly Signal and the other sex that displays it. This is called the Green Beard Effect, after the hypothetical example of two sets of genes that co-evolve, one set that produces a green beard in males and another set that prefers a green beard in females. This can lead to the run-away evolution of exaggerated features, such as extraordinarily large elk antlers or peacock feathers. The key element is that the Costly Signal must be biologically difficult to produce, or else fakers without the necessary reproductive fitness will display the feature and gain unwarranted mating opportunities.
Most if not all of the characteristics described here as signs of attractiveness and beauty are Costly Signals. They reflect healthy development, absence of disease, and display the level of sex hormones that reflect fertility. Human culture has added body ornaments and possessions to Costly Signals. These are additional signs of wealth and resource acquisition that also signal reproductive fitness, including decorative clothing and jewelry, lavish housing and luxury possessions.
5.2. Deception
Humans have also devised ways by which they deceive others as to their true reproductive fitness by faking Costly Signals.
[...]
6. Conclusions
Dr. Theodosius Dobzhansky, the famous geneticist, wrote in 1973 that “nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution”. Since the human form and the brain co-evolved in the 5 million years since our last common ancestor with the apes, we can say that nothing in beauty makes sense except in light of the brain. Natural selection favors individuals with greater reproductive fitness and also those who display signs of greater fitness, as well as those who can detect them.
The Costly Signals of fitness for humans include health, youth, and ideal proportions. The brain has evolved modules to perceive facial and body shapes, interpret their meaning, and then assign value—beautiful and attractive, or not. Since men and women have different reproductive strategies, and different sex hormones shape their bodies, the brain is tuned to those features driven by these gender-specific development patterns in reaching decisions about attractiveness. A key finding is that men and women of all cultures agree on which men and women are attractive and who are not.
People use cosmetics and surgical procedures to fake Costly Signals, while at the same time they are always on the lookout to detect cheaters. Deceivers are more convincing when they believe the lie themselves, and we have ample evidence of self-deception in beauty. In this fog of competition, people use self-signaling to indicate to themselves their own worth. None of this makes sense except in light of the neuroscience of beauty.

...He was the first specialist taken in this year's draft and is the NFL's highest drafted punter since Mitch Wishnowsky was chosen by the 49ers at No. 110 in 2019.
"There's not many punters that are drafted high these days," Taylor said during a Zoom call with Chicago reporters. "It's just really an absolute honor to be a Bear. I just can't really believe it to be honest. It's crazy."
Even crazier is that friends were texting Taylor that they wanted the Bears to pick him in the fourth round and he even joked with his girlfriend about the possibility.
"It's funny, my girlfriend is from Chicago," Taylor said. "I was like, 'Imagine the Bears use their pick at 122,' and then at 115 I just said it as a joke to my girlfriend. I was like, 'Only seven picks away.
VIDEO
Taylor didn't have much contact with the Bears during the pre-draft process.
"I only spoke to [special teams] coach [Richard] Hightower at the combine, and I felt like we really clicked," Taylor said. "He used to coach Mitch Wisnowski at the 49ers, and I really feel like I'm a similar kind of player."
Taylor attended Haileybury in Hertford, Australia, a boarding and day school for boys and girls ages 11-18. Having played Australian Rules Football, he contacted Prokick Australia, an organization that helps place players at U.S. colleges.
Taylor enrolled at Iowa in 2020 and eventually blossomed into an NFL prospect, thanks in part to the support and guidance he received from Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz and special teams coordinator LeVar Woods.
"When I first came over here, I was like, 'Oh, I'm just going to have fun and see what happens," Taylor said. "After a year or so, my coach said: 'You can really be something pretty special.' It wasn't really anything that I thought about too much. I'd always known that I had a big leg. I'm really just grateful for all the coaches, especially coach Ferentz and also coach Woods for really just letting me be me.
"I've had one pretty crazy journey, but it just really shows if you just put in the hard work, usually good things prevail."

