Telstra Joins Asian Wi-Fi Broadband Alliance
Mar 21, 2003 (Internet.com via COMTEX) -- Telstra is becoming part of an Asian wireless broadband alliance, which now includes five major telcos in Asia.
The members of the wireless broadband alliance, include Korea Telecom, China Netcom, Malaysia's Maxis Communications Berhad and Singapore's StarHub.
The Wi-Fi alliance will provide "hotspot" connections at international airports, hotels and business hubs, where business travelers can wirelessly connect to the Internet through ports throughout Asia.
The partners are said to be working on a pilot project to test interoperability of Wi-Fi roaming throughout Asia. Telstra expects the number of hotspots to grow from over 8,000 to 20,000 locations by the end of 2003. Wi-Fi customers are expected to have access to hotspots in seventeen international airports, food franchises throughout the region, and other branded establishments.
The partners in the venture are expected to create an alliance brand for Wi-Fi wireless broadband in Asia, following trials and product development. It is still unclear when there will be a product launch, and the financial arrangements between the five Asia telcos.
The alliance partners say they are trying to simplify roaming and billing for business travelers in Asia. The partners said they will try to utilize much of existing roaming phone bill infrastructure currently in operation for mobile phones. The billing structure of the Wi-Fi service in Asia is expected to include flat fee for access, and then different local rates, depending on which country they are in, and then only one bill will go the customer.
There are questions whether the Wi-Fi service will be complimentary or competitive with the development of third generation (3G) mobile phone services. Many 3G vendors are expected to market wireless Internet service accessed by phones, rather than laptops or PDAs.
It is still unclear whether each telco will have its own subscription service, or if it will be possible to pay by credit card for time spent online at a roaming location.
Korea Telecom already has close to 1.8 million wireless Internet users and 8,300 hotspots throughout South Korea. It expects to have 18,400 hotspots in South Korea before the end of 2003.

Nokia Makes Plans to Jump into US Market with New Selection of Mobile
Mar 23, 2003 (Sunday Business - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- Nokia launched a new range of mobile phones last week designed to take the US market by storm. But the Finnish mobile giant has big hurdles to jump.
The US differs from Europe in several key respects: free or very cheap local fixed-line calls in the US make consumers reluctant to switch to mobile phone; the industry initially made the mistake of charging users for incoming calls on their mobile phones; and widespread personal computer ownership made e-mail so pervasive that text-messaging, nicknamed "the poor-man's e-mail" in Europe, never really took off in the US.
Nokia's biggest hurdle is the fact that the US uses four incompatible digital networks as opposed to Europe's single GSM network, meaning that Nokia's European handsets have to be drastically modified for the US. The fastest growing of the US's digital networks, CDMA, is where Nokia is weakest.
Although Nokia sells 38 percent of the world's mobile phones, its strength is in the other networks, particularly the pan-European GSM standard. Some of Nokia's new CDMA phones unveiled in New Orleans last week resemble the company's European GSM phones while others have flip-open cover design favoured by rival manufacturers.
The company is confident the new range is strong enough to grow its CDMA market share from 10 percent-15 percent by the end of 2003.
But Nomura telecoms equipment analyst Richard Windsor believes Nokia's forecast may be over-optimistic. He believes Nokia made a fundamental strategic error by deciding to make its own chipsets for the latest generation of CDMA, rather than opting for Qualcomm chipsets, the industry standard, which may make handsets bulkier.
Rival handset maker Samsung stole much of Nokia's thunder in the US last week by announcing plans to use Qualcomm's latest chipsets to produce handsets capable of roaming between the previously conflicting US CDMA network and Europe's GSM network, which also operates in some US regions.
How it overcomes the hurdles of the US market will be crucial to Nokia's long-term future. The world's richest consumer market, the US, lags behind Europe in mobile phone usage by several years.

