The Automotive X Prize competition has dragged on for several years now, and we're pleased to report that a "shakedown" elimination round of sorts has narrowed the field for development of the hyper-efficient car of the future to 22 teams with 27 vehicles.
They started out with 28 teams with 36 vehicles. Of those, 24 participated in the shakedown. So two teams were shaken out.
OK, so that's not a lot of elimination but at least it's a start. The competition, sponsored by Progressive Insurance, offers $10 million in prizes to automakers who can create cars that achieve at least 100 miles a gallon.
Now all eyes move from the "shakedown" to the "knockout," the first of three qualifying stages that will generate more hype and press releases. The knockout round will be held June 20-30 at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich.
Those making the cut include:
Mainstream Class Teams:
Mainstream Class vehicles must carry four or more passengers, have four or more wheels, and offer a 200-mile range.
American HyPower, Centennial, Colo. (Gasoline, Hydrogen)
BITW Technologies, Palmyra, Ind. (Biodiesel)
Cornell 100+ MPG Team, Ithaca, N.Y. (Biodiesel)*
Edison2, Charlottesville, Va. (E85)
Enginer, Troy, Mich. (Gasoline + Steam)**
Global-E, Mandeville, La. (Gasoline & Electric)**
Illuminati Motor Works, Virden, Ill. (Electric)*
Liberty Motors Group, Botkins, Ohio (Gasoline)
West Philly Hybrid X (EVX), Philadelphia (Gasoline)
Alternative Class Teams:
Alternative Class vehicles must carry two or more passengers and allow for a 100-mile range.
Side-by-Side Seating

Team EVX, Dallas (Electric)
West Philly Hybrid X (EVX), Philadelphia (Biodiesel)
Western Washington University, Bellingham, Wash. (Gasoline)**
ZAP, Santa Rosa, Calif. (Electric)

Edison2, Charlottesville, Va. (E85)
FVT Racing, Maple Ridge, British Columbia (Gasoline)*
Spira, Banglamung, Chonburi, Thailand (Gasoline)
Tango (Commuter Cars), Spokane, Wash. (Electric)
X-Tracer Team Switzerland, Uster, Switzerland (Electric)
The competition consisted of technical inspections and on-track safety tests, including zero-to-60 mile per hour acceleration and braking tests, an emergency double lane change avoidance maneuver, and durability requirements.
"These shakedown tests rightly set a very high standard of safety and performance," said Eric Cahill, senior director of the contest. "This was not meant to be easy. If it were, it would have already been done. We expect to see additional eliminations during the knockout stage."
The finals will conclude in late July.

Profits in Oil Spill Clean Up (BP, PG, ASH, EMN, NLC, CLH, NR, ARJ, MOPN)

Cleaning up messes has grown into a big business since the 1970s. There are a lot of small and medium-sized businesses that get involved in environmental remediation for everything from cleaning up EPA-designated Superfund sites to washing noxious weed seeds off fire trucks used to battle forest fires. The disaster that destroyed the Deepwater Horizon semi-submersible rig that was drilling a deepwater well for BP plc (NYSE:BP) has so far leaked more than 100,000 barrels of crude into the Gulf of Mexico and a number of companies that have seen their shares rise on the bet that they could see higher revenues and profits as a result.
The remediation players include large companies like Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG); medium-cap companies like Ashland Inc. (NYSE:ASH), Eastman Chemical Co. (NYSE:EMN), Nalco Holding Co. (NYSE:NLC), and Clean Harbors, Inc. (NYSE:CLH); and small-caps Newpark Resources, Inc. (NYSE:NR) and Arch Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE:ARJ). There’s even a OTC stock, MOP Environmental (OTC:MOPN) that is likely to benefit from the clean-up.
Procter & Gamble makes Dawn dishwashing detergent, which is the cleaner of choice for wildlife covered with oil. The company has already delivered 2,000 bottles of the detergent to the Gulf coast, and more will likely be needed. The impact on P&G’s bottom line should only be minimal, but this will give the Dawn brand a nice boost and it would be unlike P&G to miss a chance like this to build its image.
Ashland, Eastman, Nalco, and Arch make specialty chemicals that are being used to disperse the oil slick formed by the leaking well. Nalco has already supplied more than 300,000 gallons of its dispersant to BP and the others are undoubtedly shipping the stuff as well. Ashland provides hazardous waste removal services as well as chemicals. Eastman and Arch make specialty chemicals and solvents that can be used to clean up oil slicks.
Clean Harbors offers ships and crews to the Gulf coast and has been contracted by government agencies to provide logistics and support services. The company today released an update to its expected revenues as a result of its work on the spill. Clean Harbors now forecasts an increase of second quarter revenues of 15%-20% above the First Call estimates of $352 million.
There are more than 650 vessels now in the Gulf to work on containing and cleaning up the oil. Over 1.25 million feet of containment boom is already in place (that’s more than 235 miles worth) and some 440,000 feet of absorbent boom has also been deployed. About 285,000 feet of containment boom and 900,000 feet of absorbent boom is still available for deployment. Almost double the amount of deployed containment boom is already on order from various suppliers, mostly small privately held companies along the Gulf coast.
One company that makes absorbent booms is MOP Environmental Solutions, Inc. MOP booms can absorb the floating oil and the oil can then be extracted from the boom material. The boom itself is recyclable. The company announced in a press release that it has lowered the price on its boom in response to the Gulf spill.
While all these companies are likely to see a revenue boost as a result of their abilities to aid in the clean up of the Gulf, the longer term prospects might be even brighter. It’s almost certain that new federal regulations will be adopted not only to make deepwater drilling safer, but that companies involved in drilling will be required to be better prepared for an a spill. That requirement will provide an opportunity for these companies to do even more business both with the federal government and with the oil companies that will surely be picking up the tab.
With the exception of Clean Harbors, all these companies are trading nearly flat or down today, probably due to the news that BP is having some success with its efforts to contain the spill.

