Top major currency this year:
the Canadian dollar
The Canadian dollar has ended 2019 as the best performing major currency this year against the US dollar, with a total return of nearly 6 per cent, once interest rates are taken into account, writes Eva Szalay.
The country’s central bank has been one of the few policymakers to avoid cutting rates this year, against a backdrop of other banks easing policy.
At 1.75 per cent, the Bank of Canada’s key interest rate far outstrips other big economies, making the currency a standout for investors.
Exchange rate moves in the Canadian dollar are also heavily correlated with oil prices, which have rallied over the past few months.
This rebound translated into strength in the currency, said Jonas Goltermann, a senior markets economist at research firm Capital Economics.
Mr Golterman said in a December note that while the BoC had been relatively hawkish compared with other big peers, he did not see much room for rate rises next year even if oil prices continued to climb — as global growth remained weak.
But if other major central banks continued to ease next year, just staying on hold should benefit the Canadian dollar. “This suggests to us that it will outperform, even though we don’t anticipate a major surge,” said Mr Golterman.

Why Canada's cannabis bubble burst
More than a year ago, Canada made recreational cannabis legal. So why are people still buying it on the black market?

Italy legalizes weaker form of cannabis
Italy's parliament legalized the production and sale of a weaker form of cannabis this week, ending months of uncertainty for farmers and sellers.
Tobacconists and specialized shops will be allowed to stock cannabis products, which must not contain more than 0.5 percent of the psychoactive compound THC, from January 1.

Vape lung is on the decline as CDC report fixes blame on oily additive
The CDC has issued a set of reports showing that the lung disease associated with vaping seems to be declining from peak rates, and that Vitamin E acetate seems — as speculated early on — to be the prime suspect for the epidemic. The affliction has cost at least 54 lives and affected 2,506 people across the nation.

Huge news.... this will help thousands upon thousands sufferers in the United Kingdom... and (IMO) this will bob on into Europe once the UK is fast-tracking it... we could see big GW moves in Europe early next year...
Cannabis-based drug for epilepsy Epidiolex to be fast-tracked from 6 January into NHS after NHS deal with manufacturer, allowing thousands of people to be prescribed the drugs, including children with severe epilepsy.
Last month the NHS struck a deal with the manufacturer GW Pharmaceuticals to bring down the price of Epidiolex, which has been approved by the European medicines agency for use in children over the age of two who suffer from seizures associated with two rare and severe forms of epilepsy – Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) and Dravet syndrome.
NHS England has said it will speed the process through so that the drugs will be obtainable through doctors from 6 January.

thanks, Rutt, very interesting points you make.
Two more new national polls show that a majority of Americans are in favor of legalizing cannabis.
A Fox News survey, which involved phone interviews with 1,000 adults from December 8-11, showed that 63 percent of respondents support legalizing “the recreational use of marijuana on a national level,” while 34 percent oppose the policy.
A Marist poll, conducted in collaboration with NPR and PBS, surveyed 1,744 Americans from December 9-11. The results similarly showed 62 percent of respondents saying it is a “good idea” to legalize cannabis, with 33 stating it would be a “bad idea.”

Is hope being wasted on President Trump legalising cannabis in the USA...?
"Voters who supported President Trump in the 2016 election expressed greater opposition to the policy than Republicans and Republican-leaning independents as a whole. Forty percent of Trump supporters said they back legalization, compared to 55 percent who said it was a bad idea."
Do Americans need a young, or a socialist, Democratic candidate to become president before cannabis is federally legalised in the US…?
"Given this widespread support, particularly among Democratic voters, it’s clear why the issue has become a major talking point for the majority of the party’s 2020 presidential candidates, almost all of whom back legalization, with notable exceptions of former Vice President Joe Biden and billionaire Michael Bloomberg."