Redline Announces Distribution Agreement For Chinese And South East Asian
TORONTO, ONTARIO, Mar 25, 2003 (CCNMatthews via COMTEX) -- "Master" Distribution And OEM Deal Worth An Expected $33-Million (US)
Redline Communications Inc., an innovative provider of next-generation broadband fixed wireless equipment, today announced it has signed a distribution and OEM deal with China's Shanghai Datang Mobile Communications Equipment (SDTM).
Under terms of the non-exclusive agreement, Datang will become a master distributor of Redline's point-to-point and upcoming point-to-multipoint broadband wireless systems for China and member countries of the Association of South East Asia Nations (ASEAN). Datang will also OEM Redline's award-winning AN-50 product and add it to their Airexpress line of fixed wireless systems.
"We're excited about this partnership, as Datang thoroughly understands the cellular, mobility and ISP markets," said Kevin Suitor, Redline's Vice President of Business Development. "Point-to-point and point-to-multipoint WWAN connections are essential elements in Datang's solution portfolio. Both companies are extremely focused on meeting the needs of service providers and enterprise customers in the fastest-growing broadband market in the world."
According to industry analysts at Strategy Analytics, 8.4 million Chinese households will have broadband services in 2003 and by 2008, the market will grow by more than fourfold to 36.7 million households in China(1).
"The Chinese government is determined to position China as a world leader in broadband adoption," said Nick Griffiths in a Strategy Analytics press release. "While the rural population is unlikely to benefit, there are signs that broadband connections will soon become the norm for the urban community."
The three-year Redline-Datang contract is expected to be worth $33-million (US).
"We chose Redline because their high-bandwidth, non-line-of-sight technology will allow our customers to successfully deploy wireless in suburban markets with multipath," said Qiu Xiang Dong, SDTM's Vice President. "We're very impressed by the product's effective delivery of high-speed data, voice and video for a diverse customer base, including ISPs, enterprises and mobility operators. The reflective and diffractive non-line-of-sight conditions in Beijing and other dense urban environments are easily handled by the AN-50."
He added SDTM will hold AN-50 systems in inventory for value-added reseller and systems integrator channels.
Redline's Access Node 50 (AN-50) is a non-line-of-sight, fixed wireless system utilizing advanced orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology. Redline's distinctive OFDM approach - along with other advanced wireless features implemented in the system - helps to overcome the many performance limitations plaguing current first-generation equipment as well as second-generation platforms using alternative technologies. The AN-50 functions at up to 72 Mbps over the air and operates in the license-exempt band of 5.8 GHz, supporting ranges beyond 50 miles.

Sharp, Nokia and Sony Ericsson to Launch new Camera-phones as part of
STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Mar 21, 2003 (PRIMEZONE via COMTEX) -- Vodafone (NYSE:VOD): Vodafone live! has been a great success on the Swedish mobile telephone market since its introduction in December last year. And it will become even hotter this spring when the Sharp GX10i and Nokia 3650 camera-phones are launched. By this summer, Vodafone Sweden also hopes to be able to offer the Sony Ericsson T610 as part of Vodafone live!
"Our high pre-launch expectations have been matched by Swedish sales of Vodafone live! That's why we're looking forward to an exciting spring. We will be improving and enhancing the concept even further, with both new camera-phones and new services," said Goran Mannerstrale, Director of Consumer Affairs at Vodafone Sweden.
Three new camera-phones
Two new camera-phones are ready to be introduced this spring, the Sharp GX10i and the Nokia 3650. Vodafone Sweden is also pursuing discussions with Sony Ericsson(Nasdaq:ERICY) about offering its T610 phone as part of Vodafone live! this summer.
"We are delighted to be able to offer the two camera-phones from Nokia (NYSE:NOK) and Sharp and we look forward to bringing Sony Ericsson onboard as well. The Sharp handset has been an enormous success in the countries where we have introduced the concept, and it recently won first prize as the best mobile phone at the GSM World Congress in Cannes. The Nokia 3650 is a snazzy little phone that we also feel is ideally suited to our target group," said Goran Mannerstrale.
New services -- instant messaging and photo album The Panasonic GD87 and Nokia 7650 are already included in the concept. In addition to taking pictures, the Nokia 3650 also offers the possibility of recording video messages. Vodafone Sweden is therefore currently testing its networks to make it possible to send video MMS, which are messages with moving pictures.
"The interest in picture messages has been strong ever since they were introduced, and now it will be even stronger, since operators will be able to offer MMS between their networks, something that will become a reality in the very near future. Video MMS is something we really believe in, since the function further enhances both the pleasures and the benefits derived from communicating in pictures," said Mannerstrale.
Instant messaging is another new option Vodafone Sweden hopes to offer in the near future as part of Vodafone live! This service allows you to see when your friends are connected to the mobile network and start a chat session with them or send them other types of messages. The service is currently very popular on the Internet.
Another service to be offered is the photo album. Users can save their personal pictures in the album and show them to their friends. This services also lets you pre-select which friends will be allowed to see the pictures.
New content providers in the concept will also be coming out this spring with new services, such as stock market reports and Java games.
The concept
Use Vodafone live! to take pictures, send and receive colour images with sound and text, send games, send e-mail, download polyphonic signals, get the latest news, retrieve information and colour pictures about sports and weather, and find the best restaurants and the latest movies. And of course you can also take and make calls.
The concept is sold as a package that includes a camera-phone that is pre-programmed for all services and ready to use as soon as you leave the store. The services are then easily accessed from your mobile phone via Vodafone live!'s own user interface.
When you buy one of the mobile phones included in Vodafone live! and a new subscription or prepaid card from Vodafone Sweden, you automatically get access to all the services included in Vodafone live! The same applies if you already have a Vodafone prepaid card or subscription. All you need to do is supplement it with one of the camera-phones to be able to take advantage of all the services in Vodafone live!
Press shots of the upcoming Vodafone live! handsets, Sharp GX10i and Nokia 3650, can be retrieved from: http://www.vodafone.se/pressbilder

