Silicon Investor Knows The Way To Go

Oh, and this'll probably make me really popular considering the thread I'm on.... <g>
One of the cooler things about the changeover is that instead of the 8 or 9 or however many SUNW machines we were running for the old site, this one's running on exactly 2 machines and those machines are just sitting there idling, despite dealing with quite a bit of traffic.

XScale Win: Intel, Alibaba Build First Mobile Commerce Platform in China
http://tinyurl.com/4gpt2
US chip company Intel has teamed up with Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba to build the first mobile commerce platform in China.
As a part of the agreement, Intel will embed mobile modules in its XScale-architecture-based mobile phone chips and supply it to phone makers, so that phone users can trade on the online Alibaba platform. The first batch of the new handsets will be released by Motorola and Chinese phone maker Dopoda.
I think not only is this good for XScale, This is good partnering. Intel should do more of this type of thing.
Philips Warns on Sales, Sees 05 Slowdown
http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/040924/tech_philips_5.html
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Europe's top consumer electronics group Philips (Amsterdam:PHG.AS - News) cut the sales forecast for its closely-watched chip unit on Friday and predicted much smaller growth for the semiconductor industry next year.
Pointing to a snag in an industry-wide recovery, Philips said third-quarter sales at its chip unit would be flat from the previous quarter in dollar terms, or up 27 percent year-on-year. It had previously expected single-digit growth for the third quarter compared with the second.

Intel to cut Dothan CPU prices on October 17, may postpone Sonoma to 2Q 2005
http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20040923A1001.html
Intel plans to cut prices for its Dothan-based 400MHz FSB Pentium M lineup on October 17, which should help boost notebook shipments from Taiwan makers 20-30% sequentially in the fourth quarter, according to sources at the makers.
Although Intel informed Taiwan makers that it will launch the Dothan-based 533MHz FSB Pentium M CPUs and the Alviso chipsets in the first quarter of next year, the October price cuts may yet again delay the launch of its Sonoma platform until the second quarter of next year, the sources said.
Itanium 2 shipments to exceed 100,000 units in 2004

Citing data released by International Data Corporation (IDC), Skaugen said Itanium 2 shipments are expected to surpass shipments of the processors used in Hewlett-Packard (HP) PA-RISC servers in 2005, those used in IBM Power-series servers in 2006, and those used in Sun Microsystems Sparc servers in 2007.

Gee, These guys who wrote and published this article, must not have been reading the other thread. According to some on that thread, The whole entire Sparc world is about to migrate to Opteron, not intel.
Or maybe intel's secret Black Shirts paid these guys to write the story.
Or maybe intel is "giving it away for free", in Austrailia now.
Or maybe intel "strong armed" The entire Austrailian continent.

AMD/IBM 65nm To Be Late?
Thanks to Alan.....

contains this interesting line:
Additionally, the parties agreed to extend the target dates for
achievement of certain development milestones.
[alan]Since this is the amendment for future process development agreements, I assume this extension is for 65nm, and is enough that they need to call it out in the contracts.
I assume AMD used slippage in the 65nm development as leverage in these negotiations.

SEMI's book-to-bill falls amid lull for equipment
http://www.eet.com/semi/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleId=47212309&kc=2515
"Semiconductor equipment bookings and billings for North American-based suppliers have declined slightly from peak levels in the past few months, yet remain at high levels," said Lubab Sheet, research development director at SEMI, in a statement. "A number of recent company announcements suggest these levels may continue to soften in the coming months. However, we believe the industry is on track to exceed our overall worldwide forecast projection of $36 billion this year."
Can you recommend me a good digicam?
No
SemiconEng - you should update your info. The source turned out to actually be Taiwan mobo makers, who told Digitimes these things. They also gave numbers like 5 mio K8 in 2Q04 in the past. Maybe you can put this 600k number together with another one from Taiwan mobo makers, published by Digitimes: 5% of mobos in 1H04 were K8 mobos. Either there were millions of Opterons or (assuming 2*500k K8 for Q1 and Q2) the worldwide CPU market shrunk to 12-15 mio x86 CPUs per quarter.

