porter-- love those icebergs. I've sold most treasuries at a nice gain + collected int. Now sad some corps were unloaded as they had LT maturities & pd in the 7% - 9.5% range. Still holding some-- but wih only 7+% gains it hardly seems worth it UNTIL interest recd and m-mkt rates are considered. As for ANY M-fund,, performance sux and a deaf, dumb, & blind man should do better.
<<"1.59 million shares in WilTel Communications Group of Tulsa, Okla.,">>
<<" Berkshire also reported holding 879,000 shares in fiber-optic network
company Level 3 Communications Inc. of Broomfield, Colo., worth
$4.5 million as of March 31.">>
<<"Last July, Berkshire Hathaway and two other investors agreed to
invest a total of $500 million in Level 3 bonds convertible to stock to
help it fund acquisitions.">>
Look at L-3 as a favor to a friend, but holding friends collateral. CEO @ L3 is a director at Berkshire. Next look at the total investment,,, peanut shells for berkshire. Wish It would come down so I can buy more..
<<"It will consist of 3500 Nasdaq stocks.">> with a little bad luck & hard drop the nas may be hard pressed to find 85% of that number... probably only about 65% deserve to survive the next few years.
greenehugh-- if interested in the ed issues try wpo on a pullback under $700.00. kaplan is profitable and growing + buying ed COs worldwide.
<<"That was the view from Oracle's..">> Nothing unusual for ORCL to be looking for every excuse they can remotely relate to their performance. As with SUNW, the whinning will continue even in good times,,, although SUNW may not survive independently that long.
Very true. Each sector-- often indiv companies will vary greatly. Just one of many indicators that show PE is not always to be relied upon as it is too easy to manipulate.
Ahhh-- yes, GAAP gives one a slight idea of what is happening. For my swings the GAAP P/E has less weight than P/S as sales are more difficult to fudge. Neither carry the weight of steady/rising divs as there has to be real profit to pay the div. None of the above carry much weight at all on daytrades,,, just go with the flow.
Orvis-- The real question is why would anyone want to live in or visit CA? The RE mkt is insane & few can actually 'live' there, just maintain employment to pay the mortgage. It is a game trying to see who can find the bigger fool to buy before there are zero buyers left. In the mean time @ 55 one can live in OH, have a condo on the SC beach and spend the warmest part of summer in Toronto. Yes, that 4 letter word beginning with "W" is not required to waste as much of ones time on earth to pay mortgages anywhere as it is in CA.
augieboo-- Rolled on the floor this weekend after seeing a CA couple pay $400K for a house that would not hit $70K in OH. The cosmetics were in place for $65K - $70K but it would not be sold in present condition due to difficulty in getting a loan. As a 'fixer upper' a RE investor may have dropped $50K - $55K to be used as a rental after repairs were made. With the problems it had no realtor would touch it & the couple thought they found a bargain. The condition it was in would have a landlord fined in many areas of the country. Anyone thinking the tech bubble saw $$$ disappear will get a real eye opener when CA drops into the Pacific one day.....
"<< martial law will be declared and "urban" music outlawed.">> Then lets get it moving to get this noise outlawed and the perps jailed------ would execution be asking too much? Calling the disturbance "music" should be enough to have one heavily fined with a 50 year suspended sentence to begin on the next indiscreation with no chance of parole.
techanalyst1-- That is a the best indiator ever. Now just find a means of charting her movements for those that only move on line wiggles-- you can help her become a multi-millionaire yet! Thanks for the chuckle!
TG -- I think you are correct. People have more credit than they need, deserve, or can use (if sane). I've heard of people using more than 1 0% card to pay off vehicles & buy 'stuff' that would certainly be listed as NOT required. However, nearly all are using them to pay down more expensive debt. The amount of offers I receive weelkly is obscene but good for the rev of the USPS and it gives my shredder something to do. Makes you wonder how it can be down until you look at your money market rates. Besides, no one is going to 'lock in' any LT rates at these levels on anything so those offering credit seem safe. The bank will give you 2% on a LT CD and these cards jump to 7.99% or more. Then there is the rate structure where you may actually get the 8% and your neighbor with the same offer gets 15%. Not bad,,,,,, for the card companies..
