Chip Developers Thirsty for Microsoft's Corona
April 23, 2002
Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) tacked two more companies to its list graphics chip makers when it inked agreements with ATI Technologies Inc. and NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) Tuesday. The firms agreed to support the Redmond, Wash. software firm's new DirectX technologies, which make high-resolution video playback possible using the new Windows Media technology, code-named "Corona." Microsoft has created DirectX to enable video processing in hardware, alleviating the burden video places on the PC's central processing unit (CPU). The result? This can render video playback at HDTV resolutions as high as 1,080p, six times the resolution (number of pixels) of today's DVD-quality playback from a DVD player (480p). ATI and NVIDIA will embed this technology in their graphics chips and cards. Initially released in Windows XP, DirectX Video Acceleration provides a common interface for hardware and software developers to use for the acceleration of video processing routines. DXVA de-interlacing with ATI Radeon 8500 and NVIDIA's GeForce4 graphics hardware was on display last week at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2002 and is scheduled to be available to consumers this fall. One analyst approved of the deal. "The PC is entering a new realm as an entertainment device," said Steve Kleynhans, vice president at META Group Inc. "This development could serve as the catalyst that elevates the PC to a mainstream role in providing a high-quality home-theater experience." The deal signals the industry's continued acceptance of Corona. At NAB2002 a few weeks ago, video and audio production hardware and software developers, including Accom, Adobe, Avid, Creative Labs, Discreet, Drastic Technologies, Echo Audio, M-Audio/Midiman, Steinberg, Syntrillium and Winnov said they would support Corona in future products. In December 2001, major DVD player chipmakers pledged to add support over the next year for Corona audio and video. Microsoft will soon introduce two new professional audio and video codecs. The new Windows Media Audio Professional is the first codec to enable Web-based delivery of 6-channel surround sound with full-spectrum, full-resolution audio (24-bit/96kHz sampling). Corona is scheduled to be available in beta late this summer and is on track for final release by the end of this year.

"Corona" to Power the Third Generation of Streaming on the Web, Delivering Instant-On, Always-On Streaming and Bringing Home-Theater-Like Audio and Video Quality To Broadband Users
NEW YORK -- Dec. 11, 2001 -- In a keynote address today at Streaming Media East 2001, Will Poole, vice president of the Windows® Digital Media Division at Microsoft Corp., addressed the role of digital media in re-energizing the market for Web-based services and previewed the first third-generation streaming platform technologies that will be included in the next version of the Microsoft® Windows Media™ Technologies, code-named "Corona." Poole demonstrated how "Corona" dramatically improves Internet streaming by introducing Fast Stream, which gives an instant-on, always-on experience, bringing home-theater-like audio and video quality to broadband PC users. Far surpassing the capabilities of any other similar technology, "Corona" is poised to lead the third generation of streaming on the Web, which Poole defined to include broadcast-quality experiences for end users and enhanced profitability for the entire digital media ecosystem.
"The features of this new platform provide both an improved economic proposition for advertisers and capabilities that will move streaming truly into the mass market, such as TV-like responsiveness and great audio and video quality," said Larry Gerbrandt, chief content officer for Kagan World Media.
Microsoft also today announced that the first of the "Corona" technologies, Windows Media Services in Windows .NET Server, is immediately available for beta testing and is already delivering the most powerful streaming solution available today. The remaining "Corona" technologies, including new versions of Windows Media Player, Windows Media Audio and Video codecs, and Windows Media Encoder, as well as a new Windows Media Software Development Kit (SDK), are scheduled to be available for beta testing early next year.
"In addition to other ‘Corona’ capabilities, Microsoft is showing how Windows Media supports DVD- and HDTV-quality programs at vastly reduced data rates, setting the stage for new networked and personal digital media storage capabilities and markets," said Richard Doherty, director of research at The Envisioneering Group.
"For streaming on the Web to reach its full potential, it needs to break through today’s limitations and provide a true broadcast-quality experience for broadband users who expect instant results and outstanding video quality," Poole said. "Windows Media ‘Corona’ will deliver on this promise, and in so doing create profitable and cost-saving opportunities for companies looking to develop and deliver Web-based digital media services."
The following key "Corona" capabilities were previewed in today’s keynote address:
Fast Stream, which delivers an instant-on, always-on streaming experience for broadband users, effectively eliminating the ever-present buffering delays. Fast Stream also automatically optimizes the delivery of streaming audio and video to take advantage of the full bandwidth available to the user, which vastly reduces or eliminates the impact of congestion on the Web for broadband users.
