Your description of Frank made me think of Steve Jobs. He was SO overbearing and controlling that the board of directors pretty much fired him from his own company! He went on to create NEXT computers (precursor to OSX operating system) and ran PIXAR. When he came back to Apple, their quality, ingenuity, and pps rose significantly.
If Frank really is as you say AND can back up that ego with talent, tenacity and brains, then Q could really become something big.
"There's a fine line between clever and stupid" -Spinaltap
Amen to that! :)
Maybe you should 'announce' that you 'plan' to have the training and lunch on your website instead.
Microsoft will have delays in releasing software to MILLIONS of peole who already have a prior version and are eagerly waiting for the new one. Microsoft is in a no-fail situation. Doesn't matter how delayed Microsoft gets, they know that once they DO come out with the product, it will sell off the shelves in minutes. Quite different from Q who is trying to get new people to come on board and trust. When Q is delayed at this stage of the game, they can hurt their chances of getting the millions of people that Microsoft already has.
Funny that people compare a startup with a mega ton prize fighter like Microsoft.
Read: We didn't finish it. We didn't shoot it. We don't have it?
That's bull. When is the MSNBC show airing? Was it last night? If not, then Q's would have aired first, making MSNBC look like they were jumping on the Liz bandwagon. Instead, now if Q airs their tribute after MSNBC's, Q looks like they are jumping on the bandwagon.
I'm sorry, knowing that another network is planning the same type of show should NOT stop you from putting out your show ahead of them. With that logic, Q should announce they aren't going ahead with their network at all because 'some ther guys' are creating a gay network to be out next year.
MSNBC is being used as an excuse, and a poor one at that.
I'm "hoping to announce the day after that" you gave it to me as a tax free gift.
pumping and bringing nothing to the table is just as bad, if not worse. And I don't consider myself a complainer by any stretch. I try to be neutral. That means when something is going good, I give it it's props. When something is not going so well, and dates are missed without explanations, then I have concern and wonder what can be done differently the next time to avoid such errors.
YSTFU!!!!!!!!! Nothing has been proven YET. If the PR tomorrow comes like today's says, then fine, I'll STFU.
All true hypothesies. There are a lot of reasons why a deal can fall through. What I'm saying is, if he never put out PRs that announce ahead of time that there will be a future announcement, then if that future announcement never comes (deal fell through etc..), he won't look like a liar. Keep it under the table until it's a done deal. Simple. Also, more clarity in the PRs would be a good thing. I'm tired of reading cryptic PRs that may or may not be hiding clues as to what he's really trying to say. Be straight forward and say what needs to be said and that's it. No "coming soon" or "late next week" crap.
It's fairly obvious why I contacted them, to check up on my investment. If Frank doesn't like that I sent an email to verify something, then he can give my money back. I haven't contacted comcast or direct tv or any other major corporation. I sent a short email to an internet based travel company asking about partners/affiliates and link placements.
I am not a sheep as you seem to be. I bet that if I write up a story about Q because of my DD, you would turn around and post a link to it on ihub as part of your DD.
We are all doing our part to boost the morale behind Q. I don't want to do it blindly, that's all.
"hopes to announce tomorrow..." He can't come through when he names specific dates with specific details, to now phrase it as "Hopes" seems even less viable. No one will know until tomorrow I guess.
What is the purpose of releasing a PR where the main content is to announce REAL news in a future PR? Putting out all these types of PRs and then NOT following through on them really makes him look bad. If he never put out those types of PRs, then a) he wouldn't look bad when he didn't follow through with the REAL PR and b) If he DID come through with a REAL news PR without telegraphing it first, it'd have a much greater impact. (boxing ref.)
When checking into the validity of a company I have invested my money in, I will contact anyone necessary to confirm or debunk questionable actions.
Whereas I can see an overload of questions from investors could be a pain in the vendors' ass, I can also see where if one is doing something shady, they wouldn't want anyone to check up and find out. Since I have heard of no one else on this board contacting Orbitz, I'm sure my little email has done no harm.
DD doesn't just include scouring the internet for stories other people have written about your investment. It can also include asking questions, doing some investigating and coming up with your own stories.
I emailed them about partners/affiliates and do they put all their partner's links on their site. Specifically asking whether Q was a partner, an affiliate, or none of the above. I've gotten no response as of yet.
SteelDrajin, W3Research is correct. Qbid's graphic link to Orbitz states that Orbitz is "The official travel partner of Q Television" but when you follow the link, you get the orbitz standard "Gay and Lesbian" page, NOT a Q page. Also, if you look at Orbitz's partner page, Q is not listed.
