>>what's the consensus on a non-ranked, non-scored list delivered in no particular (or random) order, and with "cheats" excluded?
I've actually spent a little time cogitating upon this before responding.
My answer to the above would be "what for?"
Like it or not we are a competitive society, this nature is not limited to strictly American interests either (re: Salt Lake City, current events). We all want to be one up on the next guy or gal. Most folks will try to win honestly and with some integrity. Some will cheat, regardless. It is interesting that the same solution keeps arising for this and many other contoversial issues in a variety of systems. That solution is...
1. Keep the rules simple.
2. Let everyone know what the consequences of breaking the rules are. Make the punishment fit the crime.
3. Enforce those consequences without fail.
Whether you are trying to manage a top Members list or attempting to keep CEO's from robbing their employee's and the general public blind, Apply the above. It will work.
The Bird of Prey
I agree with pulling the list until an alternative can be set up.
It would seem to me, that if it is a simple database query to create a list of maniplulative attempts...it would be equally simple to make such a TOS violation subject to suspension and for a repeat offender termination. Clearly such behavior is not what is wanted here at IH.
IMHO, though, whatever system you put in place will be subject to abuse in some fashion. The only means of reducing the abuse to a tolerable level is through strict enforcement of harsh penalties.
What ever you decide to set up as the next scoring system...
1. Don't tell anyone the formula it's based on, not even your mother!
2. Base it on something like number of posts a user has written that have been viewed by members already on the TML. Have a minimum number to even be considered and make it high enough that Monkeyboy would have to spend 24/7 reading the same post just to get on the bottom of the list! then add in the scoring as you see fit.
Another option since this is such a subjective issue anyway...
Allow the top 10 or 25 or 50 from the last list to become a committee that would submit a list of their recommendations for a top 25. The users getting the most votes could be listed in a new TML. Every month this group could be polled in a similar fashion and a new TML generated. anyone spamming this group in a effort to get on the list would be subject to suspension. Of course if you end up with a solid group anyone spamming the group won't make or remain on the list for long.
One final option, Matt and Bob can take the existing list remove those that have been trying to manipulate, remove anyone they don't want on the list and post that as a TML, adding or deleting as they see fit.

Can't say you've been missed.

What is really sad is the only reason for it is to cut costs and save/make more money.
BTW, are you the same RussHoward that was once active on RB's AVBC board? If you are, I know that is a touchy subject. No need to get into a discussion about it, I 'm just trying to make conversation. If you are him, I have always respected your POV and the way you chose to present it.