Home-theater-like experiences. Building on the industry-leading Windows Media Audio and Video codecs, "Corona" introduces two new professional level audio and video codecs. The new Windows Media Audio Professional is the first codec to enable Web-based delivery of 6-channel surround sound with full-spectrum, full-resolution audio (24 bit/96 kHz sampling). A new version of the Windows Media Video codec provides a 20 percent efficiency boost compared with the previous version and now introduces the ability to provide HDTV-like video quality at file sizes half that of today’s DVDs, for local playback on the PC.
Improved economics. "Corona’s" new dynamic content programming capabilities, with server-side playlist support, enables real-time ad insertion and, when combined with Fast Stream, delivers the premier user experience for ad-driven streaming media business models. "Corona’s" advances in compression technology help lower bandwidth costs, and with twice the server scalability compared with the previous version, "Corona" answers the call for a cost-effective platform that can be used to build a profitable streaming business, or to use streaming to reduce costs of high-quality enterprise communication.
An extensible platform. "Corona" enables application developers to deliver exciting new products and services built on Windows Media Technologies via a state-of-the-art plug-in model for the player, server and encoder. A vastly improved software development kit will allow developers to easily incorporate digital media into their applications and solutions, using the programming languages with which they are already familiar. Overall, "Corona’s" flexibility and extensibility will provide the foundation for a new generation of client-side and server-side digital media solutions. More information about Windows Media Services in Windows .NET Server is available on the Web at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmedia/. Windows Media Services in Windows .NET Server is available for beta testing to subscribers of Microsoft MSDN® program.

SANTA MARIA, CA (OTCBB NEWS NETWORK), June 21, 2002—The OTCBB total volume has dried up in recent days. Only weeks ago it was approaching a billion shares on good days. It is currently down to around 300 million shares daily. In fact, the other OTC “exchange” called the Pink Sheets now has volume that rivals that of the OTCBB. What is going on? Is it just the summer doldrums, the same market woes that drive the bigger exchanges? Perhaps. Certainly that contributes to it. But it could be something else. Could the OTCBB be starting to shut itself down because of the new upcoming BBX exchange? Experts believe that roughly 2000 companies will not be able to qualify for the BBX listing standards. What will happen to the 2000 companies? They will fall to that other OTC venue called the Pink Sheets. Here is a primer on the Pink Sheets, as we realize there are lots of investors who know nothing about it.
Like the OTCBB the Pink Sheets is technically not an exchange, but rather an electronic bulletin board system for market makers to quote stock prices. The Pink Sheets got it's name from the old Pink colored pieces of paper that it used to use to quote stock prices before it became electronic in 2000. In fact, the Pink Sheets dates back almost 100 years, as it provided a venue for OTC stock prices long before there was a NASDAQ. For those of you new to trading, the word “OTC,” means over-the-counter (a word used to describe any stock that is not listed on a major stock exchange). In fact, even fully listed NASDAQ companies are technically OTC. So OTCBB and Pink Sheet listed companies are both OTC.
The OTCBB, owned and operated by NASDAQ, created in the early 1990s was in the right place at the right time. As the dotcom frenzy exploded by the late 1990s the OTCBB was the only online venue available for investors for stock quotes of small, speculative companies. The Pink Sheets, owned and operated by a company called Pink Sheets, LLC was never able to participate in the middle 1990's online trading frenzy because it was still not electronic and quotes were not available over the Internet. What good is a printed venue in an electronic age where investors need real time, instant quotes to gain the online advantage? By the year 2000, the Pink Sheets finally developed an electronic system for quoting in order to meet this demand. Pink Sheets stocks are purchased and sold the same way that OTCBB stocks are – through your broker. There is essentially no difference between the two systems. In fact, a market maker recently told us he feels the Pink Sheets is a better system because it dynamically updates, meaning the maker does not have to hit “refresh” in order to get the updated information.
Unfortunately, the Pink Sheets receives a bad PR wrap today because of their history. They should have changed the name of the system to something like Pink Sheets Over-the-Counter Bulletin Board (PS-OTCBB) or something similar. This may have helped prevent the perception problem, especially since the system is truly an OTC electronic bulletin board just like the OTCBB. Why did the Pink Sheets allow investors to believe that the Pink Sheets is somehow inferior to the OTCBB? The reality is this could not be further from the truth.
