The Gateway Shield - Features (just to remind)
Security threats abound, with more and more dangers popping up all the time. But thanks to GatewayShield, you can take proactive steps to protect your Internet activity, data and hardware. Here's how...
Remember when the Internet was a safe, happy, friendly place? Not so much today. For example, according to an AOL/Cyber Security Alliance study, 80% of all home computers are infected with spyware and adware. Get the proper defense with GatewayShield's Internet protection.
Just Say No to Viruses and Spyware:
McAfee® Internet Security Suite
Take up arms in the ongoing battle against viruses, worms, spyware, phishing and hackers! After all, your computer is where you store important information, from financial data to precious family photos. Don't risk losing files or falling prey to identity theft. And don't suffer through poor PC performance, which can be caused by spyware and adware.
The solution for home and small business users? McAfee® Internet Security Suite. This security software bundle automatically scans files, e-mail attachments and Internet downloads for malicious activity. Plus, automated daily updates mean you're always protected from the latest threats. The suite includes: VirusScan, Personal Firewall Plus, SpamKiller and Privacy Service.
The Professional Solution:
Symantec™ Client Security (SCS)
For professional use, there's Symantec™ Client Security (SCS). This software solution comprehensively and proactively protects enterprise client systems from security risks and network intrusions, such as blended threats, spyware, unauthorized network access and mass-mailer attacks.
Management and administration are simple, too, allowing organizations to maintain control of client systems, minimize productivity disruptions and enhance client security. And did someone say firewall? Firewall configurations are optimized to minimize setup and provide protection as soon as possible.
Updates for Even More Security: BigFix® Upgrade Utility
Staying on top of operating system and utility updates is an important part of maintaining computer security. The handy BigFix® Upgrade Utility remembers to update so you don't have to—it automatically performs OS and utility updates.
Nearly 1 million computer users have been victims of identity theft fraud.¹ What's more, there was an estimated $5.4 billion (yep, that's billion) in proprietary information theft in 2004.² Data needs to be safe and secure, whether it's personal or business-related. And data is something that GatewayShield vigilantly protects.
Data Defender: TPM
A security chip that's bound to a computer's motherboard—and that can't be removed—TPM stands for Trusted Platform Module. It provides enhanced protection against information exposure for professional systems. Among other things, TPM:
• encrypts data and files to defend against hackers
• authenticates and protects user passwords
• offers network authentication
• safeguards e-mail communications and file transfers
Besides the TPM chip, TPM software is required to manage the chip. That's where EMBASSY® Trust Suite Gateway Edition comes in. This extensive software suite includes three applications: EMBASSY® Security Center (setting up and managing preferences for TPM), Security Wizards (additional hardware security) and Private Information Manager (password protection and management).
Delete It: Computrace® Complete
In addition to protecting hardware with remote tracking (see below), Absolute Software's Computrace®Complete also can protect your business's data. An optional data delete feature will wipe valuable data from a stolen notebook. Even if you eventually get your notebook back, Computrace®Complete lets you be proactive so that the thief doesn't have access to sensitive information in the meantime.
Extra Security for Your Data: Gateway Complete Security Suite II
The more data security the better, right? With Gateway Complete Security Suite II for home and small business users, you get that added layer of protection that can make all the difference. Personal Data Vault encrypts and
password-protects your data, providing a single, secure place to store your sensitive information. Recover Pro works to ensure that applications and data can be recovered in case of virus attack, accidental file overwrite or Windows failure.
And that's not all: Gateway Complete Security Suite II also includes Window Washer, which removes unnecessary files to maintain your privacy and free up valuable disk space, and Spy Sweeper, which fights against spyware and adware.
Sobering fact No. 1: According to Safeware Insurance, every 53 seconds a notebook gets stolen. Sobering fact No. 2: The FBI reports that 97% of all stolen computers are never recovered. GatewayShield includes robust security features that will help keep your hardware where it belongs—with you.
Lockdown: Reinforced Lock Slots
Don't overlook an old-school security solution: a good old-fashioned lock. Gateway® notebooks, desktops and flat-panel displays (and some servers) come with reinforced lock slots at no additional cost. With a cable lock, such as a Kensington lock, in place, you can then loop the cable through a secure fixture and lock to your computer.
To Catch a Notebook Thief: Computrace®Complete
But if your notebook does go missing, what then? Absolute Software's Computrace®Complete is a theft recovery service embedded into a notebook's BIOS—that's Basic Input/Output System, which is built into the motherboard and is responsible for starting up your computer.³
When you purchase a notebook with a Computrace®Complete subscription through Gateway, Absolute Software will contact you and provide instructions on downloading and activating the necessary software. Once that's done, the location of a notebook can be tracked every time it tries to connect to the Internet. If someone steals your notebook, Absolute Software's Monitoring Center will work with law enforcement officials to track and recover it.
Computrace®Complete is meant for professional and business environments. It also allows IT departments to monitor who's using their computers, as well as detect unauthorized software and hardware changes.
Return to Owner: Computrace® LoJack® for Laptops
Home PC users, however, can take advantage of Computrace® LoJack® for Laptops. Instead of BIOS integration, though, it's a software-based theft recovery service that otherwise works similar to Computrace®Complete. Install the software, and if your notebook vanishes, you can work with Absolute Software to get it back.
Both Computrace®Complete and Computrace® LoJack® for Laptops offer the same security peace of mind. Even if your notebook mysteriously disappears, you can still get it back—and Absolute Software reports a more than 90% retrieval success rate.

