The Beta 3.0 prototype also incorporates its own tunable self-contained detector which can be used in both independent FAIMS operation or in “pass-through” mode for tandem coupling directly with a MS device. Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Raj Attariwala, states, “With completion of the modular Beta 3.0 prototype, Cannabix has achieved several key developmental milestones allowing this technology to be directly tested
against the accepted laboratory standard of mass spectrometry.
The Company has performed preliminary bench testing with the Beta 3.0 prototype and has successfully detected THC using the device in stand-alone mode with tandem MS analysis demonstrating direct correlation. This is a significant developmental milestone which the Company will use to optimize and characterize the device’s performance measures both independently and coupled to MS.

Live Testing with Cannabix Marijuana Breathalyzer Shows Excellent Sensitivity for THC and Related Metabolites :
"The ability to detect THC and its metabolites in human breath is a significant scientific breakthrough that allows for real-time pharmacokinetic analysis. Such analysis provides a method for the identification of frequent users of marijuana who tend to retain THC in their body for longer periods of time, relative to infrequent marijuana users who tend to clear THC from their body more quickly."

Canadian police forces hold off on ordering the only device approved to test saliva for THC -
The government keeps secret which devices are being evaluated, how many are being evaluated and the level of progress in general.
“Details of those evaluations will remain confidential to protect the commercial and proprietary interests of the manufacturers,” Justice Canada said in a statement to the National Post.
“As further devices are expected to become approved shortly, we are waiting to have more information before we choose a course of action,” said the Hamilton Police Service.
“At this time we have not placed an order,” said the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. “We are still considering our options for the detection of cannabis in drivers.”

To date, oral fluid is the most studied and promising alternative matrix for DUID programs. However, THC is detected in oral fluid for 48 hours in chronic smokers during sustained abstinence.
Exhaled breath may offer an alternative to oral fluid testing as cannabinoid detection in this matrix may better coincide with impairment.

The testing for the presence of THC in the bloodstream hasn't been very helpful either, it's usually done through blood, urine or saliva, which tests residual amounts as opposed to that actively used by the body at the time of the test.
There is some light on the horizon, however. A new company, Cannabix Technologies, is touting a new breath test that can detect the amount of THC in a driver's body at the time of the test.

Will CBD Entirely Eclipse The Cannabis Market? -
"Between 2017 and 2018, the U.S. hemp-derived CBD market has nearly doubled in size, but the five-year growth projections for this market are now dramatically higher than they were a year ago. This is because the full legalization of hemp-derived CBD is now a real and likely prospect following Republican Mitch McConnell’s recent proposal of the Hemp Farming Act of 2018 (Farm Bill).
This legislation – likely to pass later this year – would clearly and unambiguously legalize hemp as well as its derivatives, extracts and cannabinoids, including hemp CBD.”

Excellent post. Thank you.
The report continues that in mid-2018,
“legislation was proposed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that would remove hemp – including hemp-derived CBD – from the Controlled Substances Act altogether. The decision was also likely influenced by the pending 2018 FDA decision on the use of Epidiolex (containing cannabis plant-derived CBD) to treat epilepsy. The FDA decision to sign off may prompt a rescheduling by the DEA in the coming months.”

Lawyers prepare to challenge use of pot screening device :
Two lawyers from a Vancouver-based law firm say they are ready to challenge the use of a newly approved saliva-screening device for marijuana in court as soon as it hits the road.
A study published in February looked into Norway’s use of the device by taking blood samples along with saliva tests for more than 300 drivers.
It concluded that the device “did not absolutely correctly identify [driving under the influence of drugs] offenders due to fairly large proportions of false-positive or false-negative results compared to drug concentrations in blood.”

Marilyn Huestis from the National Institute on Drug Abuse states, “…on average in the United States it takes from 1.4-4 hours after a crash or traffic stop to administer a blood test. If someone is driving impaired, by the time you get their blood samples, you’ve lost 90% or more of the drug.”
This is also posing a problem with how quick THC can leave the bloodstream. Changing the test performed at the roadside when the individual is most impaired could make a difference in keeping the public safe and impaired drivers off the road...

Oregon crime labs drowning in urine samples-
Marilyn Huestis, the former chief of chemistry and drug metabolism for the National Institute on Drug Abuse, said it is nearly impossible for fluid testing to accurately determine whether someone is impaired by tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive compound in marijuana.
Adding to the problem, she said, is the fact that THC lingers in the body much longer than other drugs. Anyone high a week ago most likely still has the drug in his or her system.
