For ZAP, the trials and tribulations have been worth it. Alex Campbell, one of the Santa Rosa, Calif.,-based electric vehicle maker's founders, said that win or lose, he’s betting his company will have a better chance of tagging along as bigger makers, like General Motors and Toyota, start pushing into the electric vehicle market.
“We’ve been on the outside looking in,” said Campbell, adding that during several recent shakedown events at the speedway about 80 miles west of Detroit he’s been able to make contact with conventional automotive suppliers who might be able to help him improve the way ZAP produces its battery cars.

BROOKLYN, Mich., July 27
Nine Vehicles from Seven Teams Continue in their Pursuit of a Multimillion Dollar Prize for Super Fuel-Efficient Cars
BROOKLYN, Mich., July 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE, a $10 million competition to inspire a new generation of super fuel efficient vehicles, announced today the Finalist teams who have survived all on-track testing at Michigan International Speedway (MIS), and who now move into a Validation stage before prize money will be awarded this September.

What began as a field of 136 vehicles from 111 teams has now been narrowed to an elite group of nine vehicles from just seven teams that have proven they can meet the strictest requirements of this competition, including the ability to achieve at least 90 MPGe on the way toward the ultimate 100 MPGe requirement and to survive grueling dynamic safety and range tests. The teams represent a wide variety of backgrounds that include emerging start ups, entrepreneurs and universities from around the world. All have proven that they can more than handle a variety of very difficult real-world scenarios.
Finalists were required to pass a repeat of technical inspections and on-track Efficiency, Range and Dynamic Safety events conducted by the competition's technical team and auto test engineers from partner Consumer Reports.
"These finalists highlight true innovation in fuel efficiency, and prove that their vehicles have the ability to withstand strict safety, performance and emissions requirements. These cars redefine what is possible and set a new standard of efficiency that promises to revolutionize the industry," said Eric Cahill, Senior Director of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE.
"Congratulations to the finalist teams – it's clear that they are pushing the envelope in terms of automotive innovation," said Brian Silva, Progressive's Chief Marketing Officer. "Their breakthroughs will spur greater choices in fuel-efficient cars that everyone can afford."
Team standings and vehicle performance details are available at http://www.progressiveautoxprize.org/team-central. The following is a complete list of remaining teams, along with the class in which they compete and their fuel type:
Mainstream Class (Two vehicles, one team)
Edison2, Very Light Car #97 (Charlottesville, VA), Internal Combustion Engine
Edison2, Very Light Car #98 (Charlottesville, VA), Internal Combustion Engine
Alternative Class – Tandem (Two vehicles, one team)
X-Tracer, E-Tracer #72 (Switzerland), Battery Electric
X-Tracer, E-Tracer #79 (Switzerland), Battery Electric
Alternative Class – Side-by-Side (Five vehicles, five teams)
Aptera, Aptera 2e (San Diego, CA), Battery Electric
Li-ion Motors, Wave II (North Carolina), Battery Electric
RaceAbout Association, RaceAbout (Finland), Battery Electric
TW4XP, TW4XP (Germany), Battery Electric
ZAP, Alias (Santa Rosa, CA), Battery Electric
A Combined Performance and Efficiency Event will take place at Michigan International Speedway today to serve as the tie-breaker for the Alternative Class vehicles with side-by-side seating that go on to pass Validation Stage testing.
Tata Motors (Coventry, UK) was unable to present their Indica Vista EVX vehicle for the Range Test due to a technical issue. Although they will not be advancing, Tata will demonstrate their vehicle in tomorrow's Combined Performance and Efficiency Event, as will Amp's amp'd Sky (Cincinnati, OH), Commuter Cars' Tango (Spokane, WA), Spira's Spira4u (Carrollton, IL/Banglamung, Thailand), and Western Washington University's Viking 45 (Bellingham, WA).
Validation is the final technical event in the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE. Finalists in both the Mainstream and Alternative classes will undergo dynamometer testing under controlled laboratory conditions at Argonne National Lab facilities. The car in each class that exceeds 100 MPGe, meets the emissions and performance requirements, and, in the case of a tie, completes the Combined Performance and Efficiency challenge with the fastest time, will win. The $10 million prize purse will be presented at an Award Ceremony on September 16, in Washington, D.C.

