Fortunately, even though the hackers had managed to change my phone number address and email address in my online credit card account, the clowns at HSBC managed to stop the $5000 wire transfer out from the bank account that was fraudulently set up and had a $5000 balance transferred to it from my credit card Elroy.
Point being, knowing the bankers at the local branch saved me a lot of effort. HSBC's "world class service" is the worst. Their telephone customer service people are all based outside the country and not one of them speaks English well. A true nightmare. I spun my wheels trying to talk sense to therm, that is until I went to the local branch and they straightened things out for me.They knew me since I'd opened a few accounts with them last year. That helped a lot.
A downside to that Elroy is that anyone can open an account in your name and electronically sign it. They don't need your true SS number either.
I'll tell you a story about a recent HSBC bank hack that resulted in someone getting into my credit card account, doing a $5000 balance transfer opening an HSBC bank account with all phony info in my name, then trying unsuccessfully to wire the funds to somewhere else. Having changed all my contact info and login info on my credit card and leaving HSBC, who had a massive data breach and myself to clean up the mess.
Electronic banking my foot. If not for the fact that the bank officers knew me and worked diligently to repair the damage I still would have been behind the eight ball.
One other thing. NEVER NEVER do business with HSBC. They absolutely suck.
Agreed, SF. If you're talking about bond or CD yields as compared to inflation. Elroy does make a good point though.
Hi P/E low dividend rate. I like DUK though.
Don't ask me how I got it but had a sell order in the IRA account which executed yesterday at 16:14 for IBM at $148.25. Sold 1/2 position in IBM on a cost basis of $140.64. Ahh the miracle of dividend reinvesting. Yes.
On the other hand, bought CGC back at $40 on 6/21/19. Will hold till around $58. Optimistic aren't I.
In regular trading account added to NIO on 6/27/19 at $2.50. Cost basis still under water. $4.81.
Yes Nick, being heavily invested in dividend paying stocks I find that I really want to have stocks lower in price than my cost basis. Reason- Reducing cost basis, increasing dividend returns each and every quarter.
Counter to what I consider speculative cost averaging, once I'm receiving reinvested dividends into shares that cost me more than my cost basis, the dividends go to cash instead. Not to purchase stock at ever increasing prices. Great in any market. More money to reinvest with discretion, less exposure to market fluctuations.
Okay, so WMT for example which was purchased at 65.30 and now at 109 is an exception to this rule, and certainly MA which has had a stellar return costing me 15.08 per share is also an exception. As well as NFBK with a cost basis of 1.01 per share is an exception considering.
I still believe in reducing my exposure to winners though, taking my initial investment money off the table and keep my cost and exposure to those shares at zero. My outlook is better to play with their money than my own.
Patience when a stock like T falters and I have to make tough decisions adding at 29 and 30 to bring my cost basis in line with what I perceive is fair value. Patience when at best I'm 7% above in one portfolio and 6.8% below in another with T. That will inevitably repair itself and at that point those great dividends will be mine to do with as I please.
Patience, Nick, when I cost average an ADR like NIO to no avail, just waiting for the unjustified tRUMP inspired tariffs on the American people to relent and for short sellers to lose out in a big way.
Patience, Nick when I say to myself "Don't you dare chase that stock, let it come to you"
Patience, Nick.
Re-opened CGC at $40.
Have my eye on FLY and AYR...
Correct again, Elroy !
Opened ET @$14.00
I like an 8.43% dividend.
Yup, analysts will continue to be positive on a stock or sector till that stock or sector tanks. THEN they'll change their position.
Thanks Court. I'll check that out further. Didn't really see much reference to PFE on his board, the PFE board is of course chock full of stuff. But I will pose the question. I've read some may see this as a buying opportunity in PFE, others say the next step down would be $34.50 which would be very much too seriously close to me making a lot of zero $$$ on the stock.
When others are saying that the market is going full steam ahead with loads of up side that sends waves of caution through me. I'd rather lose on the top end than lose on the bottom. If ya know what I mean.
Actually, from its high I understand that it was around $46, and it's been trading in the $39 range.
I guess it's perspective. I'd not want to lose the 16 or so percent return I have on this due to my apathy.
Court, found this instead. Which is right on. Thanks for your help.

Thank you S.F. Any word on how to ban him? I've not done that before.
Thank you Court. Any comment or direction to another thread regarding STWD ?
"Nick, you find comments about crooks disturbing? Would the comments be more acceptable to you if the crooks were not of "a particular political party". Just curious, not willing to get in between Elroy and you about this."
- I told you I did not wish to get in the middle of discussions between you and Elroy, but you included me anyway.
So basically, Nick I said that political party DOESN'T mean anything. If you're a crook your a crook. You said however that Elroy was discussing just one political party, which you appeared to take exception to. I then questioned whether there was an example of criminal activity by a different political party member, which no one had an answer to. You seem to think that Elroy and I are frustrated by the political climate in this country. I can't speak for Elroy about the level of frustration that Elroy may or may not be experiencing, but I speaking for myself am not frustrated by this political climate. You then said something quite interesting in light of the commentary that occurred. You stated, and I paraphrase here that this would be your last political comment, if I was reading that statement correctly. So, Nick, I was not making a political comment and you apparently were.
Now back to business.
Apologies for my comments, but I think that politics do on occasion contribute to the markets.
Now please bar slaphtheswing the heck outa here. He's particularly annoying and quite abnormal. I'm surprised you haven't responded to that particular pain in the butt.
Opinions regarding STWD anyone ?
But what about PFE Court ? My concern is specifically for this stock, watching it deteriorate. More hype and talk to leverage drug makers to concede with lower prices or other government action surely not to be taken by this current administration, as they are so against any kind of regulation. Still scares the bejeebers out of me.
