With inventories remaining tight in several key segments, retail sales gains were broad-based. Car sales were up 15 percent, utilities up 16 percent and trucks up 30 percent. Ford continued to see strong growth in the coastal regions.
"Producing more Fusions at Flat Rock Assembly with its 1,400 new workers is a welcome opportunity, as Fusion showed great strength in August," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. marketing, sales and service. "Small cars and hybrids continue to outpace the market in the coastal regions of the U.S., with Ford brand retail small car sales growing at more than three times the rate of the U.S. small car industry."
Fusion had its best-ever August sales with 24,653 vehicles sold. Strongest growth for Fusion continues to be in the western region of the country, with retail sales up 63 percent.
Ford's overall small car sales -- including Fiesta, Focus and C-MAX hybrids -- were up 30 percent, with combined sales of 30,148 vehicles. C-MAX hybrids contributed 44 percent of Ford's small car growth in August. Fiesta sales increased 61 percent, for the best August Fiesta sales ever.

Lincoln MKZ sales were up 10 percent to 3,652 vehicles, for a best-ever August sales month. MKZ has now reported record sales for four of the last five months.
Ford also announced it will build 785,000 vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2013, a 7 percent increase (50,000 vehicles) from the fourth-quarter of 2012. Third-quarter production of 740,000 vehicles is unchanged from previous guidance.

NEW DELHI--The Indian unit of Ford Motor Co. (F) has temporarily stopped taking orders for the gasoline versions of its EcoSport sport-utility vehicle as the waiting period for customers to take delivery of the compact SUV stretches as much as six months.
Ford has been witnessing strong demand for the SUV since its introduction in India just over two months ago--a welcome sign in an otherwise sluggish automobile market. It has so far received orders for about 50,000 EcoSport SUVs, Ford said, and this may lead it to expedite its plan to open a second plant in India next year.
"There is a waiting period of three to six months on the EcoSport currently," Joginder Singh, president and managing director of Ford India Pvt. Ltd., told The Wall Street Journal.
The strong demand for the EcoSport comes despite the auto market in India going through a slowdown.
SUV sales fell in July for the first time in nearly two years, according to data issued by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, as a recent increase in factory tax, rising diesel prices and weak consumer sentiment due to a slowing economy affected demand. Combined sales of cars and SUVs fell 7.5% during April to July this year.
Ford sold 23,017 vehicles in India during the four-month period, a 10.5% fall from the year-earlier period, according SIAM data.
Auto makers have been launching new models to help attract customers. Some recently introduced vehicles, such as the EcoSport and Renault S.A.'s Duster SUVs and Honda Motor Co.'s Amaze car, have in fact received strong orders.
Ford introduced the EcoSport on June 26 with three engine options. It offered two gasoline-engine options--a 1.0-liter plant from Ford's EcoBoost family of engines and a 1.5-liter unit--and a 1.5-liter diesel engine.
The base model with the 1.5-liter gasoline engine costs 559,000 rupees ($8, 330) at dealerships in New Delhi, while the top-end version, which has the 1.5- liter diesel engine, sells for 899,990 rupees. The SUV is cheaper than similar models from rival auto makers. For instance, the cheapest gasoline model of the Duster costs 799,000 rupees in New Delhi.
Ford had recalled 972 diesel EcoSport SUVs in July to fix "a potential concern."
Mr. Singh said the company hasn't stopped accepting customer orders for the diesel version. He didn't give any specific reasons for stopping bookings only for gasoline-powered EcoSport.
Ford manufactures the SUV at its plant on the outskirts of the southern port city of Chennai. That facility can produce up to 200,000 vehicles and 340,000 engines a year.
The EcoSport is currently produced in two more countries--Brazil and China-- and Ford plans to expand manufacturing to Thailand and Russia as well.
The company exports the EcoSport to Mexico, South Africa and Aruba, Mr. Singh said. It plans to eventually ship the SUV to more than 100 countries from the five production centers.
Ford also produces the Figo subcompact hatchback, Classic and Fiesta compact cars and the Endeavour SUV in India. Its sales in India fell 17% in the last fiscal year ended March 31 to 77,225 vehicles.
Ford plans to open a $1 billion facility in Sanand, in the western state of Gujarat, in 2014. That plant will have a capacity to manufacture up to 240,000 vehicles and 270,000 engines a year.

2.8 million new shares are hitting the market. SCTY gonna go lower. Not sure where the bottom is here.
Lol. Seems whenever the economy gets going we find ourselves faced with a new military action.
At the end of the day F is a strong company and will go over 25 per share in the long term.
I agree. The turmoil is driving an overall negative macro picture. We will see high 15's but Ford will rise right back up
New U.S. auto sales are estimated to jump 13% in August from a year earlier with all major automakers expected to report sales gains, led by Honda Motor Co. (HMC, 7267.TO), according to Edmunds.com.
The online automotive-information provider estimated 1.46 million new cars and trucks will be sold in the U.S. in August, up from 1.28 million last year and an 11% increase from July's total 1.31 million.
The forecast translates into a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 15.6 million.
Edmunds Senior Analyst Michelle Krebs noted that retail sales were strong in August, however, manufacturers are further reducing their dependance on fleet sales.
"This month's fleet percentage of total sales looks to be the lowest since at least 2007, and the result will be stronger resale values for customers buying new cars and healthier bottom lines for automakers," Ms. Krebs said.
Edmunds forecasts Japanese automaker Honda to post the largest year-over-year sales jump among major manufacturers with an expected 19% increase for August, followed by Toyota Motor Corp. (TM, 7203.TO) with an expected 16% increase. The firm projects Nissan Motor Co.'s (NSANY, 7201.TO) sales to rise 15% from a year earlier.
Among U.S. manufacturers, Edmunds estimates General Motors Co. (GM, GMM.U.T) to record an 11% sales improvement and also projects the company to deliver its highest single-month sales results since September 2008. Ford Motor Co. (F) and Chrysler Group LLC sales are expected to increase 9.4% and 9%, respectively.
South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Motor Co.'s (HYMLY, 005380.SE) sales are projected to rise 11% from last year.
August had 28 sales days in 2013, compared with 27 days in a year earlier and 25 days in July.