Hmmmm,
What will they do when...
30 seconds after shutting the back door the patient goes critical.
The ER is 15 minutes away.
Because it's just chest pains they sent a BLS unit.
Upon arrival patient is DOA.
The investigation shows that had an ALS unit been sent the patient would have lived.
I can't imagine EMT's supporting this. Sounds more like a bean counter decision, IMHO.
The Bird of Prey
BTW,
I am pretty sure that all of the Ladies posting here at IH are ladies "all the time". Which reminds me of one of my favorite quotes....
There comes a time when a lady must shed her dignity with her clothes, and do her whorish best. - Lazuras Long
The Bird of Prey
The alias is a feminine reference, also she has signed off as "Ms. Shirley" another feminine reference. Rather than even attempt to be PC, I choose to allow another user the luxury of presenting themselves as they wish. You never know "Laverne" might be a woman "trapped in a man's body" and this is the only way that feeling can be expressed. Either way I consider it a sign of respect to treat someone presenting themselves as a lady...as a lady.
Smiles! Smiles! Everyone!
The Bird of Prey
Matt, I concur with Amuck. Open Laverne up to freely exchange today as much as she sees fit.
The Bird of Prey
I would like to see proof (if you have any) of your allegation.
I personnally have witness no incidents such as you describe here. There are a number of people posting here regularly that are critical of and even rude to management, yet their privileges have not been terminated. More than a few persons of the female persuasion fall into that group. From time to time I have been a member of that group yet my privileges have never been revoked. BTW, I am certain that present management may have wanted to revoke my privileges from time to time as I have gotten a bit outside the lines if you know what I mean.
You're here for a reason. You have several choices.
You can continue as you are and live with the restrictions imposed on free membership. You can spend your posts making not so thinly veiled accusations or you can spend it discussing stocks. You can upgrade to premium membership for a month, during that month you can test your theory to whatever extent you feel necessary. If you break the rules, there are consequenses. No message site is going to give anyone a carte blanche to do as they please, to attack other users at will, to post their personal information and generally disturb other users free rights to use the service.
Your argument has been presented dozens of times in various forms here before, though some that argue you point no longer post here, many still do, And to my knowledge were never even suspended for a short time much less terminated as you suggest.
So, if you have proof I'd like to see it.
IMHO, Matt Brown is one of the better site Admins I have ever known, although he is raw and still learning the job. Unlike many poor admins he admits mistakes and learns from them. He make changes only when necessary, and punishes only when forced to. My only strong complaint is that he is sometimes too lenient on abusive users. And he has heard that publicly and privately from me before.
Bob Z. our other half of the management team is an excellent code monkey. 8>)
His contributions in the last couple of months have been stellar. Bob is also aware of my not so favorable opinion of his skills as an Admin. He is to be commended for distancing himself from admin duties (at least publicly), letting Matt handle that chore.
I do recognize that there are persons out there that have this negative view of IH. I offer you the following challenge:
Put up or shut up. Post what you want to say about whatever stock you wish to comment on. See if it gets you booted. You can do this without spending a dime. Free accounts are allowed to post on Stock related boards, so have at it. I wouldn't be surprised if Bob or Matt raised your daily post limit if your posts were of a stock related nature and you asked them very nicely. I think you will find that well presented, thoughtful arguments will be well received here at IH. And that poorly presented personal vendetta's are equally "shown the door".
So step up to the plate and show us what you're made of. Are you really a sincere investor? or another whiner that can only "win" arguments by getting emotional and making things "personal".
Whatever you're pitching IH has the sticks to handle it.
Just Bring It.

I think we just experienced another one of those transdimensional warp-jump attacks by the fanatical Schmeeldrovian Hyperspace Nanodroids (...cleverly disguised as Dahleks...), and led by that cruel and consumately evil, cosmic malevolence Captain F-l-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-s-h Swizzlestick...!!!
Apparently, Captain Flash, was seen franticly waving his new Schmeeldrovian light-saber (..aka: used flea-market cattle prod..) while stirring their daily ration of surplus Klingon microwavable Gaak during recess. A thoroughly shocking experience - when one fails to pay appropriate attention, ....I'm told...!!

TradeWars! That's the one! I never had to worry about playing time, most sysops were glad to exchange time for files and feedback and I always had plenty of those. Those were the days.

Unless you are posting under any of the various monikers penned by Mr. Hollen in the referenced post I don't see how you can definitively say the attack is against you personally.
One could even make a case that the post in question is as relevant to a personal attack on me as it is to you.
I must admit though I found his mispelling of ghaqh to be quite offensive.
Alas, if misspelling and mixed references were TOS violations, I am afraid we'd all be in jail.

I agree with leaving it up to the individual. Some may want to subscribe for the reasons given in your post. If that is what they want to do then so be it.
Personally, I consider my help in the early stages of growing a site sufficient payment in most cases, though I'm not above parting with a donation in times of need. If you were to resurrect the game TradeWorld here at IH, I'd have to reconsider if my original donation was large enough! Now that was a fun BBS game. I forget the name of it but there was a hacker game for BBS's that I enjoyed way back in the day.
Keep up the good work!

Joe,
Could you please clarify your position on Spam?
I am somewhat puzzled by your apparent contradictory statements on the issue.
For Example:

In the first you claim to be a purveyor of canned meat products and seem to pat yourself on the back for circumventing efforts to stop you from spewing said canned meat products.
In the second (and in several other messages) you appear to be vehemently opposed to the distribution of canned meat products as practiced by other competing purveyors of canned meat products.
Please state for the record your real stand on this issue. Unless of course your stand is that it is OK for you but not anyone else.

