Merritt knows that the Nokia lawyers were listening for anything they could use to dispute the award to IDCC. That is why there was no Q&A session in which he could not control the questions and might make an inadvertent statement that Nokia could use. Personally, I suspect that Nokia might even have planted a questioner to try to provoke such a response. That is how little I think of Nokia. The licensing fees due to Interdigital are immaterial to Nokia, considering their market cap, according to a Nokia spokesman. Why doesn't a reporter ask them why they didn't pay them? Hello Forbes, do you understand why tiny American technology companies have to use arbitration or go to court to protect their IPR?
Eric: I know that the amount owed to Interdigital is not very significant to a company of Samsung's size and profitability. However, it is only "chump change" because Samsung is a chump not to pay for IPR that they have been using. It is stealing . I would love to see a financial reporter from the Wall Street Journal or the Financial Times describe the behavior of Samsung, Nokia, and the other high tech thieves whenever they do an article about how the Chinese steal US technology.
imalurker, The spokeswoman for Nokia showed the lack of class we expected. We got Espoo-poopoo, instead of a positive spin on an irrevocable decision which could lead to a positive working relationship. This is why Merritt is seeking the court to assure payment. Nokia lawyers will be taping tomorrow's conference call looking for a lead to take to a judge somewhere. I hope he tells them that Ollila is full of Espoo-poopoo.

rmarchma, I believe that we are undergoing a paradigm shift from a staid company with little or no recognition by the investment community to a growth company about to hit The Wall Street Journal and CNBC. Investors will be amply rewarded by stock appreciation along with management. "Tomorrow, Tomorrow, the sun will shine tomorrow. Tomorrow is another day." from Annie.
rmarchma, I disagree. IDCC has just become a growth stock investment in a dynamic and expanding market. Investment in this company has been and will remain an opportunity to greatly increase the value of the capital invested. At some future time when we need a calculator to count the licensing revenue, the question can be raised. Not now. Institutional investors understand growth opportunities when earnings visibility is demonstrated. Sorry to disagree.
Jim_Charts, Thank you for your reply, particularly using volume as a guide. I am curious about what ploys are attempted to limit the price rise. I am not on margin so I am holding despite any tactics they try.
Jim_Charts, Thanks for your valiant attempt to get this board back to the IDCC stock price and what we are all doing here.
I believe that we will sail through 28 tomorrow. I think that the shorts and new investors are prepared to pay 28 in a heart beat. I predict a long delay on the opening while the market makers scramble to find sellers. The phones at Heartland, Barclay's, Fidelity, and the other major holders will be ringing. As for the loyal members of this board, Stand fast!
sjratty, German trading. The quote you gave was at 9:07 this morning. Trading obviously stopped at that time because it is now 3:27 in the afternoon. The poor shorts will have to wait until tomorrow morning to cover.
JimLur, I support all your efforts on this board. I have had Corp on ignore and don't know or care what he says. In the interest of moving on, please add my name to your list.
wiredwest, I know. I took a beating in June and was so disappointed that I didn't buy the July's. I was only kidding.
wiredwest, No, but I have a large supply of the June 20's that I can let you have at a bargain price. LOL
Explosion in price starting on Tuesday. A strategy previously described for Institutions was to wait for the resolution of the Nokia arbitration and buy IDCC at a higher price when the future growth of Interdigital was assured and no longer a speculation. At the time, it appeared that about $20 would be a logical buying point. Now we have arrived at a logical time for them to buy. I believe that there will be a crush to buy IDCC on Tuesday. The shorts need to cover, the smart money that was watching and waiting, and the momentum traders will want to climb aboard. I don't think that any of these groups will hesitate to buy in the mid 20's and may reach up to the mid 30's. If the CC is bullish about the long term prospects of more licensees and product development, these prices are not excessive and are in fact attractive for the longer term. Many of us were happy to buy IDCC in the mid 30's and higher. Remember?
