UPDATE 1-Apple's new iPhone features Qualcomm chip
http://in.reuters.com/article/2011/10/13/apple-teardown-idINN1E79C0T620111013
Oct 13 (Reuters) - Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) fifth-generation iPhone uses a wireless chipset from Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O), according to repair and parts specialist iFixit, which cracked the device open on Thursday.
The new iPhone also features the Apple A5 chip with 1 GHz dual-core processor, according to iFixit, known in the technology industry for stripping down and revealing the innards of Apple devices.
The Qualcomm chipset is an upgrade from the one used in the previous version of the phone, iFixit said.
Apple is famous for designing sealed-up devices intended to discourage fans from poking around in them.
The iPhone 4S will hit store shelves around the globe on Friday after a 15-month hiatus, and is expected to draw the usual throngs eager to grab a piece of the final gadget unveiled during Steve Jobs' lifetime.
The fifth iteration of the iconic smartphone comes with a faster processor and a better and more light-sensitive camera, but otherwise is a spitting image of its predecessor. Tech experts say the real gems lie beneath the familiar sleek casing, especially in its "Siri" voice-activated digital assistant.
Ok....back in RMBS, albeit a little late for today's run.
RAX: "Goldman Sachs analyst Scott Goldman upped his rating to Buy from Hold. He raised his price target on the stock to $54, from $44; the stock closed yesterday at $37.52.
“We believe the Street is underestimating RAX’s revenue growth potential for 2012 amid soft economic indicators, a decelerating tech spending outlook, high SME [small and medium-sized business] exposure and increased competition,” he writes. “However, we view RAX as a near-term secular winner in the shift to cloud computing with the opportunity to maintain elevated growth.”He lifts his 2012 revenue growth forecast to 33.6%, from 25.2%, while boosting 2013 to 25.4%, to 20.5%.

And, then yesterday there was this:
"A report from Benchmark states that it has downgraded Raskspace Hosting (NYSE: RAX) to Hold from Buy and reduced the price target from $50 to $42.
In the report, Benchmark writes, “Rackspace is a high-growth, high multiple stock with heavy exposure to small and medium sized businesses. We believe it is the most vulnerable of the data center stocks to further stock price retrenchment. We maintain our estimates which reflect lower revenue growth than Street consensus but higher profitability”."

Hung Jury in Chip Price-Fixing Case
Finding government's star witness not believable, jurors vote 10-2 for acquittal

After 11 trial days, the first thing jurors talked about when they could finally discuss the price-fixing case before them was the government's star witness, foreperson Phyllis McCaughey said Thursday.
And she was blunt about their assessment of Micron executive Michael Sadler, who testified in the high-stakes DRAM antitrust prosecution against his counterpart at Hynix, defendant Gary Swanson: "Mr. Sadler, we all felt, was a lying sack of shit."

That's all I saw in an IV post.....it's easier to read over here, that site is so slow.

A. Yeah. The information I got from Mr. Swanson I believed was an additional piece of information that would have ultimately helped us to achieve higher prices that we otherwise would have.
Q. Did you consider Mr. Swanson to be a very Senior person at Hynix during the time you were having these discussions with him?
A. Yes, I did.
Q. You knew at the time that Mr. Swanson’s boss at Hynix was D. S. Kim, right?

Q. Mr. Sadler, by whom are you employed?
A. I’m employed by Micron Technology.
Q. What is your title there?
A. My title is vice president of worldwide sales.
Q. How long have you had that title?
A. I’ve had that specific title since approximately the end of 2001.
…………………
Q. Approximately how much revenue did Micron get from the sale of DRAM’s during the 4 year period from 1999 to 2002?
A. I’m going to approximate, to the best of my recollection, somewhere in the neighborhood of $15 or $16 billion over that 4 year period.
………………………..
Q. Before 2007 how long had you reported directly to Mr. Appleton?
A. I have reported directly to Mr. Appleton starting in 2000 up through approximately 6 --9 months ago.

A. Yes, we did.
Q. You knew that was happening at least by 1999, right?
A. Yes, I did.
Q. And in the time period from 1999 to 2002 it was very clear to you that Micron sales personnel were getting information directly from Micron’s competitors about their DRAM prices.
A.Yes, I was aware of that.
Q. When did the process stop?
A. The process stopped in the middle of 2002.
Q. Why did it stop?
A. That process was stopped because we received a subpoena from the United States Department of Justice indication that they had started an investigation regarding alleged price fixing.

Hey b'dzr...today on ABob's IDCC board there were just 9 posts. Pretty cool.
For many years jimlur assisted investors by providing the most helpful, informative, legal savvy board of IDCC posters ever.
They've pretty much all left, it seems... not the stock, I don't think, but obviously the board.
IHub IDCC has sunk to new lows. The nonstop jibberish and incessant, sophmoric pull-an-opinion-out-an-azz postings ten times a day, are this board's norm anymore. Crazy.
start with those whose alias born after July 19, 2011.....
"I am afraid however, that most of the "others" will think you are not talking about them..."

