Dear Southwest Airlines
I’ve used SWA for many years and I have never been disappointed with your service. I travel mostly in the eastern United States but occasionally I need to go to the west coast. The one thing I miss most on SWA on long flights is the lack of an in-flight movie.
Do you have any plans to add the capability of showing movies on any of your new aircraft? I recently saw a news article about a device Alaska Airlines offers. It supposedly is a handheld player and shows first-run movies. Is it possible you could offer anything like this in the future?
Thank you for your continued excellent service.
Sincerely,
Since it had been almost a month I thought they weren't going to answer but today I received a phone call from Southwest. I was on my cell phone on the Washington Beltway in heavy traffic and I missed the lady's name. However, here is the gist of what she said:
They received my letter and appreciate my comments.
They expect to get into IFE and are considering the options. She said they need something that doesn't affect their bottom line too much. She said some of their financial people met in New York a couple of weeks ago to discuss the issue.
I mentioned again having seen on TechTV a handheld device with a decent sized screen. She said, ''Is that the one Alaska Airlines is using?'' I said that it was and she said again that they were looking at all the options and that they were on the same page as me in wanting some type of IFE.

Hot Topic: Boeing Unveils B7E7 Interior Concepts
The hype has begun and it is centered on the B7E7 interior as conceived by Boeing Payloads engineers, psychologists, and, no doubt, and a contracted design house or two. With a stated goals of “creating a feeling of being on a plane” and a “sense of welcome”, Klaus Brauer, Boeing spokesperson, toured local television crews during the ‘coming out’ party for the newest interior mockup. We will include links of the proposed plane interior for our readers at the end of this article and you can determine for yourself if the designers met their objectives. IFE readers might note that there appeared to be no hint of entertainment systems on the mockup and we concluded that Boeing does not see that as their job, but rather, one for the airlines. The seats used were ultra thin and probably would not be final airline choice, unless of course, they were planning to use those new digEplayer units and eliminate installed IFE altogether! Another surprise was the “simulated sky” manufactured by lights hidden in the ceiling reveal (blue and white LED’s). The sky color is crew controlled and, we are told, simulates the feel of the wide open spaces. Brauer briefed the press corps and said, “Boeing wants people to connect with the sky”. No doubt, and the sweeping lines of the interior panels seem to do just that while the design does make it difficult to judge ceiling height. Light seems to be the focus of the B7E7 and we should note that the windows have been increased in size (46% more area) and raised so the average seated passenger will finally be able to see the horizon. This is a smart decision as we feel a horizontal reference point just may reduce motion queasiness for some passengers. With respect to window shades, it also looks like Boeing is planning new technology in the form of an electronic polarization technique quite similar to the demonstrators we have seen at recent interiors shows, notably the ones developed by 3M. Bigger side bins in Business Class will eliminate the need for those pesky center row overhead units (yea!). The 3-2-3 configuration and improved floor width will accommodate seats that offer 18.5 inches of enjoyment (economy) while both aisles gain almost 2 inches… each. Obviously, seat manufacturers will have a lot to say about this! As IFE nuts, we were a little disappointed that Boeing did not include onboard video installations in this mockup because if is not to be designed-in, the reality of video screens may change the open feel of the interior look and feel. Let’s face it, this plane will have some form of video entertainment and we certainly have learned that it is a whole lot better to design the interior with the IFE in mind rather that do it after the fact.
Sent-Now all it has to do is to double for 5 days in a row. I don't think that's too much to ask. Just double 5 days in a row. That will work for me.

New entertainment system on Alaska Airlines
05:53 PM PST on Friday, November 14, 2003
By GLENN FARLEY / KING 5 News
SEA-TAC, Wash. - Bill Boyer has worked as an Alaska Airlines baggage handler for 16 years. Two years ago, he had an idea on how to make flying more entertaining.
“I had some drawings of a nice portable box, and what it would do,” he said.
That box is now known as the DigEplayer. It does not play DVDs or tapes. Instead, it contains a large hard drive that holds dozens of movies, sitcoms, airport information and a wide range of music.
KING
The DigEplayer lets viewers choose movies, music and more.
The idea for the Seat Back Video System came after Alaska airlines found imbedded seat back systems built into airplanes to be heavy and inflexible.
“There are expenses involved in fuel, weight, content,” said Dave Palmer, Alaska Marketing Manager. “This gives a person so much control, and so much programming choice.”
The system will rent for $8. It has a battery that lasts 10 hours - enough for two cross-country trips.
If the passenger does not like this movie, they can stop the movie, go to the menu, go back to movies and click on another movie - all included in the price.
Bill Boyer still slings bags, part time. The rest of his time is spent running APS, his Tacoma company that programs the DigEplayers, deals with Hollywood and is working to put games onto the system.
The DigEplayer has been available in first class for the past two weeks.
On Monday, it rolls out in coach on the Seattle to Boston run, then onto other transcontinental flights over the next three weeks.
I don't believe that the fact that a lot of airlines, if not all of them, having some kind of IFE syatem in place has anything to do with them also using the digEplayer in addition.
My guess is that most airlines will offer customers one option of using whatever ife system they have already installed or committed to, and the second option of using the digEplayer, and a third option of using both. I don't think that the specific airlines will abandon their current expensive ife system at all. I do think most will offer the digEplayer as an option. Just my thoughts.
Greengo and Qualitycraft-Thanks for a Job well done today. We appreciate it. The good times are coming. By the way, I don't believe Boyer was saying that we wouldn't get announcements for 5 more airlines, I think he was only saying that we are only getting 2 right now. This thing could become a standard very quickly. Good luck.
You know, it's no wonder that RP and FF have been so excited about the IFE prospects. This is a very big deal with very good margins. This could be the very thing that will make this company arrive a year earlier than it may have otherwise done.
Looks like they already fixed it Dick.