If you remember, these to models were only shipped with ESC through the chip vendor. I saw these models at BC in Vienna and there was NO ETSL preinstalled. Only the 390 precision had the ETSL!
Since 12/12/06 the drivers sections for these two models has changed. Before you could download ONLY the ESC, NOW its ETSL!!!!

WOW....thanx guys and gals, but it belongs to Jose on AB, since he has found the article.
The very important fact is that revenues from Seagate are now mentioned publically and that SKS spoke of BE end of Q2, although he knows, that we all are not pleased with "some forward looking statements". So there must be meat behind this.

The new personal computer
By Scott Stafford, Berkshire Eagle Staff
(edit : from Jose/AB)
http://www.berkshireeagle.com/headlines/ci_5104863
Sunday, January 28
LEE — Steven Sprague, president and CEO of Wave Systems Corp., wishes his laptop computer would work like his cell phone and intuitively know who he is and what he is allowed to do.
Largely because of his efforts and those of his colleagues at the company, his wish will soon come true.
After more than 10 years of development, business is about to blossom for the software development firm, as more computers are shipped with hardware and software that enables what is known as the Trusted Platform Module (TPM).
According to Sprague and others, using a silicon chip and the software that enables it, the TPM takes computer security to a whole new level of convenience and encryption.
Dell, Gateway, Intel equipped with software
And Wave is the company that developed the enabling software being shipped already installed in all Dell and Gateway corporate class PCs, shipped with Intel motherboards and installed on all TPM chips manufactured by four of the five chip manufacturers — Atmel Corp., ST Microelectronics, Winbond and Broadcom.
It also markets expanded versions of the software that companies can purchase to further secure sensitive information, with far more convenience.
"Finally, my PC will have the same level of security as my cell phone," Sprague said.
The problem, he explained, is that, as computers were asked to do more and more through the Web, the need to secure information grew as well. Now users are required to remember anywhere from a handful to dozens of passwords for a variety of Web sites and associated businesses, depending on how sensitive their transactions are.
Keeping track of all those passwords has become a burden and, in many cases, an obstacle to doing business efficiently.
According to Chris Cahalin, manager of network operations for Papa Gino's pizza restaurant chain, the need to protect sensitive financial information through the use of a variety of multilevel passwords became such an obstacle course that some district managers stopped carrying their laptop computers.
"Before, it was just a nightmare," Cahalin said. "Now those laptops have become a tool they can use again. I think the thing that's most impressive is that you don't have to baby-sit the process — it just works and works well."
Side effect: Decreased stress
Cahalin added that, as they deployed the new procedure, it had some interesting side effects: The ease of its use seems to have reduced the turnover rate of employees by reducing the stress level related to complex password requirements.
Sprague explained that the TPM system locks sensitive access codes into a virtual vault that is inaccessible to anyone other than the authorized user. The user must enter a biometric (fingerprint) and/or a password, and all other authorizations for that computer are automatically released, without sharing them with other Web sites or systems.
Sensitive information stored on the computer, and access to other systems through the network or the Internet, are inaccessible without the proper authorization.
Once the biometric password is given, there should not be any need for other passwords, unless the user wants to further encrypt the information.
"I log into my PC, and my PC logs me into the rest of the world," Sprague said.
"It knows I am who I say I am, and it releases those credentials," Cahalin said. "It's very cool, and it's really simple. It has given the device integrity again."
Used for corporate purposes
As more computers are shipped with the TPM system (more than 6 million have shipped already), its use will become more widespread, Sprague explained. It is currently used for mostly corporate purposes, but it will soon spread to the consumer market as well.
And as more people use TPM, more people will be looking to purchase the software upgrades to expand the program's abilities.
Wave is paid by the computer and chip manufacturers through licensing agreements for each computer shipped with their product included, and it will make money selling the software upgrades. It also will soon be making money from Seagate, a leading manufacturer of internal hard drives, for new, full-disk encryption software that will be installed on all its new drives.
"We're finally at a point where we're seeing widespread adoption by PC manufacturers and users," Sprague said. "Companies are starting to wake up and say, 'Oh, I have a TPM in every computer.' "
It has been a long wait. Sprague said that TPM has been in development at Wave since the mid-1990s, with roughly $300 million invested in the effort. The company has been publicly traded since 1994. Today, Wave employs about 100, with 30 at the offices in Lee and others in New York City, Cupertino, Calif., and in France.
Difficult past
There have been some rough spots, including a 2003 SEC investigation of allegations of insider trading and a class-action lawsuit from stockholders reacting to those allegations. The SEC investigation resulted in no charges, and the lawsuit was settled in early 2006 for $1.75 million.
Today, all the headaches, development work and waiting for the market and technology to catch up with the trusted computing concept are about to pay off.
"Our funding has come from public market investors who believe this will work," Sprague said. "And now we're finally at the point where revenues will fund operations. We expect to be cash-flow positive by the end of the first half of 2007."
The level of security on most computers is expected to rise to a level as yet unseen, making information unreachable by the unauthorized and information theft a relative rarity.
"This system makes it incredibly difficult to steal information — outside of somebody with the resources of NASA — once it has been properly created and secured," said Rob Enderle, president and principal analyst for the Enderle Group and acknowledged by many as one of the most influential technology analysts in the world.
He said Wave is in a unique position as the company that makes the TPM system work.
"(Wave's) focus is on enabling the communication, not just on securing the communication," he said. "It's critical not only to individual security and corporate security, but to national, financial security. It is a specialty that is in high demand and technology that is more advanced than anybody else's."