Prepare yourselves for an exciting week. JMHO
Great News! Thank you all for your contributions to this board and your support through the years. We have endured disappontment and frustration for many years. I wish the upcoming holiday was Thanksgiving because we are like the Pilgrims after a long and bitter winter. Let's celebrate July 4th as our day of independence from our would be oppressor and his allies. Paris helped us as well in 1776. ( corny, I know)
This is a great day for us and our families.
georgebailey, If you are correct, there will be no trading today. Nokia and IDCC will have until Tuesday to either resolve their differences or come up with some statement that they are in licensing discussions. They might even need to use all the time available until 31 August. The only question for IDCC stockholders will be how bullish or neutral the announcement will be either later today or Tuesday before the open. Of course, Nokia will insist on a statement that is neutral. IDCC needs to sound like the winner to get Samsung, MOT and the other deadbeats signed. JMHO
Inspector Clouzot has been sent to King of Prussia to investigate the delay in the announcement of the ICC announcement. Paris is upset that there is no publicity after all of their hard work. He arrived at the Post Office in King of Prussia at 9:30 AM but could not find the Interdigital offices. Using all of his detecting skills, he crossed the parking lot and Voila, there they were. By the time he arrived, it was time for lunch so he left in search of the only French restaurant he knew called MacDonald's. He will report in as soon as he finishes a large order of pommes frites.
Don't worry, he will get to the bottom of the delay.
Librium, Valium, Tylenol, and vodka. Now,I feel better
Tell Janet to write faster.
Inspector Clouzot took the smelly envelope containing the ICC report, recovered from the Paris sewer which he had partially burnt, and rushed from his hospital bed to the Bureau de Poste. He put on extra stamps, just to be sure, and mailed it to King of Prussia, Germany. He is now on the trail of the mysterious "Jorma" who may be a Finnish transvestite. Don't be concerned fellow investors, we are in the capable hands of the ICC.
The President of the ICC tripped on his way to his Bureau and dropped the Interdigital file in to the Paris sewer. Inspector Clouzot, the top investigator in his department found it but unfortunately ignited it while lighting a Gauloise cigarette. He is suffering only minor burns and is estimated that he will return to duty on 30 June, unless he has another accident. The file is barely legible and it is not clear whether the amount in question is in old francs, new francs or Euros. Inspector Clouzot is convinced that a mysterious woman with the code name "Jorma" is behind it. Rest assured that every effort is being made to bring this affair to a rapid and equitable solution.
Potential Problem: If the ICC delays informing Nokia and IDCC about their decision, there is the possibility that no announcement is made in the USA until Friday afternoon or after the market closes. Many Wall St.people will leave early on Friday for the long July 4th holiday. European Markets will be open on Monday while the US markets are closed. If Interdigital wins more than $200 million, traders who are short IDCC will not be able to cover unless they buy in Frankfurt. If there is disappointment in the award, traders will want to sell. How many people know how to do that? Even if IDCC chose to delay an announcement until early Tuesday morning, for the best of reasons, Nokia could announce on Monday and cause havoc.
I would be interested to know the opinion of our Wall Street experts on the likelihood of this happening. Does the ICC know all this or care? TIA
In Paris it is 6:00 PM and time to sit in a cafe on the Champs Elysees with a dark eyed beauty hoping that she will not transmit anything to you by 30 June. Meanwhile, in Finland Jorma is drinking vodka, not sure if the 29th has ended or the 30th begun. On Wall Street, the momentum investors are watching GOOG and oblivious to the opportunity in IDCC in less than 4 hours of trading time. Hoping to LOL.
Jim_Charts, Transmitted is ambiguous but it could mean Fax or Email because it did not say delivered, which implies mail to me. If it is coming by carrier pigeon, we know a decision has been made and is in route.
I have stopped worrying about the drop in the price of IDCC just before the Arbitration decision. I believe that the sellers are clueless and simply sell when the major averages decline. They don't know anymore than you or I. They similarly buy IDCC when the major averages rise.
I had become paranoid over the price declines. I also agree that smart money can afford to wait for a positive decision before buying IDCC. There will still be plenty of profit to be gained. We have been early. ( years early)
Are you thinking about the speculators who have sold IDCC short at $17.07 and above? It is likely that trading will be stopped while the announcement of a major award to IDCC is made this week. When trading is resumed there could be an initial jump to $22 or more. If the frustrated long term holders hold on and don't sell, IDCC could go significantly higher. Think of them as Nokia stooges who have been depressing the stock and us. Therefore, my advice is hold tight and don't let them off the hook.
j70k, I wish it were so but I doubt it. The ICC secretary will type it on Monday and send it late Monday or Tuesday. It will arrive by Thursday as promised. If no announcement on Friday, July 1, we may not hear until Thursday July 7. The option holders are holding their breath.