MOP Update #5 of Gulf Oil Spill
Friends:
The news release below is being released on the wires as we speak. There are several points worth making that do not appear in the news release.
We are deeply concerned about the environmental consequences of the Gulf spill. We hope that by setting an example by lowering prices on our booms we can get other boom manufacturers to make an effort to control prices in the face of this National environmental emergency.
Because MOP booms are 4 times more effective (pick up 4x more oil) and made of recycled materials that have a very stable raw material cost, we are able to retain cost/price stability. This gives us an advantage and allows us to continue to produce MOP booms at the reduced costs.
Make no mistake about it, while this decision is a response to a national environmental emergency, it is still a hard headed business decision. We expect to capture market share with this announcement and share-of-mind by bringing it to the attention of the national media and decision makers that MOP booms are more cost-effective and performance-efficient than any other boom on the market.

For Immediate Release
MOP Environmental Sets Precedent by Lowering Prices on its Recyclable Oil Recovery Booms for use in Gulf Oil Spill
BATH, NH, May 13, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- MOP Environmental Solutions, Inc. (MOPN.PK). In the wake of demand driven price hikes, MOP Environmental is setting a precedent by lowering prices on their Recyclable Oil Recovery Booms (MOP Booms) to assist in the Gulf Oil Spill Crisis. With the growing harm to the environment each day, MOP Environmental now offers their products below a fair price to protect the fragile environment threatened by the Gulf Oil Spill.
“MOP Booms use MOP Environmental’s Patented Green Sorbent MOP 201. MOP 201 is made completely from Recycled Materials and is immune to the market fluctuations and scarcities that are driving up costs and availability of booms currently being utilized in the Gulf. MOP Booms are four times more absorbent than their competitor’s booms and is fully Recyclable after oil recovery. MOP Booms are the Responsible Environmental Choice and the most Cost-Effective and Performance-Efficient Booms on the Market.” Stated Mr. Charles Diamond, MOP Environmental Solutions President & CEO.
THE ULTIMATE OFFSHORE OIL SPILL CONTINGENCY PLAN:
Mr. Diamond continued by stating, “Booms are part of the solution. However, the fastest most effective way to clean up this spill and protect the fragile coastal ecosystems, is to blast the oil spill with our low cost, Environmentally Safe MOP “oil only” sorbent. Using our powerful MOP CANNONS. MOP can be deployed under and/or over oil spills on water, even in stormy weather. Once deployed it provides safety to aquatic life, birds, beaches, and ecosystems, completely neutralizing all the potential harmful effects of an oil spill and associated financial loss.”
Go ahead, do the math says Mr. Diamond, “One trailer load of our MOP Maximum Oil Pickup retailing at $32,000 can capture and recover up to 75,000 gallons of oil in just four hours. The oil can be retrieved for re-use at a corresponding value of about $115,000.” Just four MOP-CANNONS can stay well ahead of the oil spill of 5,000 barrels a day. MOP stops the harm, and can even change a loss into a PROFIT while safely protecting the environment. With MOP sorbent MOP-CANNONS and MOP-HARVESTOR on any offshore oilrig, you can quickly and easily neutralize an oil spill as fast as it happens… Quite simply, MOP offers the ULTIMATE OFFSHORE OIL SPILL CONTINGENCY PLAN!”