Dory.....Waves partner (like Dell) report the quarterly sales within one month after the quarter. So Wave can book the revenues into the quarter, since they can book the revs before the CC/earnings call (thanx to cpa).
So Wave gets paid royalities on a quarterly basis.

Figures HDD market share....
Seagate – 29.0%
Western Digital – 18.5%
Hitachi – 14.4%
Maxtor – 11.9%
Toshiba – 9.3%
Samsung – 8.6%
Fujitsu – 6.8%
Excelstor – 1.2%
http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/storage/display/20060728071926.html
HITACHI
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST) maintained its No.3 ranking, having shipped 14.7 million drives. However, the manufacturer lost some ground, with its market share dropping to 14.4% in the first quarter, down 1.8% compared to the fourth quarter.
So my 50M number for Hitachi should work...
BR
ISPRO
Tango....you´ll have to be patient with me, but I got you now.
1. Lets say it wouldn´t make sense to me to build in a chip which costs money and don´t use it.
2. For the figures, I can only guess since I don´t have the exact numbers, but let me try. We know that about 250M machines are shipped per year. Seagate (Maxtor) own about 45%, so let me assume that 20% is Hitachi.
So we´ll talk about 50M drives from Hitachi and about 40% notebook drives. From the 20M 2.5 drives per year I would say the 4M (20%) FDE drives sound reasonable.
Perhaps somebody could help us with the numbers, so we have not to assume anymore.
Sorry for the confusion
BR
ISPRO
Tango.....let me assume something.
From the technical side, it´s IMPOSSIBLE to offer a hardware encryption as an option cause you can´t build in a chip in the drive on demand! So there are two ways to explain this issue.
1.Hitachi has a set of 2.5 drives from which lets say about 30% will be FDE drives now and in 2008 all will have FDE.
2. Each Hitachi drive of the 2.5 line has a normal and a FDE model.
I think the second possibility would be rather expensive for Hitachi and difficult to promote, so I expect their product portfolio similar to Seagates.
BR
ISPRO
Snackman/Tango........re:volume STX/Hitachi optional
Snackman, so Steven awaits 25% of the FDEs shipped with ETDM, the rest should go to legacy systems? I doubt that, IMO he tries to hold our estimations low!LOL
Tango, if you read it once more, you´ll see that they are speaking of all of the 2.5 disk drives and therefore the word optional! They also could say that some of their 2.5 drives would be FDE drives!
"On Nov. 1, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies announced that it will offer optional hardware encryption on all of its new 2.5-inch disk drives, which are expected to ship at a rate of a million units per quarter in early 2007 (referenced to FDEs, IMO)."
BR
ISPRO
Haven´t seen this, sorry if posted but an interesting mention here re: Seagate....
http://www.financetech.com/focus/outsourcing/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=196513746&pgno=6
"....Over the last few weeks, PC hardware vendors have been rolling out security technology at a rapid rate. On Nov. 1, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies announced that it will offer optional hardware encryption on all of its new 2.5-inch disk drives, which are expected to ship at a rate of a million units per quarter in early 2007. That announcement came on the heels of new drives from Seagate Technology, which will not only offer hard drive encryption but also multi-factor authentication options that would make it impossible for unauthorized users to access any data on the hard drive.
BR
ISPRO
Architect and Wavxmaster....absolutely agreed! The time will come when Joe will talk about TPMs like about the USB right now, sure sooner than later, but not yet.
BTW DoD and Seagate and upgrades will boost our SP in the never come back range!LOL