ABOUT THE PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE AUTOMOTIVE X PRIZE
The goal of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE is to inspire a new generation of viable, super fuel-efficient vehicles that offer more consumer choices. Ten million dollars in prizes will be awarded to the teams that win a stage competition for clean, production-capable vehicles that exceed 100 Miles per gallon or energy equivalent (MPGe). The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE will place a major focus on efficiency, safety, affordability, and the environment. It is about developing real, production-capable cars that consumers will want to buy, not science projects or concept cars. This progress is needed because today's oil consumption is unsustainable and because automotive emissions significantly contribute to global warming and climate change. The ten million dollar purse and partial funding for prize operations was provided by Progressive Insurance. Additional major funding for education, outreach, and technical operations was provided by $9 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Energy. Additional funding for prize operations was provided by Cisco and private donors. An electric three-wheeled vehicle with roots in Maumee and Toledo has survived months of grueling testing to be one of just five teams left vying Tuesday for $2.5 million in prize money.
The battery-powered ZAP Alias, built by engineers at Applied Technologies Inc., in Maumee's Arrowhead Park, is one of the vehicles left in the alternative class of the $10 million Progressive Insurance Automotive X-Prize.
"This whole thing is very intense," said former Toledoan Chuck Turney, who joined ZAP, a 15-year-old publicly held company based in Santa Rosa, Calif., that produces and markets alternative modes of transportation.
Mr. Turney will pilot the ZAP Alias Wednesday on its final competitive laps at Michigan International Speedway before the competition's survivors are shipped off to Chrysler's proving grounds in Chelsea, Mich. to undergo additional testing.
"I'm keeping my fingers crossed. We believe we have a shot of winning this thing, but as competitors go, there are others with a chance to win this as well," Mr. Turney said.
The Alias spent a period this month in a garage near Toledo Speedway, where final modifications were made prior to the trip up to Michigan International.
The Alias is one of five teams left in the most competitive remaining category of the $10 million Automotive X-Prize competition, a race to develop commercially viable vehicles capable of achieving an equivalent of 100 miles per gallon.
The competition was created by the X Prize Foundation - which also held a similar challenge for space travel - with $10 million awarded to teams, split into three classes, that build a car that can achieve 100 miles per gallon and pass a battery of tests. The winner of the mainstream class for four-seat cars gets $5 million for reaching the target, and the two alternative classes split $5 million.
In total, 142 teams originally entered the competition, with teams dropping off or withdrawing after successive challenges to prove their designs.
Yesterday, the Alias survived acceleration and accident avoidance testing conducted by Consumer Reports that eliminated four other teams from competition. The vehicles had to accelerate from zero to 60 mph, and then brake to a stop, with sensors measuring both their acceleration and stopping abilities.
The team previously had to prove the Alias' range and handling abilities as well. However, unlike some other entrants, ZAP officials say they intend to market their design commercially, and have begun accepting reservations for the $35,000 two-seater.
"We already have people saying they want to drive the car," said Alex Campbell, a spokesman for ZAP. "Part of our thinking with the X-Prize would be that it would be a great way to launch the vehicle."