The case for allowing certain loose sorbent to be used in the Gulf has been presented to NOAA by Senator Jeanne Shaheen. (D-NH) They have requested that they look over our documents regarding the use of MOP sorbent specifically.
Containment Booms vs Absorption Booms
One thing that has been very confusing to a lot of people is that there are two distinct types of booms being deployed in the Gulf. Containment booms that hold back oil but do not absorb any oil and absorption booms that absorb oil.
MOP makes only absorption booms. Our booms are 4 times as absorptive as any other booms being deployed. Right now the Coast Guard and BP are focusing on containment booms because the spill has gotten to be so out of control that they are trying to prevent it from moving south into the Gulf stream. Within the next few days we expect them to turn their attention toward absorption booms.

Automotive X-Prize: Zap Alias can stop, swerve at MIS
by Sebastian Blanco (RSS feed) on May 9th 2010 at 6:12PM
Zap Alias – Click above for high-res image gallery
Zap had some things easier and some things harder at the Shakedown stage of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X-Prize last week. The team's three-wheeled Alias vehicle easily passed the accident avoidance course at 46 miles per hour and, given that the X-Prize's events at this point are pass/fail, didn't need to try again at a higher speed. Driver Al Unser Jr., though, was convinced that the Alias is capable of passing the test as a higher speed. The Alias also passed the 60-0 mph deceleration test on the first attempt, but the car's clutch was slipping "quite seriously," in Unser's words, and so had a hard time passing the 0-60 acceleration test (as of late Wednesday, we're still waiting for an update).
Zap, unlike some of the other teams at the Michigan International Speedway, is actually selling electric vehicles while the competition is going on. Zap co-founder and chairman emeritus Gary Starr said:
We've had to switch projects in mid-stream a few times because we're multiple projects. We have an on-going business that we're shipping electric vehicles out every week. We're working seven days a week, 12-15 hour days now.
This pace will continue for the foreseeable future. In the window between the Shakedown stage and Knockout stage in late June, Zap will be working on the USPS electric delivery van, an electric taxi project and the regular delivery of the company's electric vehicle line. "We're doing a lot for a little company," Starr said.
But back to the Alias. The vehicle Zap is using in the competition was built in 45 days, Unser said, because Zap didn't decided to enter the X-Prize until quite late. The trike is still evolving, "They're always tweaking," Starr said, adding:
We designed this vehicle to be very cost-effective. Some people got a half-million dollar motor drive systems around here. Our goal is to produce a vehicle we can produce in very small quantities for a reasonable price, so we don't have the biggest motor. We might have the smallest motor here, but it's also one of the lowest-cost ones. Originally, that was the design goal of not only our [vehicle] but also the X-Prize. It's changed a little bit over time. They have various performance tests that go beyond Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. That wasn't originally our path, but now we're adding and altering things to do it a little bit differently.
Zap built the Alias to meet the FMVSS rules for motorcycles, but the X-Prize uses it's own blend of motorcycle and automobile rules. The Alias has a new reverse back-up light, for example. Motorcycles don't need back-up lights, but the three-wheeled trikes in the competition do need them. Starr said the rules were changed within the last two weeks or so.
Another change, this one decided on by the company, is that the car will likely have more powerful motors In the June knockout tests, Unser said, "and we're going to be more prepared." Unser added that what's happening during the shakedown is giving teams a chance to be ready next month:
It's about the X-Prize foundation learning about the competitors, letting the competitors learn about the X-Prize foundation and getting to see what's here, what's showing up.
Unser has had a relationship with Zap since January 2008. A friend turned him onto the Alias when it was still just a drawing (remember those days?) and, when the NADA convention happened in San Francisco that year, Zap invited him to attend. Since then:
it's an honor they asked me to drive it to begin with. It's wonderful to be a part of this whole X-Prize competition. Quite honestly, I feel the addiction to oil has to stop. If it doesn't stop, it's going to stop eventually with the reserves that we have [declining] so alternative fuels have to be on the forefront of automobiles.
Unser was recently in Sao Paolo, where he saw the result of pollution first-hand:
I'm seeing emissions everywhere now. It's something I do realize, as far a mainstream transportation, this is not going to happen in my generation, but maybe my grandchildren, or their grandchildren, electric cars or some type of alternative fuel will be the way of their transportation. So, to be a part of it, right now, is very exciting for me. I truly feel I'm part of history right now.