BR
ISPRO
Architect...right on, but the Joe Blows I know, don´t order a machine via web, they walk to a IT-megastore and SHOP. And in these shops he´ll find the consumer line. Joe wants to touch it before he shops....
Perhaps our Joes in Austria are more conservative than the American Joes....LOL
BTW, I think GTW is a good choice!
BR
ISPRO
OTOT....Barge since I´ve no PM capability anymore, could you PM me your email, I don´t want to bore people here by discussing this issue! (BTW I find it very interesting)
BR
ISPRO
Barge...I hope you´re right on this!
If Mr.Joe wants to watch premium content, he´ll try to do everything!LOL
Anyway, it doesn´t matter, where the money comes from
BR
ISPRO
Barge....I don´t know it, but if you visit the HP or DELL sites for the consumer machines you´ll not see TPMs in the specifications.
And both HP and DELL promote their business machines WITH TPMs, so I ASSUME that there are no TPMs in the consumer lines...
I would be pleased to be wrong here, but I don´t think so.
As I said, this will chance SOON, IMO!
BR
ISPRO
Barge LOL!
Of course YOU are able to! We all here would be and would do it, BUT Mr. JOE doesn´t know what a TPM is and doesn´t know what ETS is.
I would count us WAVOIDS in the FREAK section, thats why we´re here and why we´ll benefit from this new market!
BR
ISPRO
Waverider....thats 100% correct!
IF all 1000 companies WOULD start at the same time with about 100 machines per month.....KABOOM!
BUT.....
we´re dealing here with a NEW paradigm, that means you´ll have to educate ALL of these 1000 companies at the same time, so our challenge is how could a company like Wave do this? Sure we have Dell/GTW/INTEL to bring us in the game, but I´m sure Waves reps have to educate the IT guys in the companies.
THIS will change....
when TPMs will become State of the Art like AntiVirus software, but we are not there YET!
BR
ISPRO
Barge......the ultimate topic!LOL
"The consumer space"
Well, IMO there are absolute different factors for calculating a timeframe. All the factors stated in my previous post wouldn´t influence the consumer space, so we have to look at some other factors.
What counts?
1. The behavior of the OEMs regarding consumer machines with TPMs
2. .....Nothing else
What do we see/assume?
1. Asus, a late TPM-OEM, is now the first TPM adopter in TPM consumer machines! (nearby all notebooks)
2. HP, DELL have NO TPM consumer PCs yet. I expect first models end of Q2
3. TPM based content applications will evolve with a broad basis of TPM consumer machines
4. TPM consumer machines have to come with a TURNED ON TPM and preinstalled management software (like Dell business machines), so the consumer has no other choice than to use it.
Since the consumer has nearby NO choice with regard to the software preinstalled on the machines, I would say a quasi TPM "killerapp" and access to premium content wouldn´t change anything.
1. Most of the consumer are not able to activate the TPM and to install ETS even IF they knew what it is.
2. OEM machines hitting the market right now (in Austria) are preinstalled with Vista (HOME) Premium
3. Only a few consumer would upgrade Vista Premium to Ultimate due to costs and technical issues
4. ALL entertainment machines (from all OEMs, especially the big ones) have to be equipped with Vista Ultimate.
Similar to the enterprise space, there will be some first adopters on the consumer side(PC freaks!LOL), who will use the new technology. BUT it all is in the hands of the OEMs!
BTW, yesterday I installed my first Vista enterprise machine in our office in the evening. I had no time to test it yet, but the first thing I did was to type in the word "BITLOCKER" in the new searching feature of VISTA and the results were NIL!LOL
But the new desktop and some features are really COOL....

