From 2006-IPTV, Streaming Movie Revenue Set to Explode, Says Insight Research
Friday April 21, 10:00 am ET 2006
BOONTON, N.J., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Streaming video and music distributed across the Internet or directly to a mobile handset is fast becoming a mainstream entertainment delivery vehicle that will generate more than $27 billion in network-derived and content-derived revenue into the US markets by 2011, according to a new market research study from The Insight Research Corporation. Streaming media refers to the transmission of digital audio and video files over an IP network or wireless network in real time or on-demand, while prohibiting users from storing the files locally.
Insight's market analysis study, "Streaming Media, IP TV, and Broadband Transport: Telecommunications Carriers and Entertainment Services 2006-2011," describes the technology and market forces underpinning the network-derived revenues generated from distributing streamed content across the public Internet, content distribution networks, cellular networks, or telco IP networks. The study also estimates the revenue from the various types of content-derived revenues, along with associated advertising revenue. The streaming market is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of nearly 32 percent over the next five years, driven by on-demand audio, on-demand video, as well as the accompanying advertising revenue.
"The US streaming media market has entered a growth phase, meaning it is experiencing realistic and sustainable growth," says Robert Rosenberg, Insight Research president. "The forecasts that we present are conservative and in line with current performance. If, however, per-stream costs drop faster then anticipated, we have quicker acceptance of IPTV, or improvements in 3G delivery take place faster than expected, it could blow the doors off of our forecasts, propelling this industry into explosive growth," Rosenberg continues.