It could be that Q is a partner to Orbitz and Orbitz's webmaster is a bit behind in updates, or maybe Q is simply an affiliate. If the latter, Orbitz doesn't seem to have a listing of affiliates like they do partners.
OT: Prego (sp?) eom.
I guess most of the sites I found articles about short selling had old articles, prior to SHO. Thanks for the education.
Attacking someone's buying/selling habits is what doesn't make any sense. Truth is you don't know why anyone does or doesn't do what they do. All you know, at face value I might add, is that someone who doesn't do what you would do seems stupid to you.
As you see a stranger, you see yourself. As you treat a stranger, you treat yourself. Never forget this because in this stranger you will either find or lose yourself.
That's great news CT, thanks!
I thought shorting doesn't apply to pink sheet stocks?!?
You've got to be kidding?
Doesn't the Q stand for Queer?
Ellen Huang looks cute in that photo!
It would seem the money Here! saves by not having any original programming can go towards their advertising?
That is possibly the worst looking website I have ever seen. (jaw dropped) All the text was displaying on top of one another. The Q logo was halfway into the black on the left. At least that's how it looked on my OSX mac using the latest Safari browser.
Still, it's nice they are putting Q info up.
Who knows who wrote that card for Letterman to read? A comedy writer? David himself? An intern? I mean come on, he read it like any regular person who knew nothing of Q as if it was thrown together by someone else for the "bit" with someone's interpretation of what can be found online. ie.they may have 'thought' Q was to debut later this month.
The positive pump is that it was a grand orchestration by someone at Q to help spread the word and raise interest.
The negative pump is that probably to the average straight person across middle America, the thought of an all gay television network is a funny thing. One of the writers might have come across something about Q (the "Today" ad came out 1/6/05, top ten list was 1/10/05) and thought it'd be fun to poke fun at with some fictitiously named shows.
I do agree with what qbid posted before about any news is good news.
The thing about those two views is that they are polar opposites. Somewhere in the middle is probably closer to the 'truth.' However, we don't know.
Look at the mistake Dan Rather made with Bush's National Guard record? Just because something is spoken or in print or online does not make it so. David is a comedian and was doing a comedy bit. He is not a news broadcaster.
I'm all for keeping spirits up, (insert smiley face here :) ) but how about doing it for the sake of keeping the spirit up and not because of any attachments to some pieces of information that are lacking in fact and have a surplus of speculation?
I appreciate all the positivity about Q, but not to the extent of blatant pumping and "never mind the man behind the curtain" smoke and mirrors cheerleading. I love hearing the factual positives and ideas just as much as the factual negatives. To always find a positive pump with every bit of news somehow loses it's positive effect and slips slowly into denial. Like the perfect nutso wife who killed herself in the first episode of Desperate Housewives. Of course, all of this is just my opinion.
OT: I second that! NAMM is an experience every musician from all styles of music shoud have. I used to work in a music store back in Michigan, and had to go to both NAMM shows each year. It was nice to go to this one and look around as a spectator, not as a representative.
I literally bumped into Dave (DKgross) the first day. I hadn't even called him on the phone yet and bam! there he was. We talked for a couple minutes and split up. I didn't go back down to the show until Sunday, but he had left that morning.
Great show.
I've read in SO many success based books that to be successful, one needs to surround themselves with others who are more knowledgable than they are. If Frank's expertise is staying in house and building the network, then I salute the checking of ego and hiring someone else more equipped to get the job done.
I don't think the eTrade extended hours price is ever reflecting a real price. I think it's there to get you to sign up for that service. I am on eTrade and have noticed that extended hours quote before, yet no other service including etrade shows .012 on any charts. Just for clarity though, you might want to call etrade and ask them what it's about.
I disagree! When someone like Froy turns positive, it's time to sell and get out because he's already missed the boat. IMO
Exactly Froy: We just don't know. That's the most true thing I have ever read that you have written. Why don't you take it upon yourself to investigate exactly WHY pridevision failed? Since you are so keen on bringing it up, maybe you should know all about it first. Was it the content? The Pridevision management? The contracts? The carrier? I would love to know.
6 successful network launches by her compared to 1 failed one is still a great track record. What person or company do you know of that is 100% home runs? I like that pridevision failed because I'm SURE there were lessons learned. Things she may or may not do again... companies she may or may not get involved with.
Froy, is the sky constantly falling over your house or something? Better move to a new neighborhood. Your comments about PR seem to indicate you are looking at each one individually to move the PPS. IMO it's the overall sum of PR's and the fact that they are showing forward movement that will eventually, little by little, move the PPS.
I swear if one more person turns into a 3 year old screaming and crying as if someone took their toys that, "Here! doesn't hire anyone, they do it themselves. Here! is already on comcast. Mommy, why can't we be like Here!???"
