Does Linux run on RISC processors?
Yes, in fact the new Dual G5 Xserve is being offered by Apple with the choice of a Linux OS as an option.
I've used Suse Linux (Based on Redhat) and Gentoo linux. Any Linux source can be recompiled under OS X because its BSD Unix.
Altaire4 .... Go AAPL !!!
Blue your being modest.
Do you think WMA should be supported inorder for iTunes/iPod to be successful ?
Altaire2_0
Roni, I stand corrected .... :-
Video on Demand
iTunes on Windows brings with it Quicktime and its codecs for video. This opens up a mucher bigger market for Apple. The delivery of on demand video content.
Its highly likely the next digital market will be the delivery and storage of compressed video. Whoever controls the standards for such a platform will have a major leg up in that market.
Do you think that Microsoft would concede such a market too Apple ?
The future standards for delivery of Video and multimedia on the web is at stake. I would be very surprised if Microsoft would allow Quicktime to dominate its platform.
Quicktime vs Windows Media Player
Lang, your ignoring the fact that Quicktime which is needed to run much of iLife and iTunes is in direct competition with Microsofts Windows Media 9 Suite of software. The future standards for delivery of Video and multimedia on the web is at stake. I would be very surprised if Microsoft would allow Quicktime to dominate its platform. I think you need to think this through ?
Blue Djinn could shed some light on this subject ?
H-Pod support for WMA ?
If the Microsoft WMA format is supported in the hPod then I wouldn't view this deal with HP to be as advantageous for Apple.
Microsoft still has the OS Advantage
Microsoft could then kill mac development for Office for X with VPC and It would all end up in litigation for an eternity. In the meantime any chance of acceptance in the corporate and business world for Apple hardware would be lost. Microsoft has gotten away with this tactic time and time again. Litigation against Microsoft doesn't work because by the time the appeals are exhausted they end up dominating the market they wanted.
The porting of iLife to windows would not be as easy as the iTunes software. iLife leverages the G4 and G5 processor architecture to a much greater extent than iTunes so the performance and technical challenges would be daunting.
If Apple ported iLife and it shipped pre-installed on 5 or 10 million PCs and then Microsoft tried to deliberately break it with a Windows update, that would be the best thing that could ever happen to Apple.
Yeah, that could happen ?
Does anybody really think that Microsoft would allow Apple to have that much influence over its platform ? How naive is that. With automatic software updates Microsoft could make a rivals product incompatible with the WinXP operating system.
Net/net they'll come out way ahead if they could port the entire iApp suite for Windows.
Kevin, What would your re-entry point be to snap up some more shares ?
Cheers ... To all those long on AAPL .... this is going to be a fun ride up.
HP Deal advances Quicktime Technology
linda your right that this is a major advance for AAPL but I would be careful because a good many people buying shares are not in it for the long haul. They have no brand loyalty and will try milking AAPL for as long as iPod and iTunes revenue are healthy. This HP deal is a good step in cementing Apple technology within the main stream Windows PeeCee user base. If Dell, Gateway, Toshiba and Sony follow HP's lead then Apple will be able to dominate the downloadable Music market. This also give Apples Quicktime an entry point into the larger PC market. Which could become an even larger market in the future. I don't expect that Dell will go this route but you never know.
AAPL looks superb to me. The break through 24 was a good sign, especially with the market being down today. This seems to be part of either a run up to earnings or people positioning in the stock long term, in view of the change in Apple's methods, or both. The deals with Pepsi, AOL and HP are significant changes and just the beginning. HP will bring in a lot of money to Apple, as time goes by. But it is a change in Apple's methods, an important change for the future, and it has to encourage long term positioning in the stock. I wish I'd bought more. I am looking for an entry point so I can add shares to my option position.
OT: SGI at 2.43 ? eom
As Zanny would say .... it's Happening !!! .... eom
What a Crock
Apple seeks dollars from former freebies
..... iLife 04 is Free with any new Apple system. Apple builds software to sell boxes and at $49.00 iLife is a steal.
HP news is Sweet !!!!
iTunes/iPod Strategy is turning AAPL into a growth company .... expect $28.00 a share real soon. Go AAPL !!!!
Go AAPL !!!
IMHO Apple will blow away estimates and $25.00 per share is very possible. The big question is can Apple grow its PC share ? The G5 XServes with Xgrid software is highly anticipated by the the scientific and engineering fields. This enterprise play if successful will help to drive share in the professional markets.