<<"The share of banks that reported tightening standards for credit cards and other consumer loans has held between 10 and 13 percent for the past two years. Demand for consumer loans was about unchanged.">> Does this mean the avg of 3 daily credit card ads will disappear from my mailbox? Every day I am informed of the wonderful credit rating and special offers. Seems the banks will do anything to get people to borrow. The credit card mail keeps my shredder busy every day!
Godfrey-- exactly why I have held & traded brk for decades. Look back 7 years and you could have bought BRKA for $35K -- today it is slightly more than double that. Foreven greater returns trading the B shares works,,,,,, and is fun too.
True, besides they collect their fees and mgrs receive rediculous salary/bonus no matter how poor the performance!
LOL! Bought the AM DIP long before your suggestion.. all nice & green. You could try and be a little more timely,,LOL!
George-- I've sold much of the LT corps and ST too that I was holding, all investment grade. Sold some junk but holding a bunch of HYF still. I do not think it is done yet & really am not too concerned. The div is good and cap gains on this one is almost obscene.
LOL! & I thought----- I have some old rock & etc + sets of Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey-- Some old Sinatra,, Victor, Columbia, & Decca along with the more popular companys... Still have a turntable too... did not think there were many into that stuff,,
mlsoft-- gotta agree,,,,, I've been unloading some long positions and a little corp bonds too. Buying nothing until we see a drop,,,,,,,, not a dip or pullback but a drop. Easy to swing trade in this mkt with little fear if one is patient.
mlsoft-- CSCO would be on target minus '1'. The '1' in front of the 5. Actually, why it is in single digits is questionable.
mlsoft-- Possibly just the opposite. Forgien currency coming into the mkts now may be looking for a double gain, 1 one the investment and another on a possible rise in the USD. The $ may not have much farther to go--- esp with some of the EU countries in more trouble than the US.
Thank you Mr Buffett,, more BRKB sold,,,,,,,,, now give me the pull back to reload!
Yes Benj, They always have all kinds of things going on from Thurs thru at least Sun, Mon sort of closes things down. This is the 1st one I missed in a long time as my mother recovers from surgeory. Will begin planning for next year soon as hotel rooms near by are taken early. Although vans are provided to transport participants, I've found having my own vehicle much more comfortable. Actually, you can probably find enough bargains to bring home driving can really make things easier.
Benj-- BRKA & B have been great to hold,, the "B" shares have been fantastic trading issues also. I cannot remember a Monday after the annual mtg all brkb did not run nicely. I have stated here some of my trades with the B shares. I began buying last Wed & continued through Fri. Sadly, I sold early today and only had an avg of about $81 per share. Had I held until near the close the avg would have been over $100. Holding even 1 B share permits one to attend the annual mtg with up to 3 guests-- always has been a good time----- even in Omaha!
Agreed George. I've been selling corp bonds & holding the junk. The junk is holding up much better & paying much better too.
He said indicated still holding over $1B--- but has not bought any this year simply because the prices have risen. I'm not adding either but certainly enjoying the monthly divs,,,
Would have liked the cable--but when it went down Fri at 10AM and they could not have it up for a Tues mkt open they were told their junk was on the porch and went to Earthlink for a short time until DSL was connected. No problems! Never shuts down. Service has not been required since installed over a year ago. A funny thing-- RR is the same service as EL will provide for about $5 per month less. Then members of the DAV can receive a $3 per month discount. It would be less expensive than DSL but RR is still the base provider,,, no thanks,, but the cable service for TV is fine- just over priced.