IP Entertainment Starting To Rock
David Richards - Tuesday, 18 April 2006
Leading digital lifestyle research group Park & Associates claims that the recent announcement that Walt Disney will offer programs for free from their Website is a large step forward for the adoption of IP video delivery.
It is also a boost to the role that the home computer will play in aggregating and displaying entertainment content, the projected growth of multimedia networks, and a shift in advertising toward a more targeted, user-focused means of delivery.
The research group claims that the announcement immediately enhances the broadband-connected computer as an alternative entertainment hub in the home – further diminishing the hegemony of the traditional TV and set-top box pairing. Video entertainment is increasingly a personal experience, with one person filling the "two-foot experience" with simultaneous instant messaging, e-mailing, Web surfing, and video viewing. For people who suppose that consumers will find the home computer an inferior entertainment platform, they have clearly not witnessed a teenager "consume" a Media Center PC, time slicing between its many functions. These many capabilities, on the other hand, could take a large bite out of the time spent in front of the HDTV in the living room.
The fact that popular programming is available online immediately puts the broadband providers into the primetime program delivery business as users find yet another justification for their broadband subscriptions. Despite the great appeal of DVRs, the ability to call up one's favorite programs anytime without having previously recorded them gives consumers with even greater control. We certainly don't believe these developments will cool consumers' enthusiasm for the TV experience in the living room, but we do see that the cable companies and satellite providers will have to work hard to prevent further erosion of time logged on the couch.
Of course this announcement gives a nice lift to Microsoft's Media Center PC, Hewlett-Packard's push of the entertainment PC (ePC), and Intel's Viiv™ initiative. While we are still hesitant to predict a PC acting as a media server in every living room, the availability of compelling and high-quality video content from the Internet will serve as a driver for consumers to consider – at the very least – directly linking a multimedia PC platform to a digital television display to enhance the viewing experience.
Advertising as Infotainment
The ABC/Disney announcement further opens the door for an advertising model that should be highly palatable for consumers. The company will offer viewers a choice of advertising formats – traditional or "game-like." Targeting features will enrich the advertisements – the viewer will log in via the portal, enabling a middleware application that will take his or her viewer profile and position advertising the viewer is actually interested in watching. It stands to reason that the combination of highly qualified prospects and happy viewers will equal strong advertising revenues.
The success of Disney's experiment hinges on the satisfaction of both consumers and advertisers. Disney is trialing with fewer ad minutes per episode (down from 15 minutes per hour to only three minutes) and longer form (one minute in duration) to avoid audience fatigue. At the same time, however, the company can charge higher ad rates due to higher targetability and accountability for Internet-based ads than traditional broadcast ads.
The first two months of experiments will be crucial for building advertisers' confidence in this new advertising opportunity. If successful (depending on each advertiser's internal goal), we are likely to see steeper cuts on traditional TV ad spending from major advertisers from the automobile, food, pharmaceutical, and beverage industries. We don't know the expectations of advertisers but speculate that they will be happy if the demand exceeds the aggregate viewership of a couple of cable channels (2-3 million).
The Role of the Middleman
Walt Disney, the last major movie studio to start working with Movielink, has been looking to chart its own path into new media. Disney harbors some significant ambitions for controlling a large amount of IP content, and it views the migration to digital as its chance to really re-write the rules to its advantage. Its relationship with Moviebeam, video content sold on iTunes, and this most-recent announcement are all examples of how the company is seeking to establish a more direct relationship with consumers, cutting the middlemen out in the process, whether those middlemen are the cable or satellite TV providers, aggregators such as Google or Movielink, or their own affiliates.
Choices, Freedom, Control
Prior to 2006, as we were mulling the potential growth of broadband-delivered video services, we recognised that the video creators and owners would act with greater expediency to 1) get their compelling content to IP channels; and 2) think flexibly in terms of the business models applied to it. After all, leaders in the entertainment industry learned a painful lesson about what the impact of Net piracy can be to the music business, and the studios desired a more proactive approach and at least experiment with their own IP deployment models. Disney's foray into ad-supported IP content is just one of what we expect to be many similar announcements through the course of this year.
And, whether the "winning" model turns out to be $1.99 one-off downloads, a $15.99 subscription, a $20 download-to-own offering, or an ad-supported free view, one finding resonates most strongly with us. In our groundbreaking Global Digital Living™ research of approximately 10,000 consumers in 13 countries spanning North America, Western Europe, and Asia-Pacific nations, consumers told us that they place a higher premium on content services that provide them with more choice, flexibility, and convenience. And we believe that they will pay – either with their local currency or their eyeballs on advertisements – for such services. Either way, we'll learn much from Disney's experiment.
Preview: Bill Gates on the Future of IPTV
Says people will laugh at the TV we have today. Here’s what’s in store instead.
David Cotriss
Bill Gates' speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2007 hinted at some interesting possibilities that IPTV will offer in the future. He even went so far as to say that in 5 years, people will laugh at the TV we've had up to now. While the majority of TV watchers are not laughing yet, it just might happen eventually. Convergence is likely to be a driving force, as evidenced by the recent announcement at CES about the combined Xbox 360/IPTV console.
While the future looks bright with strong market growth, it may be a while before the truly innovative stuff happens and longtime habits change. “I have no doubt TV, as we know it today, will change dramatically, but it’s going to take a lot longer than 5 years for most people to really see a fundamental difference in how they watch TV,” said Jeff Heynen, directing analyst for broadband and IPTV at Infonetics Research. “The vast majority of people still receive traditional broadcast TV and still channel surf. Just because Microsoft and many other companies are making it much easier for you to choose video content based on your preferences doesn’t necessarily mean that these same people aren’t going to sit down in front of the TV without any particular preferences at all. IPTV and on-demand video won’t change that channel surfing behavior for some time. But in essence, TV is changing and will continue to change, because the Internet is forcing it to. But we won’t see a massive, dramatic change for another 8-10 years.”
Big Changes Ahead
While this may sound like the same old “rain on the parade” we’ve heard a million times before, the reality is that change is happening, and will happen more going forward, and that media companies must adapt. In his speech, Gates noted the ability to see just the news you want with more personalized ads and interactive educational content. Heynen notes that this is possible today. “Just look at TiVo and their integration of web-based content, as well as strategic ads placed during particular programs in which those particular products appear. Also, take a look at what Google Video is doing by aggregating videos from YouTube and other online video sites and then placing text ads based on the tags people use when uploading their videos.”
Custom targeted advertising, such as your neighbor seeing a different version of an ad for the same product, is a key area Heynen sees driving innovation down the road. Yet, as he noted, this raises some much more advanced possibilities, along with ethical issues. “You can then take this to an extreme and start applying it to politics and profiling based on party affiliation, for example. My concern with personalization of news and content is what I call ‘over-personalization.’ Who determines what is important for a community, a nation, a world to see and understand? What is shared news when you have your interests and I have mine? Newspapers served this purpose and, if they are indeed dying, who will do it?” This could be where future innovation hits a crossroads.
Convergence is a key area driving future innovation in IPTV, where all types of devices will be combined into one interactive platform. “I think the Xbox announcement is significant because it really shows how converged IPTV can be,” said Heynen. “Because the Internet will ultimately prove as popular a diversion and source of entertainment as TV, we will continue to see more convergence like this. The question is: how do you satisfy each individual family member’s content preferences? IPTV is a way to do it because it makes the delivery of various forms of content -- broadcast TV, VOD, online video, gaming, IM, VoIP -- all share the same transport medium. Once you’ve got the set-top device in place that can intuitively navigate all this content as individual silos, the next step -- and where IPTV holds its greatest potential -- is to mix, match, and combine services on the fly, based on user preferences.”
The Rights Problem
Before that kind of advanced innovation can happen, DRM (digital rights management) issues need to be solved, something Gates noted in his speech. While Microsoft includes a DRM component in its IPTV middleware, Heynen said it’s still a major issue for IPTV operators and content owners. “The content owners are still getting a handle on IPTV as a delivery mechanism and want to ensure that it is just as secure as traditional RF or DTT broadcasting. When content owners see IP, they immediately think Napster, BitTorrent, and millions of dollars in lost revenue due to the unlawful sharing of their content. So, service providers looking to secure content re-transmission deals with content owners have to get over that objection first and then prove they have the DRM tools in place to protect the content.”
On other future predictions, Heynen stated, “In Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asian-Pacific regions, we will see more hybrid DTV/IPTV deployments than pure IPTV, primarily to get around the DRM issue. Broadcast television will still be delivered over-the-air, with specialty channels and on-demand available via a broadband connection.” So when you unwrap that new Xbox console with IPTV capability, it will be the first step towards true convergence of everything into a single IPTV platform, and that’s where the future really lies.