The only other exposure I have to health care stock is SBRA, and I'll cost average out of this with it's huge dividend and charted stock price drops. Also a minor position in Vanguards health care fund in one of my retirement accounts with them. Not performing as expected but still above water.
I wont renew with a "Real I.D." until it's mandated or necessitated Elroy. Don't travel much and the NY DMV doesn't require cell phone bills just utility bills and other I.D.
My friend just went and figured she'd get a real id. Well, though she had all the other ingredients she didn't have utility bills because they are in her husbands name. No utility bills no real id. Protecting America, my foot.
Nick, you find comments about crooks disturbing? Would the comments be more acceptable to you if the crooks were not of "a particular political party". Just curious, not willing to get in between Elroy and you about this.
Elroy's commentary and economic and stock market updates are spot on. It would be a big loss to us all if Elroy wasn't allowed to post here.
I'm very open minded Nick and would appreciate any other views on this subject. Perhaps there are instances which you or others could present regarding others in and out of other political parties. In business etc.
This whole thing about Jack Welch is very interesting, as I'm still a minor shareholder of beleaguered GE in my dividend reinvestment plan.
Always looking to add more to T, Nick.
Thinking 28-29 again. What say you oh sage one ?
Welcome to our non functional society Elroy !
Thank You once again Elroy for shining light on this subject. Thank God My pensions with The I.B.E.W and the City of New York are safe, highly regulated, and flush with cash as any respectable responsibly well run pension should be.
KMB chart went on to confirm its strength above 123. Nice move Nick. I think it may have more to go but I would wait to buy around 123 as long as it continues in this range.
Holding PFE long term and watching it deteriorate from 44 to 39 and change. Wondering if it's time to reduce or close. 4% dividend not much to speak of and my return is presently 16.86% on this one. Would hate to see that reduce further.
ANYONE FOLLOWING THIS ONE KINDLY PROVIDE SOME GUIDANCE. I PURCHASED THE STOCK AS CANDIDATE tRUMP was extolling the virtues of hammering the pharmaceutical companies, figuring that he'd never do this nor accomplish not much of anything during his reign.
Perhaps he will indeed inflict damage to another sector of the stock market.
WHAT SAY YOU ON PFE FOLKS ?
Been doing same, Nick. Question regarding STWD to anyone following the stock. Positive earnings report and at top of its 3 year chart. Question- Reduce? Close? or Add?
I'm partial to taking my 8%+ return and calling it a day.
OPINIONS would be very valuable at this point.
Good News Elroy !
You can be assured of that. The republiCONS will wipe out any government service they can. Including your Medicare, Nick.
Small dividend.
Thank You Elroy.
Good Morning !
Closed EPD on a stop loss at $29 at 7:50 last night. The return since the 11/06/18 purchase is around 8%. On an annual basis it would be closer to 16%.
I was originally waiting for prior to the next ex div date of 4/29 and shooting for a 9% return, but I'll take the 8% and not complain.
Buy back order in for $26.50.
As stated previously. Reducing stock holdings overall to cash for anticipated correction.
Waiting for the next shoe to drop. But no one expects the Spanish inquisition.
It's not politics, Nick, it's economics. Trickle down economics. Democrat or republican still the same when they make categorical catastrophic decisions. But I do believe it was during a republican presidency, yes, in fact under George Bush.
I didn't realize that trkyhntr was a non American immigrant come to this country to take advantage of us. Perhaps he or she was a commissar. Or perhaps one of the unwashed masses teeming to come to America from across distant oceans. I wonder if he/she's even legal? Either way he/she's myopic view of us as a nation and us as a people leaves much to their fantasy, not the realism we expect from one so verbally profuse.
When you're under foot of dictators telling you what's good for "the people" while they live another lifestyle entirely as despots I understand exactly why communism and they would be reviled.
Our nation, the U.S. is so far away from any discernable socialism that anyone making that correlation is naïve or crazy stupid or all of the 3. Just my opinion.
Which was it, Nick? A socialist or a communist country. Most first world countries including the U.S. have elements of "socialist" in them. AKA providing services to citizens of those countries. Communism to me denotes tyranny. The Maduro regime in Venezuela is a possible example of this. Many "iron curtain" eastern bloc countries way back when were also dictatorships under the guise of a communist system.
In fact I think giving up all government services, is exactly what that person should do. Perhaps they have, and live somewhere in the back woods, hunting for game, skinning furs and living off the land. But I doubt their ability to do so. Not that I would ever have a bad thing to say about them.
Greenspan is also responsible for one of the largest stock market debacles of all time and partially responsible for the most recent collapse of the U.S. economy when there were massive bailouts and foreclosures. Quite the resume. Additionally Greenspan can boast being one of the stewards of the "Great Recession". Perhaps you forgot about all of that. Or just maybe you had your head up somewhere....Perhaps. I'm not saying you did, but...
Yes, Elroy, how dare those American citizens get sick and cost us taxpayers our hard earned money! Those proletariat socialist dogs should all walk off a cliff! Better dead than red I always say.
Uh, don't remind me of 1999 Court. Nightmare tech bubble burst.
Furthermore Elroy, if the economy is so great, why are almost a million people applying for work at $15 an hour to Amazon. Yep, by Amazons own admission 850,000 good, hardworking patriotic American citizens looking for a paycheck !
Nice article Elroy. Yeah, I'm also tired of supporting these sleazebag leeches who suck off the American taxpayer for food stamps, and Medicaid, public housing, and all those other benefits they weasel out of us. Those socialist pigs !
You know the ones I'm talking about, Bezos, Walmart and all the rest of those blood suckers using our tax dollars to support their workers. When are they going to wise up and start pulling their own weight. They should pull themselves up by their boot straps and stop relying on us- good ole patriotic Americans for a hand out !