It used to be part of Flip Wilson's stand up routine. It is one of my favorites.
Returning home after an extended business trip the master of the house noticed the gardener watering some flowers along the driveway. When he reached the gardener the master of the house, being the kind of man that values his employees stopped and asked the gardener how things were going and had anything happened while the master was away.
The gardener replied, "Thank you for asking, I'm doing well, but nothing's been happening around here."
The Master said, "Nothing's been happening!?! I've been gone 3 months! Surely something happened in all that time!?"
The Gardener replied, "Well, now that I think about it...The dog died."
Master: "The dog died? He was still young! How did the dog die?"
Gardener: "Must have been the horsemeat he ate."
M: "Horsemeat! How did the dog get horsemeat?"
G: "Probably from the dead horse in the barn. The dog found the dead horse in the barn ate the meat and died."
M: "Dead horse in the barn!? How did a dead horse get in the barn?"
G: "From the fire. The fire burnt up the barn and the horse and the dog ate the meat and died."
M: "How did the barn catch fire?!!!"
G: "Most likely the sparks from the house flew over to the barn from the roof, and they burnt up the barn and the horse and the dog ate the meat and died."
M: "The Roof was on fire!? How did the roof catch fire?!!"
G: "Well, the curtains were burning and the fire shot up the wall to the roof, then the roof started burning and the spark flew over to the barn and burnt up the barn and the horse and the dog ate the meat and died."
M: "How did the curtains catch fire?!?!"
G: "Most likely it was the candles around your mother in law's coffin. See, the flame caught on to the curtains and the curtains started burning, the fire shot up the wall to the roof, the roof started burning and the sparks flew over to the barn and they burnt up the barn and the horse and the dog ate the meat and died."
M: "My Mother in law's coffin??!!! She's dead?!?! How?"
G: "Look, I'm only goning to say this one time so you'd better get it straight. Your wife ran off with the poolboy, when your mother in law found out she had a heart attack and died, so we put her coffin in the den and the candles caught the curtains on fire and the curtains started burning, the fire shot up the wall to the roof, the roof started burning and the sparks flew over to the barn and they burnt up the barn and the horse and the dog ate the meat and died. But other than that Ain't nothin' happenin'!"

Always Thought Green Snakes Were Okay?
Green Garden Grass snakes can be dangerous, Yes, grass snakes, not rattlesnakes. A couple in Sweetwater, Texas had a lot of potted plants, and during a recent cold spell, the wife was bringing a lot of them indoors to protect them from a possible freeze. It turned out a little green garden snake was hidden in one of the plants and when it had warmed up, it slithered out and the wife saw it go under the sofa. She let out a very loud scream.
The husband who was taking a shower ran out into the living room naked to see what the problem was. She told him there was a snake under the sofa. He got down on the floor on his hands and knees to look for it.
About that time the family dog came and cold nosed him in the butt. He thought the snake had bitten him and he fainted. His wife thought he had a heart attack, so she called an ambulance. The attendants rushed in and loaded him on the stretcher and started carring him out. About that time the snake came out from under the sofa and the Emergency Medical Technician saw it and dropped his end of the stretcher.
That's when the man broke his leg and why he was in the hostital. The wife still had the problem of the snake in the house, so she called a neighbor man. He volunteered to capture the snake. He armed himself with a rolled- up newspaper and began poking under the couch. Soon he decided it was gone and told the woman, who sat down on the sofa in relief.
But in relaxing, her hand dangled in between the cushions, where she felt the snake wiggling around. She screamed and fainted, the snake rushed back under the sofa, and the neighbor man , seeing her laying there passed out tried to use CPR to revive her. The neighbor's wife who had just returned from shopping at the grocery store, saw her husdand's mouth on the woman's mouth and slammed her husband in the back of the head with a bag of canned goods, knocking him out and cutting his scalp to a point where it needed stitches.
An ambulance was again called and was determined that the injury required hospitalization. The noise woke the woman from her dead faint and she saw her neighbor lying on the floor with his wife bending over him, so she assumed he had been bitten by the snake. She went to the kitchen and brought back a small bottle of whiskey, and began pouring it down the man's throat. By now the police had arrived. They saw the unconscious man, smelled the whiskey and assumed that a drunken fight had occurred.
They were about to arrest them all when the two womem tried to explain how it all happened over a little green snake. They called an ambulance, which took away the neighbor and his sobbing wife. Just then the little snake crawled out from under the couch. One of the policeman drew his gun and fired at it.
He missed the snake and hit the leg of the end table that was on the side of the sofa. The table fell over and the lamp on it shattered and as the bulb broke. it started a fire in the drapes. The other policeman tried to beat out the flames and fell through the window into the yard on top of the family dog, who was startled, jumped up and raced out into the street, where an oncoming car swerved to avoid it and smashed into the parked police car and set it on fire.
Meanwhile the burning drapes had spread to the walls and the entire house was blasing. Neighbors had called the fire department and on the arriving fire-truck had srarted raising his ladder as they were halfway down the street. The rising ladder tore out the overhead wires and put out the electricity and disconnected the telephones in a ten-square city block area.
Time passed, both men were discharged from the hospital, the house was rebuilt, the police aquired a new car, and all was right with their world.
About a year later they were watching TV and the weatherman announced a cold snap for that night. The husband asked his wife if she thought they should bring in their plants for the night. "SHE SHOT HIM"

