Turkey's nuclear projects exceed $70 billion
14:03, 15 July 2014 Tuesday
Turkey aims to build three nuclear power plants in its bid to diversify its energy sources.
Total cost of Turkey's nuclear power plant projects will exceed $70 billion by 2023, Turkish parliament's energy sub-commission head Halil Mazicioglu said on Tuesday.
"Our goal is to have both Akkuyu and Sinop nuclear power plants to be operational and a third one to be under construction by 2023," Mazicioglu told Anadolu Agency. "With the additional third project, the sum of Turkey's nuclear program will exceed $70 billion."
Several new legislations need to be introduced in order to restructure Turkey's nuclear field, including the creation of a "Nuclear Energy General Directorate" for coordinating the nuclear projects and preparing necessary infrastructure and programming.

IAEA Backs Nigeria Nuclear Plant
Chineme Okafor 04 Jul 2014
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) yesterday said Nigeria’s desire to build a nuclear power plant was capable of lifting its electricity supply base to a new level.
The Deputy Director-General, Technical Cooperation of IAEA, Dr. Kwaku Aning, disclosed this when he visited the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, in Abuja.
He said though complex, the desired nuclear power project was achievable.
Aning promised that the agency was ready to assist Nigeria in ensuring a smooth and adequate preparation for the construction of the project, adding that it was better to put in place measures that avert pollution than trying to clean up possible disasters.

Nuclear Rallies for Export-Import Bank
Thu, Jun 26 2014 10:23 AM A partisan fight over the United States' 80-year-old Export-Import Bank has drawn the nuclear industry into a debate over the institution's future.
The federal bank provides financing and credit insurance for transactions where foreign companies purchase American goods. Some conservatives characterize its services as an anti-competitive handout. While supporters argue that the bank's ability to fill gaps in private credit markets creates thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in business that would otherwise be lost to competitors abroad. nuclearstreet

The best assessment of the Lightbridge’s RTPI design vs. MOX came out in 2005. I highly recommend reading it.
Westinghouse: Program for Disposition of Weapons Grade Plutoniumin a Plutonium-Thorium Cycle
“In summary, based on the overall assessment of the risks and potential benefits of pursuing the RTPI concept, it is Westinghouse’s opinion that proceeding to the LTA stage is prudent. From the review that we have performed to date, it appears that the technology is well founded and has a good prospect for success based on our previous US experience and Russian experience with metal fuels. The true economics of this plutonium disposition approach compared to the MOX approach are likely to be favorable if existing facilities can be used with only the modifications necessary to accomplish the fabrication of the plutonium-thorium seed and blanket fuel.”

Robert H. Ihde [The-Missing-Link]?
Robert H. Ihde, Senior Vice President of Nuclear Technology of Thorium Power Ltd., since July 2008
Has anyone here noticed that Bob Ihde isn’t more prominently mentioned on ltbr.com? More specifically, since his introduction to the Advisory Board March 2008, and his appointment to Senior Vice President of Lightbridge Nuclear Technology in July 2008, I can’t find any mention of him? Anywhere?
Lightbridge used to have a profile for him on the website, right alongside the rest of the nuclear dream-team they’ve assembled. It disappeared when they updated their website in 2010. The section that his profile was under (Technical Advisory) http://www.ltbridge.com/leadership/technicaladvisory is gone from their home site.
Although, I found that you can still get to his old profile if you go directly through this link.

The reason I’m so intrigued is Mr. Ihde’s background. More specifically his history with B&W.
Backround: businessweek.com
“He played a significant part of his career at Babcock & Wilcox, where he held various management positions. While at Babcock & Wilcox, Mr. Ihde led the Nuclear Fuel Services Business Unit and led the formation of B&W Fuel Company, where he served as its President and was responsible for establishing license agreements with international partners and successfully implemented new fuel assembly designs as well as related fuel hardware and services”

It's an embarrassing fact that both World Wars, and in fact most conflicts to date, have been fought over the underlying problem of resource/energy scarcity. And these geniuses (literally), with the ambition of Peace-on-Earth, were duped into weaponizing the most energy *dense* (unintended pun) substances humanity has discovered.

I don't always love capitalism, but it's one of the only things that got these dolts to stop and think, "Gee, maybe ending humanity isn't exactly a brilliant business plan?". (palm->forehead)
As for Thorium, I believe it's resurgence in the nuclear conversation is proof that humanity is progressing past our cave man heritage. But to reverse the course of an entire industry that has incredibly complex design and political barriers (and no more military support) is not going to happen overnight or possibly in my lifetime.