Approximately a quarter of the IT/IS market is starting to consider Apple as an enterprise solution. One quarter of the IS department I work for are running Apple systems versus half running Dell's with windows and the rest are running Linux on various types of hardware. New Apple hardware is starting to trickle into our organization in areas previously dominated by Dell Windows systems. I would love to celebrate this trend but I've been to busy fixing and patching Windows systems.
How much of this reflects changes in the larger marketplace is anyone's guess.
iBook vs Powerbooks
Recently recommended a 12" Powerbook over the iBook line to a colleague. He is very happy with his purchase. My experience with the iBooks have been mixed. Swapping out a hard disk is a slow and painful process. Does anybody own an iBook on the board and if so what do you think of this product line ?
Who ever controls the standard will control the price.eom
Competitive Advantage
Ron, Why should Apple enable its competition to expoit what Apple engineered ? Apple has created a profitable market for downloadable music.
Why doesn't Microsoft adopt mp4 AAC with Fairplay DRM?
Apple has the market advantage this time and all the other media players should follow Apples lead ..... just like Real has.
Its a dirty business ..... but setting and controlling standards is what makes for market advantage. All you have to do is look at Microsofts Cash Cow MS Office to see how controlling a standard gives you an advantage.
How to compete in technology today
Pinza, Based on new Windows users of both iPods and iTunes, Apples move to Mp4 with AAC was the right move. Apple was smart to leverage this new format and not support Windows Media format. The AAC sound format is significantly better than mp3 and WMF. The fact that real is embracing AAC is a reaction to Apple's success with the iTunes store and the AAC format.
Incidentally, Real is suing Microsoft on anti-competitive grounds. That is what happens to companies that fail to offer a product with a competitive advantage over the status quo. Real should have introduced AAC before Apple in order to stay competitive with Microsoft.
This is why Steve Jobs gets the big bucks; He helps create markets that didn't truly exist in a meaningful way. One of these days Jobs will hit the motherload again and I want to be in AAPL when that happens.
Apple should Acquire SUNW
Apple should consider using a portion of its cash horde into buying out Sun Microsystems. The new G5 XServes are going to do very well in the marketplace at the expense of Sun. I don't believe that Sun's Java OS (linux with Star Office) is going to make much headway in the current IT market. Apple could do a great job in leveraging the Java language and API to develop some awesome applications for OS X and linux. Developers and software can make or break a platform and OS X could use a larger development base.
OS X Linux Ports
Microsoft Office needs to be marginalized with apps like KOffice, OpenOffice and others in order to create competition in the Desktop Operating system market. This will help to put Microsoft on notice that they need to produce a quality OS thats affordable if they want to keep the desktop market.
With Mac OS X leveraging apps from both the Commercial and Opensource world it looks like Apple has the best of all worlds.

An “X”-Mas Carol
It is the day before the day before Christmas, 2003. At his desk at One Infinite Loop, STEVE JOBS is thumbing through a well-worn copy of O’Reilly’s superb “Learning UNIX for Mac OS X,” as a small group of programmers cautiously approach his desk ......

P.S. If you can afford it, Pick up some more AAPL shares under 20.00 a share. Next Year all of Apple's innovation will start to reap some big rewards.

OT: Medical evacuations from Iraq near 11,000
By Mark Benjamin
United Press International
Published 12/19/2003 3:30 PM
WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- The total number of wounded soldiers and medical evacuations from the war in Iraq is nearing 11,000, according to new Pentagon data provided in response to a request from United Press International.
The military has made 8,581 medical evacuations from Operation Iraqi Freedom for non-hostile causes in addition to the 2,273 wounded -- a total of 10,854, according to the new data. The Pentagon says that 457 troops have died.
The Pentagon's casualty update for Operation Iraqi Freedom listed on its Web site, however, does not reflect thousands of the evacuations.
It is a toll the country has not seen since Vietnam, said Aseneth Blackwell, former national president of Gold Star Wives of America, Inc., a support group for people who lose a spouse from war.
"It is staggering," said Blackwell.

OT: Has Dubbya made a safer America ?
Kurt based on some of your comments its sounds like you don't feel safer under the current administrations premptive approach to fighting terrorism ?
What does a Country or Administration do if terrorists, either foreign or domestic, are able to launch a successful biological or nuclear attack?
Don't you think that is an over reaction ?
What would you do to make this country safer; besides giving up your civil rights ?
Would you agree to an anti-ballistic treaty ?
I think that Bush's unilateral approach to fighting terrorism is bound to fail.