EDGE Belongs to GSM in 2003 GSM Operators and Vendors on Target with
NEW ORLEANS, Mar 18, 2003 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- GSM operators and vendors at the EDGE Operators' Forum (EOF) in New Orleans on March 17 provided timely advice regarding the progress of EDGE and its current commercialization to an important audience of rural, regional, and international operators representing the Americas, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East.
Key points presented:
-- Deployment: EDGE is here and ready for the market. EDGE will be
deployed by fourteen operators representing over 84 million subscribers
in nine countries throughout the Americas, with the first commercial
launches beginning the 2nd half of 2003. A growing number of operators
in Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe have been actively
evaluating EDGE as a complementary deployment with UMTS. One vendor
reports over fifteen trials currently underway.
-- Market readiness: GSM operators are already seeing the uptake of
messaging, a good precursor to high-speed wireless data services.
Worldwide, there were an estimated 430 billion mobile messages sent in
2002 with GSM operators accounting for the largest market share.
-- Spectral efficiency: EDGE is the most spectrally efficient 3G radio
access technology up to 100 Kbps while UMTS offers the best spectral
efficiency for data rates higher than 100 Kbps, thus provide a fully
complementary network plan. EDGE may be deployed within an operator's
existing spectrum and does not require a new 3G license.
-- Terminals: All EDGE devices will support GSM/GPRS and work on multiple
spectrum bands including variations of 800/900/1800/1900 MHz. The cost
of including EDGE capabilities within a device is considered negligible
and industry consensus is that EDGE will be a standard feature in all
new GPRS terminals from the end of 2003. Multiple vendors have already
made commercial announcements regarding devices and PC-cards.
-- Infrastructure: There are hundreds of thousands of EDGE-capable GSM
base stations being deployed today, that require relatively simple
software and hardware upgrades and thereby provide the lowest total
lifetime cost of network ownership for operators. Vendors providing
infrastructure include Alcatel, Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel
Networks, and Siemens.
-- Cost to upgrade: Practical experience shows that the cost to upgrade
to EDGE from GSM/GPRS is about $1-$2 per POP, in addition delivering
three times the data capacity.
-- Global availability: EDGE will be globally available for operators by
2H 2003 in all primary spectrum bands with commitments in place by
terminal and infrastructure vendors.
Chris Pearson, Executive Vice President of 3G Americas, remarked to press and analysts at an EDGE Operators' Forum briefing during CTIA, "Today, we are showcasing the outstanding progress of EDGE: from AT&T Wireless becoming the first operator to announce deployment of EDGE in 2000, followed by Rogers, Cingular, T-Mobile, Telcel, and another nine operators in the Americas to date; AT&T Wireless completing the first EDGE call with multiple vendors in 2001; the massive amounts of infrastructure shipped by multiple vendors since 2002; operators nearing completion of their EDGE network upgrades; the announcements of commercial EDGE devices by multiple vendors; to the commercial deployments of EDGE expected in the second half of 2003."
Alan Hadden, President of the GSA, commented, "We have indicated that EDGE is not just an Americas' technology and confirm that EDGE is being deployed on a global basis in all major continents." He continued, "Operators with commitments to EDGE represent about 100 million subscribers. They have the advantages of both the economies of scale with GSM/GPRS and the interoperability of EDGE with UMTS (WCDMA) that will be assured through the standards work of the 3GPP. This translates into a world of 3G services for GSM customers."
In the past year, GSM has become the fastest growing wireless technology in the Americas, registering a 53% growth from year-end 2001 to year-end 2002, according to the EMC World Cellular Database. Latin America has seen numerous new GSM deployments; in Brazil, a total of 1.7 million new subscribers were added from June 2002 to the end of the year with over 69% of customers choosing the GSM technology (23% selected TDMA and 8% choose CDMA).
Worldwide, EMC reports that GSM carriers added some 165 million new subscribers in 2002, over 30 million more than the total number of current CDMA subscribers of about 133 million.

The cost
