hrbart: IMO, it is a market correction as well as a reaction to the current event of the North Korean nuclear test that has taken its toll on the entire market.
Hopefully, this too will pass and we will resume our elevator climb to the top of the tower!
JMO
It's like somebody dropped a nuclear bomb on the markets!
OMG, the North Koreans exploded one again. Maybe the shorts and North Koreans are working together to bring the market down!
I'm down $60,000 already today.
hrbart: Interesting that a deal was struck on LABOR DAY WEEKEND between IDCC and Huawei. IDCC announced the resolution and deal on the First Business Day after Labor Day weekend.
SO, maybe the vacations are over and our Best In Class sales team has now departed the home office en route to various potential licensees with the instruction and one team in mind --- Namely, get those licensees signed now that we have a base in place.
I hope that on Monday, September 12th there is an announcement of yet another licensee that comes into the fold. Big, Little, or in between, something just before the end of the quarter would bode well with the Huawei signed deal.
JMO
gotcha! I'm all in for anyone offerring $100 per share.
la-idcc-fan: Again, another example of IDCC's way of telling little if anything and confusing the issue with the rest of the story.
I wish they could say something in PLAIN ENGLISH as follows:
Of the $200 million collected, we have:
Allocated $xxx million for prior fiscal year back-payment;
Allocated $yyy million for 1st & 2nd Q 2016 income;
Allocated $zzz million for this (3rd q 2016) income;
Allocated XXXX million as penalty interest, legsal fees, etc. collected;
We have also allocated $YYY million for future income
In addition, the patents acquires have been allocated as follows (and spell out how they would be amortized.
They should use the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) method instead of their typical cryptic and confusing methodology. Make it easier for EVERYONE to understand what the heck they are doing.
JMO
Limejuice: Am I misunderstanding you?
Who would put a BUY on IDCC for $100 when you can buy the shares for $73 plus change today!
Unless you meant to put a buy rating with a price target of $100, then I could understand investors jumping in in anticipation of the huge price increase.
sab: Good accounting 'practices' would have you break up the monies received into 3 or more entries:
1 Entry would be for prior fiscal year (2015 and prior) income being booked as one amount
1 entry would be for current fiscal year's prior quarters (1stQ2016 plus 2ndq2016)
1 entry would be for current fiscal year's quarter (July1 thru Sept 30th, 2016 income
A 4th entry would be for revenue that would be recognized (earned) in the 4th quarter, 2016 (item would go into short-term deferred revenue
A 5th entry would be for revenue that would be recognized (earned) in future fiscal years (2017 and beyond). This amount would go into long term deferred revenues.
aab: Why do that? Past revenues are just that -- money owed for prior periods that was 'collexted' today.
Deferred revenue is payments up front that will be earned in future periods.
The reply would be "... if it is not discussed in the press release I cannot comment further on it..."
I have asked IR several times on various subject matter and that has been his 'PAT' answer (no pun intended)!
JMO
loop: despite what you say
7. Let the company decide on future dividends
la-idcc-fan: as to why the stock price isn't jumping, IMO it is because of the 'Chinese Jig Saw puzzle' that IDCC has painted, namely a press release with what appears to be great news that is written in such a manner that it gives nothing verbage (wording) without the meat (numbers, terms, and details) to support the contract.
This is typical of Interdigital -- give the 'essence' of the contract without spelling out information that analysts and the street can sink its teeth into and formulate an opinion.
Olddog can correct me if I am wrong, but if this deal is 10% of revenues, a meaningful disclosure should be forthcoming on the deal.
JMO
An increase in the dividend is the LAST thing that management will do.
They want to accumulate money for possible share repurchases and investing in other entities. We know that $700 million WILL NOT buy anything of significant value to us, unless it is patents and even then, we won't see appreciation from the purchase.
iMO they should do a special dividend of a measly $1.00 which would decrease the cash balance by a insignificant amount of $35 million or less and mazke shareholders (including funds managers happy.
A $1.00 per share special dividend would certainly not hurt the bank balances and would go a long way in management' showing that it cares for its shareholders AND will be a sign of more things to come.

SO: 71.96 close; $72.15 Intra-day high.
What a way to end the week and start off a 3-day holiday weekend.
Happy Labor Day to all. Don't 'Labor' too hard this weekend.
RE: Guidance -- IDCC has not yet come to an agreement with Huawei on all the contract issues.
They will wait as long as possible in order to include any results of their finalized negotiations in their guidance numbers.
We may not see any guidance this quarter if there is no finality to their negotiations.
SO, it may drag on until the 4th quarter, 2016. But that's OK; we will trickle up slowly until that day comes. I don't see the possibility of much of a pullback because whatever the numbers are and the contract entails, it will mean a positive impact on 2016 earnings, as well as any other possible new licensees contributing to earnings in 2016 and beyond.