I think our traditional allies could help immensly in keeping America safer.
OT: Political Propoganda
Fabrications are not beyond either party or political camps. The Jessica Lynch stories, many of which where gross exaggerations and at times outright lies is a good example. Ms. Lynch as an honest individual has denied many of these exaggerations. I'm just as alarmed by the Republican propoganda machine. The Media Coverage of iraq has been controlled better than any other war in recent memory. I find that you sometimes need to access the British and Canadian news outfits if you want anything that resembles the truth. The vast majority of Americans have no idea how high the American casualties and wounded have been. If they did, the current administration wouldn't have a chance in h*ll of getting re-elected.
Bootz, AAPL is always under estimated by the Analysts.
Apple is going to blow away estimates. I can see it in the amount of new Apple systems entering my work place going to former Microsoft Windows only users. The iPod sales are much better thanks to excellent press. The AOL and Pepsi deals are going to attract alot of new customers.
ditto .. eom
OT: Fi, Have faith ... We're going to take our country back from these Zealots. Their weakness is Arrogance. They've been pushing legislation through Congress because they may never have this much control again after the next election.
Best Regards, Altaire4
QuickTime 6 Downloads Top 175 Million
The new QuickTime release 6.5, iTunes 4.2 with AOL and Cell Phone support is going to drive Apple into the mainstream. The iPod sales are going to be astonishing. Apple could very well Top their expected revenues by a wide margin. If Apple dips below 20 again I'm going to double my stake.
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2003/dec/18quicktime.html
OT: Thanks Fi, I've bookmarked that link.
It's always easier to point fingers after the fact.
Personally I feel that Negligence, Arrogance and Incompetence describes the current administration and I would add Corrupt and Sleazy to round out that description. The New Medicare Plan prevents the US Market from getting drugs at a fair price.
OT: 911 Revisited
Blue, I've read this account before. Having previous Air Force experience I find some of the protocol issues to be interesting. It is true that there are conflicting accounts of what had happened on that day. But, much of this spends an inordinate amount speculating on what Dubbya knew and when he knew it and how he reacted to the news. When you consider that the Second Tower was hit within less than Twenty minutes even if fighters had been dispatched sooner you realize that nothing could have prevented that disaster.
Stonewalling the commission however is a very unwise political decision that the current administration may regret later on. However, I believe we can learn how to prevent such attacks in the future by dissecting what protocols failed and when. I for one think the true facts will never completely emerge.
Louis ... If only the PeeCee masses could experience that kind of seamless integration. They would understand why Apple has such a die hard customer base. Sweet !!!! Let us know what you like best about your new system over the coming months.
OT: Your right in both your comments Roni.eom
OT Preventable ?
Blue, you know I'm I die hard supporter of Dean. But, I cannot agree with these wild assertions that 9/11 could have been prevented by the current administration without some hard facts to back this stuff up.
This could have happened on any administrations watch, because we have many intelligence organizations that do not share information with each other. Its all to easy to say what should have been done. Reporters love to drum up conspiracy theories that can never be proven or disproved, it makes for endless speculation and headlines.
Dubbya misled the American public for both political and monetary gain, thats enough to give him a one way ticket back to Crawford Texas.
$24.00 a share is more profitable
Linda, I would wait until the run up to Apple's next quarters numbers. It should approach $24.00 - $25.00 a share by then. $24.00 is the next resistance point beyond $21.00 a share .... if only AAPL could stay above that.
AAPL Prospects
AAPL still a good Mid/long term investment. Looks like Jobs iPod/iTunes market strategy is working considering the iPod sales. Now if they could only sell half as many new form factor iMac's ... coming early next year the growth prospects will become self evident.
The G5's are drool worthy High End systems that most IS professionals want but budgets are limiting their purchase.
OT: 24 Dead in Iraq Since Saddam Capture
Against the images of a bedraggled and helpless-looking Mr. Hussein printed in Iraqi newspapers and played endlessly on satellite television, the attacks also confronted Iraqis, as well as the American troops doing the fighting, with the question of just what kind of force is mounting the attacks.
"Saddam does not have the power to do these things," said a police lieutenant in Husseiniya, Ali Ismael, 25, his forehead bandaged and his shirt dotted with bloody specks from the blast there. "His ability is too weak. Last night we saw him in a hole."
Here's a revelation: Saddam not behind the coordinated attacks on US Troops. NO .... Weapons of Mass Destruction (Weapons of Mass Distraction)