Canadian David Loiseau front and centre on new Elite XC MMA circuit
Published: Friday, February 9, 2007 | 7:00 PM ET
Canadian Press: NEIL DAVIDSON
(CP) - A new mixed martial arts circuit debuts Saturday night as the EliteXC Destiny card takes place in Southaven, Miss., with Montreal middleweight David (The Crow) Loiseau on the card and Frank Shamrock-Renzo Gracie headlining.
Elite Xtreme Combat shows will air on Showtime in the U.S. and The Fight Network in Canada (Saturday, 10 p.m. ET).
In departures from the MMA norm, Elite is showing five undercard bouts for free over the Internet (www.ProElite.com, 7 p.m. ET). Plus there is a women's fight on the card, pitting Gina (Conviction) Carano against Julie Kedzie.
Elite XC president Gary Shaw, a veteran boxing promoter, expects a crowd of some 7,000 at the DeSoto Civic Center, home of the Central Hockey League's Memphis RiverKings, for the 10-fight card.
Shaw says a new player on the MMA scene can only help the sport.
"In the end the fan will be the winner," he said Friday from Southaven.
"It's like if you go to Burger King and that's your favourite, you shouldn't be upset that McDonald's is across the street. It's going to keep Burger King on its toes. . . . I just think it's an absolute win-win for the fans - and the fighters, because now they have somewhere else to go and sell their trade."
It's worked for Loiseau, who fought for the UFC title last March only to have his UFC contract cancelled one fight later.
Elite has a three-year deal with Showtime and Shaw expects to put on six cards this year, eight to 10 in 2008 and 10 to 14 in 2009.
Fighters will be signed to multiple-fight contracts, but Shaw says they will allowed to compete on other circuits as long as Elite approves their choice of opponents.
Asked if other organizations will free up their fighters in the same manner, Shaw replied: "Probably not, but I would hope so."
Gracie is coming off a Dec. 29 win in the International Fight League over Canadian Carlos Newton.
In other action, Loiseau takes on Joey Villasenor and hard-headed heavyweight Wesley (Cabbage) Correira meets Antonio Silva
The rules are the same as the UFC, although the action takes place in a round cage rather than the Octagon. The only difference is referees will issue a warning if fighters are inactive on the ground and then give them 15 seconds to get busy or else he'll stand them up.
Shaw says MMA is appealing to a generation that grew up with computers, the Internet and video games.
"This is like a live Mortal Kombat," he said.
Shaw says his wife is one of the many women who have been caught up in watching MMA.
"I do a lot of fights on TV and sometimes she doesn't even watch me," he said.
He also believes women's MMA will catch on, explaining both women on his card are easy on the eyes and "both can really fight."
"It could steal the show," he said.
"For men, who obviously like to look at pretty women, it's a win-win. And for women who like to be represented by women, this is a win-win."
Carano is the daughter of Glenn Carano, who was backup to Roger Staubach and Danny White on the Dallas Cowboys from 1977 to 1983. He also played in the USFL and later served on the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Shaw said he chose Southaven because he had promoted fights like Mike Tyson-Lennox Lewis in Memphis, just 15 minutes away. MMA is not sanctioned in Tennessee.
Commentary will be handled by Canadian Mauro Ranallo, a veteran of announcing Pride MMA shows, former pro wrestler Bill Goldberg and Jay Glazer, who works on Fox NFL broadcasts.
Notes: Elite's next card is slated for May 5. Shaw says Elite XC may hold a title fight either then or the card after ... UFC light-heavyweight Tito Ortiz is set to make an appearance in next Friday's episode of NUMB3RS on CBS. Ortiz plays an MMA fighter.

