Mas,
Knowing that AMD will eventually launch the Barcelona, can you define a paper launch for us so when the time comes we can hold AMD to your standards?
Snow
Morrow,
I agree with you and Alan. AMD may be able to get a few hundred 2.8GHz and 3GHz SKUs for bragging rights (assuming Penryn launches at 3.33GHz). However, the majority of their SKUs will be <= 2.4GHz with a little volume at 2.6GHz. Expect AMD to talk up the almost non-existent SKUs (2.8 and 3.0 GHz if available).
Snow
Speaking of sand bagging, do you think Intel will launch Penryn at 3.33GHz? What if they launch with a 3.6GHz?
Snow
I anticipate AMD is going to play very "dirty" in 2007 because they're in a weak competitive position. Hopefully, the court takes notice of AMD's business practices.
Snow
AMD can say what ever it wants but Intel has the legal obligation to secure and protect the privacy of the the 1000 Intel employees named in the sealed file. If AMD wants to unseal it and parade it in front of the press, then 1000 Intel employees will have the right to sue AMD for violating their privacy rights. Expecting Duke to set me straight :)

Clarification - 72 Good looking, human, female virgins.
Snow
Forget earnings and market share, I want those 72 virgins!
Snow
Make that $2.2B for AMD.

What's a few hundred million between friends?
Snow
Just speculating on the speculation:
If AMAT bought AMD it would be a very, very, tricky integration. Here are some reasons why:
1. Intel is AMAT's largest customer, AMAT would essentially become Intel's largest customer and competitor. How do you manage that?
2. AMAT tests a lot of their new tools in Intel's development factories (RP1 and D1D) prior to releasing them to other customers (TSMC, TI, etc). They may loose this benefit.
3. Intel and AMAT collaborate heavily in developing new manufacturing processes. In other words, there are a ton of AMAT Field Service Engineers in D1C and D1D working side by side with people like Ronster. How will AMAT ensure that Intel's process development design doesn't get leaked to the AMD business units? Can you say huge lawsuit potential?
There are many others, but this would be very tricky for AMAT to manage because many of their current customers (including INTC) wouldn't want AMD having access to their process technology (tool selection, configuration, etc..)
Snow
LMAO, you missed your calling.
Snow
Sorry, it was on the second (next) page and I thought the two were related. They're not.
Snow
Ladies and gentlemen, for our comedy act tonight, we have Chipguy and Duke of URL.. Thanks for the laugh guys.
Snow
So it takes a water cooled Agena to come close to the air cooled 3.3GHz Penryn? I feel sorry for AMD.
Snow
ROFL, thanks for the laugh man!
Snow
AMD is executing itself flawlessly, it would seem, without any "divine" intervention.
WTF? I'm curious how you define "flawlessly." Do you mean overpromising, underproviding, and always late?
Snow
Mas,
You assume AMD and Intel are operating under the same expectations, they're not. The market expects AMD to beat Intel, when AMD does, their stock goes up.
On the other hand, the market expects Intel to grow revenue and net income. One way to do that is beat AMD but the market expects Intel to do more than just beat AMD. Thus all the "experiments' into other businesses.
Snow
Depends on timing. I've made money on Intel every year since 2001. I learned my lesson in 2000.
Snow
Dell has to do something to get rid of their dead inventory! :)
Snow
Yeah, when I think about what it would be like for AMD to be the number one chipmaker, I get flashbacks from Robocop and the OCP Corporation. Know what I mean?
Snow
Here are some questions to ponder: What if AMD were the number one CPU maker in the world? How would things be different from today?
Snow
Considering AMD's tactics in the market place, as a consumer, I'm not sure I would ever want AMD in a lead market position. As a market leader, Intel is and must be responsible for their actions. AMD, on the other hand, seems really slimy and I would hate to be at their mercy.
Snow
Duke,
You are a true source of entertainment, strange at times, yet still entertaining. :)
Snow
Never seen a more incestuous biased board.
ROFL, yes you have. You moderate one called the AMD board!
Snow
ZZZZZZZZZZ, someone wake me up when this discussion is over.
Snow
Mas,
I don't see anyone cheerleading in this thread. I simply see people poking holes in your claim that it's entirely Intel management's fault. I've already told you that you over-simplfied the problem and others are just reinforcing that fact. No cheerleading, we're just pointing out the errors in your claim.
Snow
Mas,
I think you're over-simplifying the situation. Yes, management is one variable in the equation but have you considered how CPU's have become a mature and common product today vs. when Grove was CEO? There are probably many other variables.
Snow
And to think that AMD marketed the idea that their platforms provided a better Vista experience... LOL Poetic Justice!
Snow
I'm too addicted to WOW to even consider any other games let alone a game console in addition to my PC.
Snow
Buying opportunity!
Snow
What does that mean...?
My initial thoughts are that AMD will fall back to the position they were in when Intel launched the first Pentium. They will be a follower. However, I haven't put much thought into this so take it for what it's worth.
Snow
Damn!!! My Antec Neo HE 550 would barely provide enough power to support the FX74 under full load. Ouch! To make a comparison, my PSU currently powers a C2D E6700, 2 hard drives, and 2 ATI Radeon XT 1900 XT's, and a number of other nominal power consuming components.
Snow
I also noticed Ashlee failed to mention the Penryn launch in 2H07.
Snow
Alan,
F15 converted to a sort test facility.
Snow
Wouter,
I've heard that Intel has a very aggressive depreciation schedule for their fabs...i.e. 4 years.
Snow
Thanks Windsock! I learned a lot from your post.
Snow
ROFL, tks for the laugh.
Snow
Money, meet Duke. He likes to sing for us :)
Snow
Nice, I've been thinking about buying too.
Snow
Smooth,
Agreed. Besides, most AMD investors are not risk averse. In other words if you want go with a low risk investment, you don't invest in AMD. The beta speaks for itself. There will be periods of great returns and periods of great losses when investing in AMD. Those who invest in AMD probably know this, if they don't, they're fools.
Snow
If Intel is able to launch a Penryn based Xeon in Q3, Mr. Richards may have to eat crow. I'm pretty sure he's comparing Barcelona to Woodcrest.
