Primer: Clean Coal

What is it?
Clean coal refers to an array of technologies that sharply reduce pollutant emissions from coal-burning power plants, which supply roughly one-half of all electricity in the US. In the 1980s and 1990s, efforts focused on reducing sulfur, nitrogen oxides and soot — which cause acid rain, damaging forest and watersheds.

The latest and perhaps biggest concern is greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, and that has presented the industry with its greatest engineering challenge yet.
Traditional coal combustion emits far more carbon than other fossil fuels. Thus, maintaining coal as an option for power generation (electricity), will require dramatically reducing these emissions. A breakthrough is critical to the long-term energy needs of the US, which is considered the "Saudi Arabia of coal." Coal represents some 90 percent of the nation's recoverable fossil fuels, with reserves sufficient for 200 years, at current rates of use.
What are the leading emerging technologies?
There are two leading approaches to meeting the challenge. The first is an advanced steam cycle technology, known as ultrasupercritical (USC) cycles. The other is integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology.
USC promises significant efficiency gains, which could reduce carbon emissions by about a third. The US, long a leader in advanced coal combustion technology, has 170 supercritical units in operation.
IGCC, which is still a few years from commercial deployment, promises a potential quantum leap, approaching zero-emissions. Full-deployment, however, depends on overcoming another technological challenge — not just the ability to capture carbon but also to safely dispose of it indefinitely underground, in a process known as sequestration. This is not expected to be commercially deployable until 2020.
The choice of technology is hardly academic. In planning for new base-load (constant) power plants, utility companies must choose plants with carbon capture capabilities or face steep future costs under anticipated new laws establishing a cost to carbon.
How do these technologies work?

Ultrasupercritical plants operate at significantly higher steam temperature and pressure to achieve a significant improvement in efficiency. The current aging fleet of conventional plants typically runs at roughly 35-percent efficiency; ultrasupercritical plants can operate at 47-percent efficiency (at 1100 degrees Fahrenheit), reducing the fuel needed and carbon emissions by roughly one-third. (Every one percent improvement in efficiency yields roughly two percent reduction in carbon emissions.)
IGCC involves two steps. First, coal is converted by gasification into a synthetic gas ("syngas") from which pollutants and particulates are chemically scrubbed, or removed, before the clean syngas is burned in a combustion turbine to generate electricity. In both steps waste heat, from the gasifier and the combustion turbine, is recovered and used to generate steam for additional electrical generation. IGCC uses less water and produces less waste, and its emissions are almost as low as natural gas combustion.
One critical drawback to current carbon capture methods is that they reduce plant efficiency by 25 to 34 percent. They are also costly — roughly $40 per ton of carbon. Added to the cost of transportation and current estimates of sequestration brings this more environmentally-friendly coal combustion in rough parity with the cost of other forms of renewable energy. For carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) to be economical, the International Energy Agency has calculated there needs to be a long-term minimum carbon cost of $53 per ton.
calibob,,,LMAO on that post
drink,,,,i can agree with you on production costs ,,,but about the bankruptcy i disagree,,,sometimes bankruptcy and layoffs are the best for the company because more money to do other things,,,im not saying that this will go anywhere but for you to say bankruptcy and badmouth about that your wrong,,,,

Three titles on the line at WEC 35

World Extreme Cagefighting welterweight champion Carlos Condit, lightweight titleholder Jamie Varner and light heavyweight kingpin Brian Stann will defend their respective belts at WEC 35 on Aug. 3 in Las Vegas.

One of the promotion's cornerstones, Condit (22-4, 4-0 WEC) will put his 170-pound title on the line against former middleweight Hiromitsu Miura.
Condit has been nothing short of sensational since he debuted with the WEC in January 2007. He has won all four of his matches there by submission — three of them in the first round ¹ against opponents with a cumulative record of 104-29-3. Condit will carry a seven-fight winning streak into the bout. The 23-year-old Albuquerque, N.M., native last competed at WEC 32 in February, when he coaxed a tapout from Carlo Prater with a first-round guillotine choke. Condit owns key victories against former Icon Sport middleweight champion Frank Trigg and UFC veterans Brock Larson, John Alessio and Brandon Melendez. Of his 22 career wins, 21 have come by knockout, technical knockout or submission.
Miura (9-4, 2-1 WEC), meanwhile, has posted back-to-back wins since his decision loss to Jason "Mayhem" Miller in May 2007. A veteran of the K-1, Pancrase and Deep promotions, the 26-year-old prefers standing and trading, as more than half of his wins have come by KO or TKO. Miura has not fought since he knocked out Blas Avena at WEC 33 in March but has won five of his past six bouts.
Meanwhile, Varner will defend the 155-pound crown for the first time against unbeaten Marcus Hicks.
Varner (14-2, 2-0 WEC), who turned pro at age 19, appears to be hitting his stride as a mixed martial artist but remains a somewhat obscure figure in global circles. He has lost only once, to Hermes Franca at UFC 62 in August 2006, in his last 14 fights. All but one of Varner's 14 career wins have come by knockout, technical knockout or submission. The confident 23-year-old Arizonan stopped former titleholder "Razor" Rob McCullough on strikes at WEC 32 in February to capture the lightweight belt.
His opponent has never experienced defeat. Hicks (8-0, 3-0 WEC) has finished all eight of his fights. He last appeared in March, when he steamrolled Ed Ratcliff in 1:42 at WEC 33. A former Golden Gloves boxing champion, the 32-year-old Texan once worked security for Wal-Mart.
In addition, Stann will make the first defense of his light heavyweight championship against Steve Cantwell, a man against whom he already holds a victory. He needed just 41 seconds to dispatch Cantwell at WEC 26 in March 2007.
A U.S. Marine, Stann (6-0, 5-0 WEC) last fought in March, when he captured the light heavyweight crown with a TKO win over Doug Marshall. Based out of Team Quest, Stann has never been pushed beyond one round and, at 27, has emerged as a potential centerpiece for the WEC promotion.
Unbeaten outside of his loss to Stann, the 21-year-old Cantwell (5-1, 2-1 WEC) has won back-to-back fights. He scored his latest conquest against Tim McKenzie at WEC 33 three months ago, as he needed only 2:13 to finish the well-traveled veteran with a guillotine choke. All five of Cantwell's victories have come by knockout, TKO or submission.
