It’s the kind of innovation that Kathleen Carroll, a psychology professor at Yale, says may be a “small revolution” in mental health care. These apps are part of the “brain fitness” industry, a category that includes computerized memory exercises and cognitive-impairment assessment programs, and that SharpBrains, a company that analyzes the industry, estimates to have grown 35 percent in 2009, to $295 million.

A new online therapy service called "Beating the Blues" will be started soon, as per the mental health contract acquired by Medtech-led conglomerate, which would cater to patients with moderate to mild depression free of cost.
A three-year contract to conduct the computerized cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) program has been won by Medtech Global, the New Zealand subsidiary of primary healthcare technology solutions provider. The contract has been awarded through a tender process. It values around $2.1 million and will be financed by the Ministry of Health and the contract managed by the Northern DHB Support Agency (NDSA).

It aims to assist employees manage their own conditions online in a very practical way using a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) model that is interactive and provided in a series of self regulated modules that the client can go over as many times as they wish, moving from one module to the next when THEY feel they are ready.

Australian General Practice Network Submission to the 2010-2011 Federal Budget.
Models of stepped care have been trialled in New Zealand and the United Kingdom (e.g. the Doncaster Model) with promising results30, 31. An Australian trial, The beyondblue Improving Access to Psychological Therapies Study, has also been started by the Northern Rivers Division of General Practice with funding from beyondblue. A UK pilot was established in Doncaster, a socially and economically disadvantaged city in northern England. The results from 4,000 patients have recently been formally reported: the combined remission and recovery rates were 76 percent for depression, 74 percent for anxiety; the mean number of treatment sessions were 5.15 in a mean time of two hours 45 minutes. On average at least three of these contacts were delivered by phone. The outcomes are comparable with benchmark trials of one-to-one therapy (usually 12-15 hours duration). However, the volume of patients seen is vastly increased (about a quarter of the time of one-to-one therapy) at much less cost (lower level trained staff). The guided self-help program is embedded within a stepped care model, so that if patients are at risk (e.g. of suicide) or inappropriate for guided self-help (e.g. have post- traumatic stress disorder) they are stepped straight up to ‘high intensity’ (one-to-one) therapy interventions.
The Doncaster Model has delivered excellent outcomes in a ‘real’ health service context. Australia is now in a good position to capitalise and build on the lessons from the UK initiative. A feasibility study for Australia has great potential to demonstrate significantly improved access, equity, choice and outcomes for Australians with high prevalence mental health disorders.
AGPN recommends funding of $1 million over two years to implement the eCBT program.

Ultrasis announces major breakthrough for
Beating the Blues in New Zealand
Ultrasis plc is pleased to announce that its Computerised Cognitive Behaviour Therapy program "Beating the Blues" has been selected for a National E-Therapy Service in New Zealand, funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Health.
The use of "Beating the Blues" was proposed by a consortium led by New Zealand's leading health technology company Medtech Global Ltd, in response to a national tender. The three-year contract, which has a total value of NZ$2.1 million (Ultrasis' share being NZ$1m), will see "Beating the Blues" made available to all GPs in New Zealand through Medtech's revolutionary "Manage My Health" patient centric eHealth technology system.
Nigel Brabbins, Ultrasis' CEO, said: "Once again, the exceptional evidence base, ease of use, superior administration system and patient data safety aspects of "Beating the Blues" have resulted in a major contract win. This demonstrates that the program remains the product of choice in leading healthcare systems looking for affordable treatment solutions. We are delighted to have made this significant breakthrough in New Zealand."
Vino Ramayah, Executive Chairman and CEO at Medtech, said: "Medtech is delighted to be working in partnership with Ultrasis to make Beating the Blues universally available in New Zealand. We look forward to building on this contract win and opening up new markets with Ultrasis in Australia, India and Asia."
John Smith, Executive Director at Ultrasis, said: "Medtech are already the preferred solution provider to over 85% of New Zealand's GP's and this, along with their proven 26-year track record of delivering health technology solutions to the New Zealand primary health sector, makes for an ideal partnership. We believe this is a model that is replicable in other GP-led healthcare systems, as it provides an immediate, evidence-based solution for mild and moderate depression to both the GP and the patient."
Sanjeewa Samaraweera, Chief Operating Officer at Medtech, said: "The combination of "Manage My Health" with the most evidence based computerised CBT program available globally, "Beating the Blues", has created an unbeatable offering and means that GPs will be able to prescribe Beating the Blues to their patients whilst they are in the clinic and it be ready for them to access immediately they get home."
Other partners in the successful consortia bid were: the New Zealand Guidelines Group and New Zealand based CBT Therapy provider, Opening Doors.

NHS stress hotline launched across England.
There is mounting concern about stress during the recession
An NHS helpline to help people struggling with stress has been launched by the government.
The service is available across England, following concerns about the mounting problems people will face in coming months because of the economy.
Trained health advisers will staff the hotline - available on 0300 123 2000 - from 0800 to 2200 each day.
They will offer advice on debt, housing and employment, but can also put people in touch with mental health services.
It is estimated that a quarter of people with mental health problems experience debt, but a third of those do not ask for any help.
Average household debt is now almost £10,000, excluding mortgages, and recent surveys suggest up to half the population is worried about money because of the recession.
Job insecurity, redundancy, debt and money problems can all cause feelings of distress and helplessness
Jacqui Jedrzejewski, of NHS Direct
Care services minister Phil Hope said: "After the festive season many of us take a long hard look at our finances.
"Tightening our belts and getting out of debt always features high on the list of new year resolutions.
"But debt can have a serious impact on a person's mental wellbeing, causing stress, depression and even suicidal thoughts."
Jacqui Jedrzejewski, the mental health lead at NHS Direct, said the advisers were there to "offer sympathetic, relevant support and advice".
She added: "We know the credit crunch hits people in many different ways and job insecurity, redundancy, debt and money problems can all cause feelings of distress and helplessness."
The launch of the stress service, after a six-month pilot, comes after the government set out a new mental health strategy earlier this month.
Paul Farmer from the mental health charity Mind explains how the helpline works
The 10-year plan involved a series of measures, including the appointment of mental health co-ordinators to work with Job Centres.
Dedicated advice lines are also to be set up for small businesses to give their staff direct access to occupational health professionals to help them stay in work, while government-backed work placements are to be piloted to help people return to work.

Defamatory bulletin board remarks.
Posters cannot hide behind anonymity
Norwich Pharmacal orders are usually obtained without objection from the third party and are now, because the courts are familiar with them, comparatively easy and inexpensive to achieve.
The poster of the defamatory allegations is no more at risk than any other defendant in defamation proceedings. They can rely on all the same defences of truth, fair comment or qualified privilege if they can argue that the matter is of public interest.
Norwich Pharmacal orders do mean however that the poster of a defamatory allegation cannot just hide behind their anonymity or attempts to disguise their true identity. Given the damage that persistent defamatory allegations can have on an organisation these orders can be a very useful tool to a company in taking action to protect its reputation from untrue allegations made against it. http://www.aimzine.co.uk/aimzine/0910/0910_A4/0910_A4.htm