Please forgive my presumption
I presumed your information was for persons unfamiliar with the trappings of Due Diligence. Not one such as myself. I was aware of the Pre Proxy statement indicating a shareholder meeting at which the issue of increasing the OS count would be voted on by the shareholders.
The point of my previous post is that not everyone reading your musings is as well versed in due diligence as you or I may be. Since you were raising the issue it would be appropriate for you to include means for the less experienced investor to confirm the information presented for themselves. By failing, and now refusing to provide a link, the newbie investor (most likely to fall for scams) is forced to rely on the information provided in your post. A good promoter would have a field day picking your post apart and confuse the newbie even further.
Even the simple http://www.freeedgar.com and telling them to search under ticker ASTN would be most helpful to the newbie investor trying to decide if they wish to plunk their money down on ASTN or not. Certainly more helpful than what was posted. Some might simply dismiss it as ranting commentary by a disgruntled investor.
The purpose of adding links is not to make things more difficult for you, the provider of commentary...it is to make things easier for your audience, without whom you might as well scream in the shower.

I'll do what I can. Maybe we can have more fun with this.
Klingon - way too much to cover in one post. Suggest you try the Klingon Language Institute. I believe their latest project is the Bible translated into Klingon. I understand Hamlet went over quite well.
Joe Bob Briggs was (is?) a newspaper columnist that becaime famous for reviwing "B" movies (Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, etc.). He typically commented on the number of dead bodies, number of visible unclothed female breasts, various martial arts fighting styles (all given the generic Fu as the last word, and so forth. Anything excessive was referred to as "gratuitous".
He also was notorious for referring to on screen sex as "making the sign of the triple gilled attack weasel" wherein the beast referenced would often change but be equally as ludicrous as triple gilled attack weasel. For more information than you might care to know...the phase is an adaptation of Shakespeare's "making the sign of the beast with two backs" reference to sexual intercourse.
I always enjoyed his "reviews" and on occasion even enjoyed the movie as well.
Orcs - the invention of J.R.R. Tolkien. The footsoldiers of the Bad Guy's army. They are fully explained in the books and the movie. They are most unplesant creatures and I would perfer you learn about them from the books or the movie. If you wish I can provide a simplified version in another post.
So to translate my previous message...
Zero Breasts = No unclothed female breasts are present in this film.
Gratuitous Orcs = Lots and lots of them running around.
Bow and arrer Fu = people die by being shot with bow and arrow
Sword Fu = people die by the sword
Hope that helped.
Grub - a post that occurs on a significant event(?) on a particular thread of message board. Example post number 1000.
Some users have turned this into a game.
Some of the events are;
Post numbers ending in 99, 00 or 01.
double or triple repeated digits in the post number, 111, 222, 3344 for example.
consecutive numbers in a post 1234 or 5678.
Palindromes 2112, 5335, etc.
For more info on grubs you'd have to ask Bob, JXM, or Chas. They are the resident experts at this game.