Waynes latest update
this has probably been posted.. But here is a latest email rec. from Wayne. MAY 11TH 9:30 P.M
MOP Update #4
Our multi-tiered approach to getting further involved in the Gulf spill continued over the weekend. MOP sorbent, booms and RESCUE Soil cleaning patent were presented at several high level meetings between members of the US Military – including the Coast Guard, BP and others.?
Rob King, Florida Sales Rep., is on the Ground on Dauphin Island as we speak bringing MOP to the attention of anyone that he can get to listen.
Mark Hearon, Sales Rep from Mississippi, is on the ground in Alabama at the convention Center. According to him it’s a madhouse and he even had to submit to a background check by the Secret Service!
In addition to the Boom bids being negotiated by MOP we are also working to open up the ground on the issue of loose sorbent. Specifically the MOP Sorbent. Right now the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued a directive banning the use of loose absorbants on the spill. This, despite the fact that they have made the environmentally unsound decision to allow the use of loose dispersants that simply move the problem to a different (and harder to reach) venue, including the ocean floor. The tar balls that are showing up on the beaches are a direct result of using the dispersants and they are much harder to clean up than liquid oil.
We think you will agree that the MOP loose sorbent should be allowed for use on the spill after you read this alert. We will not give up on convincing the Coast Guard to do the responsible thing and allow loose sorbents. But the success of our efforts in the Gulf are in no way dependent upon it, we simply feel that our responsibility to the planet should also be a part of our efforts.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
The Planet Needs Your Help! Please help us get this information out!
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
According to the staff of Environmental Information Office at the Spill Response Command Center:
The Marine Biologists at NOAA have made a decision to ban the use of loose absorbants – even those certified as safe on open water by EPA,
1 container of MOP Sorbent, certified safe for use in open water, can contain (lock up) 75,000 gallons of spilled oil. By comparison it takes 23,076 6’’ x 10’ polypropylene booms to accomplish the same amount of spill cleanup.
MOP Booms, which can and will be used on the spill are 4 times more effective than Polypropylene booms but even using high absorption booms, like those we produce, would still require more than 5000 booms to rival one truckload of loose absorbent.
1 Container of MOP costs $32,000
22,076 Booms cost: $865,350
The spill companies do exceedingly well while the problem grows. They love this system because many of them build their profits on a long, slow, and expensive cleanup process.
MOP is aggressive, oleophyllic and hydrophobic. It rejects water and locks up oil.
MOP will never sink below the surface, If it is blown in below the surface it will rise to the surface and will not sink , even when saturated with oil.
A Ban on Loose Sorbent is a Huge Mistake
They are already spraying loose dispersant which is a loose product that will exacerbate the long-term problem. Already tar balls are showing up on the beaches from using the dispersants. Why not apply loose absorbent that will actually contain the spill?
We need to push the Coast Guard, BP and others to get the NOAA directive overturned.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Shareholder Question
A MOP shareholder recently wrote to us with the question below:
I am an investor in MOPN and am very impressed with all I have seen but I have one question. Why is MOP not listed on the US National Contingency website?
Our response:
That listing is for products other than natural sorbents. They are generally products that are not green and contain chemicals, such as the dispersants that are being used. We contend that dispersants make the problem worse in the long run because they simply hide the problem. ??But the letter got us thinking about whether this list in some ways was equally confusing to those working to clean up the spill.
The irony of this is that the EPA has no list of safe, recycled, and sustainable solutions to oil spills on their website but they do have a full listing of all of the items that have enough chemicals in them to warrant testing. By default they may be making the unsustainable solutions the “preferred” ones.
Over the weekend we put together a letter and documentation for all of the contacts that we have made in the past few weeks. We will be sending them a letter bringing this to their attention.
MOP Booms Now Price Competitive with Polypropylene?Pickup capacity becomes the new “Choice-Point”
MOP has always had a competitive edge for discriminating buyers who made a comparison on all the facts. Our booms have a pickup capacity about 2-4x better than any of the other booms on the market. On a price per pound of pickup ratio we have also blown away the competition. However, manufacturers of polypropylene booms have been very good at marketing their booms on price alone . . . avoiding any discussion of pickup capacity. As long as they were able to manufacture cheap booms and not have to compare the pickup capacity, they could always find plenty of folks who would not ask the right questions and just purchase the poly booms.
Now a dramatic increase in raw material costs for Poly products (this week rising from 20 cents a pound to $2.00 per pound) is bringing price parity to the market allowing us to fight it out on quality and pickup quantity. That’s a battle we welcome because no one comes close to MOP’s 30-1 pickup ratio. Furthermore we believe we have stable raw material costs and should be able to continue to offer MOP booms at the same prices. We are already getting requests for MOP booms as a replacement for Poly booms. We believe that once businesses try the superior MOP Booms that they will stay with us, even if Poly prices go back down at some future point in time.
It looks quite certain however, that prices will remain high for quite some time due to the spill. Raw material providers who have been through the Exxon Valdez spill predict a tight market for 6 -9 months - and that is it they plug the leaking well soon.
The big tar balls showing up on the beaches are the first signs of the environmental damage wreaked by the Oil spill and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s decision to use dispersants on the spill. Dispersants just shift the problem around and set up a series of environmental timebombs that will go off over the coming years.