UFC 67 has its moments, but mainly sets stage for future MMA events
Neil Davidson, Canadian Press

LAS VEGAS (CP) - UFC 67 had its moments, and its share of talking points, but the mixed martial arts card's main goal was to set the table for bigger, better nights.
To nobody's surprise, Croatian heavyweight Mirko (Cro Cop) Filipovic and light-heavyweight Quinton (Rampage) Jackson opened their UFC accounts with wins. Both will no doubt soon figure prominently in UFC championship storylines.
Filipovic, who is a member of Croatia's parliament as well as a mixed martial arts star, knocked out Eddie Sanchez while Jackson stopped veteran Marvin (Beastman) Eastman.
The show drew 10,787, some 214 short of a sellout at the Mandalay Bay Event Center. While the gate was US$2.7 million, the lack of a sellout must be considered a disappointment given the timing on the eve of the Super Bowl - when the NFL championship was expected to bring 287,000 visitors to Vegas for the weekend.
Filipovic did little to endear himself to his new bosses by failing to show up for both the pre-and post-fight news conference. And his choice of entrance music, the signature tune from his former employer Pride Fighting Championships, was puzzling.
"Whatever fires you up, man," said UFC president Dana White, who approved the music. "If it's the Pride theme, go for it."
But Cro Cop, a 10-1 favourite, showed hints of his talent against a weak opponent, delighting the crowd with some flashy high kicks in his four minutes 33 seconds in the spotlight. Sanchez, 8-0 going into the fight, showed little other than the ability to throw wild punches and back-pedal.
Once heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia and Randy Couture face off next month at UFC 68, the Croatian will be waiting in the wings.
Jackson, meanwhile, made his mark after Saturday's fight. The 28-year-old from California is an charismatic quote machine with a personality as big as the rumble chain he wears around his neck.
UFC fans will love Jackson once they hear him talk. And the UFC loves him because his win over Chuck Liddell is the only loss that the Iceman has yet to avenge.
"I think he's going to be a huge star," White said of Jackson, "and we do this thing right, the fight between him and Chuck (Liddell) is going to be amazing,"
Jackson, a 7-1 pick, entered the ring baying like a werewolf.
Eastman, a former UNLV football player built like a fire hydrant, stood his ground until a series of hard uppercuts drove him to the ground in the second round. Jackson won by KO at 3:49 of the round, avenging an earlier loss to Eastman.
In truth, the 37-year-old Eastman was a perfect opponent for Jackson - easy to find and with limited firepower.
While the UFC hopes to visit Canada soon, sadly Canadian fans may not get to see Jackson. He acknowledged Saturday that he cannot get into Canada, the result of a run-in with the law nine years ago as a student - Jackson did not detail the offence but said he was just defending himself.
UFC 67 was supposed to offer a taste of Cro Cop and Rampage, with the main course being title defences by Canadian Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva. The two champions were slated to meet Matt Serra and Travis Lutter, winners of Season 4 of The Ultimate Fighter. But St. Pierre pulled out with a knee injury and Lutter failed to make the 185-pound middleweight limit.
Upsetting and disappointing were just two of the words White used when asked about Lutter's gaffe.
The Silva-Lutter fight went ahead as a non-title bout but any lustre it might have had went out the window after Lutter failed to make weight.
It was a lost opportunity for the UFC. The concept of having the Ultimate Fighter winner take on the champion was always a stretch, but the matchup of jiu-jitsu ace Lutter against the hard-hitting Silva had possibilities. And the fight itself lived up to that promise. Lutter took Silva down, the Brazilian survived to get back up and then gave Lutter a taste of his own medicine, locking in a triangle choke and hammering the challenger with elbows to the head until he tapped out.
In the end, no one really cared, however.
It was perhaps a lost opportunity too for Canadian Patrick Cote despite his workmanlike win over Scott (Hands of Steel) Smith.
Cote played it safe but won a unanimous decision.
The 26-year-old middleweight from Quebec City badly needed a victory. He was 0-4 in the UFC coming into the Smith fight, although had put up a good showing in three of the four losses.
"My first big win in the UFC, finally," Cote said in the ring after the fight.
The Cote fight drew boos, which White said were warranted.
"I was very disappointed in that fight," he said later. "That fight sucked."
"Neither guy pressed the action, it looked like neither guy wanted it," he added.
In a scary-short bout destined to become part of a highlight reel, middleweight Terry Martin stopped veteran Jorge Rivera in just 14 seconds. El Conquistador tried a high kick, only to have Martin catch his leg under his armpit. Martin then dropped Rivera with a right to the temple and thumped him in the face three more times for good measure before referee Herb Dean intervened.
A dazed Rivera was in dreamland, hanging onto Dean as Martin celebrated.
In another lightning-fast ugly finish, lightweight Roger Huerta appeared to use a knee to the head to subdue John Halverson and then hit the face-down fighter some 15 more times before the referee put a halt to the carnage at just 19 seconds. Huerta later said he kneed him in the shoulder rather than the head, which is illegal when an opponent is on his knees.
A Hispanic, Huerta will no doubt lead the UFC's planned charge into Mexico. The UFC hopes to pave the way with a Mexican version of The Ultimate Fighter TV show.
Another fighter to watch is Brazilian light-heavyweight Lyoto Machida, who used his UFC debut to outclass Sam (The Alaskan Assassin) Hoger en route to a unanimous decision. Machida's resume includes wins over Rich Franklin, B.J. Penn and Stephan Bonnar.
"He looked great tonight," White said of Machida.
Frank Edgar defeated Tyson Griffin by decision in all-an action matchup of unbeaten lightweights that White called the fight of the night. Edgar survived a nasty leg submission hold late in the fight to get the win.
Notes: White says the UFC is looking at doing another fight card for the military, this time on an aircraft carrier . . . The UFC has announced UFC 69: Shootout on April 7 in Houston with St. Pierre fighting Serra in the main event. That's assuming the Canadian gets a clean bill of health when he visits a specialist this week. Diego Sanchez will fight Josh Koscheck on the undercard. . . . White says the UFC will visit Japan "very soon" as part of its plan of "global domination." . . . White also says Season 5 of The Ultimate Fighter, currently in production, is shaping up nicely with a recent fight the best in the show's history.