Josh,
Your mention of comparing P&D and S&D brought the following article written by Gary Swancey (better known as GABARD):
His basis for the article was personal experience.
PUMP & DUMP vs SHORT & DISTORT
by Gary Swancey
Most traders have heard and read of the Pump & Dump scheme. But very little has been written about the other side of the trade or its opposite, which is the Short & Distort.
Now lets take the Short & Distort scheme and apply it to the rules of Pump & Dump for stock manipulators.
In order to make these market manipulations work, the professionals assume:
(a) The Public is STUPID and
(b) The Public will mainly buy at the HIGH and
(c) The Public will sell at the LOW.
Therefore, as long as the market manipulator can run crowd control, he can be successful in his agenda of stock manipulation by controlling the market's greed and fear.
STAGES FOR THE DEADLY ART OF STOCK MANIPULATION
The Pump & Dump Scheme
Stage 1: The Acquisition of shares.
Please note: all sharp price movements, whether up or down, are the result of one or more, usually a group, professionals manipulating the share price.
(Loading): In stage I of a Pump & Dump scheme Manipulators after acquiring their shares leak information and pump the stock to get buyers silently. This leads to front loading also.
Stage 2: The Promotional Campaign!
Note: this is designed to spread a rumor/story and to play on the emotional greed of a pie in the sky find. It begins to spread across the financial world. Joe public rushes in not to miss the next gold rush.
(PUMP/Greed) Newsletter writers are hired -- either secretly or not -- to cheerlead a stock. PR firms are hired and let loose upon an unsuspecting public. Contracts to appear on radio talk shows are signed and implemented. An advertising campaign is rolled out (television ads, newspaper ads, card deck mailings, e-mails, etc.).
The company signs up to exhibit at "investment conferences" and "shows" (mainly so they can get a little "podium time" to hype their stock and tell you how "their company is really different" and "not a stock promotion.") Funny little "hype" messages are posted on Internet newsgroups. BTW the more, the merrier. 1000% returns are projected.
Stage 3: The infamous DUMP!
(DUMP) The once low volume that caused a bit of a spike suddenly changes to big volume. The stock manipulators sell out their positions into the new buying brought on by the promotion campaign.
Stage 4: The Silence or News Vacuum!
(Silence) No more news or insider leaks of information to pump the stock to get buyers. The front loading sells out. The silence plays on the emotional fear of being hoodwinked. Negative opinions begin to spread across the financial world. Joe public sells out to cut their losses. The really slick market manipulators would even seed the Internet news groups or other journalists to plant negative stories about that company. Or start a propaganda campaign of negative rumors on all available communication vessels.
Stage 5: The Distortion!
(Gone/Waiting/Shorting):
Stage 6: The Accumulation!
(Gone/Waiting/Buying): If the manipulator sees an opportunity the stock is on the floor and not part of the Short & Distort campaign they will begin buying back and slowly accumulating. As the Shorters were shorting the first manipulator was selling, so now it goes the other way. Buying to put pressure on the shorter to cover. Accumulation by new investors and averaging down of old investors are leads to the pressure on the short.
STAGES FOR THE DEADLY ART OF STOCK MANIPULATION
The Short & Distort Scheme
Stage I: Monitoring
In stage I of a Short & Distort scheme Short groups Monitor spikes in volumes on stocks with no rumors.
Stage 2: Flagging
Shorts Flag stocks that run up then sits back and wait patiently for their time.
Stage 3: Preparation
The Shorters research the company and develop their Distortion of the rumors to be used later.
Stage 4: Actual Shorting
The shorts step in selling on every possible up tick. This is the Reverse of front loading. Preparations are made to attack the guy who had earlier written positively about the company and take out, discredit, any new long-term champions or messengers.
Stage 5: Distortion Campaign
The shorts step in and increase selling on every possible up tick. Just as with the pump, newsletters, e-mail, PR firms against P & D, etc. are simulated. Expertise in the field is recruited for credibility. Any possible twist using POS (Purposely Omitted Syntax) and PAS (Purposely Added Syntax) is conveniently used on every possible angle. If the POS/PAS is discovered then attack the messenger. Above all control the message boards.
The group clutters the message boards so no positive information can be readily found. Justification is the Value of the Company in the market. Projections of $0.00 worth and loss projections of 100%
Note: The market manipulator will do everything in his/her power to keep buyers OUT OF THE STOCK. Cut your losses is touted to stimulate fear. You bought higher but now they need you to sell lower.
Stage 6: Pressure
The shorts have taken it too far. The volume is increasing and the price is not effectively dropping. A stalemate occurs. Personal attacks increase. Threats of legal action, SEC involvement, and yes even death threats increase. Increased secret IDs are employed to increase the cluttering, personal attacks and the distortion. So begins a string of lies that run for as long as one's stomach can take it. Desperately playing on the "you have been had" scenario. Any new news will be hit it hard by shorters to kill any interest.
Note: Watch the volume not the share price. A market manipulator will have various brokers buying and selling the stock to give the APPEARANCE of increasing volume but the price goes down. Thus stimulating the story the company is selling or an off shore reg S or other convenient scenario. Watch for large blocks that show up but have a MM special code, cross overs, etc.
Stage 7: The Cover
Without warning the buying pressure is too much and the short begins to cover. Short covering combined with new investors buying into the stock causes the stock to go up. Often the whole thing starts again. Just a vicious cycle sometimes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: Pump & Dump schemes I have seen are investigated by the SEC most of the time, however the Short & Distort scheme is not apparently high on the SEC's agenda. The shorts, unlike the dumper though, has an unlimited loss factor should the stock price go up.
Remember this is just my personal opinion. Check with a licensed financial professional on all matters of the stock market.