More B.S.
Hey, no, wait a minute. You and Hector must right, and all those 13 other semiconductor companies must be wrong. How could anybody not see that? Forget about all that lowering Q3 guidance data from all those other companies in the same industry, and pay no attention to that man behind the curtain, The Great Wizard Hector Of AMD has spoken!
Whew, I'm glad that we got that all straightened out, thanks for clearing it up.
SemiconEng - You could surely be right, if all these 13 companies would have a homogenous product portfolio. But it is not, and AMD's product portfolio is not static (model and volume wise).

That's All?
http://www.overclockers.com/articles1107/
Digitimes had an article yesterday from AMD Taiwan saying that Athlon 64 sales are "better than expected" at that they expect to ship 600,000 of them this quarter.
That's all???
A figure of 600K Athlon 64s is far below any estimates or projections that AMD has previously made for the chip, roughly half the previous lowest estimates, and about a tenth of what AMD was promising a year ago.
But hey...... There's no issue with AMD's Q3, eh? Must be all those people reporting lowered guidance that are "delusional". Good thing for AMD :-P (btw DDB, that was sarcasm).
Woops I was wrong.....

INSIDE THE NEW CHINA. How Intel Got Inside
http://www.fortune.com/fortune/technology/articles/0,15114,698541,00.html
The American chip giant's hunger for a huge new marketplace has driven it deep into China. Intel's biggest fear? That China will one day produce a chip that rivals its own.
It was a bitterly cold December weekend, with the kind of frigid wind that would keep most sensible people indoors. But 33-year-old Jason Chen was going to throw his party anyway. He had rented a large room at the Beijing Library, a 15-minute cab ride west of Tiananmen Square, and had carefully arranged row upon row of personal computers for inspection by his guests.
The moment Chen threw open the doors on that morning in 1995, he understood that Intel's business in China was going to be a hit. There, in front of him, thousands were waiting patiently in line, and over the course of the weekend 45,000 people—enough to fill a baseball stadium—attended Chen's party.....

IC Momentum Fades in Q3, IC Insights Confirms
http://www.reed-electronics.com/semiconductor/article/CA454029?spacedesc=news
Due to typical quarterly patterns in the semiconductor industry, year-over-year comparisons are not the only indicator of the health of the market, according to IC Insights. The firm this week reported that current momentum in the semiconductor market is best observed by comparing the first month of Q3 with the first month of Q2 -- in this case comparing July with April.
On a year/year comparison of dollar volume, three categories showed more than 50 percent increases in July: special purpose Logic/MPRs, DRAM and Display Drivers with the MPU segment the only category to report a year-over-year decline.
Ummmmm.... they must probably mean, "Except for AMD", which I keep hearing, is not affected :-P
Intel Outside

