Winning Best Antidote for Busch...
By: Pete Pistone on June 30, 2011 | 8:37 P.M. EST
"Like I’ve said, performance on the track is always the best antidote for putting all that aside." Kurt Busch is coming off his first win of the season and believes his performance on the track has been the best way to put behind some personal issues he's been facing.
Busch addressed the media Thursday at Daytona International Speedway in preparation for the Coke Zero 400 and confirmed that he and his wife Eva had separated and were going through a divorce. He admitted the challenges of trying to balance his personal problems with being competitive and successful on the race track.
“There are things going on at the personal level," Busch said. "There are things personal with the team that’s been well documented. Like I’ve said, performance on the track is always the best antidote for putting all that aside. I think the way that we’ve handled the situation of this sport; we’re really good at respecting one another. I’m happy that I’m an athlete in a sport that really cares about writing about our sport versus writing about our personal lives. The other sports get into the professional's lives in a very personal way and I’m glad that I’m in the NASCAR world to work with you guys and to respect that as well. It’s tough. We’re an entity, but I’m still a person.”
His road course win at Infineon Raceway last Sunday has Busch riding sky high as he heads into Saturday night's race.
Busch scored his first win of the season at Infineon Raceway, an effort that capped an incredible surge for the entire Penske Racing organization. His teammate Brad Keselowski kicked off June with a win at Kansas Speedway and Busch ended the month with a trip to Victory Lane in Sonoma.
The performance has Busch feeling very well about his chances for a second straight checkered flag on Saturday night.
“The confidence level is high for everyone inside this Penske Racing team because of the hard work and success we’ve enjoyed in recent weeks,” said Busch. “We want to keep it going this week and what better place than Daytona.”
When the Sprint Cup Series last visited Daytona for Speedweeks in February, Busch and his Shell/Pennzoil Dodge were one of the most competitive teams on track. Busch won the Budweiser Shootout as well as his Gatorade Duel qualifying race only to come up just short of the Speedweeks sweep with a fifth-place finish in the Daytona 500.
While he was pleased with the overall effort, Busch remembers ultimately feeling disappointed when he left Daytona.
“We had won the Budweiser Shootout and won our Thursday qualifying race so we had so much confidence and momentum rolling into the Daytona 500,” said Busch, who will start his 43rd Sprint Cup plate race at Daytona on Saturday still looking for that elusive Cup points race victory. “The 500 is our Super Bowl and all the hype was crazy around our Shell-Pennzoil Dodge Team. No team had ever claimed all three Cup race winner’s trophies in a single Speedweeks.”
Busch believes that can change on Saturday in the annual Fourth of July weekend trip to Daytona. However, he is quick to point out there’s an even picture to keep in mind.
“We certainly want to finally win us one of these things, that’s for sure,” Busch said. “But, we still have to keep focus on this season and what it’s going to take to move forward in the effort to make the Chase this year. We need to win races because that will be so important come September. At the same time, we have to stay consistent in posting the top-five finishes and top-10s.”
Trying to balance between both goals is a challenge that Busch knows can be difficult.
“The bottom line is that we have to go after those race wins as hard as we can, but still exercise conservatism, if you want to call it that,” he said. “Unlike the guys back there in 15th to 20th in the points who can gamble on fuel mileage and roll the dice out there in every race, we have to look at it as the big goal of completing all the laps and getting the best possible finish we can in every race.”
Crew chief Steve Addington echoes his driver’s view of what’s on the line in the coming weeks as the “Race to the Chase” begins Saturday with only ten races left to decide this year’s playoff field.
However, Addington is confident in Busch’s ability and likes the team’s chances to get to victory lane at Daytona.
“As great of driver as Kurt is on the plate tracks, it’s difficult to understand how he still hasn’t won a points race there,” said Addington. “He’s definitely one of the top-five plate racers and is really in his element out there. He knows what he’s doing and it’s incredible what he can do with his race car, especially when it comes down to the final few laps.”