There is a rerun of the IFL fight show on Oxygen channel, it is the Janice Dickinson Model show. It is on right now.
I was watching Janice Dickinson show last night and it was all about MMA (forgive me if I use wrong initials), but anyway it was all about Ultimate Fighting. There was 75,000 fans there. I don't know for 100% sure if everything in reality shows are real, but that sure looked real. It sure looks like the upcoming thing....:o}
What do I know....invested in BKMP, at least it is very visible and looks exciting to others.

Redfox-Wash Sale
What does it Mean? An illegal transaction an investor makes by simultaneously buying and selling a security through two different brokers, thereby creating the illusion of activity. Investors do this to try and recognize a tax loss without actually changing their position.
The effectiveness of this strategy has been greatly diminished with the implementation of the IRS 30-day wash rule, where a taxpayer cannot recognize a loss on an investment if that investment was purchased within 30 days of sale (before or after sale).
Wash-Sale Rule
What does it Mean? An Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rule prohibiting a taxpayer from claiming a loss on the sale of an investment when the same investment was purchased within 30 days before or after the sale date. Also know as the "30-day wash-sale rule".
This rule was imposed to crack down on taxpayers trying to get a tax reduction from a wash sale.

UFC 68: THE UPRISING features current Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia, and former UFC Champions Rich Franklin and Matt Hughes.
Sylvia ( 25-2-0 ), fighting out of Davenport, Iowa, is the UFC Heavyweight Champion. He first stormed into the UFC defeating “Cabbage” Correira in his first fight and knocking out Ricco Rodriguez in his second fight to become the champion. Following his knock out of Gan McGee to defend the title, Sylvia relinquished his belt when the Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended his license after he tested positive for an anabolic agent. He then fought Frank Mir for the vacant title at UFC 48 and suffered multiple breaks in his arm from a Mir armbar. After recovering, he returned at UFC 51 fighting Andrei Arlovski only to suffer another setback as he was forced to tap out in the first round due to an Achilles lock. At UFC 54 he returned to his winning ways with a devastating head kick knockout over Tra Telligman, followed by a unanimous decision victory over Assuerio Silva at Ultimate Fight Night™ ( 1/16/06 ). Sylvia faced UFC World Heavyweight Champion Arlovski again at UFC 59 and defeated him by a devastating first round knockout. He followed that up with another win, a decision over Arlovski at UFC 61 ( 7/8/06 ), and a unanimous decision over the devastating challenger Jeff Monson at UFC 65. Sylvia is ready to take on anyone the UFC puts in front of him and defend his belt a third time at UFC 68.
Fighting out of Cincinnati, Ohio, Rich Franklin ( 22-2-0 ) is an extremely well-rounded fighter possessing great striking and submission skills. He fought most of his career as a light heavyweight before moving to the middleweight division. At UFC 53, he knocked out UFC champion Evan Tanner to capture the middleweight crown. He made his first title defense against Nate Quarry at UFC 56 winning by first round KO and his second defense against Canadian David Loiseau at UFC 58, winning by decision after dominating “The Crow” through all five championship rounds. He faced Anderson Silva in his third UFC title defense, but was KOd by the Brazilian in the first round. Eager to get back into the Octagon, and in front of a home state crowd, Franklin is hot on the trail to taking back the middleweight crown.
Matt Hughes, with an incredible 42-5 record, was the longest reigning champion ever in the history of the UFC. He started fighting in 1999, at UFC 22, and spent two years climbing his way up the division. At UFC 34 ( 11/02/01 ) he won the UFC Welterweight Championship by defeating Carlos Newton by KO. From there, he won five consecutive fights, holding the title for three years before losing it to BJ Penn at UFC 46 ( 1/31/04 ), succumbing to a rear naked choke at 4:39 of the first round. He regained the vacant welterweight crown at UFC 50 ( 10/22/04 ) by stopping Georges St. Pierre with an arm bar at 4:59 of the first round, and defended his title at UFC 52 ( 4/16/06 ) against Frank Trigg, winning by a rear naked choke. He fought Joe Riggs at UFC 56 ( 11/19/05 ) in a non-championship bout and submitted him by Kimura at 3:28 of the first round, then followed that up with a third round TKO over BJ Penn at UFC 63. Hughes met St. Pierre again at UFC 65, this time losing to the Canadian contender by second round TKO. He is determined to get back in the Octagon and score the first step toward reclaiming his title and his reign in the UFC welterweight division.
More information about UFC 68: THE UPRISING will be announced in the near future. All bouts are subject to change.