How Intel could deliver dual core chip prototypes
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=18545
This probably is technically possible, now. It would have been a PITA when packing was using wire bond, because all the Pads would need to be arranged along the outside edge of the die, but with the implementation of the flip chip bump process, the pads can be located anywhere on the die that there is room. intel could then use a multilayer package to connect everything together. I think it's easier to make a new package, then a new chip stepping, not to mention IMO that it does qualify as "2 Cores on 1 piece of silicon".
And why stop at Quad?
I think Barrett was/is totally inadequate in a CEO role. He seems better as a COO, VP of Manuf. type, but not one that insprires creativity, clear vision.
I'm curious. What do employees within Intel think of Barrett, senior mgt. lately?
Joey
I don't know of anyone who will be crying in their beer when Craig retires.
Despite recent missteps, I hear morale at the company remains high. To use a sports analogy, The team believes they have great players, but isn't winning the games they should. So, there does seem to be a growing feeling, that a Coaching change is needed, in order to refocus the Team. It's sort of like a sports team that has great players, If you've got great players, and you're not winning, then maybe it's the coaching. On the other hand, there's No Doubt, the players need to realize the need to play harder too.
While it is generally agreed, that what Craig said about intel's execution the past few quarters is correct, it was the way the message was delivered that probably generated an issue. With intel's recent missteps, as in most SNAFU's, there is PLENTY of blame to go around, for everybody. Now, I didn't see the actual memo that was sent out, but from published accounts, I have to admit that I did not read about Craig initially taking any personal, or Management responsability for the situation.
Maybe it's just my perception, but the impression I first got on the web, was the Message Craig delivered, was that Manufacturing F-Up. That might not be a wise message to deliver, when manufacturing makes up a large portion of your company. To be fair, I also heard that Craig did come out with that sort of "We're all at fault" message....... afterwards, but it probably would have been better if he had said it that way to begin with. Some credability was probaby lost there.
Like I said, No Beer Crying that I see
I would be a lot happier if Intel ignored pie-in-the-sky
for a while and focussed on getting its bread and butter
operations back to running smoothly and comm chips

True, intel needs to get executing on their MPU Roadmap..... FOR SURE. Although...... on the other hand, I can't help thinking, that if it wasn't for their desire to investigate emerging technologies, intel might still be a DRAM manufacturer. So, while I heartily agree with your point, I think also, that intel capital, who's task it is, to find and support emerging technologies, needs to execute to their roadmap too

MKS Instruments Lowers Forecast
http://www.reed-electronics.com/semiconductor/article/CA453839?spacedesc=news
MKS Instruments has followed the lead of its customer semiconductor companies by cutting its guidance for Q3.
The company said sales for Q3 are expected to be below previous guidance that had called for flat sequential growth. That's because orders have been lower and some delivery requests and orders have been stretched out, the Wilmington, Mass.-based company said in a statement.
"We believe this recent softening in order rates reflects our customers' relatively flat near term outlook, which requires no further increase in pipeline inventory and therefore has reduced demand for our products to a level more closely aligned to our customers' production rates," he said. "Although our visibility is limited, we currently anticipate that fourth quarter revenues could be essentially flat and in line with our customers' outlook. We remain focused on managing our costs and executing our strategies for increased profitability at all sales levels."