IDoCare: Enter a dash before the option symbol. -DAQGD.
Good luck.
Learning2vest, I hope you are right but I have 2 small problems. (1) It is close to 11:00 PM in Finland. Jorma is either dead drunk or dead asleep. (2) who initiates the telephone call? Is it the great egotist or the fledgeling president. ( It makes me think of Kruschev and JFK.)
Maybe, the brilliant legal team at Nokia monitoring this board will call him saying that they just had a brilliant idea. On the other hand the German High command had orders not to wake Der Fuehrer on D-Day.
$.30 for June 20 options. The option seller is so sure that there will not be a favorable resolution for IDCC by July 15 that he is practically giving the options away. I can't believe it. However, I confess that I haven't got the guts to buy them. Do you?
Vote NO to the 2005 stock option plan. I invite Jett and Roland L Violette to join us in voting NO. There will plenty of opportunities to reward management after demonstrable commercial success. I monitor this board but haven't had anything useful to say until now.
In Paris, it is now 5 PM. The governing board has made its decision. Now, we wait for them to inform the two parties and the announcements. The drop in price of IDCC on low volume says to me that speculators are afraid to jump in and buy. The tension is almost unbearable for investors. The word that you don't often hear on Wall Street is courage. Have courage!
beattheclockmn, I bought a ton of the June's. I thought it was a sure thing. It was a humbling experience. I just can't do it again in July. Good luck!
ICC will transmit its decision by June 30. They meet on the last Friday of the month. Tomorrow, they will meet to make the final decision on the award and notify the parties by next Thursday, June 30. The people selling today at $17.70 on low volume are throwing in the towel. All you long term investors just have to hold on for a week. LOL
Learning2vest, How much money is involved in a Lucent license from Tantivy (Interdigital)? Is it worth all the legal fees?
Here we have major corporations, Nokia, Samsung, Lucent refusing to pay for licensing technology that they need. Why is there all the furor in Congress about the Chinese abusing American IPR when these companies are doing it?
Luckyk57, Why did Bernstein leave BTG? (a) He lives near King of Prussia and didn't like the commute to Conshohocken. (b)He has followed the Interdigital IPR and believes they will be a growth company based on 3G. (c) Interdigital has a better health and retirement plan than BTG. (d) BTG no longer has a bright future.
Who wants to be a millionaire?
Dave Davis, What in the Sam Hill is Sam Sung saying to Bill Merritt about a 3G license? (a) They already have one and just need to agree on the rate ( just like Nokia). (b) They don't need one because all the patents are invalid. (c) they don't need one because they will not use Interdigital IPR (d)Let's submit the question to arbitration.
Who wants to be a millionaire? pick the right answer and it could be you.
Dear Mr. Thanksformusic:
We at Toyota are very preased that you are royal customer. We have the largest market share of autos in the world because we have the best technology at a fair price. Our chairman recently told a stockholder at our annual meeting that anyone who buys our cars must pay for them. The purchase of a Toyota without payment is not acceptable. We have a war chest filled with yen to seek payment in the courts in the USA. ( Courts in Japan take too long to decide anything.)
If your stupid American rawyer is reading this as a threat, we are only fooring. ROR
Sincerery yours.
Toyota, Inc.
Win-Win Nokia style. You fall on your sword and Nokia agrees to collect your insurance money and guarantee to pay it out at a rate to be negotiated at a future date. Your widow and the Wall Street experts believe that is an excellent deal because Nokia is a major international corporation with excellent finances. Furthermore, Mr. Jorma Ollila, their president is a well respected leader who is well known by the financial community. What could possibly go wrong?
Unconditional Surrender. Nothing less. Stop all this talk of settlement! I want to see dollars flowing in the streets of Espoo. We have suffered too long at the hands of these barbarians from the North. We are winning the war on techno-terrorism. Fight on fellow countrymen until the final victory!
laranger, I thought you were going to suggest to F&J that they tell the judge that Nokia has a history of infringing the IPR of others, particularly smaller companies and individuals. Maybe Forbes would be interested in writing an article about it.