UFC is becoming a 400 lb gorilla which looks to Saturday’s Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz title bout in Las Vegas to end a blockbuster year for MMA.
The Chuck Liddell v Tito Ortiz 2 pay per view fight, with UFC officials hoping for a record MMA 1.2 million pay per view buys, will also set up the new year 2007 to see the mixed martial arts circuit expand.
Dana White, President of UFC, and the UFC pounce when they see weaknesses in the competition. The Ultimate Fighting Championship has been busy, rearranging the MMA landscape while repositioning itself to take advantage of the sport’s incredible growth.
World Fighting Alliance was purchased by UFC, snapping up its fighters in a purchase that will see the rival WFA organization stop.
UFC also bought the World Extreme Cagefighting, WEC, circuit.
Pride Fighting, Japan-based mixed martial arts, reportedly offering a contract to hard-hitting Croatian star Mirko, Cro Cop, Filipovic.
The WFA buyout brings Quintin (Rampage) Jackson back into the UFC and provides the organization with another top bill opponent for Liddell. “Rampage” Jackson is the only loss the Iceman has yet to avenge.
“The main score in that whole deal was Quintin Jackson,” White said of the WFA acquisition.
The UFC received several good fighters out of the deal including (Razor) Rob McCullough, Heath Herring, Toronto-born Ivan Salaverry, and Urijah Faber.
The rival International Fight League is also available to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
“We bought the WFA for the contracts. We’re going to take the WEC to a whole new level, including television. Soon the WEC will be No. 2.”
The UFC went after the WEC because of Dana’s vision for it. He liked it and wanted it and wants to see what he can make of it.
The WEC be a separate entity, with its own fighters.
The hugely successful Ultimate Fighter reality TV show, about to film its fifth season, has increased the attention of this sport. The Ultimate Fighting Championship organization now needs more places to showcase its growing roster of mixed martial arts fighters, both its own and those acquired in the new deals, both in the ring and on tv. Red turns to green: UFC capturing big bucks
With the popularity of mixed martial arts, a combination of karate, judo, boxing and wrestling, seemingly growing by the day, the activity is gaining a foothold in the sports market place.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship bout Saturday in Las Vegas between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz (UFC 66) is expected by UFC officials to draw 1.2 million viewers on pay per view — at $39.95 a pop. That would be a record for mixed martial arts and would be the most broadly watched pay-per-view broadcast since the 2002 boxing match between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson.

"If they can get 1 million viewers at $40 a person, that conveys a real interest and legitimacy in the sport. We still won't know if this is just a fad or if it has legs, but that will put it more on the map in terms of national scale," said Marc Ganis, president of Sportscorp, a Chicago-based sports business consulting firm.
Lee Berke, president of LHB Sports, a TV sports consulting firm in Scarsdale, NY, was even more optimistic. "This has the potential to become the boxing for a new generation. There are very few sports on pay per view that can generate that level of subscriptions. This seems to be unlocking that opportunity. The only others that come to mind are professional wrestling and boxing."
Mixed martial arts has come a long way from its bare-knuckle roots. While violence still plays a central role, the sport has toned down and slicked up to attract a wider audience and mainstream corporate sponsors.
The strategy has paid off. The February UFC fight with Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture at the MGM in Las Vegas produced $3.4 million in gate revenue, thanks to a paid attendance of 10,301. While top-notch boxing dwarfs that output with gate revenue as high $15 million, clearly the sport is growing traction.
The number of TV viewers is rising as well. The first bout between Ortiz and Liddell in April 2004 chalked up about 105,000 buys on pay per view, which was deemed outstanding at the time.
Early last year, The Ultimate Fighter reality show debuted on Spike TV, which is part of Viacom's MTV Networks. Spike's broadcast of the two-hour UFC fight card in October of this year drew an average of 4.2 million viewers, including 1.6 million in the coveted male 18-34 demographic. UFC topped Game 1 of the Tigers-A's ALCS showdown in that demo by 500,000 viewers.

