Hey elmeR, since you are so positive on the propects for inteL and its shareS; you are no doubt buying more. Are you buying from : BARRETT CRAIG R, VADASZ LESLIE L, or CHUN SHEN CHEN JASON ? As even yoU can see: http://www.nasdaq.com/asp/holdings.asp?mode=&kind=&symbol=AMD&symbol=INTC&symbol=&am.... TheY have been dumping a good number if theiRs lately

:)
Dan, stop holding back. PULEEEZE tell us what you really think.
OH ! Leave him alone. Let him have hope :)
SI loads flawlessly quickly for me all the time. I just tried it again several times.
I have a cable modem and pages load pretty much instantly. I am in Rockland County BTW
For what it is worth, possibly nothing; I think that a "BUYING PANIC" in AMD shares may start soon. Too many things are on setting at once for the prevailing ANALysts' sentiment to persist unaltered much longer.
On the other hand....
He really is harmless. As time goes on fewer and fewer wil pay him any serious heed. Just regard him as the inteL sideshow that he is. As events play out he may completely self destruct. Watching it should be fun.
Enough things seem to be working out for AMD at one time that the market may readjust its valuation sooner than you may expect.
This one is worth it. Be patient.
OH WELL : One of the quiet beneficiaries in this merger is AMD, which lost Gateway some time ago when the PC maker went Intel-only. eMachines is one of AMD's biggest clients, and it has made a good business selling low-cost products based on AMD technology. As the combined company focuses on cost and increased competition in retail, AMD again becomes a strategic partner for Gateway; the merger could increase AMD's sales and expand Gateway's tool set.

I also would not underestmate the value of AMD's engineering alliance with IBM.
This time, indeed, it IS different.
I submit that not owning AMD here is patently stupid. AMD's recent market moves reflect relative fluctuations in market perceptions of small deltas in its valuation, but about a baseline that is completely erroneous. I submit that AMD common is so undervalued that it will some day be viewed as one of the classic market inefficiencies of all time. Watch it over the next two to three years. It will probably take at least that long to work itself out. I will not mind, however, if it takes much less time :)
(edit2) As follows are arguably the most dangerous five words in investing: IT IS DIFFERENT THIS TIME !

Attacking inteL on all three fronts, Ruiz, IBM, SUN, Cray, Probably Gateway and so on
It is not even close to in the price yet.
It is mine. Larger than ever.
Not if it runs like SH*T !
Unless, Keith, you have to unshake your head.
It is amazing for such a new chip. Imagine the potential when it finally catches on :)
Well here is a new one then: http://www.sc.army.mil/text/newst.html
I suspect that you might do well to contact the ihub powers that be and suggest that PRIVATE MESSAGES become a non premium service. If it were, a great deal of the noise on the thread could be eliminated in favor of this means and the overall quality of the thread would improve. Ironically I tried to communicate this to you in such a message since I do not think that it actually belongs on the thread.
You might want to have a look at this post of a yet unsubstantiated report: http://www.siliconinvestor.com/stocktalk/msg.gsp?msgid=19679669
Do not get your hopes up. It is probably one of AMD's last acts before declaring bankrupcy during its CC on the 20th :)
Obviously not all fabs are equal and it depends on which fabs that you are comparing. IBM's best fabs are obviously better than inteL's or AMD's best fabs for SOI .

It is part of a pattern that he is fostering of eliminating fixed costs in favor of variable costs.

(edit) The reasons are manifold. If you do not need the capability, I suspect that many very good 32 bit computers will become bargains fairly soon after the introduction of Athlon64. Wait, it will be much more fun than jumping in and wishing that you had not.
I am not sure just what eats at the "genius", but he appears to have issues and an agenda. He really does still belong at the Ford Motor Company. Listening to him might well bring regrets. Avoid buying an "Edsel"; Waiting at a time of great changes is virtually always very good advice.

re: "I wouldn't hold out for the 64 bit chip."
Perhaps, you would not; but the vast majority of those in the know will. I repeat: genius...you belong at Ford.

It is very amusing to see the NiceGuy's optimism on the SI thread ridiculed by some on this thread. How ironic if it turns out to actually be understatemant. All in due course.

Honestly, something else...I am not sure what, was distracting me.

Interesting 4-Way Opteron System:
Zeus Web Server Breaks Performance Record
June 23, 2003 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Zeus Technology (zeus.com) announced today that the Zeus Web Server and Zeus Load Balancer will be optimized for the 64-bit AMD Opteron processor.
The optimization efforts are part of the Zeus Performance Engineering Partnership for Zeus Web Server and Zeus Load Balancer now available in AMD64 architecture implementations.
Using a 4p four-way AMD Opteron processor-based server, Zeus Web Server scored a SPECweb99_SSL score of 3498.
"Servers based on AMD Opteron processors running Zeus Web Server and Zeus Load Balancer provide the industry's fastest 4p server performance," said Ben Williams, AMD's director of the server/workstation business segment.
According to the company, the test result was the fastest four-processor SPECweb99_SSL score ever, outpacing all previous eight processor SPECweb99_SSL scores.
"With commodity hardware running at this speed it no longer makes sense to purchase dedicated hardware to perform load balancing," said John Paterson, CEO of Zeus Technology. "Software load balancing solutions when optimized for performant industry standard processors like AMD Opteron processors can perform just as adequately as hard wired units, but with the flexibility and upgradeability that only software can offer."

How large could this niche be ? Is Zeus a significant factor ?

re: "I am wondering if anybody will build a beast like this"
My suspicion is that we will not have to wait very long and that for many applications, it will be amazing.

Cheap Chips Aid Move to Develop Supercomputers
Dow Jones, Monday, June 23, 2003 at 01:31
A movement to build powerful computers from inexpensive components is gaining ground, and new chips from Intel Corp. (INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) could accelerate the pace, Monday's Wall Street Journal reported.
According to a semiannual study being released today, 119 of the 500 fastest machines in the world use Intel microprocessor chips. That is more than double the 56 Intel-based machines counted six months earlier on the so-called Top500 list, which is produced by researchers at supercomputer centers in California, Tennessee and Germany.
Supercomputers, used for tasks ranging from designing nuclear weapons to making movies, originally were made from proprietary circuitry. Most of the fastest machines still use thousands of high-end chips -- typically made by Hewlett-Packard Co. (HWP) or International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) -- and special connections to pass data among the chips at high speed. Machines that use many electronic brains at once are often called massively parallel systems, or clusters.
The latest trend is to use building blocks from personal computers and inexpensive servers, including Intel Pentium or Xeon microprocessors and standard accessory chips. Such"commodity"clusters include a massive system at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory that is the third-most-powerful in the world, according to the new Top500 list.
Commodity clusters are a major focus of an industry conference beginning tomorrow in San Jose, Calif. They benefit from competition in the PC market that brings rapid performance improvements. Intel, for example, today is boosting the top speed of its Pentium 4 line of chips to 3.2 gigahertz from 3.06 gigahertz.
