Novotel Hyderabad 1st Hyderabad Green Globe Hotel
Novotel Hyderabad has achieved the prestigious Green Globe Certified status under the global Certification programme. The global programme recognises Novotel Hyderabad’s commitment to operating at the world’s highest environmental standard.
The Novotel Hyderabad was assessed according to eight performance criteria that will guarantee, among other things, better waste management, less pollution, and energy and water consumption control. After a benchmarking phase of six months, the Novotel Hyderabad was audited in order to obtain Green Globe certification, and will undergo the same process every year in order to guarantee that the criteria are maintained.
Green Globe provides a framework for organizations to achieve the desired outcomes for sustainable tourism as set out in the final report of the World Summit for Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg in 2002. The Certification process involves either an onsite audit or offsite assessment by an independent third party Green Globe Accredited Assessor
“We are indeed excited about being the first ever hotel in the city to be Green Globe certified. We chose to demonstrate our commitment to the environment by undertaking Certification - the highest level of the Green Globe programme. The successful completion of the Certification process demonstrates Novotel Hyderabad’s strong commitment to the principles of environmental sustainability. Increasingly organisations are becoming more and more conscious of eco-friendly procedures and are seeking to be associated only with like-minded partners. I am confident that the sustainable development programme at Novotel Hyderabad will offer us an unprecedented edge,” says Pavithran Nambiar, General Manager, Novotel Hyderabad.
Stewart Moore, CEO of EC3 Global (management company of Green Globe) says: “I am delighted that Novotel Hyderabad has achieved Certified status. Novotel Hyderabad is a prime example of being committed to environmentally sustainable tourism. They have demonstrated through a variety of initiatives, that their business and its employees can make a difference by reducing their environmental impact. The commitment they have shown in their achievements and by participating in the Green Globe programme set an example for other businesses to follow.”
By 2010 100% of Novotel hotels will be participating in the Green Globe environmental certification programme. By doing so Novotel has become the leading hotel brand in the segment to involve its entire network in sustainable development..

PATA CEO Challenge 2008
What was the PATA CEO Challenge 2008?
It was the first opportunity for the entire travel and tourism industry in Asia Pacific to agree to practical solutions to confront climate change.
Full and free public access to PATA CEO Challenge 2008: Confronting Climate Change proceedings is available right here!
Green Solutions Make Good Business Sense
Peter de JongCollaborative Opportunities Emerge from PATA CEO Challenge 2008: Confronting Climate Change
Delegates at the inaugural PATA CEO Challenge 2008: Confronting Climate Change agreed to collaborate on a range of initiatives to confront climate change, such as Banyan Tree’s green audit programme, Intrepid Travel’s project management plan, and Expedia’s World Heritage Alliance.
The CEO Challenge successfully facilitated the sharing of these valuable, practical initiatives. And I am delighted that so many industry leaders – from all sectors of travel and tourism – accepted the challenge to share their thoughts, ideas and actions on climate change.
The event has definitely delivered on our goals, with so many good ideas, innovative programmes and practical solutions, and, most importantly, opportunities for collaborative action.
More than 350 people, including officials of the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports, registered media and accompanying persons, engaged in the day-and-a-half programme, including a welcome reception and dinner hosted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
One of the more general take-aways from the event is a simple action plan that any leader of a travel and tourism organisation can follow:-
Start a discussion with your management team and Board to agree on principles and priorities for a climate change strategy
Create a compelling vision to ensure internal and external stakeholder support
Conduct an environmental audit; set targets; measure, verify and record results (There are specialised service providers, such as Green Globe, that can assist)
Communicate your environmental action plan with internal and external stakeholders
Where emission reductions are impractical, offer optional offset charges to your customers and provide adequate incentives for their take-up
More specific recommendations for action came out the six Boardroom Challenge breakout sessions on the first day, which focused on airlines, airports/aviation, destinations, distribution, global hotels and resorts, and regional hotels and resorts.
While each sector had its unique opportunities for collaboration, a common theme running through all of them was the need for industry associations such as PATA to advocate, educate and facilitate.