If Q turned into a Video On Demand just like Here! is, then you may as well dump all your stock and take your toys and go home because you would never make any money holding stock in a VOD service based company.
Any VOD company like Here! would never need a marketing firm. Q needs one because they are a network trying to get comcast's attention. It was stated that comcast is not looking for new networks, but they will listen. You need some sort of pitch from an experienced marketing company to make the meetings with comcast most productive. Comcast was however looking for VOD services, which explains how easy it must have been for Here! to get picked up.
Q cannot do what Here! has done because Q is not the same type of company. They do not provide simple video on demand. Q has a MUCH higher overhead than Here! as well as a greater responsibility to produce original, up to date content. Didn't you read the article posted by jcradio where the head programmers at comcast explained how they were looking for VOD services because it's very easy to put on? What happens when the 5~10% (my guess) of people who would possibly order a movie/show from Here! watch everything they would want to see? I'll tell you: they won't order any more. I give Here! maybe a year or two before they show signs of being able to sustain themselves or not IF they do indeed come up with a network format that's remotely close to what Q is already doing now.
Here! is as much a threat to Q as any company (that currently does not have any equipment or programming etc..) starting up a queer network. A VOD company has no need for writers, directors, host personalities, remote news vans, offices, cameras or studios. Their whole arsenal of equipment is geared towards video playback. ie.a bunch of movies and shows recorded to tape or a computer system waiting to serve up the content IF it's needed.
If they are moving towards a more conventional network setup, they have to get alllllll those ducks in a row AND make the product seem as good or better than what Q is already perfecting on a day to day basis.
I see Q as the one smart bird wayyy ahead of the flock with a good year of broadcast experience between them. No worries.
Need more $$$$ for more shares! DOH!
GREAT article jcradio! It seems clear to me after reading it how simple it must have been for Here! to get carried as a VOD service. It's what comcast is encouraging startups to come out with. The fact that VOD startup is easier shows me that Q is taking a more challenging route, but the payof is 10 times or more bigger. This line made me crack up:
"Everybody in America wears socks, but no one wants to see the Sock Channel."
I dunno... I might watch the sock channel... depends who the hosts of the shows were. LOL
Comcast talking about Rasenberger in broadcasting cable article posted by jcradio:
Comcast programming chief Matt Bond says she is "good at pulling together a pitch, focusing that pitch, and focusing on what the operator wants."
Nice that Comcast already seems to respect her...
VOOM being discussed on CNBC right now. Big losses... say, "Voom is Boom". Also, they are loosing most of their subscribers to DirecTV. They are in huge debt. Areas they DO like in cable: Comcast-top pick in their group, Think they are gonna benefit significantly from the Adelphia auction and the unwinding of their stake in TIme/Warner cable. They also like Direct TV, satellite company. - Thomas Eagan, Oppenheimer.
DK:Do you know when Here! first approached comcast or how long they were in negotiations before the deal was finalized? Could be the difference.
My last post for the day :(
I don't know. The way it was worded, it could be interpreted that they had to comply with HD standards for consideration or that they complied with certain requirements of all national carriers and as an added bonus, make it's signal available in hd. There are other ways to word the following to better solidify what the true meaning is:
"Q television will comply with requirements of all national carriers AND make it's signal available in high definition."
It doesn't specifically say that HD was one of those requirements.
I was simply pointing out as much as people see extreme negativity in something, others will see extreme positivity. Neither is correct. Neither is healthy. Living at the outer reaches of polar opposites isn't living in reality. It is either hopeful, or doubtful rather than accepting of what is. Both are based on control issues.
I appreciate and accept "what is" for you, but the fact that you stated "rose colored glasses" means you are admitting you're not being partial or neutral with the info. I'm all for feeling good, but not at the expense of fooling myself.
Being as neutral as I can in this moment, IMO the PR's are and have been poorly written. They could get worse, stay the same, or improve.
Welcome. In a nutshell, HD is like looking through a window at the real world vs. viewing a recording of it. First time I ever saw it, I was in Japan at the Sony building. They had an HD screen showing a fish tank and at first I thought it was a real fish tank. It can be that good. Ad to that surround sound audio and you've got an incredible platform for entertainment.
OT: message board time warp. By the time I get up and check out the board, there are 300 new posts to read. I go into overdrive reading, re-reading, sometimes commenting... by the time I catch up with the newest post, I feel like I've hit a brick wall! LOL. I keep hitting refresh thinking something's wrong with my browser. Weird sensation indeed. Like I've heard a party going on in the next room but by the time I open the door, everyone has gone.
