Russian server blamed for latest Web virus
Source of infection, which may have been aimed at stealing financial data, shut down
Robert Lemos, Cnet News.com
Saturday, June 26, 2004
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Web surfers are no longer playing Russian roulette each time they visit a Web site, security researchers said Friday after a far-reaching Internet attack had been disarmed.
The attack, which turned some corporate Web sites into points of digital infection, was halted Friday when Internet engineers managed to shut down a Russian server that had been the source of malicious code. Compromised Web sites are still trying to infect Web surfers' PCs by redirecting them to the server in Russia, but that computer can no longer be reached.
Security experts said the Russian server downloaded Trojan horse software onto a user's computer that could be used by a remote attacker to record keystrokes and steal valuable information such as passwords, credit card numbers and bank account information for remote delivery to hackers.
Cutting the link to the Russian server "stops the problem for the short term," said Alfred Huger, senior director of engineering for Symantec Corp., a security software company in Cupertino.
"However, it just takes a new culprit to come along and do the same thing, " Huger said. The Internet underground is increasingly using this type of attack as a way to get by network defenses and infect office workers' and home users' computers.
"It is a tremendously powerful way to get into a corporation," Huger said. "It is significantly easier to lure a number of employees to a compromised Web site than to get through a company's perimeter, which they may have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to secure."
The latest Internet attack, discovered by Microsoft Corp. on Thursday, appears to take advantage of three separate flaws in Microsoft products.
Stephen Toulouse, a security program manager at Microsoft, said software updates to fix two of them were released in April, but the third flaw was just discovered, so Microsoft has no patch available yet.
Toulouse recommended that computer owners get the latest security updates for Microsoft products and their antivirus and firewall programs. For the flaw that lacks a patch, he said, users should turn security settings on Microsoft's Internet Explorer browsers to the highest levels.
Users can also turn off the JavaScript feature on their Microsoft browsers, but doing so might cripple functions on some sites.
The virus does not affect Macintosh versions of Internet Explorer, nor does it spread through non-Microsoft browsers such as Mozilla and Opera.
Users can search their computers for the files Kk32.dll or Surf.dat to see if they are infected. Removal tools are available from major antivirus vendors.
Experts said the infection was unusually broad but wasn't substantially interfering with Internet traffic. The virus does not attempt to spread itself, thus helping to limit its effect.
Still, the network of compromised Web sites used in the attack is far larger than any before, said Johannes Ullrich, chief technology officer of the Internet Storm Center, a Net threat-monitoring site. "This is the first time that this many Web sites got hit," he said.
The U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team warned that any Web site, even those trusted by users, might have been used to spread the virus.

I did get it from the MSFT update site, any other suggestions? Thanks
Jal, it won't let me it wants to start over and then we repeat the cycle
Bruce, I have been trying to install IE6 and when I get part way thru it stops and says "The software you are installing has not passed windows logo testing to verify its compatability with Windows XP" What does that mean and what can I do? Thanks
Cash, yes I have tried other browsers and they work. Where can I find the repair deal you mentioned. Thanks!
Yes I can't say enough about Bruce, he is the Wizard.
I use a Actiontec DSL Gateway. I have DSL and it goes from the box to the phone line. Before I switched to DSL I was using dial-up and it stopped working on RB/Qtelevision so I figured it was a dial-up problem. Then when DSL arrived just a few weeks ago I figured that would fix the problem and it didn't. There has to be some setting in my computer that is causing this and I can't find it.
Not sure FF4 wants that title, CDVJ has been a nightmare for all of us. I still believe there is a nice run comming but have given up watching it everyday. FF4 Has taken some serious heat (no pun intended) on this issue! Keep on keeping on FF4!
STKS, Have done that and when I get there the same thing happens.
no I get a different site. When I use www.qtelevision.com I get the old site that has the black background and makes the strange sounds when you move the cursor over the email butoons and such
Yes Bruce got everything running better then I have ever seen it before it is amazing! I have tried using Dial-up/DSL thru dif companies to check that angle but still no luck. It has now become my mission in life to solve these small problems and I'm learning a ton. Thanks for all your imput!!!!!
skunks i just type in www.qtelevision.com, not sure what you mean by URL?
I have tried both ways, favorite and typing in www.ragingbull.com
STKS, I have checked in there. The problem with RB is that when I get there only the top opens and then it stops only to finish loading a minute or so later. Then the same thing happens when I click on a message to raed.
CT Here, Funny you should ask. I had Bruce fix every problem I had on my computer and it's running 1000% better but I still can't get RB to open up and I still get directed to the old web site. No one has any idea why and I have tried everything that anyone could think of. Oh well at least its running good.
I have had an order in at the ask for the last ten minutes and they won't fill it!