Dan,
Just like any other profession there are people who are dedicated and good at their job and there are people not so dedicated and good at their job. LE officers are no exception. It starts at the top of the organization and works it's way down. If your Chief is dedcated the force by and large will be too. If the Chief is more interested in "making it" politically or with the new dispatch officer, the force will be more likely to step outside the boundries of professionalism in performing their duties.
I used to live across the street from a small town Chief. It was not unusual for him to bang loudly on his front door and scream at his wife at 3am for having locked him out of the house while he was carousing around town in his car that said "Chief" on the door panel.
None of his neighbors was surprised when he was finally run out of town for "messing with" a young girl hired to work dispatch. Nor when two officers under his command were fired for abusing their position by "letting off" young attractive females stopped for alleged traffic violations, if they would go out with them. None of these crimes (nor any of the many others) were ever prosecuted. Though that small town is much larger and has a much better run police force, it still suffers from the stigma attached to it by that group of bad cops.
My point in all of this is that instead of making comments about "media inspired LE prejudice" due to all of the negative exposure engendered by the unprofessional among LE officers, perhaps LE should be less lenient in dealing with offenders within it's ranks. You'll still have the bad apples, but John Q. Public will know that you hate them as much as we do. A sign of a good modern police force is the same attention is given to the criminal that wears a badge as is the criminal that doesn't.

Being a former denizen of RB
I must disagree with the following
>>30% of the posters there back up their posts with facts.
70% spout off trying to sound like they know what they are talking about.
5% can back up what they post with facts that match what they post.
25% post facts that don't relate to their point (they get an "E" for effort)
69% try to sound like they know what they are talking about, they usually fail but they keep trying anyway
1% Don't know, Don't care. just looking to stir up trouble. (guess this is the only way they can feel empowered in their otherwise miserable existence).
IMHO, Joe is a one percenter.

>>So their purpose is to make money and not educate/inspire people?
Can't they do both? Sounds like a plan to me.
Make money spreading the Gospel!
Didn't the DeVos Brothers make billions educating and inspiring people to sell soap?
Does Tony Robbins ring a bell?
Tell me politicians don't make money...and some of them aren't all that inspiring!

I've not noticed anything unusual in performance.
BTW, you are doing a fine job keeping the site running smoothly and getting things upgraded in a timely fashion. Looking forward to the new features as they come.
See, I do pass out compliments where they are due! 8>)

Josh,
Point is...you are right. We shouldn't be including such large files (GIF's JPG's and such) in our every post. It eats up too much BW and is a hinderance to site performance. If the majority want to allow GIFs in Siglines, the majority would be wrong (but the majority has been wrong before). Yes it is fun, but it is fun at someone else's expense. Now that I know Bob has some ideas to bring some of the better tools from the Old BBS days to IH, there will be plenty of opportunity for personalization to satisfy those of us that are left brain dominated.
Can it be true? a left brained conservative?
