You assume AMD and Intel are operating under the same expectations, they're not. The market expects AMD to beat Intel, when AMD does, their stock goes up.

On the other hand, the market expects Intel to grow revenue and net income. One way to do that is beat AMD but the market expects Intel to do more than just beat AMD. Thus all the "experiments' into other businesses.