There are some differences in the companies perhaps, but not the trading systems. The image of the Pink Sheets has to do mostly with appearances rather than reality. One of the problems of the Pink Sheets is that financial websites do not yet publish the bid and ask price of the stock. They often quote the last price, using the words “other OTC” or “other.” Big deal. The Pink Sheets has its own quote system, complete with the bid and ask price. In addition, real time quotes, complete with bid and ask prices are currently available in many real time quote services like Mytrack.com. A source at the Pink Sheets even told us that in the 3rd or 4th quarter Pink Sheet bid and ask prices will be made available to the major financial portals like Yahoo, Quicken.com, etc. So it seems like the Pink Sheets is taking steps so that it is up and ready to fill in the gap left by the OTCBB.
So now that we have established that the OTCBB and Pink Sheets are essentially the same type of trading systems there are a few things to be aware of before you jump right in and start trading Pink Sheet stocks. There are no reporting requirements for Pink Sheet companies (up until 2 years ago the OTCBB had no reporting requirements). This means that the companies listed on the Pink Sheets are not required to post SEC filings. Sure there are lots of non-reporting companies. Some of these are foreign issuers who are not required to report US financials, like Russian conglomerate LukOil Oil Corp. (LUKOY), BAE systems (BAESY), formerly British Aerospace, Swiss giant Nestle SA (NSRGY), Wal Mart De Mexico SA (WMMVY), Swiss financial giant Zurich Financial (ZFSVY is not quoted electronically) and many others. Many Pink Sheet companies are also fully reporting. This is significant; as it means the fully reporting companies are essentially the Pink Sheet equivalent of current OTCBB stocks.
Hopefully that clears the record about the Pink Sheets and the stocks quoted there. So don’t avoid a stock just because it is listed on the Pink Sheets. Approach the stocks the same way you do any OTCBB stock, do your research and due diligence. Establish your investing criteria for the companies and then decide.
So with the OTCBB being dissolved where does this leave the Pink Sheets? The Pink Sheets will soon become an even more important venue than it is today. It has to step up to the plate and we believe it will

"THEY RULE"
business is your word, and respect.
Absolutely. And next to that is your network of connections. Arguably more important than the product itself.
For example, did you know that GM is only 2 steps away from Ford? Or that Coke and Pepsi are connected?
There is a great little web app that illustrates beautifully how big business is run by multi-tasking directors that sit on many boards.
It's called "THEY RULE" and can be found at:
http://theyrule.orgo.org/theyrule.html
It's based on a book by C. Wright Mills called "The Power Elite", written in '56. You can find excerpts at:
http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Book_Excerpts/PowerElite.html
Check out: "The Chief Executives."
I mention this because I firmly believe that the success or failure of EDIG is going to be based primarily on how well JC and crew manages to integrate themselves into the established power network of the broadcasting & music industry. Secure preloaded content via PJBs, DP with/for a Universal player - Composition Players... from artist and speciality markets.
The above web app I mentioned illustrates this beautifully, and may change your thinking about the reality of how American business and politics is run. Fascinating and sometimes scarry.
A great example is the Bill Gates chart.
Many people are perplexed that Microsoft dominates over Apple. His chart shows why.
It ain't because of computers.
While Jobs was creating "insanely great" computers, Gates was getting his directors network onto the boards of Fortune 100 companies.
Remember, it's a program that you can play with, not just static charts. Move stuff around. Build your own connections. See who's connected to who. Start with "LOAD MAP".
Fun!
And important stuff for investors to know.

Hollywood, Silicon Valley Near Deal on Digital TV
By Andy Sullivan
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Movie studios and consumer-electronics companies are close to reaching an agreement that would protect digital-television broadcasts from being copied and traded Napster-style over the Internet, negotiators said on Monday.
The group will likely report that most industry players agree that digital televisions, recordable DVDs and other devices should recognize a "broadcast flag" that would allow consumers to make personal copies but prevent them from distributing those copies online, said negotiators involved in the process.
Consumers could save digital broadcasts on DVDs, and transfer broadcasts for playback on different devices in the same house, they said. But they probably would not be able to e-mail an episode of "The Simpsons" to a friend, or make it available on a file-sharing network like Kazaa.
The agreement, if adopted by a standards-setting group on Wednesday, would knock down a major hurdle in the much-delayed transition to digital broadcasting and could serve as the basis for federal law.
It would also be a rare moment of harmony for Hollywood and Silicon Valley, which have clashed recently over whether devices such as computers and CD burners encourage piracy.