"...Now, prior to turning the call over to Art, for a financial overview, I’d like to make a few comments, really on where we’ve come from and where we’re going......
...because there is a considerable amount of misinformation about our customer wins in the market. I’m going to depart from our normal operating procedure and set the record straight. In the absence of this type of misinformation in the future, this isn’t something we’re going to be doing. Now, either directly or through OEMs, OCZ SSDs have recently been deployed to enterprise and data center clients such as AOL, eBay, SAP, Prudential, Marketwire, EdgeCast, ASK.Com, NTT DOCOMO, South Korean Telecom, Boxel, Boeing, Chevron, Carbonite, Honda, Bloomberg.
In regards to our OEM partners, we’ve grown the list substantially in recent months. Our partners include companies such as Dell and HP, SGI, Quanta Cloud Computing, Supermicro, Panzura, Tegile, Astute Networks, Penguin Computing, Wistron, JVL, Flextronics. Now, these are not intended to be and are not at all inclusive list, it’s simply an example of some of our early deployments. It’s worth noting that the majority of these customers are at the very beginning of their deployment in sales cycles, which often takes several quarters to ramp. But over a period of time, they could result in pretty significant growth.
Now, we’re proud of our achievements so far. But mostly, we’re focused on our future. And we’re going to continue to pursue the opportunity before us as aggressively as we have in the past..."
and this is good, too:
"...Turning to guidance, we previously raised our revenue guidance for fiscal year ‘12 to be in the range of $310 million to $345 million. We are now raising that guidance to a range of 320 million to 350 million. Since the first six months accounted for about 152 million, the second half of the year would be in the range of 168 million to 198 million.
Last quarter, we raised our long-term gross margin target from between 28% and 32% to between 30% and 40%. We believe due to recent developments, we expect gross margins to reach the target model during the latter part of the next fiscal year."

That GTT Group did a similar study on the Nortel patents, and issued that press release on April 14th. Seems they now want to capitalize on the action around IDCC
"Global Technology Transfer Group (GTT Group) Announces The Availability Of The Nortel Patent Study Update
Global Technology Transfer Group (GTT Group) is pleased to announce the availability of the Nortel Patent Study Update. The Nortel Patent Study emphasizes high value assets, and monetary valuations associated with each asset in the Nortel Patent Portfolio.
“For parties determining their final bidding strategy the Nortel Patent Study is an invaluable cross reference source to reconfirm prior finding and make any final adjustments”, remarked Michael Lubitz, GTT Group’s CEO and Chairman.

Hi to you, techinvester...
Trust me, Data gave me his own curt reply in a PM. Quite a guy. (I don't need to look up posts from '03...I've held IDCC over a decade and am well aware of the efforts of certain individuals.)
There WAS a lot of information (or misinformation) in the post that Ima copied/pasted. Data read the whole thing and apparently figured Ima was asking only about the last sentence ("I'm assuming your question is in regard to... his final line?...").
Where did Ima ask that? . Ima's response of "Thanks anyway Data.... I am not able to phrase a question properly anymore" indicated to me that the last sentence was not necessarily all that his query was about. That's it....that simple.
Thank you for your reply and courtesy.
Well, I think you phrased a question just fine, and no where did you say you were focusing on that post's last line.
IMO, you were asking Data for his ideas regarding the technology aspects of the entire post re: Intel and Infineon, etc. That's why most people ask or respond to Data....for his knowledge of the industry.... Not usually for his impression of the price of an offer which is what the last line implies.
Glad you're doing ok, Ima, because you are one of the finest long time longs of all.
Samsung To File ITC Complaint Against Apple Over IPhone 5
SEOUL -(Dow Jones)- Samsung Electronics Co. (005930.SE) is set to file a complaint against Apple Inc. (AAPL) with the U.S. International Trade Commission, asking the agency to bar sales of Apple's new iPhone 5 in the U.S.the Korea Economic Daily newspaper reported Friday, citing an unnamed Samsung official.
"Samsung will take a more offensive stance [in] the legal battle with Apple," the newspaper quoted an official at the company as saying. "Samsung will take the legal action [against Apple] either on Oct. 4 or 5, when Apple unveils its new device," the paper added. The report also said that Samsung has dropped the plan to ask a South Korean court to ban the importation and sales of Apple's iPhone 5 device in the domestic market.
A Samsung Electronics spokesman, however, said the company hasn't decided on any legal actions against Apple's new iPhone 5 device for now.
Apple and Samsung have been embroiled in a lengthy string of litigation globally that began in April when Apple filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung, claiming the South Korea electronics company "slavishly" copied its iPad and iPhone.

OT: All who continue to complain about him and others need to just use the ignore feature IHub provides. When I look on IHub and see there are 12 messages, I click on the IDCC page and may only see 3 posts because posters I have on ignore don't show up. You know, a novel idea...they're ignored! The board reads fast and clean, and no wasting my time over their repetitive worthless mumbling. Try it....you'll like it!
He is also scheduled to speak in November at this IP Law & Management Institute (The IP Law & Management Institute is an invitation only event. Wow....the Rambus posts here and especially on IV have been so good the past few days, and today's final closing by Williams was the best I've ever read. I don't own any RMBS at the moment, but for those of you who have held long and strong these many years, I hope you now get your just reward in a huge AT verdict in Rambus' favor.

Yes.....Exact same pattern on three of my other stock holdings.
"However, this is the first time I have seen Intellectual Ventures mentioned as potential bidder..."
I've thought all along this process that Intellectual Ventures will be involved in IDCC's 'strategic alternatives' press release back on July 19. IV group is all about inventions and inventors, and they are fully faceted to gather, protect and monetize patents both offensively and defensivley. Their website is terrific, and a read through past press releases gives insight how they partner up with others. Here's a snip from their blog page:
"IV is challenging the status quo by focusing its business solely on invention and investment in patents. But we think this disruption is an important and necessary step in the development of a fully functioning marketplace for ideas. Our ultimate value proposition is simple: we provide an efficient way for patent holders to get paid for the inventions they own, and in turn, for technology companies to gain easy access to the invention rights they need now or may need as they enter new markets."
