The Wicker Man - cult psychological horror classic (dated) - was on TV tonight.
One of the most horrifying endings and eerie movies I'd seen - but that was when it took me by surprise some years ago. Tonight, I was surprised to find how much I'd forgotten. One awfully sexy scene, to me, probably not for a guy.
You guys were talking about scary movies the other day, so...... this is an off the beaten path, weirdo 'not for everyone' movie. Surprise, surprise.
Raz, this is a gorgeous review.
For another period piece, see Far From Heaven. It's no Ice Storm or Sweet Hereafter (few things are) but it's very good. Real nice feel. Great cinematography.
See you soon.
Saw both Palindromes and Storytelling by Solondz in the past week. Ai carumba. He is one of the few directors who can lure me into morbid and/or guilty curiosities without remorse.
Storytelling was more accessible, but if you see it before Palindromes you will wonder how much further can this guy go into the realm of the irreverent and politically incorrect, yet seemingly without doing so for the mere sake of it. It was a head shaker, a "how does he get away with this stuff" movie. But THEN! Palindromes! I don't even have an opinion other than to say I was amused, engaged, entertained throughout, and confused at first a bit, even. It is a freak show without feeling gratuitous (though it very well may have been). I have never walked away from a movie looking at my husband, him looking at me and both of us saying "What did you think?", and both of us responding, "I have no opinion, but I liked it".
HA!!!!!!!!!!!! Good one! Does he have a website?
Hi Lobo, how's it going? Wow, what a pig of a movie, eh? Husband rented that one, not I !!!!!!!!!!
I have a good six movies to review from past weeks. Can't even remember the titles of a few of them at this point. But Dummy was SUCH a pig I had to let off some steam.
Have been a tad preoccupied. Sorry to leave you to do this dirty job alone :)
You will be hearing from me - soon.
THAT IS AWESOME!
Dummy - HIDEOUS AND AWFUL PIECE OF GARBAGE OF A STUPID MOVIE.
But since it's 'not for everyone', this post is moot.
Me and You and Everyone We Know - 5 stars and I'm not even sure why.
NOT FOR EVERYONE!
You don't enjoy dismemberment? Woosy, lol!!!
Oh hey, I'm a huge Crowe fan. He's my idea of a hunk (well hung brains, too). I could not stop watching it. I like such period pieces, especially if there's botany or anthropology, etc. in it, like Mountains of the Moon.
Hey, that looks good!
Heat/P.S. The last scene where Pacino holds DeNiro's hand was stupid.
Heat - LOVED IT! Too tired to talk about it much but I give it 4 out of 5. Very cool.
Chopper - Didn't like it as much as Heat but loved the way it was made and the actor who played Chopper and I really did think it was superb, actually. Some of the idiosyncrasies reminded me of Requiem for a Dream (which was double mint) - speeding up stuff, etc. I give Chopper 3.75 out of 5 though it deserves more. I was simply in one of my moods while watching it.
I loved that movie. You have left nothing for me to add, though, without spoiling.
What's wrong with the ibox?
Very nice review, Lobo. I agree with everything you said. Think my husband missed the point of it, unfortunately.
Okay, have to reply to this. Have been dying to see Penguins. The only one on your list I've seen so far is Crash, so tx for recommendations. Will see asap.
See you soon :)))))))))))))
that mega chin thing is too funny
LOVED Boogie Nights!!!!
Damn, wish I could stick around. Popped in between chores.
Tell me about all the BANK YOU MADE!!! Good for you!!!
I'll check back in later, once I've caught up here a bit.
Great to see you again. And happy you had fun. TELL ME ABOUT THE BANK!!! Lucky dog.
A History of Violence: 3 out of 4. Saw something in the theater for once. Husband didn't even understand its reason to exist, to be made. He'd probably give it a 2. I see what he means. I didn't mind the fact that the director was aiming for obvious stereotypes and flat characters - I could see the stylized character portrayals was intentional.
I liked the cadence and extremes in tempo. It was either very calm or brutal. No middle ground. I somehow viewed it more how one would a painting than a movie. Curious cinematography. Old fashioned professional lighting like scenic, stage set, 1950s celeb shots from rural shows like Lassie. Dramatic tight shots with hot lights to accentuate the face.
Anyway, not for everyone :)
P.S. Anybody getting really weird "Preview" anomalies? Scary. First few words of my post turned into jibberish when I went to edit.