old news .. when ssta tried getting there hands on mop
PR does not move stock up, PR is forgotten in a day. What moves stock up is sellers realizing what they have in there hands and taking control of it.
What I mean is .. When you let a buyer bring you down half a penny at a time he takes control. When it is you the seller who has something he wants and you need to bring him up to where you are at .
IMO
Think of all the companies that were so excited about doing busines with BP,That will possibly not be paid and possible go broke .Glad we are not in that boat. Where we are going is the government demanding that oil regs have some kind of emergency clean up action. Insurance is always where the money is
IMO
And this is just the reason that Charles gave about being to overly concerned about working with BP .
What people may not understand is that Charles has safeguarded are money .By using a PO house ..Companies like BP have to pay in a timely fashion basically securing monies owed IMO .. May seem like a small thing, but once again Charles is looking out for all of us… Have a great night all .. Or morning if you are on the other side of the world
.. SEE YA AT THE END BLADESDREAM
"For future invoices that are net 30 days we are in the process of setting up receivables financing to accelerate the receipt of funds and gain more rapid access to working capital."
Charles is always worth the wait
Firestone Brand Tire Helps ZAP Alias Electric Car Reach Finals of Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE
Al Unser Jr. helped the ZAP Alias get a sponsorship from Firestone Tires for the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE
Two-time Indy 500 winner Al Unser Jr. is behind the wheel
BROOKLYN, Mich. (July 19, 2010) — Electric vehicle pioneer ZAP (OTC BB: ZAAP) rolled through the knockout stage of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE with its Alias automobile piloted by Al Unser Jr. and will move onto the finals July 19-29, thanks in part to the latest generation of Firestone Firehawk ultra high performance tires.
Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval - P225/50R16
The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE is a global competition that will award $10 million in prizes to teams that win a rigorous stage competition for clean, production-capable vehicles that exceed 100 MPG energy equivalent (MPGe). ZAP is among 15 cars (from 13 teams) that have survived from the original 142 competitors that entered the chase for the X PRIZE.
The ZAP Alias has progressed through the preliminary stages of the international competition at Michigan International Speedway on the all-new Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 tire – an opportunity that arose through Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO)’s relationship with legendary Indy car driver Al Unser Jr.
“As we made plans for the Automotive X PRIZE competition with Al Unser Jr. behind the wheel, he insisted that he wanted Firestone brand tires on the car,” said Gary Starr, Founder and Director of Business Development, ZAP. “Al brings a lifetime of driving experience to the ZAP team along with a wealth of auto industry contacts. He helped introduce Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations and its Firestone brand to the ZAP Alias, and the tires have been working very well for us.”
Starr and Unser worked with BATO engineers to select the appropriate tire for the competition. The Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 street tire was designed with a shallow tread depth (“skid”), while still maintaining desired tire performance. This reduced skid offers maximum traction capability (giving the tire its ultra high performance credentials); however it also lowers the tire’s mass, and thus helps to reduce rolling resistance. Low rolling resistance helps increase fuel mileage, which is key to winning the X PRIZE. Proper inflation pressure also contributes to achieving the desired rolling resistance level.
With all of these characteristics, the Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 tires helped the ZAP Alias progress through the stages of the X PRIZE competition, from the highway efficiency test 34 times around MIS, to the double lane change and the skid pad test run by Consumer Reports. Although some cars struggled with the lane change test in particular, The ZAP Alias, with Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 tires and Unser behind the wheel, conquered the accident avoidance test in just a few passes.
Watch the ZAP Alias perform these tests on YouTube and Facebook, follow the competition on Twitter, and check out the ZAP Alias Team Blog at zapalias.wordpress.com and the official X PRIZE website at progressiveautoxprize.org.