Large-Scale Internet Attack
CHICAGO, June 25, 2004
CBS/AP) Government and industry experts warned late Thursday of a mysterious, large-scale Internet attack against thousands of popular Web sites. The virus-like infection tries to implant hacker software onto the computers of Web site visitors.
Unlike some viruses and worms which have wreaked havoc by luring users into opening infected e-mail messages, this troublemaker can be activated merely by visiting a web site which - unknown to its users - has become infected.
Industry experts and the Homeland Security Department are studying the infection to determine how it spreads across Web sites and find adequate defenses against it.
"Users should be aware that any Web site, even those that may be trusted by the user, may be affected by this activity and thus contain potentially malicious code," the government warned in one Internet alert.
The infected Web sites attempt to implant on visitors' computers hacker software that allows others to use their computers to surreptitiously route Internet spam e-mails.
The mysterious infection appeared to target at least one recent version of software by Microsoft Corp. to operate Web sites, called its Internet Information Server, popular among businesses and organizations.
A spokesman for Microsoft declined to comment immediately.
PC World reported that a Finnish Internet security firm has linked the virus to a Russian hacker outfit called Korgo. The security firms says the virus, called Scob, directs victim PCs to a Web site where a Trojan horse is downloaded. This Trojan horse then captures passwords and logins and sends them to another Web site, where the hackers can download the information.
While antivirus firms are reportedly retooling their packages to defend against the virus, most observers say the virus is not causing any major disruptions.
"While this is significant, it has no impact on the operation of the Internet," said Marcus Sachs, who helps run the industry's Internet Storm Center in Bethesda, Md.
Experts urgently recommend that consumers and corporate employees update the antivirus software on their computers, since the latest versions can immunize visitors against infected Web sites.

LAS VEGAS, Jun 24, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- CMKM Diamonds, Inc. (Pink Sheets:CMKX) announced today it has just received preliminary results from the airborne magnetic survey recently completed by Goldak Airborne Surveys of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The survey was conducted during April, May and June 2004 using Goldak's Navaho aircraft equipped with a trimaxial magnetic gradiometer.
By employing this modern, state of the art geophysical equipment and flying a low-level, closely spaced survey, hundreds of magnetic anomalies were able to be identified. Some of these anomalies are obvious drill targets, while others will need further study by the Company's consultants.
Urban Casavant, president of the CMKM Diamonds, Inc., stated, "The company is very pleased with the results of the survey. For the first time in the history of diamond exploration in the Fort a' la Corne area, a complete and comprehensive magnetic picture of the whole area is available to the company."
The company intends to immediately pursue the most obvious targets by drill testing as soon as permitting and logistics allow. There are now more than enough targets to allow CMKX to drill continuously. On a final note, Urban Casavant stated, "These hundreds of anomalies have been filtered for elimination of farm equipment and steel buildings as a probable cause for such an impressive count of anomalies."
Safe Harbor Statement under the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995: The statements, other than the statements of historical facts, contained in this release which are not historical facts, may be deemed to contain forward-looking statements with respect to events, the occurrence of which involves risk and uncertainties, including, without limitation, demand and competition for the company's products and services, the availability to the company of adequate financing to support its anticipated activities, the ability of the company to generate cash flow from operations and the ability of the company to manage its operations.

Bruce I was able to use RB with a different browser someone suggested and it worked out ok so I don't know what the deal is with my IE, also the qbid website no matter how I try to approach it I get the old one. They didn't change the address they just updated the site and I can't get the new updates. My computer is running a lot faster though!
Bruce, I'm done and everything seems to be faster. I still have the issue of getting the old QBID website, and when I go to RB it only opens half way then stops only to continue opening a minute or so later. it seems to do this with all RB pages. My only other problem is I have several programs I want to remove but when I go to ADD/Rmove programs and click on them I get a Could not open Installlog.file What do you think?
AXFM, please don't take this as a pump or anything but my thoughts are we will see .10 "IF" we get the real news I think we are all expecting. Contracts, merger, advertisers and so on. I'm not banking on a merger I just throw that up in the air to see if it sticks. I feel if the news is real we will get there this week. If the right people see that this is really moving forward I think we will see some larger amounts of money comming in. The PR's will help in the majors with doing just that. Good Luck!
Bruce I finished that part. I couldn't remove Music Match when I tried to I got a Error, in fact I have a few programs I have tried to delete recently and I get errors. Quicktime was deleted. ready when you are! PS no apple anything here
Bruce I'm finished, Pal talk was on there and I couldn't find Nikon, music match, Dell support but I got the rest of them. My computer is also starting in selective start up now. I have taken the pit stop test again. Waiting for your orders. Oh yeah I can't seem to delete Dr. Speed from my computer either.