I do :)
You know what's interesting about this movie? I have had friends say, "I saw this awesome movie, Crash". Then we discuss it and they say, "You know, it actually wasn't a great movie but I enjoyed watching it anyway". I had the same experience, cannot deny it.
Oddest thing, eh? I think the guy who directed it also wrote the screenplay. He is an amazing director, is how I see it. The screenplay is horrible but the performances he elicits from everyone overrides the glaring flaws in the story.
I found the screenplay offensive, actually. But it would take me a paragraph to explain why one screenplay that requires the viewer to suspend disbelief beyond what is reasonable can do so successfully while another is offensive. Anyway, I was captivated by the brilliant directing and consequently, the acting as well.
So glad you loved it. Cheadle did an awesome job, didn't he?
Will see April for sure.
I agree it's a must see, despite all the things that annoyed me. Our ratings weren't too far off.
HOW WAS YOUR VACATION?!!!!!!
Hotel Rwanda: 4 out of 5 but I cried alot. Drags on a bit toward the end, however, it is a story that needs to be told and it is told really well. Hotel manager is a saint.
Never seen it but I can imagine.
Hey there.
Danza did a truly brilliant cameo - all of a minute or so. Don't go for that.
It's an artless message movie without a message. Do The Right Thing approached basically the same subject matter masterfully. This was pretty schlocky so I wouldn't bother if I were you. Honestly, it's pretty hokey.
There's this scene with a beautiful little girl in it (an invisible cape protects her from bullets) that made me gag. You will predict every outcome as did I and, miraculously, my husband who is usually clueless.
Crash: Started out getting annoyed at the manipulation and stereotypes about stereotyping. Quickly distracted by some seriously amazing acting (Bullock kicked butt in the scene with the locksmith and Danza was simply perfect), which is what I liked most about the movie. The next best thing was that they made the characters complex, however awkwardly and forced. They made it difficult to love or hate anyone, which is a bit of a copout. Wish they'd shown more balls by throwing in one person without redeeming qualities (actually, for me the store owner and Shaniqua were pretty irredeemable). All in all I watched with rapt attention, despite apparent flaws, the biggest of which was that some scenes were written so poorly I laughed when I should have been crying - like Dillon and the BJ couple.
I give it a 3.75 out of 5.
P.S. Amazing how everyone was beautiful, like we couldn't possibly care about average looking children - I so hate that.
You are too kind to me, Raz. Keep it up, please.
I am totally not meant for public consumption. Every time I come up for air I screw SOMETHING up and I HATE it. I answered my own post. Jeesh.
Hope ergo thinks so :(
I wonder in circles.
Just heard back. It said, "You think much but not too well. Oh, and would you kindly apologize to ergo for me. Tell him that I note how well he is tolerating the intolerable. He was assigned the wrong coordinates. I will make this up to him".
Oh, that's so nice to know. Try the second one up from the bottom, Freewill (which I don't believe in, btw). I like his stuff for some reason, though I don't admit that often.
That's a pretty funny idea. I'll send daily affirmations to Cogito@earthlink.net, right?
This board is so sad.
Nighty night world.
Two good recommendations today. Tx.
Got it! I was in disbelief when he kept insisting he didn't have a gambling problem but know that this level of denial and delusion is possible. I wish I were capable, actually.
Don't know about you but I am the 'beat yourself up with the facts' kind of person. I want to be sedated :)
Another nice post. TX again.
Very cool post and much to say, as soon as I feel human. I have a terrible flu and am in slow mo here this AM. I can't breathe without breaking out in a coughing fit. Am going to walk away from computer for a bit to catch my breath.
Love this post. Thanks so much and will see you when my head stops spinning.
Cool on the response to long post part. Thought I offended you and was hiding :)
Didn't you find Driver to be hideous in that part? And Hoffman's adjusting his glasses shtick started to irritate me beyond belief. I'm a pain in the butt, though. I could go on but if you have positive things to say I'm all eyes.
Maybe it will stick this time. Morning Ergo.
Hi!
Had moved the three LOTRings films to 1, 2 and 3. Saw one despite incredible resistance from my husband, who ruined the viewing experience totally (HE HATED IT). I had to break it up into three sittings. Since then he has come home with movies every night so I don't have the chance to see the others. Have them on the table ever since. Actually, just sent them back yesterday - hopeless. Will wait til he goes away or something to get them again.
So! Now that you bring it up, I am going to take care of that now, going through your list again and completely overhauling. It's quite a chore so I only moved a few around at the time.
How are you? I hear you're going away?