Spike, with its core audience of young men with a thirst for action, is a perfect medium for mixed martial arts, says John Korff, head of New York City-based Korff Enterprises, which has organized triathlons, tennis and golf events. "Spike is probably as close as they're going to come to the demographic they're trying to reach without costing a fortune. It's not like you're going there to see My Friend Flicka there."
And Korff believes UFC is on the right track with its pay-per-view events as well. "They can probably make more money broadcasting on pay per view," he said. "It's not like you will get a whole lot of converts for mixed martial arts. If you're a fan you know who you are. You're not going to get a mother clicking through the dial to see if she can watch Leave it to Beaver, Ice Capades or UFC. You probably have high testosterone 19-year-olds eating their 93rd Twinkie and drinking Red Bull out the yin yang. That's your audience."
While some may question whether mixed martial arts is truly a sport, Korff isn't one of them. "If they get 1 million viewers, whether they call themselves a sport or an ATM machine, they're doing something right," he said. "ESPN is broadcasting poker. I don't know if that's a sport, but it makes money. If a guy's out there sweating and getting beat up, it sounds like a sport to me."

Korff noted that the idea of what constitutes a legitimate sport has changed greatly over the last 20 years. "We started with baseball, football and basketball, and then we had the proliferation of new activities, which some would call activities, and others would call sports," he said. "A few years ago, no one would have thought that the X Games were legitimate, and now half of those events are in the Olympics."
Korff doesn't see mixed martial arts as too dissimilar to NFL football. "This is just another offshoot of a violent sport. If we saw what some of the guys in the NFL do without their helmets on, I bet there are a fair number of fingers being stuck in places they don't belong. This isn't far from that."
To be sure, the idea of football is to outscore your opponent, while in mixed martial arts, the winner is the only man left standing. "In football, violence is incidental to the ultimate goal," Ganis said. "In the UFC, violence is the ultimate goal."
Of course, many young men (and some women too) are attracted to violence. "The young males and females who watch Spike are prone to want violence," Ganis said. "They have grown up with animated violence in video games and staged violence in wrestling entertainment. This is the real thing."
For the parents of these youngsters, on the other hand, the appeal of violence doesn't always have such a positive note. "A lot of them would agree that it's not a great commentary on our culture," Ganis acknowledged.
For a generation weaned on the internet, mixed martial arts offers more than a vicarious thrill of violence, said Kathleen Davis, president of Fort Lauderdale-based Sports Management Research Institute. "Fringe sports, whether it's rock climbing, para-sailing, paint ball or mixed martial arts, provide an interesting way for people to add entertainment to their leisure time," she said. "Social interaction is limited on the internet. People are looking for more excitement and socializing opportunities."
But mixed martial arts has the potential to be a lot more than a fringe sport, said Paul Swangard, director of the University of Oregon's sports marketing center. "They've found themselves in an opportunity where the main competition — boxing — is a vulnerable sport that targets a similar audience," he said. "They are offering something that's getting people to switch over. It's a statement to boxing that it doesn't own anything in terms of the market."

Alex Marvez's weekly look at professional wrestling
By ALEX MARVEZ
Scripps Howard News Service

Chuck Liddell is looking forward to making Tito Ortiz into ground chuck on Saturday night's Ultimate Fighting Championship 66 pay-per-view show.
He will defend his UFC light-heavyweight championship against Ortiz in a match expected to draw the largest domestic pay-per-view audience of the year for any fighting-themed sport, including boxing and pro wrestling. Some projections are calling for more than one million orders based on the success of the promotion's recent cards, plus the live gate at the sold-out MGM Grand in Las Vegas will top $4 million.
But even with all the pre-show hype surrounding Liddell, the Mohawked fighter nicknamed The Iceman guaranteed he is staying cool. Liddell credits his long-time relationship with trainer John Handleman and being surrounded by many of the same sparring partners from his early days in mixed martial arts fighting as helping to keep him grounded.
"I look at the attention and the money as something that comes along with having a job I love to do," Liddell said last Friday during a telephone interview. "Whether it's good or bad, it's part of the job. I don't thrive on the attention and all that stuff, but I don't let it get to me either."
As UFC's visibility has increased, so has Liddell's profile. A business and accounting major from Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo, Liddell was a four-year member of his college wrestling team while earning his undergraduate degree.
Liddell, 37, had his first UFC bout in 1998 and gradually climbed up the ranks thanks to his devastating striking ability.
Liddell won his first UFC championship in 2005 by defeating Randy Couture, who had beaten him for the belt almost two years earlier. En route to capturing the title, Liddell scored a second-round knockout victory over Ortiz on the UFC 47 pay-per-view show in April 2004.
Ortiz has won five consecutive fights since, but Liddell said he is anxious to once again face the "Huntington Beach Bad Boy."
"I'm going to come after him," said Liddell, who has won 12 of his 19 MMA fights by knockout. "I don't think I've changed much of my game plan from the first time. I think I've improved. He's improved his game, but his style is still the same so the fight doesn't change.
"I feel great and this is the best shape I've been in. One of the things I've concentrated on is him trying to take the long way by hanging in there trying to get me tired. I'll be ready to go for five straight rounds if I have to, but I don't think he'll survive that many with me."
One of the few fighters that survived Liddell's onslaught is Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, who defeated him via technical knockout in November 2003.
Of Liddell's three career MMA losses, the one to Jackson is the only one he hasn't avenged.
If he defeats Ortiz, Liddell could have that chance with UFC recently purchasing Jackson's contract from a defunct MMA promotion.
"I'm excited about that," said Liddell, who has won all six of his bouts since losing to Jackson. "I want to keep doing this as long as my body lets me. When I can't bang hard and get ready for fights, that's when I'll hang it up.
"Right now, I don't see that happening any time soon. I'm hoping to fight for two or three more years at least. We'll see."