Oil Clean-Up Stocks Could Rally Higher as Oil Spill Worsens
With the unprecedented oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico continuing to make headlines, many oil spill clean-up stocks like MOP Environmental Solutions, Inc. (PINK:MOPN),
Currently, the oil spill is leaking some 5,000 barrels of crude per day into the Gulf of Mexico, as the first waves of oil wash on shore in Louisiana and other coastal states. Meanwhile, BP’s efforts to install a shutoff valve on one of the three underwater leaks are a difficult endeavor that many engineers say may not work.
Estimated costs for the oil spill have ranged from under $1.1 billion by analysts at Citigroup to $3.5 billion by Morgan Stanley, but true estimates are difficult to assess until the well has been capped or a second well can be drilled to relieve the pressure. As a result, many oil clean-up stocks have been rallying higher as the potential clean-up costs continue to increase.
MOP Environmental Solutions, Inc. (MOPN, Free Analysis) confirmed earlier this week that it has been designated a “Resource” by both BP and the U.S. Coast Guard \l "" to assist when needed for the clean-up efforts in the Gulf of Mexico. The news comes after the firm responded to three separate bid requests for large orders of booms with its MOP Maximum Oil Pickup product.

this is the letter posted on Mop web By a BP employee.
During four separate occasions we have had the opportunity to observe the MOP® absorbent product's performance. Three were hard surface spills of various hydrocarbon products (i.e. 30w oil, transmission fluid, heavy naphtha, diesel oil, and blended heavy sop oils). On each occasion the absorbents picked up all of the products leaving no apparent residue. We mixed water at some sights and the hydrophobic properties allowed the absorbent to hold the products while allowing the water to run free and clean of oil.
The other test was with booms and pillows in shore line fresh water. The booms and pillows performed above the standards established by other booms (1.e. polypropylene). The booms had excellent penetration and adequately contained the product spill.
The material is light weight and more economical than the competitive brands we have used. We are extremely pleased with its performance and cost, and would recommend serious consideration of the product before using an alternative.

Update from MOP
Re: Gulf of Mexico Spill
4/29/2010
Many of you have written to ask if MOP Maximum Oil Pickup oil absorbent could be helpful in the spill in the Gulf of Mexico right now.
The answer is an unequivocal YES. MOP could be used in many ways but the highest and best use right now is in the littoral zone close to the shore where MOP can be used to lock up the oil so that it doesn’t damage the fragile ecosystem and fisheries of the region.
We have offered the following thanks to a generous offer from a MOP friend and shareholder:
We have offered to ship a container of MOP absorbent with the equipment necessary to deploy it. The full container could be deployed using our MOP Cannon in about 4 hours and lock up between 40 – 80 thousand gallons of oil. Additionally, We could have a second container ready to ship within a few days.
We have left messages at the command center for LT Dauner of the US Coast Guard – one of the people who is leading efforts to coordinate help.
Additionally, Wayne King has spoken with Catherine Williams the point person for BP on the phone and followed up with a message by email (as requested).
We stand ready to ship the sorbent the moment we get an ok and Wayne King is prepared to travel to the area if we can be of assistance in the deployment.
We are trying very hard to reach out to help and we believe that the folks working to contain the spill are acting heroically but we are frustrated that we have been unable to get the MOP into the hands of folks where it would do some good.
If you have suggestions for how we might be able to reach a decision maker, feel free to email Wayne King at MOPEnvironmental@gmail.com.

Here is your change to shine mop.. how about giving BP A CALL
Release date: 22 April 2010
BP today activated an extensive oil spill response in the US Gulf of Mexico following the fire and subsequent sinking of the Transocean Deepwater Horizon drilling rig 130 miles south-east of New Orleans.
BP is assisting Transocean in an assessment of the well and subsea blow out preventer with remotely operated vehicles.
BP has also initiated a plan for the drilling of a relief well, if required. A nearby drilling rig will be used to drill the well. The rig is available to begin activity immediately.
BP has mobilized a flotilla of vessels and resources that includes:
significant mechanical recovery capacity;
32 spill response vessels including a large storage barge;
skimming capacity of more than 171,000 barrels per day, with more available if needed;
offshore storage capacity of 122,000 barrels and additional 175,000 barrels available and on standby;
supplies of more than 100,000 gallons of dispersants and four aircraft ready to spray dispersant to the spill, and the pre-approval of the US Coast Guard to use them;
500,000 feet of boom increasing to 1,000,000 feet of boom by day’s end;
pre-planned forecasting of 48-hour spill trajectory which indicates spilled oil will remain well offshore during that period;
pre-planned staging of resources for protection of environmentally sensitive areas.
"We are determined to do everything in our power to contain this oil spill and resolve the situation as rapidly, safely and effectively as possible," said Group Chief Executive Tony Hayward. "We have assembled and are now deploying world-class facilities, resources and expertise, and can call on more if needed. There should be no doubt of our resolve to limit the escape of oil and protect the marine and coastal environments from its effects."
As part of its planning and approval requirement prior to offshore activity, the area was evaluated for use of dispersants and the plans approved by the US Coast Guard which has now given the go-ahead for their use.