Newman Looks to Reel in Daytona Win...
By: Pete Pistone on June 29, 2011 | 1:56 P.M. EST
Newman will be sponsored by Bass Pro Shops at Daytona. (Photo: CIA Stock Photography)
PrintEmail ShareRyan Newman has experienced past success at Daytona International Speedway and hopes for more in Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400.
Newman, who will be sponsored by Bass Pro Shops this weekend, has visited Victory Lane at the historic track in the ARCA, IROC and Sprint Cup Series with his biggest triumph coming in the Daytona 500 back in 2008.
However, overall his record isn’t as stellar in NASCAR’s top division as the Indiana native would like. In 19 career Sprint Cup Series starts at Daytona Newman has that one victory in the 500, with two top five and three top-10 finishes.
Since joining Stewart-Haas Racing, Newman has made five starts at “The World Center of Racing” and has never finished better than 20th.
He was one of the fastest cars in last February’s Daytona 500 until getting swept up in a multi-car accident and knocked from contention.
However, Newman believes the positives of his previous Daytona outings will be beneficial to putting together a solid effort in Saturday’s night’s race.
“We led the most laps in the Daytona 500, which was a great feat for us as a team,” Newman said. “It was the first time for me at a restrictor-plate track and the first time for me at SHR. And we feel we were four laps away from winning that race which, if you equate it to math, time-wise it’s two-and-a-half minutes.
“To be two-and-a-half minutes away from something so big and get crashed is pretty disappointing. It happens, and it seems like it’s happened to us a lot, but we still left Daytona knowing we had something and we were in the mix to bring home the trophy, and that was a big deal for us.”
The two-car drafting style of racing that has now become the norm at the newly paved Daytona was a big deal during Speedweeks. Newman is one of the drivers who enjoys the new way of getting around the 2.5-mile track.
“I enjoy it more, now, with the tandem draft, just from my standpoint as a driver because we have more influence on the performance of our team and how we can hook together with a teammate or a non-teammate to have an effect on our day,” Newman said. “And that means the most from my standpoint – to have that influence. In saying that, coming back here after leading the most laps in the Daytona 500, I think we have a really good package and I’m looking forward to it.”
Newman enters this weekend’s race 10th in the Sprint Cup Series point standings trailing leader Carl Edwards by 98 points. With 11 races to go until the field is set for this year’s Chase, Newman understands how important every race is from here on in starting with Saturday’s race.
“Daytona is a great place to race,” he said. “I’ve always said that I don’t enjoy the restrictor-plate races as much as I do the non-restrictor-plate races, but I understand it’s a part of our sport. It’s not restrictor-plate racing the way that it used to be, where everybody is four-wide, four-deep and you are stuck in New York City traffic. That’s what I didn’t like from my standpoint.”

Thursday, June 30th - 6:00 am
One more cool and cloudy day... then summer weather makes a return for holiday weekend! Today's forecast calls for overcast skies and occasional sprinkles. Daytime highs near 67. (still well below our normal high for June of 76 degrees.) Tonight, clouds will begin to clear overnight. Overnight lows will stay in the mid 50s.
Tomorrow.. patchy morning clouds then mostly sunny weather. However, the onshore flow will keep temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. Saturday will be sunny with temperatures topping off around 80. Most of the weekend will stay warm, dry and generally 80 or above. The exception is Sunday...when clouds will keep the high temperatures in the low 70s.
Our recent cool weather tied a June record for the fewest amount of 80-degree days in June. We've only had two 80-degree days this month. However, the climate is about to change next week....with the extended forecast calling for three or more 80-degree days in a row!

Today's Forecast
Wednesday, June 29th - 6:55 am
Expect mostly cloudy and cool weather today again around the Pacific Northwest. A few weak disturbances and a strong onshore flow will keep the clouds and drizzle coming over the next couple of days. Daytime highs will stay in the upper 60s. (Average high for PDX is 75) Overnight lows will drop to the mid 50s.
Tomorrow's forecast looks similar..with a big change ahead for the weekend. As a ridge of high pressure builds in the upper levels of the atmosphere..we will reap the benefits. Skies will turn sunny with daytime highs in the upper 70s and low 80s over the weekend. Monday , the 4th of July, looks fantastic- highs near 83 degrees.