Hamster....agreed on the ramp up in Q1.
But we´ll see an increase in Q4 due to ESC/ETSL in Dell machines.

Timeline from first contact to implementation.
Since a concern of this board is how MANY upgrades will be sold WHEN, I want to try to explain the issues in predicting the timeframe of closing deals in the software business. I expect most of you being in the software business to agree with me RE: timeframe.
There are several facts influencing the timeframe of a software implemetation in a company.
1. Enterprise critical solution (+ expands timeframe)
2. State of the art (- reduces timeframe) or new technology (+ expands timeframe)
3. Reference installations (- reduces timeframe)
4. Cost structure low (- reduces timeframe)
5. ROI (- reduces timeframe)
6. Competition existing (+ expands timeframe)
7. Hardware infrastructure (+ expands timeframe)
Sure there will be more factors but I use the above...
The normal timeframe for decisions in the SW business is about between 3 month up to 2 years depending on the factors mentioned above.
1. Since SECURITY solutions are meanwhile the most enterprise critical solutions, I´ll say this point will demand more testing, valuation and therefore expands the timeframe for the decision
2. Hardware security is NOT only a new product, it´s a new paradigm, which needs explanation and education and therefore expands the timeframe
3. We´ve NO or minimal references, which doesn´t help us in the decision progress, but there are always first movers otherwise NO new technology would have ever evolved.
4. Our low cost structure helps us
5. Therefore we have a great ROI which helps us too
6. The small competition (YET) dues to a shorter testing phase since there will be no or a few comparison processes. (but we´ll have to compete with the classic security software solutions)
7. Companies have to change their hardware infrastructure which normally takes 3 years. Since TPM 1.2 are available for one year, I expect a full implementation in an enterprise within 2 years. Legacy systems have to be equipped with competing classic security products.
So we see, even if we close deals (what I´m sure of) it´ll take months up to 2 years to implement a full trusted infrastructure in an enterprise. That means I would NOT await an EXPLOSION in our revenues, but a STRONG ramp up. (doubling from quarter to quarter)
Have a nice weekend all

Barge...you´re 100% correct that the industry floods the market with TPMs without the knowledge of the consumer.
This is the most silent introduction of a technology, made to protect digital property, rights and identity!
Don´t tell them they have a TPM on board just do it! And one year later you´ll tell them to activate their TPMs to gain access to premium content!
What I would have pointed out in my previous post is that Asus has (had) a relationship with IFX and Bioscrypt, so we assumed that the Bioscrypt software will support machines without TPMs and the IFX suite will support the machines with TPMs in conjunction with Bioscrypt.
WRONG! Asus has NO TPM management software at all (YET) and the ASUS suite (through Bioscrypt) supports no TPM functionality! So they are STILL an OEM target for Waves ETSL.

Barge.....I just got my ASUS R2H mini notebook with the same entertainment software! It´s a really cool mini notebook with TPM1.2, GPS, WiFi, BT, Video, Foto,MS Tablet ASUS Protection Suite .....
The TPM is disabled, the ASUS Protection Suite works WITHOUT the TPM (Like Sony´s Protection Suite). Contrary to SONY, ASUS has no TPM software at all, NO drivers on the HDD or on a CD! I´ll look tomorrow what TPM is built in.

Weby........re: Bitlocker
Weby Bitlocker is just another software encryption program like Utimaco, Credant and other solutions in the world. Since Bitlocker is only available in Enterprise and Ultimate edition it seems to me that it would not have a great impact on the other encryption software vendors. The majority of Windows user will not have the chance to use it.
The really hugh impact will be driven by HARDWARE encryption solutions like SEAGATE/WAVE or HITACHI/WAVE(?) solutions, cause these solutions will be more secure WITHOUT any performance penalties!