Bath, NH, April 12, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The Spill Prevention Kit utilizes MOP® Maximum Oil Pickup, the company’s patented “green” sorbent as the key component in a range of products including socks, pillows and the bilge skimmer. Made using renewable hydroelectric energy, entirely of recycled and organic materials MOP® Maximum Oil Pickup is the only “cradle to cradle” green product on the market. “Unlike many other green products, however,” said President Charles Diamond, “MOP® also has a competitive advantage on both price and performance in the market.” MOP's sorbent aggressively absorbs gas and oil while repelling water completely. With a pickup ratio at, or approaching, 30-1, MOP® is the most effective oil sorbent available anywhere.
Wayne King, VP of Business Development and Innovation, said “we personally believe that other non-biodegradable spill sorbents such as clay and polypropylene should be banned from the market because they represent an irresponsible and unnecessary risk to the environment, particularly when it comes to disposal. Where MOP can be land farmed, composted, or even disposed as a solid waste, both clay and polypropylene almost always have to be treated as hazardous waste, adding huge costs to the products in the disposal process.”
Refills Also Available
In addition to the environmentally friendly Spill Prevention Kits, MOP Environmental Solutions, Inc. has also released a new set of refills for all their Spill Prevention and Cleanup Kits. “We are exceedingly proud of the fact that we now offer refills for all of our spill prevention and cleanup kits, allowing us to refill only the consumable items at a substantially reduced cost to both the consumer and the environment ." said Diamond

The Progressive Automotive X-Prize, closing in on its May 2010 competition start date, held a technical summit of the participating 43 teams at the 2009 SEMA show in Las Vegas. Twelve of those teams brought along vehicles to display at the show, each one in varying degrees of completeness. This technical summit comes on the eve of the announcement that it will receive up to $5.5 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy. The award outlines specific tasks for the Auto X Prize to follow including vehicle telemetry integration, technical assistance to qualifying teams and the addition of technical staffing. The locations for the acceleration, hill climbing, slalom and fuel economy competitions haven’t been announced yet, but we’ve heard that Indianapolis and Washington, D.C., will be two of them. We also hear Auto X Prize fans will be able to watch real-time videos of the $10-million prize competition online and even see instantaneous fuel economy and performance of the entries.
Of the cars on display, the Zap Alias received most of the attention. Zap is said to begin building the Alias soon, and they even came prepared with handout questionnaires on the show floor asking consumers if they would prefer to own a $46,000 Alias that hits 80 mph and has a range of 100 miles or if they would be more likely to buy a $36,000 Alias with the same range and a top speed of 70 mph. Either way, the three-wheeler is said to hit 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. The car on display looked well-finished with a complete interior
MOPN Inks agreement for distribution in Ecuador and Peru
Source: MOP Environmental Solutions, Inc.

Declaring that “The challenges of oil spill remediation needs in Ecuador and Peru are an ideal place for us to prove the effectiveness of the new MOP®-RESCUE™ technology .” MOP Environmental Solutions, Inc. (MOPN-pk) President Charles Diamond, today announced an agreement to expand its distribution of the company’s popular green oil spill cleanup product MOP® Maximum Oil Pickup sorbent (MOP®). The agreement with Ecuador-based APDProyectos Cia. Ltda. is expected to generate substantial sales of MOP® sorbent and products as well as consulting and service opportunities for both companies in the oil rich countries.
In January, Executives from APDProyectos Cia Ltda visited Bath, NH, where the MOPN plant is based. They were shown our newest oil-contaminated-soil cleanup equipment in action. whereby the equipment RAPIDLY; REMOVED the oil, CLEANED the soil, and RECOVERED the oil, from the oil saturated soil (successfully demonstrating the application from sand to heavily organic potting soil).
The MOP®-RESCUE™ (Rapid Environmental Spill Clean Up Equipment) demonstrated that it rapidly remediates oil contaminated soil, to an apparently oil free state in under 10 minutes. This new process holds great promise as the most rapid, low cost method to remediate oil contaminated soil, completely restoring its value once again for agricultural or commercial use. Our MOP® sorbent product works together with our new MOP®-RESCUE (Provisional Patent Filed), technology.
“What excites us most,” said Diamond, “is the opportunity to work with APDProyectos Cia Ltda to tackle the huge environmental challenges - including the opportunity to capture and recycle oil that has been contaminating the ground in so many places.”
In addition to signing an exclusive agreement for distribution, the parties discussed at length the opportunities in Ecuador and Peru, particularly the status of potential cleanup of a massive number of spills and oil pits throughout the country’s Amazon Region.
MOP Environmental Solutions, Inc. (MOPN) is a publicly traded company. MOP® Maximum Oil Pickup™ is a 'cradle-to-cradle' green product that is the most effective oil spill recovery system on the market.
MOP® is an aggressive oleophyllic and hydrophobic (oil attracting and water repelling) sorbent made from recycled and fully biodegradable materials, manufactured using small-scale hydroelectric green energy. MOP®’s properties are such that it can effectively deal with an oil spill the size of the Exxon Valdez in a 24 hour period, but is just as effective at cleaning up the spill off a garage floor.