May have agreed with you until I tried Roadrunner. Found their contract installers ok to butcher a line in (thankfully I installed dedicated cable lines for TV & I-nut when building). When it goes down-- it really goes down. The time frame it was down was ugly & often. Found when a problem was reported the people knew less than nothing on how to deal with it and preferred to blame the individual systems of customers-- no matter how many from the same side of town. They were not capable of completeing an easy fix that they were informed of in days. DSL has had zero problems. Additionally, at least one system is always set up for dial-up just in case the same stuff happens,,,
Rukeyser has the "TOP 3" TA people on tonight I hear. Supposedly 2 of 3 are bullish??? Probably all from different directions and using diff charts & data.. may just pop the tube on for 30 min to hear what they have to say,,,,,,,,,,,,
Now-- where did the rankings come from??? Could they be the committee of 3 that set the rankings??
Actually Maine-- I think I've pulled most & will just let some issues & M-funds take the long ride to who cares as I search for the untimate Great Lakes cruiser in the 30' - 38' range. Get a few months of the GL and head to NC or SC for the winter. Chasing bulls & bears is getting boring in retirement. Besides-- caves sound dark & damp, which reminds me-- gotta make certain a good AC unit is onboard. Well-- it will be required to have a 'puter with a wireless modem just to play once in awhile..LOL!
MKT_en-- find me someone that can do 50% as well as Buffet has done for me for many years,,, PLEASE! LOL! I would drop some BRK to give them a few of my bux to play with too... I cannot do what he has done,, doubt he can kep it up at this level-- but if I did not play,, what fun would retirement be?
SOX-- had some REAL old GE & others. S/Ls in on all. When the pullback came the stops hit. I certainly made Uncle Sam happy,, now I have some OLD M-funds that are looked at once a year, and about the only LT stuff I have is BRKB, WPO, & HYF. I may add some like GE, HON, MSFT, IBM, and others that were taken away (at much higher prices,LOL) when it looks like the mkt stabilizes-- if that ever happens-- to hold for the LT again. But I'm retired at 54 and wonder if I'll see a stable mkt again........
extelecom-- gotta agree with you. I have not been there in months,, not since my last suspension,,LOL. Might be time to go look again. So many real fools there one would think the site would be given to the Motley bunch. The SI gurus are now playing with Monopoly money as when the bear came,,,,,,,, they were ate alive since they held ground or dug deeper. Still,, a fun bunch when one has the time to play but many there take their errors too seriously,, may have something to do with losing their house??LOL
SoxFan-- my ideas on ge were not that great. Bought @ 21+ and sold @ 25++,,, shoulda- woulda-coulda. My best luck with trades is still hanging with BRKB.
me either-- hear some see them on SI too,, <GG>
mlsoft-- you look to be correct again. The indexes are holding flat today, lots of bears out there.. but all my longs except WPO are still green today. Thanks for a few more to look at. I'm looking for some 12 mo or longer holds. So far DPW, SWK, & DOW are on the list. KO would be if I did not hold so much BRKB,, and glw under 6 if I were looking at any techs,,, Maybe get my feet wet on a couple of those,,THANKS
<..little for the bears..>,,, NOW I have chest pains,LOL <eom>
Hi Bob,
No problems here,, always fast (hope I did not junx it now,LOL). Your work is appreciated by all,, even on Easter Sunday! Looked at my info. I'm looking fwd to renewing my subscription on 12/21/2112.. Thanks
Zeev-- been away for awhile. Looks like I'll lighten a few longs just in case today & add a few others... was John Mauldins letter of Fri on his thoughts of the ppt posted? I have long believed as he does..
Fed- (OT)~~~~ I hope you are correct. Looks to be about over. I wonder why they have been executing POWs and all intel points to Speicter still being alive. Stuff can still happen-- casualties can still occur, looking for some crap like idiots attacking the airport,, like bringing boxing gloves to a gun fight... some kids will grow old seeing the look on the faces of those they kill... some tough stuff could still be in the cards--- many places for ambush & snipers now,,, brings back memories from long ago--