The Broadcast Protection Discussion Group, made up of representatives from major media companies, electronics manufacturers and high-tech companies like No. 1 chipmaker Intel Corp(NasdaqNM:INTC - News), was prepared late Monday to wrap up work on the issue after struggling with it since last November.
"We expect to have something done late today," said Robert Perry, a vice president of marketing at Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America(Tokyo:8058.T - News), who has served as one of three co-chairs of the group.
AGREEMENT COULD BREAK LOGJAM
The report will be taken up on Wednesday by the Copy Protection Working Group, a technical standards-setting body that has in the past arrived at common standards for DVDs.
The U.S. Congress or the Federal Communications Commission could use the group's conclusions as the basis for a new law that would prevent electronics manufacturers from making devices that do not conform, observers said.
The agreement could break the logjam between Silicon Valley and Hollywood that has slowed the adoption of digital television.
Media firms have been hesitant to embrace free, over-the-air digital broadcasts, worrying that perfect digital copies of shows like "Law and Order" would be subjected to the Internet-based bootlegging that has plagued the music industry since file-sharing programs such as Napster first emerged three years ago.
Electronics makers, for their part, worry that they would be forced to turn out DVD players and other devices laden with so many restrictions that nobody would want to buy them.
Substantial disagreements remain about the precise definitions of personal use, said negotiators, asking not to be quoted on the record. For example, the companies did not agree whether consumers would be allowed to send copies to their office computers, or whether recordable DVDs would have to be encrypted to prevent further duplication.
Joe Kraus, director of a consumer-rights group called Digitalconsumer.org, said that many tech companies were still not on board and planned to file dissenting comments along with the official report.
"The only consensus this group seems to be arriving at is that there is no consensus," Kraus said.

A lot was said here - 1. full solutions = highly advanced completed products.
2. inside and out = facilitating internal flash componets, ie., actel,ti,cirrius,sigmatel,sandisk,intel... actually it's the OEMs preference and our team of innovative minds to achieve the feature-sets required to do things like a Evolution MTV player or a MXP voicenav player...
But IMHO our patents on the mngt between internal flash and the file mngt of the external storage is where we may see edig shine... Managing the throput in CF slots and the various forms of secondary storage, beit SD, Microdrive, or DataPlay.
The only DataPlay device is a exchanger between pc and dp disk, its seems that every DP user will need one - id lay ods we were instermental in this ... remember diskgo hai- it functioned between several modes for DP.
I may be way off base, but didn't back in 1999 our first designs started with Sandisk, JUSTRI days, well that's philips camera n Toshiba CF, SD -we've had free rain on any medium up to dataplay. In 99 edig may have regarded cameras as small potatoes thinking ahead to legal portable flas devices. Sure rio, philips, olympus have also done it. But you got to remember 'Falk saying 'We'd rather take the chance of eventually working with them before we look at any infriengment of our flash patents.
drhunt may be onto something regarding DNG/Digitalway coming to us in concern over MPman's flash litigation over all build mp3 players - thus 'SigmaTel currently offers IC solutions that we or our OEM partners could incorporate into our flash-based designs.' today... edig is coming of age, and imho in a big way. Hey thats why the bashers are so good - Rio sees it coming... to take its Coke away.
mar4's response from Putnam -
We offer full solutions, based on several types of memory storage, inside and out; SigmaTel currently offers IC solutions that we or our OEM partners could incorporate into our flash-based designs.
Best regards,

SigmaTel, Inc. announces that by Fall 2002, the D-Major audio product line will overtake all competition and become the market-leading provider of audio decoders for MP3 flash players. With a solution that is feature-rich and low-cost, SigmaTel is currently in the design stage with four of the top six MP3 player makers
`Look for then to is kinda like our 'expect''
`````````````````````````````````````
from their site -
SigmaTel offers a wide range of mixed-signal integrated circuits, or IC's, that convert analog signals found in the physical world, such as music and voice, to the digital signals required by computer processors.
IMHO ` Their compitition is TexasInsturment DSPs and Cirrus SOCs - remember how Actel's FPGA's claimed to be in like 80% of all mp3 players... SigmaTel is another intigrated circuit builder that if, imho, were providing a better solution we would be working with them instead of TI/Actel - It says ther are working with 4 top makers... we could be one, but I doubt it, because it all boils down to programmability for feature-sets - and i didn't see video AAC,QDX - IBM/EMMS etc,. where firmware ends MOS begins... lol