Thanks, Tory Taylor, thanks for the intro. Bit more here:
While sorry to hear why you lost your paper route - that was silly - and while holding some sympathy for all those with any addiction, you may have missed the suggestion that all of Burkhardt's suffering could be a fiction. And while appreciative of hearing of your path to addiction, i've never heard anything like it before, i wouldn't think you would be in favor of book banning as Burkhardt obviously is.
Or was all of that post of yours satire.

brooklyn13, Yeah, you said it happened, and you say it never should have. Yet while you see Israel doing it you defend it.
"Who said it was ok, I said it happened and there was never any accountability. "
And yeah, you say that, yet while the highest court in the world, and the UN are trying to hold Israel accountable you say, hey what about Australia and their aborigines. And you say 'what about other past colonial powers.'
Even the US, while culpable, as is Australia, in the mess are struggling to bring peace.

"I can't imagine a world in which most people don't find you tiresome."
you have already been told the world finds Israel tiresome, and btw so do more see your world and your hypocrisy tiresome.
To quote a character on JAG, "I don't despise you, but i despise what you do."
brooklyn13, Has it ever occurred to you that many, if not virtually all, of the younger protesters you so arrogantly condemn are protesting against the war just because they see - and feel - the injustice of it all. Whatever happened to the two-state commitment of the West. The promise.
Fuck, even Vietnam war protests were claimed for a long time to never have any chance of changing policy. I doubt if any of the young protesting today believe they are trying to change policy. That's nonsense of yours.
And this:
"As far as I know, none of the protestors has been revealed to have given substantial sums of money to Gazans, none are going there to volunteer on medical teams or to deliver food or to, even, fight for their cause. Or very few. And while we've seen many ex-pat Ukrainians and Americans going to fight against Russia and we've seen many Israeli Americans and Americans going to fight against Hamas, the Hamas fan club is content to remain a theater piece.
P - So, what's the point, who benefits from these media oriented proceedings? I would venture a guess that it's part of a larger plan to create dissension among democrats to enable a Trump victory. By no impartial standards is this a genocide or is there apartheid in Israel (any worse than in America). These are ideas that attempt to be dog whistles on social media but are discounted by anyone with half a brain. (I mean, Genocide Joe? Who thinks that's clever?)"
again more rationalization nonsense from you. The protestors are uni kids and others who have a life and goddamn jobs, i guess. and you are saying they are not legit because they don't donate a lot of money, or don't go to Gaza. That's ridiculous. Sure there could be some, probably are who in their own minds are using the protests as an anti-Democrat effort, there are always agent provocateurs in every large protest. But shit, in saying what you said there you are demeaning and deriding all of the protestors. Your stance sounds more like an arrogant adult attitude than anything else.
The imbalance between numbers of fatalities and injuries and suffering of the two sides of Netanyahu's war against all Palestinians puts a nonsense, just more rationalization tag, to your
"The genocide I see is by the Hamas leaders who have become billionaires by stealing aid money from their people, starving them and depriving them of medical supplies, and are using those same people as shields in a war while their brave fighters hide underground in tunnels. "

Is it true or not? Israeli group FakeReporter fact checks while seeking shelter
October 26, 2023 9:00 AM ET

Achiya Schatz runs an organization in Israel called FakeReporter that authenticates images and videos that appear online in order to combat fake news. The group was founded three years ago. Before the war, it was focused on trying to help people who were targeted with online harassment for speaking out against corruption. Claire Harbage/NPR
Achiya Schatz walked into the kitchen and saw his mother-in-law standing there in tears.
Schatz, his pregnant partner, their toddler daughter, and two other Israeli families had fled the violence of the war, putting eleven under one roof at the home of his in-laws outside of Tel Aviv.
The house became a cacophony of screaming children, frantic phone calls and emergency Zoom meetings. Sometimes all three families are forced to seek shelter together from rocket attacks.
Yet what most rattled his mother-in-law were the unsettling images of children in cages.
"I asked her, 'what happened?' And she said I just saw a horrible video of babies in cages," Schatz said.

Not only did he immediately know that she was referring to deceptive footage, but the organization he runs, FakeReporter, was the first to show that the video portrayed something else entirely. The clip had been posted online months before Hamas attacked Israel, though the footage's exact origins remain the subject of online debate.
"This is a video that we refuted, " he told his mother-in-law. "It's a lie. It's fake."
Those words — "It's a lie. It's a fake"— are uttered quite a bit these days by Schatz and his associates ever since the Hamas-Israel war broke out, unleashing an informational war online.
