Alea...don´t forget FDE and file/folder encryption are COMPLEMENTARY. FDE is worthless while you are locked in and the system is running. Don´t be sure about selling ETS as a stand alone solution HAS/WILL fail(ed).

Not sure, if I understood your post, I´m responding. but let me try.
The enryption is made by a HW encryption unit on the drive. All runs onthefly. If you´re locked in you can access and COPY the data to NON encrypted storage media.
That means the ACCESS TO THE DRIVE is RELEVANT, NOTHING OTHER.

Dell solutions tour Vienna 5/4/2007....
to all shareholders!
We had the options discussion, where we ALL forgot what Wave is about, so I´ll try to tell you my impressions of the DST in Vienna avoiding to hurt the NDA.
Just a few points to get us back where we were before the options issue...
We know Dell changes its series all years, so when I´m saying we´ll see new Latitudes, we all know what I mean and we can calculate WHEN they will arrive. Since all of them where presented with Vista, I´m glad to see we´re still in the BOX.
Same for ALL other product lines from Dell for 2007. Some models which came without TPMs, now will have TPMs in 2007....
Wave was prominently introduced as THE Dell security partner.
FDE drives will come at DELL soon, and having said this you should know that I don´t mean the definition of a WAVOID SOON!
That means, that Wave has solved the OVERALL industry problem of the sleep mode for DELL. To explain for those who want to read, otherwise please skip....
Online...no explanation needed. Data is encrypted, but worthless, since data can be accessed.
Shut down....preboot authentication via EDTM(by WAve) to access the drive and get access to the encrypted data.
Hibernate...similar to shut down, harddisc is parked, screen shut down, main memory cleaned. Preboot authentication necessary!
Sleep mode......harddisc stopped but working, screen offline, mainmemory online, power save on. NO preboot necessary, that means harddisc is online and ready to submit data. NO preboot necessary - WEAK.... BUT FIXED NOW, IMO preboot authentication after sleep mode activated, without BIOS touch.
So where are we?
Sitting on about 1M/Q revenues in the center of TC, waiting for companies to turn on things they have ALREADY BOUGHT AND PAID!
Make your bets and don´t forget WHERE and WHO we are!
A nice weekend to ALL

Alea....with a removeable device as ROOT of TRUST, you would lose the machine authentication capability. That is Waves business about. An "USB-TPM" would act like a SmartCard for user authentication. IMO using the FDE on legacy machines as root of trust is questionable enough since these discs are very easy to switch.
TPMs flood the market fast enough, I wish the management software would have this pace!LOL

TG....RE: bundling and how it works.
Wave has several bundling arrangements with TPM manufacturers and OEMs and now one with a storage manufacturer. We have to differ these two types of bundlings. While the OEM (DELL, GTW, INTEL) HAS decided to offer ETSL as a security solution, the TPM and storage manufacturer has to wait for the decision of the OEM (in the FDE case ASI and Tarox), IF they need ESC or not. We´ll see similar deals concerning FDE support in the future with MANY other OEMs IMO, since we have the ONLY solution to manage these drives right now.
When Winbond is shipping to Lenovo or BRCM to HP there will be NO ESC delivered with the TPMs since Lenovo has its proprietary solution and HP leaves their BRCM TPM equipped machines UNSUPPORTED (for NOW IMO).
Therefore BRCM didn´t show up with revenues for Wave like STMicro.
This doesn´t mean that we have no bundling deal, it´s just in the hands of the OEM, if they need a solution or not. AND IF they need a FDE management solution they WILL use Waves ETDM and NO other product. THATS the deal!

Seagate FDE / ETDM......
this is a dated articel but a very detailled description.
A Laptop Circle of Trust
Laptop computers are quickly becoming standard-issue equipment for enterprise workforces across the globe, but the productivity gained from this added mobility comes at a price: increased exposure to theft, loss and damage.
Luckily, IT managers seeking to safeguard mobile data have a growing number of options at their disposal.
One such option is Seagate's fully encrypted Momentus FDE.2. On March 12, Seagate began shipping the drive to ASI Computer Technologies to be used in notebook PCs with hardened security. ASI is a hardware component distributor catering to white-box system integrators and is using the disks in machines branded for sale under the integrators' names.
The Momentus FDE.2 employs a dedicated ASIC to process the drive's AES 128-bit encryption on the fly. This enables SATA 1.5G bps transfer speeds on the 5,400rpm drive while minimizing load on a host machine's CPU. The drives will come in 80, 120 and 160GB capacities.
Seagate officials claim that the Momentus FDE.2's native hardware-based encryption gives it a performance edge over software-based encryption programs such as Microsoft Windows Vista's BitLocker and TrueCrypt, an open-source encryption application.
IT managers will be glad to know that Seagate's hardware-based encryption is always turned on and, perhaps more importantly, users cannot turn it off. After all, no security scheme is effective without consistent application in the field. Moreover, full disk encryption relieves the burden on users to remember to save sensitive files to specific folders or volumes on the drive.
To complete the circle of trust, ASI has incorporated Wave Systems' Embassy Trust Suite management tools. Wave's software handles management of keys and passwords, TPMs (trusted platform modules) and authentication with biometric, smart card and Windows domain logins.
According to Lark Allen, Wave Systems' executive vice president of corporate development, Wave has licensed software to most TPM chip manufacturers, and the company's Embassy software suite supports all existing TPMs. However, the current version does not support single sign-on. Therefore, users logging in with a fingerprint scan will be prompted for a password when starting up their systems and each time after the hard drive is power cycled.
Wave officials indicated that they would be working with OEMs and BIOS vendors to add that functionality in the future.
IT administrators can also access Seagate's DriveTrust security features built into the Momentus firmware with Wave's Embassy software. For example, the Momentus can store login and password pairs for as many as four users and four administrators. Regular user privileges are limited to log-in and password changes.
Administrators can add or remove users, assign recovery passwords and perform the "crypto erase" function to quickly and safely repurpose or retire disks storing sensitive data......

To all.......
having read all posts over the last few days, I´m pleased to see WAVX in the top ranking of IHUB again, as I´m pleased to see many NO votes. We HAVE to send a SIGNAL to management. PLEASE make your vote, since we can´t be sure that those voting NO here will vote at all.
Since me English is too bad to understand the following sentences of the PROXY, I´m not sure if abstention have no effect.
"Abstentions with regard to the election of the nominees for director will be excluded entirely from the vote and will have no effect on the outcome. Abstentions with regard to the amendments to the 1994 Employee Stock Option Plan and the 1994 Non-Employee Directors Plan will be treated as shares of Common Stock that are present and entitled to vote for purposes of determining the number of shares of Common Stock present and entitled to vote with respect to those particular matters, but will not be counted as a vote in favor of such matter. Accordingly, an abstention from voting on either of those matters will have the same legal effect as a vote against such matter."
TIA for any help here!
IMO Wavx is on it´s way to success, no doubt about it, and we should come back to our normal DD. Nevertheless we cant let management pass with ALL things they WANT.
Thanx to Snack for your efforts and the survey and to all for expressing their opinions!
For me, I´ll go back to business as usual, since I made my decision on 4/19/2007 and never changed it.