Xilinx lowers guidance as inventories build
http://www.eet.com/semi/news/showArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=E4RQE1XAHFT44QSNDBGCKHQ?articleId=47205260....
MANHASSET, N.Y. — Xilinx Inc. (San Jose) said Tuesday (Sept. 14) it expects revenue for the first fiscal 2005 quarter ending September to be down 5 to 7 percent sequentially, compared to the original guidance of 2 to 4 percent higher revenue.
The 11th Semiconductor Company I've seen do so for Q3...... But hey, no worries, because I'm told that AMD is not affected. It's an intel only thing. All I know is, that when 11 companies say one thing, and 1 company says something else, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see who's telling the truth, and who's lying. Unless a person doesn't want to see, of course.
But clearly it's possible for a small player like AMD to gain significant marketshare and grow revenues and profits, even in a slowing or shrinking market. That's what Dell did throughout the post-bubble downturn. For AMD, I guess, Droids are arguing that its marketshare gains could more than offset the effects of the slowdown. I think that's logical. (It may not actually come to pass, but it's not crazy.)
I agree, that would be true if, the illusion were true that AMD is a small player. They're not. You must be thinking of Transmeta. And anyway, Jerry Sanders tried that "Volume is our vaccine to grow market share", theory out already, it didn't work. Besides, comparing AMD to Dell is irrelevant, Semiconductors are not computers, and Hector RuiN is no Michael Dell. I think the Droid theory is only logical if viwed through "I Love AMD" glasses, who's lens color I don't think I need to note. You'll see.
Why do you think Hector is spinning positively, if he expects to miss? It seems like a dumb thing to do. Why not just join the flood of warnings, and blame the economy?
Because he learned his AMD indoctrination at the feet of "Spit On Intel" Jerry Sanders, that's why. Even in the text I presented, Hector says Q3 is loaded monthly JULY August/September as 20%/20%/60%. He has already indicated that July and August was not up to expectations, and he's hoping for September to save his sorry ass predictions, while other Semiconductor companies apparently have CEO's with smaller Ego's
And it's not dunb for him to do, he's got nothing to lose. If what Hector is "hoping for" doesn't come to pass, he can always blame intel, since that seems to be a well established pattern pattern of AMD/Hector RuiN, corporate policy.
Isn't the issue more about what the market's expectations are for AMD relative to INTC and the rest of the industry?
*** Right, and what I showed is that a good majority of important players in "the rest of the industry", are reporting indications of an unexpected Q3 slowdown. Not AMD. What Hector RuiN has led analyists to believe about AMD, is "Normal Seasonal Trends", which is quite different then what "the rest of the industry" seems to be saying. "Normal Seasonal Trends", my foot. Most of the other players are not seeing "Normal Seasonal Trends", and only an idiot would believe what Ruiz is saying. Well, I take that back, maybe some Droids believe it too. (same thing)
IMO, the point of view seeming to be expressed elsewhere, that AMD somehow operates in some sort of vacuum, by themselves, apart from the industry, is very amusing. FYI, they don't. So, my answer to your question is yes...... I think the market will react, based on AMD relative to intel, and on AMD relative to the the Semiconductor Market, and more importantly based on what Hector has communicated about AMD. "Normal Seasonal Trends" gives the impression that everything is fine and dandy at AMD, and I believe it's not. IMO, Those that believe what RuiN is spinning, are in for a rude awakening.

MPU BUSINESS EXPERIENCING NORMAL SEASONAL TRENDS; LONG-TERM
ROADMAP APPEARS STRONG, THOUGH NEAR-TERM RISK FROM INTEL'S
INVENTORY REMAINS
AMD is currently experiencing normal seasonal trends in its microprocessor business, accounting
for about half the company's sales......... However, AMD indicated the third quarter is typically back-end
loaded, with a 20-20-60% profile, given slow July sales in North America and slow August sales in
Europe.
AMD's forecasts from PC customers for the quarter have not changed materially since it gave
guidance; however these forecasts don't turn into orders until 2 weeks prior to shipment, thus
visibility on 60% of the quarter is still minimal.
**********************************************************
What are the analysts expecting? $0.14
What do you think, Semi? Will they hit that?
*** I don't know what analyists are expecting, but if their expectation is $0.14, then no, I don't think AMD will hit it.

No fast 90nm Hammers in sight
http://www.overclockers.com/tips00659/
XBit Labs has an article referring to this AMDZone forum post which displays CPU-Z ID for FX-55 and Athlon 64 4000+ CPUs. The FX-55 will run at 2.6GHz, but will be made with 130nm technology. The Athlon 4000+ is simply a renamed FX-53, with 1Mb cache running at 2.4GHz.
As we've mentioned several times in the past, AMD wouldn't be doing such things if everything was okey-dokey with their 90nm process. They would be releasing such chips as 90nm CPUs.
It's not that AMD can't make 90nm chips, they're apparently beginning to be shipped. However, it doesn't look like they can make them fast. That's looks to be the secret. If you look at the AMD roadmaps, we're not supposed to see what will have to be fast 90nm chips until Q2 2005.
"Going Separate Ways?"
http://www.overclockers.com/articles1102/
One need not believe that Intel's deemphasis on speed is solely due to Mr. Otellini's persuasive brilliance. Prescott's heat problems no doubt was a big ally in persuading others at Intel that the old way wasn't going to work anymore.
But that was then, this is now. This is the guy who's going to be running the company, so for him, it's not just a matter of making lemonade out of lemons. He believes this is the right way to go.
And he's going to run the show.