sailfreeee: Not me, but I'm glad we reached the $72nd floor of our trip up the Sears (Willis) tower.
Lets hope we close at that level or above.
JMO
M5 Did TC post a link?
hrbrt: Maybe IDCC can open a Chicago office.
About the stair climb, I'll walk the 98 floors (FROM THE TOP DOWN) and meet you on 2nd floor. LOL
hrbsrt: Chicago has its annual stair climb I believe in the Sears (now named Willis) tower.
IDCC may be warming up for the occasion with its attempt to reach the top of the tower.
GO IDCC
JMO
Yahoo early indications BID $71.10 ASK $81.00.
Sign of good things to come today?
Will we make a stop at the $72 floor and pick up more passengers on the way up to the top?
Yesterday's pull back from the intra-day high of $71.98 could easily be breached in a bullish way today.
Where is IDCC's 3rd Quarter guidance?
They must be close to resolving the Huawei matter and want to report 'GOOD' projections.
JMO
Funds managers loading up on IDCC? Could it be that they followed the Huawei matter and now realize that something good will come out of the ARB and licensing of Huawei.
They want to buy in now and show some gains for the end of the September, 2016 (3rd quarter) reporting period. It's good to have a winner in the portfolio.
They may just sit and hold till the end of the 4th quarter approaches, and then liquidate into 2017 if this thing keeps going up.

pochemunyet: and when something 'BIG' starts, I 'MIGHT' start to consider a small exit to make my wife happy.
HAPPY WIFE, HAPPY LIFE!
lol
my3sons87: SO, I am 'guessing' that your 'exit point' is $105 based on the penthouse floor you want to ride up to.
Good guess?
JMO
Well, we reached the 71st floor but only briefly and slid back down to the 70th floor to pick up some more passengers going up to the top.
Volume at 96,000+ shares and we're at 70.86. Have 4.5 hours to climb up to the 71at floor again. Hope we get there at the close.

Location: New York City
Date: September 22, 2016
Time: 10:00 AM
SO, we made it to the 70th floor today with an intra-day high of $70.43 and a close of $70.11.
Some good news on ANY front will bring us up to the next floor. Let's hope that news is big and good and comes tomorrow.
JMO
gejebr3: We're in the skyscraper now. We're on the $70th floor, working our way up, floor by floor to the $100th floor. Beyond the 100th floor are the penthouses.
We need to move up, floor by floor. We may skip a floor or 2 or 3 on the way up, but we are not on an express elevator going straight to the top.
Some passengers may get off on whichever floor they think is appropriate. However, those interested can ride it up to the top and partake in the celebrations up there!

I don't want to sell the stock in this tax year because of unexpected gains on other stock mergers AND miscellaneous income.
I would want to protect my gains and if the stock drops below $70 (say to $60) by January thru March, then put the stock or something like that.
hrbart: Time for some PUTS and CALLS 'REAL EXPERTS' to help with a strtegy.
For example: An exit date AT THE END OF JANUARY or FEBRUARY or MARCH, 2017, (taking into consideration paying the taxes on gains when you file in 2018) to protect the current value of $70 FOR 15,000 TO 20,000 shares.
Given those parameters, what would one expect and do if:
1. Stock falls to $60
2. Stock stays around the $70 level.
3. Stock rises to $80 or more.
Of course, one could always cash out now, take the gain, pay taxes, and move on or wait and see if they want to re-enter later.
JMO
Not quite -- One would be waiting for a $200 share price and another would be looking in the $390 range!
And I would still keep a 'small position' of a few hundred shares just to keep my interests in this stock!
And lastly, the 'chosen few insiders' would probably sell their grants and diversify their holdings.
JMO
How many 'Longs' and 'Old Timers' would be here if the share price traded 'above $94.08 for 20 days within a 30 day period'?
JMO
How can they establish a predictive 5 year and better model if it takes years and years of litigation to get someone to license or renew (ala Nokia/Microsoft, LG, Huawei, ZTE) ?
They may have the engine and transmission, but they don't have the key and gas to start the car, let alone keep it running without having to fight for the gas!'
JMO
m3s: How can we have 'stable income sources with predictive results based on signed licenses' when the company won't tell you if they have signed zny smaller license agreements?
Nor will they tell you (as in the Sharp deal whether the expiration date of the existing license was extended or whether the new agreement expires with the date of the existing agreement.
How can an analyst project out 3 to 5 years if they don't know whaen a license is expiring? Maybe that's why we don't have many analysts following our stock.
JMO
m3s, so why not do a 'reverse split' so that 'By reducing the shares in the market the per share values or relative values would increase?'
Hydro: I'm the one that started the Oreeno recently, in memory and remembrance to Frank 'la ranger'
For a change, there is Joy in Mudfville now as IDC comes 'up to bat' with a strong performance over the past few weeks.
Could be that some 'shorts' are upset with longs finally able to 'rub it in'.
It's no different than the 'screaming buy' and '$200 stock price' comments.
I thought it was better than criticizing management for their secretive contract terms and cryptic releases that one can't tell what they really mean.
Maybe soon our 'price targets' or a buyout will be here and we can all reap the benefits and move on. Here's hoping!
JMO
Short interest up only 13,500 shares, which IMO would indicate that the shorts may be afraid to short, even at thes record high levels.
Could their logic be that the share price will move higher in the next weeks or months?
Time will tell!
Gamco, looks like IDCC has received 150 patents for calendar year 2016.
Not a bad number.
But WM Said we would have Huawei in the 3rd quarter. So, I'm holding him to his promise.