ZAP Receives Order for 100 New Electric SUVs from Samyang Optics
SEOUL, South Korea, SANTA ROSA, Calif., and HANGZHOU, China, Feb 24, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Electric vehicle pioneer ZAP /quotes/comstock/11k!zaap (ZAAP 0.34, -0.03, -8.11%) has accepted a purchase order from Samyang Optics Co. Ltd. (KSE: 008080.KS) of Korea for 100 electric SUVs to be built through a partnership with China auto manufacturer Zhejiang Jonway Automobile Co. Ltd.
ZAP's design of the electric version of Jonway's A380 5-door SUV, targeting the fleet market, would conform to Korean motor vehicle regulations and be capable of 70 MPH with a range of 100 miles per charge. The target market in Korea is intra-campus transportation for large government, military, corporate and university campuses. ZAP has 15 years experience in electric vehicle systems integration and sees a growing market for conversions of gas fleet vehicles. A video of ZAP's road testing in Santa Rosa, California is available at http://zapglobal.wordpress.com.
"The electric Vehicle market is a key new strategic focus of Samyang, and we are committed to our partnership with ZAP in developing the market for Korea," said Samyang co-CEO Christopher Kang, MD. "This initial purchase order is phase one of our business plan in introducing ZAP's electric vehicles to Korea."
Samyang, widely known for its camera lenses, is expanding into cleantech business opportunities in Korea, focusing on the electric vehicle market, an area supported by the Korean government. Korea has announced an investment of 400bn won (US$342.6m) by 2014 for electric vehicle market development. ZAP and Samyang officials have held meetings with representatives of the Korean government to start the process of gaining government approval to import and eventually manufacture the electric SUVs domestically. Samyang's website is http://www.syopt.co.kr.
The initial order is expected to be assembled in China at ZAP Hangzhou, a joint venture recently formed with Holley Group, a global supplier of electric power meters based in Hangzhou, and Better World International Limited, funded by Cathaya Funds.

US Postal Service Awards ZAP Engineering Contract for Electric Mail Truck
SANTA ROSA, Calif., Feb 17, 2010 -- ZAP (OTC Bulletin Board: ZAAP) announces the United States Postal Service (USPS) has awarded the electric car pioneer, an engineering contract for the design and development of an electric version of its Long Life Vehicle (LLV).
ZAP will convert the gasoline mail truck to run on electricity as specified by the USPS at facilities in Santa Rosa, California. Following completion the converted vehicle will undergo field trials in the Washington, DC metropolitan area later this year. ZAP was selected along with four other firms in a competitive bid process held nationwide by the USPS.
Yesterday, US Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, D-California, toured ZAP's facility, commenting on job creation by ZAP and the Postal Service: "I so appreciate ZAP for hanging in there all these years, knowing what we should be doing as a country. I think a majority of members of Congress, the House in particular, know that they were right and that this is where we need to be investing." A video and slideshow of the tour are available at http://zapglobal.wordpress.com.
The USPS operates a fleet of approximately 142,000 LLVs as part of the largest civilian fleet in the world, according to USPS sources, with 218,684 vehicles traveling more than 1.25 billion miles each year. The USPS fleet consumed 444 million gallons of fuel in 2009, costing roughly $1.1 billion. Agency vehicles average 10.4 miles per gallon since most drive slowly and make frequent stops with the engine idling between mailboxes.
Rep. Jose E. Serrano (D-New York) has introduced legislation calling for at least 20,000 electric vehicles to be put into service with the USPS to reduce fuel consumption. Rep. Serrano also called for the allocation of $1.86 billion to the Energy Department and Postal Service to convert current mail trucks or manufacture new ones. H.R. 4399 entitled the American Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Act has been referred to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
ZAP believes the use of electric mail trucks in the postal fleet could be a multi-billion dollar market opportunity for manufacturers of electric vehicles and have a positive impact on the environment by increasing efficiency while reducing air pollution and gasoline consumption.