Sent-I just registered. Then to to reserve a player in the top middle. Then in the center of the screen, hit the drop down box. It worked for me.
Sent-This is, imo, a very big deal. And if the 14 or so number we heard the other day is true, this will quickly become the standard, a very high margin standard.

One of the things that strikes me is that this is one of the few pictures that is dated in November, 2003. Most are earlier in the year.

OK-They are making one of the Odyssey clones. And they are making the Eclipse devise per financials. Could be the one-Good job.
You are an animal. Keep truckin.
This has been discussed before and I don't think we ever came to any kind of conclusion. Specific info is hard to find. They could be used just for the Eclipse products.

Our good friend jack vance passed away
I am so sorry to report to the edig group that our good friend Willie Paul Culberson, aka jack vance, passed away on October 19th at 9:45. He was 58.
I spoke to his brother, Art, this morning inquiring about jv as we had not seen his posts for sometime. He told me that Willie Paul had melanoma and had been ill for some months but was reluctant to tell very many people.
I told Art that he had a great many friends on the internet through his association with edig and that his style of communication was informative, but quite often made us laugh as well, and we will remember his wit.
Our prayers will be for Willie Paul and his brother.
Does anyone live close to Ashland, Alabama, where jv resided?
Arkie-Jack was one of the good ones. I am happy to have known and talked to him many times. I think of him often.

Last Week Ark.
You can't stand it can you?
I just came in here to see what's happening and frankly, IMO, it's quite embarassing to see the good people here and this site itself being forced to deal with and listen to a couple of posters who obviously know nothing about this company. I will never understand why this site was allowed to be ruined by these know nothings. By the way, this is just my opinion, and of course the opinion of dozens and dozens of others who don't use or visit this site anymore. Too damn bad, that's all I know.
If no one ever answered these posters ever, then I think they would go away. But as long as they have an audience, they will continue to do what they do, and no one will prevent it. By the way, the way they manipulate people here is very classic. Too bad, that's all I can say. Frankly, I have better things to do.
This is all in my opinion only.
Revenues this qtr may also depend on how many thousands of Jukeboxes Gateway sells, wouldn't a normal intelligent thinking person think? IMO, yeah that's what they would think. Just all my opinion only though.
No, you said "if the revenues were 25 million", I thought. That's what I was responding to.
SSI-IMO, I would say that would put our pps at $3.33 at 20x, $5.00 at 30x, and $6.66 at 40X, I don't think 40X would be out of the question, due to some irrational exuberance that would occur, imo.
Culater-Great stuff. Think our revenue will grow going forward? Exponential may be the operative word in 2004 and 2005.
That's just it Milplease, no one does believe anything that this poster posts, IN MY TRULY VERY HUMBLE OPINION AND PROBABLY NO ONE ELSES. (lolololololol)
Goodtogo-Suggestion: Don't take the negative posters seriously at all. No one else does. Good Luck.
Nope, not yet.
Annpayt-Good to see you. Good luck in the days and weeks to come. Let's pretend like it's 1999 all over again.
Early-Great to see you. Same good luck to you.
Good post Tin, very intuitive of you. I agree.
Good post Murgirl.
Sentinel-It never makes any sense, none of it.
You and your two friends here just can't stand it can you?
Pro's and con's of the E.Digital Odyssey 1000

All pro's and con's of the E.Digital Odyssey 1000 are laid out in this list. You will also find a list of features/improvements that we would like to be implemented into this unit. We need to add that a firmware upgrade was not available during the creation of this list. Since the latest firmware upgrade has come available, the Odyssey 1000 seems to perform a lot better than it used to do. Maybe we'll do an extensive review on the unit later on this year.

Maybe they'll do a review later this year, this guy is a moron.
Moxa-exactly. The pps success in the end wiii all be in the pudding, and nothing else.