Not only that but they all knew Iceman....Happy New Year!!
From 3 different parts of the world came the feedback to me this weekend. These customers do not know about BKMP or that I own any stock in a fight stock. They and their buddy's (all men) said the same thing that their favorite sport was Ultimate Fighting, still somewhat undergroung, and that it is the fastest growing sport in the world. It is replacing boxing as a favorite.

The UFC is on the verge of its biggest announcement in front of its biggest audience.
Reports and rumors of Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic — the PRIDE FC 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix Champion — joining the UFC have been downright draining for the past month.
Earlier this week, however, it became rather evident that the superstar heavyweight will sign a UFC contract (to read the posts click here and here). Now, we’re receiving even more good news from FightNetwork.com.
Here’s the latest update on the Cro Cop to the UFC saga:
Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) executive director Keith Kizer confirmed today that his agency has filed a petition with U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services seeking approval for Cro Cop to compete in UFC 67 on February 3. The UFC has yet to request NSAC approval for a potential opponent.
Dave Meltzer from WrestlingObserver.com has also confirmed that Cro Cop is in Las Vegas. And, I don’t think he flew all the way from Croatia to play a little Texas Hold ‘Em.
I’ll contain my zeal and thoughts until the moment of truth later on tonight.

Marcio “Pe de Pano” Cruz — $5,000 / $5,000 win bonus
Do you think “Pe de Pano” also gets a kick in the nuts after the fight with that chump change? Holy smokes.
As for Chuck and Tito, these guys are fixing to make a killing from the PPV proceeds — even if it doesn’t reach 1.2 million buys as predicted.
I guess that’s what happens when the “#1 and #2″ light heavyweights in the world go head-to-head.

Watch UFC 66 online anywhere in the world
UFC 66 On Demand
We received a few emails from some UFC fans overseas this week, lamenting that it’s not possible for them to catch UFC 66.
On the contrary, maniacs.
UFC events can now be viewed online anywhere in the world with UFC On Demand.
I’m not sure if this is a new feature just for this event or it has been around for awhile. That’s because I can conveniently purchase the pay-per-view (PPV) event right through my cable box.
But, I did a little research and found the link above.
So whether you’re from Ireland or Japan, fans around the world have the opportunity to watch a UFC 66 on the Internet, according to UFC.com
Seven celebrities who love Ultimate Fighting
Think Hollywood won't be watching this weekend's UFC bout? Think again.
By Deborah Netburn, Times Staff Writer
December 26 2006
On Saturday December 30th Ultimate Fighters Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz will meet at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas to beat each other senseless using moves from every fighting sport known to man. According to Dave Meltzer, creator and writer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the Liddell/Ortiz battle for the UFC light-heavyweight championship will be the biggest fight in the United States in four years--more popular than recent professional boxing matches and pro wrestling bouts. In other words, it is a very big deal.
And because there is a Hollywood angle to just about anything, you'll certainly not be surprised to learn that Ultimate Fighting has developed a substantial celebrity following of late. In anticipation of the big fight Saturday night, we asked Meltzer to tell us the seven biggest celebrity fans of Ultimate Fighting. Here's what he said:
1. "Michael Clark Duncan is a real fan in that he's at shows all the time."
2. "Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Rock has just started going but unlike all the other celebrities, he comes at 5 p.m., watches every prelim match, studies it. Good friends with Tito Ortiz. Used to wrestle Ken Shamrock when both were in WWE. Legitimately big fan."
3. "Shaquille O'Neal said his favorite athlete is Randy Couture, a former UFC champion."
4. "Tim Duncan. He grew up as a big pro-wrestling fan and is part of the big migration of WWE to UFC."
5. "Jason Statham. I know he's been at a lot of the shows."
6. "Cindy Crawford has been to many shows."
7. "Kevin James is a legitimate fan. Also at many shows."
Addendum: "Paris Hilton and Mike Tyson are often at shows, Juliette Lewis (huge Chuck Liddell fan), the Undertaker I've seen. Eric Clapton in Japan but I haven't seen him at a UFC show."

It was encouraging to watch CNBC this morning about TV and packages people are buying for their viewing. All they were talking about was UFfighting stuff and boxing and of course movies. They were mentioning these in that order about the upcoming year.