MOP Environmental Files New Patent - Cleans Oil Saturated Land in Minutes
Source: MOP Environmental Solutions, Inc.
Feb. 5, 2010
MOP Environmental Solutions, Inc. (MOPN-pk) CEO, Charles Diamond announces filing of a Provisional Patent on a New Technology for Ultra-Fast, Low-Cost, On-Site, Remediation of even the most recalcitrant of Oil Spills on Land.
“Called “MOP® RESCUE™ (Maximum Oil Pickup – Rapid Environmental Spill, Clean Up & Elimination)”… we now accomplish in minutes what otherwise took years. I believe this will completely shift the existing paradigm for clean up of land-based oil spills to our new, on-site, ultra-fast, low-cost process,” said CEO, Diamond.
“Until now, fast, on-site remediation of large land-based spills were exceedingly costly and impractical, leaving the choice to heavy fines for abandonment or costly removal of the contaminated soil for transport to a hazardous waste site to be replaced with clean soil.”
Diamond further states: “We believe our MOP® RESCUE™ process is the answer for fast, low cost recovery of vast areas of already abandoned oil contaminated lands.”
Profitable Oil Recovery:
“The MOP® RESCUE™ process will offset the usual cost of remediation where a large quantity of oil is still present, since up to 95% of the oil is recoverable in a marketable form,” Diamond points out.
Land Recovery:
“The MOP® RESCUE™ process will restore oil contaminated soil permitting the land to be restored to productive, sustainable use.
“We obviously have more work to do beyond our pilot models. Our current pilots were made to demonstrate and prove the MOP® RESCUE™ process. I believe we are now ready to pilot the first commercial size models with modifications to currently available, large, full scale equipment.” said Diamond.
“Our testing demonstrates successful removal of oil from virtually any soil in 5 to 10 minutes, ready for return to the environment with the oil captured and removed. The MOP® RESCUE™ process works equally well regardless of oil saturation and any amount of water present from dry land to land totally covered in oil and/or water.”
MOP Environmental Solutions’ mission is to produce the most cost-effective, performance-efficient oil spill recovery line of product that Out-Greens the competition. Consistent with our mission, the MOP® RESCUE™ process meets all the sustainability goals that we set before we began this project. We believe we have proven that oil spill removal can be a responsible, green, and totally sustainable process.”
Diamond expects to finalize the patent within the year and will offer MOP® RESCUE™ technology rights to a select group of Environmental Remediation Companies to give them a competitive edge in the marketplace.
“We will offer to partner with a heavy equipment company to develop an advanced machine that will operate the MOP® RESCUE™ process, powered by a small percentage of the harvested clean alternative fuel that is simultaneously a “Clean Fuel Harvester,” Diamond said.

Charles is tied up with getting a news release finished regarding a new provisional patent that we have just filed and preparing to file a second within a few days. So the task is left to me to respond to your email, though I don't know all the details of your conversation with Charlie.
We expect to have a letter out to shareholders within the next few weeks outlining all of the developments at MOP of late. While the relationship with the auto manufacturer, of which you speak, is still in development we have every reason to believe that we will soon be able to make an announcement of some sort regarding them. Unfortunately, large companies are just as bureaucratic as large governments and the trail from the shop floor to the boardroom is sometimes a longer one than anyone anticipates.
Our revenues for January alone have outpaced our revenues for all of 2009 so we are optimistic that we are on the right track and we expect to be back to you with something in writing very soon.

Apparently people do not believe that zap is capable of making a profit.
Does Zap! have an electric SUV up its sleeve?
by Domenick Yoney (RSS feed) on Jan 23rd 2010 at 9:25AM
Might more be going on at Zap then we had previously heard? Considering the number of previous product promulgations that subsequently never materialized we aren't holding our breath, but who knows, maybe this time there is a wolf. What's the news/rumor this time? That the controversial California company is teaming up with Zhejiang Jonway Automobile Co. Ltd to produce electric SUVs, cars and other vehicles for the Chinese, European and North American markets. Jonway currently produces a three- and five-door version of the A380, a UFO-branded SUV that looks nothing like a Toyota Rav4 in their 50,000 unit capacity facility in Taizhou, China.
Having only had a sales goal of 15,000 vehicles last year, we can see why the company is hot to jump into bed with "one of the world's oldest electric vehicle providers" who promises to help them take advantage of the Chinese government's 60,000 RMB (approximately $8,790 at today's rate) per electric vehicle stimulus subsidy, despite the fact that the only experience their American partner has had with the "AC propulsion and lithium battery system" they plan on stuffing into the UFO SUV consists of a one-off prototype of the Zap Alias. This should go well, don't you think?
Hit the jump for a fresh press release with all the lurid details and video of the UFO in action, complete with bizarre mysterious opening sequence. As a bonus, we also have footage of a repainted (and possibly re-configured to front-wheel-drive) road-going Zap Alias which was most recently in Detroit for the 2010 NAIAS.