PATA is committed to carrying forward the momentum generated by this event. We will develop our website to create an information portal for continuing the dialogue on best practice and collaborative action, and we will upload all the presentations and outcomes from the CEO Challenge, with edited video clips of key sessions.
We also plan to produce a highlights package – including edited film clips – which can be used by PATA members, PATA Chapters and other partner organisations to share CEO Challenge outcomes with new audiences.
PATA will also formally endorse the declaration from April's aviation and environment summit in Geneva, signed by global aviation leaders including the International Air Transport Association (IATA). And we are committed to further collaboration on climate change and the broader issues of sustainability with the UNWTO, and other associations.
I would like to express my appreciation to the CEO Challenge hosts the TAT, partners Burba Hotel Network (BHN) and the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA), and all of the sponsors, supporters, advocates, moderators, panelists and delegates for their commitment to action and willingness to be part of the solution. And to Green Globe, which applied its science and systems to help significantly reduce the carbon footprint of key elements of the event.
PATA will organise another CEO Challenge. All the positive energy and discussion generated at the inaugural event suggests we have struck on a winning formula.
To those who "rose to the Challenge" in 2008, we welcome your feedback on how to make the event better.
We trust all stakeholders will want to be "part of the solution" at the next PATA CEO Challenge.

The creation of a Sustainable Tourism Stewardship Council (STSC) moves a step closer to becoming a reality as a coalition of international organisations agree to establish a body that increases credibility around sustainable tourism certification programmes, and ultimately helps protect the environment, rights and livelihoods of local communities. The United Nations Environment Programme, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation and the United Nations Foundation are amongst the supporters of this initiative. As part of this joint scheme, they will work with the Rainforest Alliance, an international environment organisation, and other non-governmental organizations (NGO) and industry groups, to raise funds, recruit stakeholders and launch the STSC in early 2009.
"With tourism as the world's largest industry, and nature-related tourism the fastest growing market segment of the industry, certification programmes have become more relevant than ever to help conservation and community development through sustainable tourism operations," said Tensie Whelan, president of the Rainforest Alliance, who was listed last year by Ethisphere magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in business ethics. "We are delighted that various UN agencies, NGOs and industry leaders are committed to getting the STSC off the ground."
If not executed properly, tourism can be a damaging industry: rapid development and improper management can overwhelm a vulnerable natural area, contributing to pollution and erosion, disturbing wildlife and once-isolated cultures. However, certification can address the impacts of tourism through a process of assessing compliance with pre-established criteria. Credible and transparent certification programmes provide a tool to reward tourism operations exhibiting best practices and differentiate them from others that are less environmentally and socially sound. Through sound certification tourism businesses can channel the effort to alleviate poverty and generate respect for local communities in countries rich in natural and cultural resources. However a missing tool to make certification effective has been the lack of a council that will unite the dozen of programs that currently exist.
The STSC will become the accreditation body that will endorse sustainable tourism certification programmes. It will create the first set of comprehensive global requirements that such programmes will have to meet.
Amongst its responsibilities, the STSC will issue a seal of approval to certification programmes that meet accreditation requirements; evaluate the social and environmental impacts of STSC-accredited certification programmes; and provide guidance for the establishment of new certification programmes in countries where there are none.
Introducing an STSC will bring about many benefits to the tourism industry. Governments will be able to call on the STSC to assist them in raising the profile of destinations with high environmental standards. It will also provide legitimacy and credibility to all those sustainable tourism certification programmes that meet STSC requirements, and through its seal-of-approval, differentiate from those programmes that have lower standards and weaker certification practices.
Speaking about the necessity of the STSC, Erika Harms, Executive Director for Sustainable Development of the UN Foundation said: "The STSC will give tourists the confidence that programs are audited, accredited and will continuously monitor those programmes that are serious about social and environmental accountability. This will also improve the quality of information that tourists can consider when planning their trips and will make it easier for them to make smart choices when they travel."
The Rainforest Alliance has provided technical and administrative support for the STSC initiative since 2001. Having achieved this and other commitments to sustainable tourism, the Rainforest Alliance and its Director of Sustainable Tourism Program, Ronald Sanabria, have also been recognised with the prestigious 2009 Friend of Nature award, in Costa Rica.