VIDEO: Zap Alias causes Korean singing/dancing ka-raziness

ZAP Alias song & dance– Click above to watch video after the jump
Move over hawt Volt dancers. Jump back Tesla dippin' rappers. It's become obvious that the Zap Alias – whose other-worldly looks might be put down to it being pulled from the seventh planet from the sun – has what it takes to really inspire an entertaining performance. That's right, the three-wheeled Progressive X-Prize competin' machine is now diamonds.
You want proof? We've got proof. The newly Jonway-joined company showed up in Korea the other day at its Samyang Optics customer (referred to more recently as its "distribution partner") with a copy of its traditional Xebra thingy, a last-gen Toyota RAV4 a new electric Zap-Jonway Taxi and the brilliant and glorious Alias. Apparently, the vehicles were to be put on display at the EV Korea expo.
Anyhoo, a passing group of fashionably attired young men with exquisite automotive taste took notice of the assemblage and after completely ignoring the dying Xebra and pausing only briefly at the taxi, locked onto the Alias with utter fascination. That's when the music kicked in and the singing and dancing began. Hit the jump to watch the Alias get rhapsodized Grease-style in Korean. If you dare.

Tags: Ashley Montgomery, Electric Cars, NASDAQ, OTCBB, TSLA, WMM NanoCap Index, World Market Media, ZAAP More than 100 years after the invention of the internal combustion engine, incumbent automobile manufacturers are at a crossroads and face significant industry-wide challenges. The reliance on the gasoline-powered internal combustion engine as the principal automobile powertrain technology has raised environmental concerns, created dependence among industrialized and developing nations on oil largely imported from foreign nations, and exposed consumers to volatile fuel price. Petroleum is a limited resource and a vexing source of price spikes, geopolitical instability, and environmental disasters of epic proportions. It currently fuels 95% of the United States transportation sector, a sector that demands nearly 28% of total energy usage. Globally, demand for personal transportation is increasing while reserves are decreasing. Not only is petroleum a diminishing resource, but it is also a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions.
Reducing the transportation sector's dependence on petroleum means increasing dependence on electricity. As transportation increases its use of the electricity grid, the demand for energy will rise. This demand can be met by bringing online increasingly efficient power plants and renewables. Many countries have committed to decreasing dependence on fossil fuels by increasing their renewable energy portfolios. The United States Federal Government has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 28% by 2020. In Europe, renewable energy should account for 20 percent of energy consumption by 2020. Germany alone has more than quadrupled the amount of renewable energy feeding its grid in less than a decade. Thus, sparking an increased interest and expansion in the field of electric vehicles.
Zap (OTCBB: ZAAP) is currently trading at $0.45, up $0.05 or 11.11%. It is one of the world’s oldest and most experienced electric vehicle providers, having delivered over 117,000 of a broad range of vehicles to more than 75 countries since 1994. It supplies electric trucks and vans to military, government and corporate fleets and is an innovator of electric motorcycles, scooters and ATVs. The Santa Rosa, California based company offers some of the only electric city-speed cars and trucks in production today and is leveraging its accrued technology know-how in developing a cost effective high-speed electric car called the ZAP Alias. It recently started pilot production for an electric taxi through a partnership in China and is developing electric charging stations with China's Holley Group, the world's largest producer of electric power meters. The Company believes the EV market niche will continue to grow rapidly, especially with the introduction of affordable vehicles such as the XEBRA that will retail for less than $11,700 and deliver features, such as speeds up to 40 mph, not currently available among existing EVs.

Cathaya Invests $11 Million in ZAP for Jonway Acquisition
SANTA ROSA, Calif., July 12, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Cathaya Capital, L.P. is investing US$11 million in ZAP /quotes/comstock/11k!zaap (ZAAP 0.53, 0.00, 0.00%) to finance the 51 percent majority interest acquisition of Zhejiang Jonway Automobile Co. Ltd. upon final closing of the transaction. The new company combines ZAP's 15 years electric vehicle experience with Jonway's ISO 9000 quality auto manufacturing capabilities to accelerate electric car production while opening new markets in China's growing auto industry.

Cathaya invested in ZAP last year with the objective of realizing this opportunity. Since then ZAP has been focused on developing electric vehicle (EV) products for the partnership with Jonway, and also in finalizing this acquisition. Cathaya Capital is a cross border fund aimed at accelerating growth opportunities in China by combining international companies with technologies or global market presence to enhance the competitive edge of high growth potential Chinese companies.
